Re: hyphen in \markup

2005-03-02 Thread Mats Bengtsson
Why do you use version 2.5.0? If you want to do any serious typesetting,
you should stick to stable releases. Note, that version 2.4.4, for
example is more recent than 2.5.0. On the other hand, if you are curious
about the latest news in the development series, than you should use any
of the most recent 2.5.x versions. If this is the only version available
as a package for your OS, than you should complain loudly to the package
maintainer.
I can confirm that the hyphen does show up in version 2.4.4.
However, if you search the mailing list archives, you will learn
that there have been some problems related to how dashes are treated
in different font encodings.

of the markup text in quotes, I've tried enclosing just the hyphen in
quotes. The hyphen simply does not appear in output. The '-'

Help getting dvips working please

2005-03-02 Thread Ruth Ivimey-Cook

Hi,

I've just started using Lilypond. Thanks for all the work you've put in!

I have a slight problem. When I run lilypond, I get a valid dvi file that I can view in xdvi, but it fails to produce a postscript file. I think there's something wrong with dvips finding ec-mftrace.map, but I don't know what. Partial output from a lilypond --verbose run follows.

I've tried using kpswhich to find ec-mftrace.map, which fails, but it is in the ls-R file :-(

Another editor that I have enjoyed for quite some time now is TeXShop. There
is a native OS X version availlable and it can view PDF files as well. I run
TeXShop and terminal and am able to be quite efficient with it as TexShop
will watch the .pdf file and redisplay it as it is updated much like gv
under X11. Also usefull if you use LaTex.
I have not been able to get "point and click" to work but to be honest I
haven't tried too hard. I work mostly on small files and have gotten into
the habit of commenting the files for bar numbers so it isn't that hard to
find your way around the file.

I use TeXShop on OS X for my mathematics typesetting -- I agree that

What are the steps I need to perform (if any) to prepare it for
Lilypond editing? Sounds like that would be much easier than the way
I'm doing it now (SubEthaEdit + CLI commands)!

Hi all!

I want to merge two voices into one Staff. No problem so far.
But: all rests are vertically shiftet by default.

I would like so bring all rests to their standard-position, so that I
have only one rest-sign for both voices. Is it possible to define that
global for the whole piece?

Any idea?

Hi Kieren,
I don't have anything special set except that in the preferences there
is a setting under the "Preview" tab to set "Automatic Preview Update".
I still use the CLI (terminal) to invoke Lilypond, but as I use tcsh,
all I need to do is hit the 'up arrow' key to invoke the last command. So
the way this works for me is as follows:

Launch TeXShop and open your .ly file. Save file to a directory.

Launch the Terminal app and navigate to the directory where your .ly file
resides (I do this by typing "cd "[space after the cd] and switching to the
Finder, open a window and get to the directory{I have a shortcut set up for
this so I can get to where I store my music files in one click of the
mouse.} Drag the folder containing your .ly file to the terminal window and
the path will be entered for you) This sounds more involved than it really
is.

Type the command to invoke Lilypond: eg. Lilypond theFile.ly

Switch to TexShop and open the .pdf file.

>From now on you can edit the file, click on the Terminal window (use
"command-tab"), hit the up arrow key, click on the window containing the
.pdf and wait for the window to be updated.

Repeat until you are satisfied with the results.

Pretty basic really. If you figure out a way to get the point and click
thing working with TexShop I would appreciate hearing about it.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think it is possible because point and

that works natively on mac os x, except macdvi or macdvix , but they

I don't know if Jdvi (the dvi viewer inside jedit) can work as a

Personally, I like xdvi (never had problem with font, fast etc.) on X11

lilypond Pukes Thanks to Fink/TeTeX

2005-03-02 Thread Will Oram
Last night I called the routine fink selfupdate; fink update-all .
tetex-base had troubles updating, so fink removed it completely (?).
This was clearly a common problem according to various fink lists.
Today tetex-base installed fine following a fresh
selfupdate/update-all.

lilypond 2.4.2 has stopped working, though. In various files I've
tested, lilypond chokes at the same point:

I'm working under Cygwin and fear, that jEdit is not available there!?

We're definitely developing it for the Cygwin platform :-) (but in Java,
so works on others as well) See http://lily4jedit.sf.net

Re: lilypond Pukes Thanks to Fink/TeTeX

2005-03-02 Thread Graham Percival
I've CC'd this to the fink package maintainer. I think you have two
choices right now:
1) downgrade to tetex 2.whatever. I'm sure the fink docs (FAQ,
manual, etc) tell you
how to do this kind of thing.
2) wait until there's a new lilypond package and/or lilypond-devel
package.

IIRC, "can't find latin1.enc" is a known issue and there's patches
around that fixes the
problem.

This was clearly a common problem according to various fink lists.
Today tetex-base installed fine following a fresh
selfupdate/update-all.

lilypond 2.4.2 has stopped working, though. In various files I've
tested, lilypond chokes at the same point:

It seems both of the problems (TeTeX 3 upgrade fails to complete,

:)
To get the TeTeX upgrade to complete:
- run "fink update tetex". If it fails...
- Open a new shell window and run it again.
- This is due to the init script the lilypond package installs.
To get lilypond to run (I verified that this works for 2.5.13, not
sure about 2.4.x):

sudo mkdir -p /sw/etc/texmf.local/fonts/enc/public
sudo ln -s /sw/share/lilypond//fonts/enc
/sw/etc/texmf.local/fonts/enc/public/lilypond
sudo mktexlsr

I will release fixed lilypond packages within the next few days.
Matthias
I tried this, and though everything updated and processed, lily still
choked. Looking into this, I discovered the problem was in sudo ln
-s... Nothing called enc exists within the first filepath. Thus, it's
creating an alias to nothing. You'd think ln would complain about
something like this?

In 2.4.2, /fonts contains subdirectories afm, source, tfm, and type1.
BTW, Matthias, someone suggested I look at your experimental directory
for 2.5.x .info and .patch files. No idea where this directory is.
Would you mind pointing me in the right direction?

You can find it by searching the lilypond-devel mailist archives, but I
would
recommend that you wait a few days for the updated packages. The
current
ones in his experimental directory only work for .11

I did, thanks. But unfortunately I could not yet get it working; it also
seems that I have a slightly different version of /tex/GNUMakefile:
1) the original looks like this

[--]
$(outdir)/music-drawing-routines.ps: $(depth)/ps/music-drawing-routines.ps
   rm -f $@
   -ln $< $@
$(outdir)/latin1.enc: GNUmakefile
   echo '/ISOLatin1Encoding' > [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   echo 'ISOLatin1Encoding pstack' \
 | gs -sDEVICE=nullpage -quiet - 2>> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   echo 'def' >> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   sed 's|/minus|/hyphen|' < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > $@
[--]
2) after modifications inspired by the above-mentioned patch looks like this
[--]
$(outdir)/music-drawing-routines.ps: $(depth)/ps/music-drawing-routines.ps
   rm -f $@
   -ln $< $@
$(outdir)/latin1.enc: GNUmakefile
   echo '/ISOLatin1Encoding' > [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   echo 'ISOLatin1Encoding pstack' \
 | gs -sDEVICE=nullpage -quiet - >> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2>&1
   echo 'def' >> [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   sed 's|/minus|/hyphen|' < [EMAIL PROTECTED] > $@
[--]
-- I also tried to paste the version on the above message as is, but
this didn't compile.

So with the modified GNUMakefile lilypond-2.5.13 behaves like before:
it still 'can't find latin1.enc' and it also makes some complaints about
Stencil::moved_to_edge: adding empty stencil.

Perhaps I made a mess somehow. Was I modifying the correct GNUMakefile
anyway? -- Would be nice to get this working, though. What should be
done now?

My best wishes, Tapio

As a side question to this - should it be (theoretically) possible to
build Lilypond using the non-Fink distribution of TeX made by Gerben
Wierda? I tried it once, but ran into problems with Lilypond
complaining that it couldn't find some things in the /sw directory -
but of course the TeX items weren't there, because they were in /usr
instead.

If I tinker with it, should I be able to get it to work? Or are there
some items found only in the Fink distribution of TeX that Lilypond
needs?

Many thanks

Minimum measure size

2005-03-02 Thread Martin Djernæs
Hi,

(I'm using Lilypond 2.4.2)

Can anyone help me with a command to set the minimum size of measure in
the layout? When I place lyrics under the notes I get pretty much what I
want, but if I just have notes the final score is too much compressed
for my taste (kids are going to read it).
