Problem with LT 1.5.12: -pthread

2005-02-07 Thread Jeff Squyres
It looks like LT 1.5.12 changed some behavior with respect to the
-pthread flag and the GNU compilers. Here's a snipit of output from
building my project (using AM + LT):

/bin/sh ../../../libtool --mode=link g++  -g -Wall -Wundef
-Wno-long-long -finline-functions -pthread -export-dynamic -o
ompi_info components.o ompi_info.o output.o param.o version.o
../../../src/libmpi.la

# So far, so good -- this is pretty normal.
mkdir .libs
# Also so far, so good.
g++ -g -Wall -Wundef -Wno-long-long -finline-functions -o ompi_info
components.o ompi_info.o output.o param.o version.o
-Wl,--export-dynamic ../../../src/.libs/libmpi.a -ldl

# Whoa! What happened to -pthread?
From here, I get lots of [expected] messages about missing pthread
symbols. This is somewhat of a Big Problem; it did not happen with
1.5.10 -- meaning that -pthead was passed down to the final link in
(ditto for LT <1.5.10 that I can remember).

What happened?

I applied the attached patch to the branch last night. The ltmain.in bit
should apply to your ltmain.sh too.
Opinions on how badly broken this is are welcome, perhaps I need to release
a 1.5.14? :((

Re: Problem with LT 1.5.12: -pthread

2005-02-07 Thread Jeff Squyres
I would clearly vote for it. :D
I think that any project that uses AM+LT for compiling multi-threaded
applications that uses any of those flags will fail to link properly,
right? And these flags (-pthread, -mt, etc.) are typically the
recommended method of compiling / linking multi-threaded applications.

So I'd say that it's probably a pretty big problem. :-\

It might even be worse than that... there are a number of applications
that link to libraries that use threads (SleepyCat DB being a major
one), and breaking that linking would be even worse :-(

I must agree. Some operating systems like Solaris will still
successfuly link the program/library but any pthread locks will be
stubbed out as NOPs. This is due to using weak linkage. :-(

Okay, first note that the problem is that libtool-1.5.12 does not pass on
- -pthread to the compiler/linker when building executables, it does pass it
on when building libraries.
Second, note that I will release another libtool either on Friday or
Saturday this week. Please ensure that the stable branch works as expected
on your systems.
Embarrassedly,
