Re: [GNC] Random List Maintenance Question: Regarding Nabble

2022-08-02 Thread Adrien Monteleone

Thanks David, interesting.

There is a 'reply via e-mail to' button at the bottom left of a
mail-archive.com message, but that would go by default to the original
author - not the list.

However, from the actual archive on the list server you *can* send a
message to the list, with the subject filled out and the 'in reply to'
header already set for proper threading. (though there is no
quote/citation, you'd have to do that part manually)

See the attachments for an example of a message header on the list
archive showing to click the poster's e-mail address there, then the
second screen shot showing the formatted mailto: link in the status bar
of the browser, the result of clicking the link is the opening of your
default e-mail app with TO, SUBJECT & IN-REPLY-TO (hidden) filled out
for you.

Adrien

2022-08-02 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
David,

I'm a purist. I don't believe it's any concern of the Gnucash project how
people choose to access the list information. I felt that the information about
nabble was Necessary simply because it caused so much meaningless overhead on
the main list.

In my opinion, I don't see any reason to attempt to tell people about all the
possible ways they might access the mailing lists. But if you want to add that
information to the wiki, *I'm* not going to be the one to question it. I've
retired from all editorial functions within the Gnucash realm.

Re: [GNC] Stumped on Mortgage Asst - Screenshots

2022-08-02 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Steve,

I expect others will give you ideas on how or what is mistaken on the mortgage
assistant.

I, however, am going to suggest a different approach, which is to forego using
the scheduled transactions/mortgage assistant altogether, and simply enter the
monthly payments manually.

The reason I suggest this is due to the fact that (as Michael Novak often
reminds us on the list) your calculations and the bank's calculations will
likely not match precisely, due to differences in base assumptions on the
calculation. Because they won't match precisely, you'll end up editing the
completed transactions. [For this reason, I truly wonder whether the mortgage
assistant is actually useful or should be included in the program, since it
seems to cause more troubles than it solved. That's just my opinion, however.]

If, instead, you enter the transactions manually, Gnucash will autofill the
transaction with the last entered values, and you can quickly modify the
amounts to match the bank statement.

A slight variation on Steve's suggestion.

I made the mortgage payments a 'Scheduled Transaction' with some nominal values
for principal and interest payments. Then, they were created automatically, and
I just edited them to get the amounts correct.

[GNC] MacOS - could not complete critical test of libdbi

2022-08-02 Thread km22
Hi,

I am a new user of MacOS having recently bought a MacBook Air (after many years
of being a Gnucash user on Windows and Linux).

I was able to open my existing GnuCash file and add some transactions. But
after closing GnuCash and trying to re-open the file I get the following error:

GnuCash could not complete a critical test for the presence of a bug in the
"libdbi" library. This may be caused by a permissions misconfiguration of your
SQL database. Please see https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=645216 for
more information.

This looks like a very old bug that was resolved long ago. I see comment #19
suggests to copy the file but that did not work for me.

Any other advice I should consider?

My system is:
MacOS Monterey version 12.5.
GnuCash Version: 4.11, Build ID: 4.11+(2022-06-25)

Thanks,
Ken

Re: [GNC] Stumped on Mortgage Asst - Screenshots

2022-08-02 Thread David Carlson
Steve,

I am not going to open your zip file, I imagine it is just documenting the
fact that the P & I calculations don't exactly match your lenders'
statements, which is a known issue, unfixable since they all have their own
way of calculating it. At least that was the case years ago when I last
set one up. Many of us, like Will, just accept the numbers as estimates
and correct them when we get the statements.

There has been some discussion in the history here about how to massage the
equations when we want to 'start in the middle' for an existing loan, for
example, but I am not sure how to find those.

Re: [GNC] MacOS - could not complete critical test of libdbi

2022-08-02 Thread km22
I have downloaded DB Browser for Sqlite and have been trying different
combinations of opening the file and remounting the drive and/or rebooting the
system. As best as I can tell, after I open and close the file in Gnucash
once, I cannot then re-open it with Gnucash nor DBBrowser. It seems the first
time I open the file in Gnucash causes there to be a lock. I need to reboot
the machine to open it again. I’ll experiment more but any ideas are welcome.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: [GNC] MacOS - could not complete critical test of libdbi

2022-08-02 Thread john
There may be some useful error messages in the trace file--see
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile. If you're also on macOS and using
version 11 or later console output is available again after many years of being
sent to /dev/null. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console, select your computer
from the sidebar, click start streaming in the middle of the window, and run
your GnuCash or DBBrowser session. When done return to Console, click the pause
button, and use the search bar for terms like gnucash and sqlite.

I've been encountering the DBI error intermittently in the last year or so too.
I can't make it happen consistently enough to debug it, and it has never
stopped me from being able to open a Sqlite3 file.

Regards,
John Ralls

FWIW I also occasionally get this error on MacOS using the default xml

window about 1/6th normal size. Clicking "File" on the menu options and
selecting my usual file from the last opened list re-opens the expected
file.

Cheers David H.

Re: [GNC] Gnucash

2022-08-02 Thread davidcousens49
James

You haven't really given us much information to go on to help you. What
operating system are you using and what version of Gnucash did you install. If
you run GnuCash it will tell you the version number in the splash window at
startup or as usual Help ->About will list the information. It would appear you
ar using Windows but we can give more specific help if we know what operating
system you are using

GnuCash will create a datafile in memory if you start it up without specifying a
specific file. You will need to use the File->Save As menu item to create an XML
datafile on disk or to save to a database file (sqlite3, mysqletc) if you are
using the database backend ( not a godd idea except perhaps the sqlite3 unless
you are familiar with database management. GnuCash will place the data file in
your home directory at wahtever location you specify using File->Save As. It is
usually a good idea to create a sub-directory specifically to contain the
GnuCash data files as GnuCash creates backup and log files (these have a
datetime stamp before the .gnucash file extension after the filename you give
it) each time you open it in the same directory as the datafile.

GnuCash is a full double entry accounting system. If you don't know what this
means you really need to read the introductory chapter (Basics ) of the Tutorial
Guide and the Getting Started section of the Help manual. The Help manual will
show you how to setup a chart of accounts and perform the common operations.
GnuCash is not a follow your nose application on a phone. The file Import
instructions in the Guide are out of date and not correct (currently being
replaced) and the Help manual Ch 6 has complete and current instructions on
importing data from other programs and bank downloads.

Where possible try posting a series screen captures of the problem you are
facing. We them have a better idea of where you are, particularly until you
become familiar with the terminology used in GnuCash to describe the various
components.

Good Luck

I could suggest trying to find a friend or possibly a Linux User Group
nearby to help you with those early teething problems with unfamiliar
software. Some people say to ask your grandchild if you have one. None of
mine use Linux so I go to my local Linux group.

OK, I didn't mention that the librarian at your neighborhood library can
probably find good resources too. This is the first group that came up
when I did a search on groups in Atlanta. I know that Atlanta is a big
community so their physical meeting place may be too far away but I think
they also have zoom meetings.<

Re: [GNC] Gnucash

2022-08-02 Thread Adrien Monteleone
James, of course, move on to something else if you really want to, but
there are lots of us here to help. There aren't too many places
(especially with respect to accounting software) to find such a community.

If you decide to stick it out, we can do our best to help.

However, *specifics* are crucial. We can't work magic and we can't see
your screen. Provide as much detail as you can, and answer as many
requests for additional info as you can. And if a request for info
doesn't make sense, say so, and we'll give more detailed 'instructions'
to obtain the relevant information so we can help you get the result you
are looking for. (if possible, sometimes, it just isn't, but that is
fairly rare)

When trying to diagnose a computer problem, specifics are key.

Generalities help no one.

Regards,
Adrien
