Look like your CPAN config might not be sane ... Google search found
https://serverfault.com/questions/279704/cpan-configuration-wrong-how-to-change
which might be good to review.

You can also try below at a cmd prompt (note the 'm' before '.bat'):

C:\Strawberry\perl\bin\cpanm.bat
https://www.cpan.org/authors/id/B/BP/BPSCHUCK/Finance-Quote-1.64_03.tar.gz

And if above fails, try:

- uninstall Strawberry Perl using 'Programs and Features' from the Control Panel
- delete C:\Strawberry directory
- install F::Q using GNC's script
- apply the patch

Re: [GNC] Searching mailing lists

2025-03-03 Thread Brad Morrison
Hi Derek/GNUCash users & other possibly interested stakeholders,

I am on the "board" of the North Bay Linux Users Group/NBLUG -
https://nblug.org/

While I was not involved in the migration of the NBLUG mailing lists
from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3, I did read that is was quite an involved
process.

It would be nice if some of the nonprofit fiscal sponsors in the open
source software world, like Software Freedom Conservancy
(https://sfconservancy.org/), Software in the Public Interest
(https://www.spi-inc.org/), and the Free Software Foundation
(https://www.fsf.org/working-together/fiscal-sponsorship), would offer
member projects a somewhat centralized mailing service using Mailman 3,
like the Python Software Foundation does -
https://www.python.org/community/lists/

That way, not all of the individual open source software projects would
have to do the entire Mailman 2 > 3 installation, migration,
maintenance, & use process on their own.

Looking up NXR.L and NWG.L at https://finance.yahoo.com/, the prices at
09:00 PST are indicated to be in GBp (NXR.L:222.00 NWG.L:480.30). F::Q
yahoojson is returning 2.22 and 4.803 respectively. So the module is
doing the correct conversion from GBp to GBP. Although, the module does
need a tweak to also convert open, high, low, and close. I'll fix this

ISTR Nabble went bang a few years ago, and stopped mirroring all the lists
they had in their archive. Looks like the archives may have bitten the dust

if that is the case then removal is probably best?

Re: [GNC] Finance::Quote sometimes returns stock prices in pence

Use the regex method:

if ($info{$stocks,"currency"} =~ /GB/) {

# do something if 'GB' is found somewhere in it

}

Disclaimer: Be careful about pitfall with just using first two characters
for the division. You should verify that as I have not.

Thanks for that. I think that the coding should work but there is probably
an error on the Yahoo data where they probably identify the currency as GBP
not as GBp. I am wondering if all the UK LSE stocks are quoted in pence but
the currency identifier is sometimes incorrect - in which case it would be
better to just use the first two letters "GB" to identify which stocks
should be divided by 100?

Could I test this by just changing the line:

 if ( ($info{$stocks,"currency"} eq "GBp")

To use a wild card instead of the "p"? Or is there a way to just test the
first two characters?

Subject: [GNC] Finance::Quote sometimes returns stock prices in pence

There is a feature in YahooJSON.pm to convert quotes on the LSE in pence to
pounds by dividing by 100. This works on the majority of quotes but there
are some that it does not work on such as NWG.L (Natwest) and NXR.L
(Norcross). Looking at the file it appears that the division by 100 is
applied if the stock currency is identified as GBp or GBX and then the
currency is changed to GBP as well. So I assume that the currency on Yahoo
is incorrectly identified as GBP for the two stocks above. I am not sure how
to check this but if anyone can suggest a mod to correct it I would be
grateful.

Sorry for late response, I've been battling some health issues the last

Kalpesh,

While this will work for this case (no extra dependencies added), please
refrain from suggesting this method of installing Finance::Quote.
Especially to those with limited experience with Perl.

There is no reason that the cpan or cpanm utilities can not be used on
Windows with Strawberry Perl, Mac OSX, and especially Linux/Unix/BSD.
For those who for some reason are having difficulties with cpan/cpanm,
it would be much more beneficial in the long run to troubleshoot why the
standard Perl module install tool is not working.

WRT the GBP/GBp issue, I would appreciate that the issue is duplicated
and confirmed BEFORE suggesting a user make manual edits! In the case of
NWG.L, Finance::Quote this morning returned Last:4.803 GBP (pounds). A
lookup at
https://www.londonstockexchange.com/stock/NWG/natwest-group-plc/company-page
returned 480.30 GBX (pence). And finance.yahoo.com returned 480.30 GBp
(pence). Perhaps asking Adrian what values he was seeing, and why he
determined they were incorrect?

Thank you.

[GNC] Budgets: Income and Expense Signs

2025-03-03 Thread Abhijit Kshirsagar
Hello all,

I see that in the budget report, any item that is less than the budgeted
value is shown as negative (red in some stylesheets). On income /
investment accounts this works as expected,
If budgeted income was $100 and actual was $80 the difference is -$20 i.e.
perceived as lower net assets.

However when an expense item is budgeted for $100, and actual amount is
$80, this difference should be counted the other way around - i.e. $20.

However, gnucash shows these "lower" expenses in negative/red just like
"lower" income/asset values. Since gnucash knows the account type, my
understanding is that is should calculate expense and income differences in
the budget in opposite ways.

Am I missing something here?
I'm sure this is not just a stylesheet issue...

I seem to have found a reliable way to crash GnuCash on the Mac

A report is automatically sent to Apple, but perhaps you should be
notified as well.

Best wishes,
Ben

It doesn't happened with my instance running on Sequoia 15.3.1, Gnucash
5.9 with Postgresql.  Maybe restart or upgrade your OS and see if the
problem persists?
