Hi, Gary,

I am not an accountant, but I would suggest setting up Income accounts as:

Income:Haircuts:Dallas
Income:Haircuts:Los Angeles
...
Income:Hair Coloring:Dallas
Income:Haircuts:Los Angeles

and so on for the rest of the Income and Expense Accounts.

It is also possible to use one income account - say Income:Haircuts, put the
location name in the Memo field, and then generate reports for Haircuts by
location, but you have to be fussy about putting the location in every time,
and be consistent with spelling (e.g. did you mean “Los Angeles” or “L.A.” or
“LA”?)

Hope that helps,

Michael

[GNC] SOLVED: Re: CSV importer Debet/Credit issue

2024-12-08 Thread Koos Pol

Op 07-12-2024 om 21:01 schreef Koos Pol:

The CSV importer *almost* works. The statements from my bank has:
- one column for the amount. The amount is always positive.
- one column have the entries "Debet" or "Credit" to indicate the
direction of the tx.

Here are a few sample rows:
"01-01-2024","38,10","Debet",...
"11-01-2024","241,58","Credit",...
"23-01-2024","43,35","Debet",...
"11-02-2024","241,58","Credit",...
"06-03-2024","384,95","Debet",...

Is there any way to have the importer grok this? The "Action" column
didn't work.

Thanks for all the suggestions. But honestly I don't like the manual
preprocessing.
To overcome this I've cobbled together an AQBanking profile for my
particular CSV statements, starting from the standard available
profiles. AQBanking supports a separate column for Credit/Debet. GnuCash
picks it up automatically. And it works like a charm :-)

This means I can now run File > Import AQBanking > CSV > triodos
My profile is located at
/home/koos/.aqbanking/imexporters/csv/profiles/triodos.conf

I've attached the profile for those interested.

[GNC] gnucash & Dragon Naturally Speaking

2024-12-08 Thread Tim via gnucash-user
I've been a happy GNU cash user for some time. I've been using Dragon
NaturallySpeaking version 15 on Windows 11 to dictate into GNU cash with
success until today. I just installed the latest Windows 11 feature update
24 H2 and it seems to have broken the communication between GNU cash and
Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Dragon now thinks that all of the fields in GNU
cash are unusable by it and it shows a "no speech" message when they are
selected. I am no longer able to dictate into GNU cash from Dragon. This is
a big deal for me because I have repetitive motion injuries for many years
as a software developer and typing rapidly becomes very painful.

Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas for a solution?

Running this version of GnuCash generates the error that this version

Re: [GNC] CSV importer Debet/Credit issue

2024-12-08 Thread Geldnerd via gnucash-user
Hi Koos,

From your name and domain extension I derive that you are from The Netherlands
like me. I haven’t found a way to make the importer combine the C/D and the
number to a booking that GnuCash can handle. Therefore I use a spreadsheet to
automatically ‘prewash’ the export files from the bank into something that
GnuCash can read.

It can be found here: https://www.geldnerd.nl/hoe-importeer-ik-in-gnucash/.
Works for ABN AMRO and Rabobank. But can be adapted for any bank.

Best regards,
Geldnerd

Yes, you need to install each major version in turn. Install 2.6.21, open your
books and make sure everything is as it should be. Make a backup copy, then
install the last of the 3. series. Open your data files, make sure everthing
is ok, then save the file (this will update the data to 3.whatever). Make
another backup copy. Then install the last of the 4. series and open the file
you saved from version 3. Make sure everything is ok, then save it again and
make another backup. Now install the current 5. version. Open the just saved
version and check for problems. Then save it, You should now be up to date.

Good suggestion.

Rolling back from windows 11 24H2 to the previous build makes the bug go away.

But that’s not a great long term solution. : - ). Microsoft will force that
update eventually. I reported the bug to them. Maybe they’ll look into it too.

I hope I’m not the only gnucash customer using Dragon.

[GNC] Bug in latest version?

2024-12-08 Thread Edwin Booth
Here’s what I experienced:

I downloaded my credit card statement (QIF) from the bank. I imported it
into GnuCash. As usual, there were some items that were not yet assigned to
expense accounts. I assigned one to “Expenses: dining.” The next one also
was a dining expense so I clicked on that again. It went back to the
Expenses drop down menu, but this time when I clicked on “Expenses: dining”
(which was still highlighted from the previous time) it didn’t do anything
except go back to the downloaded list. I tried again; same thing. I found
that I had to collapse the drop-down menu and re-click on Expenses: dining
to get it to do what I needed. I’ve never had that problem before. Is this
a bug? If so, has it already been reported?

Thanks!

Re: [GNC] Accounting for Income and Expenses from Multiple Business Locations

Are there intra-city transactions?  If not, the simple solution is to

Well, there are pros and cons. You'd want to take into account how often
you would be wanting to do what. Bear in mind that standard accounting
does not have "tags", but if you have your CoA set up properly you can
selectively include/exclude accounts from reports. Your considerations
should be.

a) Might you EVER sell off one of these "sites" separately from the
whole. That is a STRONG plus for separate sets of books as can show the
financials of THIS business and just this business.

b) How often would you be comparing what stores made per activity? Or
just profitability as a whole? Keep in mind that you can export into a
spreadsheet. If this activity VERY frequent, that's a strong plus for
all in one set of books.

c) But not your personal books, because now even selling the business as
a whole comes into play. On the other hand, if transactions between the
business and your personal affairs are VERY frequent, might reconsider.

d) WHO is going to be entering transactions into the books? For example,
if site manager at each site that almost demands separate books (you
don't want a site manager even to be able to look at the other sites,
let alone write!

PS: None of this is about gnucash. We would be making these decisions
even back in the old days of pen and ink on paper.

Re: [GNC] Accounting for Income and Expenses from Multiple Business Locations PS

2024-12-08 Thread Michael or Penny Novack via gnucash-user
I think I should add - I am pretty sure that "cost of goods sold" is
related only to goods being sold. Yes of course, when providing a
service there may well be costs from consumables used in that service.
But how  you account for those costs (when "expensed") is different.

Thus -- the salon ALSO "sells" its customers hair coloring, shampoo,
etc. to take home with them. THESE products, when bought, are not
immediately an expense but are inventory. You get to expense them only
WHEN sold (increase cost of goods sold and decrease inventory). On the
other hand, when you buy shampoo to be used to wash customers hair in
the salon (part of the expense of providing the service) these can be
taken as an expense immediately when purchased. Don't have to wait until
used.

PLEASE NOTE: Organizations often faced with not knowing (when purchased
for inventory) whether will be sold or given. Take "tee shirts". These
might BOTH be being sold to raise money (cost of goods sold) AND
sometimes given to volunteers (recognition). My practice was to treat
new batches of tee shirts as inventory, waiting until known what sort of
expense till sold or given. Only if the ones given to volunteers were
different would I treat that batch as an immediate expense.

I put this bit (about organizations and tee shirts) as it is possible
the hair salon rarely sells product but might, say to a favored
customer. Here we have the reverse situation. The product had NOT been
placed into inventory when the product batch bought but expensed . So
now when sold, we debit "cost of goods sold" and credit that expense
(instead of inventory batch)
