[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1886022] Re: multiple processes intermittently stall at same point in strace

2020-07-18 Thread Lachele Foley
Yes. And still intermittent.

More data that might or might not be useful: I got frustrated trying to
get the grub menu to appear and uninstalled plymouth. So, I can tell
you that this happens at tty[1-4] as well as after 'startx'. (LXDE is
installed) I think it is less likely to happen without plymouth
installed. It's hard to get good data, though, bc intermittent. Remote
logins (ssh) still happen mostly slowly but occasionally quickly.

Another issue that might be related. I had to stop/disable networking.service
partway through attempting to apt update (after the -39 test and now back at
-40) because the machine stopped knowing where to find a DNS server, ignoring
my entries (and lack of entries) in netplan and attempts at 'netplan apply'. I
had disabled network-manager long ago. After stopping networking.service,
'netplan apply' was obeyed and I had DNS again. Even after disabling
networking and network-manager, two unconfigured interfaces still come up at
boot (via DHCP).

Title:
multiple processes intermittently stall at same point in strace

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
If this isn't a kernel bug, my apologies. I didn't know where else to
put it. It affects seemingly unrelated processes, so there wasn't an
obvious 'package'. Possibly nscd, which is in glibc, which is close
  to the kernel...

I noticed frequent, but intermittent hangs/stalls in multiple
processes. The processes usually go on to completion after a few
seconds or so. Occasionally, I get timeouts that I think might be
this same symptom but aren't always strace-able.

At first, I thought it was an authentication issue because I got hangs
with "sudo -i" as well as intermittently very slow logins via ssh with
ldap. But, then it happened with "vim dum", which could still be
authentication somehow, but I don't know enough to determine that.
Htop will also hang intermittently, but I don't have a trace of it.

I started running strace on the processes that are hanging. The hang
happened after the same few lines each time that I was able to strace
at the same time of a hang (it is intermittent).

Here is an example of the last lines before hang where a normal user
  issues "strace id username":

  socket(AF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM|SOCK_CLOEXEC|SOCK_NONBLOCK, 0) = 3
  connect(3, {sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = 0
  sendto(3, "\2\0\0\0\v\0\0\0\7\0\0\0passwd\0", 19, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 19
  poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 1, 5000^Cstrace: Process 2816
detached

I hit ctrl-C to stop execution so I could easily copy that info, hence
detached.

Here is an example from root using "strace vim dum":

  socket(AF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM|SOCK_CLOEXEC|SOCK_NONBLOCK, 0) = 3
 connect(3,
{sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = 0
   sendto(3, "\2\0\0\0\v\0\0\0\7\0\0\0passwd\0",
19, MSG_NOSIGNAL, NULL, 0) = 19
 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 1, 5000

  ...that took practice to capture.

I suspect that LDAP is involved somehow, but it might be victim rather
than culprit. Obviously, nscd has some involvement per the lines
above. Or possibly, these lines are about strace itself?

I can capture full straces with timings, etc. Just say what you need.
Or direct me to the proper venue for this report.

I looked in kern.log for evidence of a hardware issue, but didn't see
anything that looked significantly unusual. If it seems like
hardware, I will appreciate hints as to the component.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1888043] Re: zfs-dkms 0.8.3-1ubuntu12.2: zfs kernel module failed to build

2020-07-18 Thread Colin Ian King
One does not require zfs-dkms if you are using the 5.4 ubuntu kernel
since the zfs modules are built into the kernel package. Removing zfs-
dkms will solve the issue.

Title:
Extreme touchpad lag on HP Envy X360 13-ag0xxx on startup/awakening
  from suspended state

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 20.04 with kernel 5.4.4 on my HP Envy X360 13-ag0xxx. The
touchpad works fine under most conditions, however whenever the system wakes up
from a suspended state (on startup) in the first 15-20 seconds the touchpad is
quite laggy (everything else is smooth) and very hard to use. I am using
Libinput 1.14.1.

  from suspended state

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 20.04 with kernel 5.4.4 on my HP Envy X360 13-ag0xxx. The
touchpad works fine under most conditions, however whenever the system wakes up
from a suspended state (on startup) in the first 15-20 seconds the touchpad is

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1880076] Re: ubuntu 20.4 - retransmitts with r8169

2020-07-18 Thread frank
tried with newer kernel on r2 (was 5.4.21 before) and now the 5.4.51
like my custom build and now i get my ~940Mbit without retransmitts...so
custom kernel on client fixes my problem...maybe because it is newer
than ubuntus 5.4 (which seems to be based on 5.4.0) or maybe because i
have no additional Patches (maybe ubuntu-kernel has).

@jeremy can you test with custom build kernel (stable-tree like above)
too?

  ubuntu 20.4 - retransmitts with r8169

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

i run some network-tests (iperf3) and noticed massive retransmitts in
ubuntu 20.4 with kernel 5.4.0-29. I'm using module r8169 for network-
  adapter

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)

if i boot my ubuntu 18.4 and did same iperf-test (same hardware, same
network configuration, other client is not rebooted) i have not these
  retransmitts.

Bug description:
  SRU justification:
  [Impact]
New realtek wifi card ID found on ThinkCentre.
No driver is loaded to support it.

  [Fix]
This wifi card is very similar as 0xc822 in rtw88.

  [Test]
Verified on hardware, link status is OK, iperf test result is good.

  [Regression Potential]
  Low.
Add new ID to supported driver.
Test on hw, double confirmed by LP bugs.
This patch is backported from original link due to the 5.8-rc1 driver
file path changed, no function changed.

  Maintainer had merged:

https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/commit/b76b895a90f1168c5223849562fd6e1196b2c351
This git repo is moving by maintainer, not availible by now.

Looking for a working solution on a fresh install (USB BOOT) of
Ubuntu. A work-around helped, for a while, but I would really like to
disconnect my Wifi Dongel and use my brand new laptop!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1886920] Re: Battery drain during sleep. System suspended before kernel suspends all tasks. Lenovo ThinkPad T460

2020-07-18 Thread Richard Ebeling
$ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
s2idle [deep]

---

For testing /sys/power/pm_async set to 0, I did:

$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/energy_now
838
$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_now
2046
$ date
Sa 18. Jul 13:21:18 CEST 2020
$ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/power/pm_async
0
$ # suspended here
$ date
Sa 18. Jul 16:07:03 CEST 2020
$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_now
2046
$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/energy_now
673

so it still drains 1,25% of the total battery capacity per hour, just as
with pm_async set to 1. Also, /var/log/syslog looks just as described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1825636:

Title:
Battery drain during sleep. System suspended before kernel suspends
  all tasks. Lenovo ThinkPad T460

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The same as
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1825636.

kaihengfeng closed that one "Because there's no response from the
original bug reporter." and asked to file a report for all devices
affected, so here I am, duplicating the report.

On Ubuntu MATE 18.04, as well as after the update to 20.04, the
battery drains about 2% per hour of sleep (if I just close the lid).

  $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
  s2idle [deep]

tlp was initially installed on my machine. However, this behaviour also
occurs if I
$ sudo apt purge tlp acpi-call-dkms && sudo reboot now

also, it occurs when booting from a freshly made MATE 20.04 live usb
stick, so TLP shouldn't be the culprit.

All the log files look in all relevant aspects similar to what was reported
in the old report. I'm happy to provide log files from my machine, if any are
necessary.

coming up and the boot process never finishing.

https://i.stack.imgur.com/jiVhU.jpg

I also found out that when booting with kernel

7.5.0 (Ubuntu 7.5.0-3ubuntu1~18.04)) #110-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 23 02:39:32
UTC 2020

the problem is gone. But when I use the 111 kernel the pcie errors come
up again and the system boot hangs on it.

This is my graphics card, it was suggested that the pcie errors might
have to do with that, not sure about this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1888090] [NEW] Frequent Kernel panic in 5.4.0-40 but not 5.4.0-29 on Gemini Lake cpu and r8169r

2020-07-18 Thread Akom
Public bug reported:

Crashes occur more frequently with heavy network traffic and can happen
every 5 minutes to 24+ hours. Stacktrace usually involves TCP.

Same behavior on two new motherboards (Asrock J4105M and Asrock
J5005-ITX) with different RAM type and brand. All other peripherals
removed and changed PSU (still crashed).

Enabled kdump and got a dozen dumps, will attach some.

Went from 5.4.0-40 to 5.4.0-29 and no crashes at all.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1822937] Re: NVIDIA settings won't write to /etc/xorg

I found the solution installing screen-resolution-extra 0.18 from
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/screen-resolution-extra using dbkg -i
place where u downloaded deb file.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1872108] Re: Bass not on working Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th gen running focal

2020-07-18 Thread Randall Leeds
This makes a world of difference. It seems to make the Headphone volume
control the bottom speakers while the Speaker volume still controls the
top speaker.

Does anyone know enough about ALSA to know if there's a way the command
could be tweaked so that the Speaker volume controls both?

Bug description:
When I was trying to connect to the network after rebooting the
computer, and I disabled verification before the reboot, the laptop
connected, but then, even though no other computers had this problem,
the speed of the wi-fi shut down, and then the connection with the
router dropped. All this until I turned Airplane Mode on and Wi-Fi on
my PC for a brief second before disabling airplane mode and reenabling
  Wi-Fi.
