Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread Robin Lake via gnucash-user
R Losey --

Thank you for your reply. I think the 136K file size is with data. This is what
it was on the old computer. I have three accounts in gnuCash, Two very minimal
activity, one just normal household activity. They are only about three years
old.

Yes, the column headings are wrong. Haven't found where I could open any other
register type. Therein is my problem, I believe. To use your example below, the
main file is RobinBook, other entries are RobinBook. gnucash."date
stamp".gnucash. Each one is about the same size at 136K.

I still have the old computer with the original files. I also have a thumb
drive with a backup of the old computer.

Thank you for your reply.

The transfer of data was done at the store where I purchased the computer.
The last time I used gnuCash on the old computer the file was 135kb on
11/05, it appears that the first time I opened it on the new computer it
was 136kb on 11/10. It has been opened and closed a few time since, and
there is no data file (gnuCash Financial Data) with subsequent closures,
just the "text file". Not sure what or how transfer was made. Reports and
any other details (report setups) do not appear to be there.

Where can I find the user files in question?

Thank you again for your help.

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread Stan Brown (using GC 4.14)
Robin,

An easy way to determine whether you actually have data in the file is
to start with the Accounts tab.

1. Are most of the displayed balances nonzero? If so, data must be in
the file to get nonzero summary figures. On the other hand, if most of
the balances are zero, it might mean you have no data, or it might mean
you "closed the books" and haven't entered any transactions after that,
or it might mean you have a filter in effect (see below)..

2. Still from the Accounts tab, press Ctrl+F to bring up the Find
Transaction dialog. Enter search criteria that would take in most
records -- Description contains e, for example, or Value has credits or
debits greater than or equal to 0.01.

Also, make sure you haven't set a filter that excludes all data. In the
register for one of your no-data accounts, click View » Filter By and
make sure that Show All is selected. If changing to Show All reveals
data, make the same change in your other accounts. (N.B. When you change
ther flter to Show All, you probably want to tick the "Save Filter" box
at the bottom of the dialog.)

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread R Losey
Given that the file size is okay, it is odd that you are only seeing your
expense accounts. What does the "Accounts" page show? My bank accounts are
under Assets-Current Assets; if I right-click and select "Edit Account", I
see that the "Type" is "Bank". Are your bank accounts missing?

Dumb question: Are you sure you opened the account file? On my Mac, the
window title has the name of the open file, and I always use File->Open to
open an account file (but GnuCash defaults to the last one open, it seems,
so I rarely have to do this).

One more thing. If you only transfer the XML data file without also
transferring the User files mentioned in that Backup reference, the data
file will open without the various tabs in the Tab Bar that were kept
nicely organized in those User files, so it will look like you lost the
rergisters when you actually only lost the saved view of tabs on the tab
bar.

Re: [GNC] How do I do a back up of Gnucash? Dan,Your main data file (set of
books is stored at a location you will havedecided on when you first ran
GnuCash and did a File->Save to somespecific location on a hard drive. GunCash
by default creates backupfiles of that file and log files which are useful in
the event a crashcauses corruption of the main data file. The main data file
will be named .gnucash where isthe name you have given the
file. The backup files will be named .gnucash..gnucashand
the log files will be named.gnucash..log. is 1
14 characcter numerical string giving the date(yearmonth and day and time
(hours, min, sec) of creation of the file in theformat MMDDHHMMSS. If you
move the file(s) to another locationGnuCash will not find them when you start
it again and you can useFile_Open to navigate to the new location and open
the.gnucash file.  You would only access the backup and logfiles
after having a system crash where the .gnucash becomescorrupted. It is
generally recommended that you create a folder/directory (it canbe named
) and place all of the above files with .*in that
directory.  This simplifies backup of the files to anotherdevice as you simply
backup the whole directory. In addition there is user preference data
(including saved reports etc)and configuartion data as described on the wiki
page. About half waydown that page under the heading Diagrams of Configuration
LocationsYou will find links to diagrams showing the locations of that data
inthe file heirarchy. You may wish to backup  the data in  c:\Documentsand
Settings\\\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash to preserve the userpreference
dataThere is no problem locating the main data file in any locationaccessible
from your file system including cloud locations, Dropboxes,Network file storage

Robin

Looks as though you are almost sorted. I have recently upgraded to
Windows 11.

Gnucash Version 5.9 Build ID 5.9+(2024-09-28)
Windows 11Version 24H2 (OS Build 26.100.216 1)

All my reports are blank. When I go to print an invoice the tab that
comes up contains nothing. Have you got this issue?

2024-11-14 Thread Maria Inmaculada de la Torre
Hello Robin,

A couple of times when I changed computers, I completely lost the files and
could not open them (I tried opening them but there were no transactions).
The solution that worked at the time was replaying the GnuCash .log file as
per screenshot below. Have you tried that? There should be a log file in
the folder where you had your original files.

I hope this helps.

FWIW, I just created a new test file, all the default options and it saved at
32k uncompressed XML.

so I think OP maybe has some transaction data in the transferred file.

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread David Carlson
Robin,

You say that you only have three accounts in GnuCash. There should be many
more than that. Take a look under Help to see some examples. You have one
page label on the Tab Bar called Accounts. Your three bank accounts fall
under Assets, but there should be other accounts under Liabilities, Income,
Expense and Equity as well. Your column headers have different names in
each account type. Open the Accounts tab to find the other accounts.

In reply to Murugan's question, the version of gnuCash on the old
 computer is Ver 4.9+ (2021-12-18), Windows 10.

The Registry Editor contains this hierarchy of folders:
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/GSettings/Org/GnuCash/gnucash/dialogs, general,
history, warning, window. One or more of those last five folders contains
reference to the name of my file. This tells me that this data was
 transferred.

How did you do the transfer? Does it have the same name and size as on the
old computer? Did you also transfer the other (user) file

I think it’s mostly an Apple problem too but the reporter on bug 799463
included an error message that I'd missed and that led to a potential
workaround. I've packaged Gnucash-Arm-5.9-2.dmg. You can download it from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/5.9/Gnucash-Arm-5.9-2.dmg/download
 and the SHA is
df9d99afee94039f377e2b4a5b385ba0065fc25d86f3314054fade661f057d61. Please test
and report if it works for you.

Appears to work for me. No extensive testing, but it: Opens, processes pending
scheduled transactions, Saves, Quits, and reopens without crashing.

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread R Losey
I'm glad your accounts are there with your data.

As other people noted, the Saved Reports are not stored with the saved
data; they are part of the user configuration. You will either need to
re-create them (this is what I had to do when my computer died and I only
had been backing up the main data file) or you can get them by copying the
saved reports from the user configuration... it can be found in the About
menu. I'm currently on my Mac, so the menu and file locations are different
than on Windows. On the Mac, both the UserData and UserConfig directories
are the same, and that's where my saved reports are located.

Re: [GNC] Account Register not Populating

2024-11-14 Thread R Losey
I don't know about this for sure (I guess it depends on the number of
transactions and the number of accounts); however, I have about 8 years of
data and my data file is 2.4M (I'm using the default - a compressed XML
file); your 136K size sounds like a blank new file to me.

"Bank" accounts should have headers of "Deposit, Withdrawal, and Balance"
(unless you are using formal accounting labels). It sounds like you were
looking at an Expense account -- they have headers of "Expense, Rebate, and
Balance"

Did they also copy over the auto backup files? If you main file is
"Robin.gnucash", they will look like "Robin..gnucash" - are they
all about 136k also?

Did you have your own backups of the main file? Something definitely seems
wrong. I hope the store did a full backup of your old computer and that
they still have it.
