In what sense do you want to combine them? I asked the question (after googling I might add ;-) ) because I figured if anything was on going it would have been heard about here. Mostly I asked in order to avoid re-inventing the wheel. While I don't claim to have solved the problem, what I do have is what I call an 80% solution. It will read in an ascii text file and produce an .ly file. It does so with no effort to solve any of the trickier problems involved, as yet not even the features I more or less plan on--- this is something I started a year or so ago and only now have gotten back to. I suppose that at least part of the problem is focus. I usually turn to the list for answers to problems that I've not been able to solve from the existing documentation. It usually doesn't occur to me that there might be some larger use for the question itself. It probably should--- as an obvious for example, look at FAQs for instance. Hello Mario, if you want to build one PDF from two .ly-files, you can also surround the scores with a \bookpart statement. Then you produce another .ly.file, wich includes the two sources. I often use this to combine several pieces to a 'book' and still be able to produce single PDFs piece by piece. Hi Hugh, I haven't heard of any perl scripts to convert ascii tabs to lilypond (apart from your script. Sounds interesting!) but I know of two programs that are supposed to be able to import ascii and export MusicXML (with musicxml2ly you can convert to LilyPond): 1) GuitarPro (commercial) 2) Harmony Assistant (commercial) With GuitarPro 5 (Mac-version) I can open .txt/.tab-files but tablature is faulty and the program crashes when I try to export MusicXML. Harmony Assistant seems to do a rather decent job but I only tried the demo version. http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/harmony.htm TablEdit could be an alternative. It can also read ascii and you can export it to abc and midi. Patrick, Thanks for the run down. From your comments and others, I would guess that the lack might have something to do with the lack of standards in ascii tabs and the perception of how hard it would be to find a solution and so on. Encourages me that my idea of starting with what can be done easily and working from there might be a useful one. Likewise Perl and the command line allows me freedom from platform restrictions similar to LilyPond. Page numbering
In the example below, I have found that if I have multiple pieces with a
table of contents, I have to use first-page-number = 0 in the paper
section to have the first piece start on page 1. Is there a better way

The main problem is that if I use print-first-page-number = ##t, in
order to get a page number on the first page of each piece, then I get a
page number of 0 appearing on the TOC page. How can I turn that off but
still get all other pages numbered?
Also, if you keep adding pieces to the book until the TOC uses more than
one page, then you have to use first-page-number = -1, first-page-number
= -2, etc, in order to have the first piece start on page 1, and need
some way of hiding the page numbers on all the TOC pages.

I asked a similar question some time ago which Mats answered most
successfully, with scheme code. "page number thornock" should bring
it right to the top.
