Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David Cousens
Jon,

It is not very clear what situation you are dealing with. One would not
usually move stock from one account to another as such. Their purchase or
sale would normally be recorded in an Asset:Invetment account of type Stock.
What you are recording is the exchange of money to or from your bank account
(another asset account) when you sell or buy the stock. If you are buying
and selling on overseas exchanges then you will have currency exchange
considerations as well.

The following section of the Tutorial and Concepts guide will be a good
starting point
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/invest-setup1.html

The sections in the guide following the one referenced above deal with
buying and selling stock.

You may also want to check out the introductory sections relating to double
entry accounting
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v3/C/gnucash-guide/basics-accounting1.html
if the above is not clear.

Sorry, I'm afraid you are dealing with a neophyte here.

I read the wiki, and I looked for the data files but didn't find
anything that looked like 'gnucash.20140131150812.gnucash.'

I recall having seen on here various discussions on backing up - is
there a place where I could find a set of questions/answers on doing a
backup?

TIA for any advice.

Do you mean backing up your accounts data?  If so then that is
something everyone should already be doing regularly.  A computer or
disk may go up in smoke (literally or metaphoricallly) at any time,
taking all your account history with it if you are not doing regular
backups.  See this for information on what to backup.
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Backup

If you mean you want to backup the software itself so you can easily
revert to the old version should you need to then that is not normally
something one would do, though I believe Windows has a mechanism for
keeping a snapshot of the current system so you can revert if you want
to.  You can always uninstall the latest and install an earlier one if
you want to, though it is not guaranteed that accounts data which have
been used with 3.3 will be usable with an earlier version, so you
might have to go back to an earlier backup of your accounts

On reading it I see that what is missing is how to find where the
gnucash file is saved. The problem is that where it is was specified
by yourself when you first saved your accounts file. Just as it is if
you save a word processor document for example, so the wiki assumes
you remember where that is. Presumably you do not remember that
yourself. If you open gnucash then you see the name of the file in
the title bar (I assume that is so on all operating systems). So you
just need to know which folder it is stored in. If you click File >
Save As then I believe the file browser should open showing the folder
where it is currently stored, so then you can close that save as
window and open that folder in whatever file explorer you normally
use.

I am trying this on Ubuntu 18.10 and when running it I get

Do you know whether there is a reasonably simple fix for this?

sudo apt install libboost-regex1.65.1

It seems to be working ok on Ubuntu 18.10 now. Subject to further

Another way to figure out where your current data file is stored:
* Open GnuCash
* Click on the File menu
* You will see a list of last-used files between the "Properties" and the
"Close" menu items
* Hover with your mouse pointer over the name of your data file
=> The full path of this file will be displayed in the GnuCash status bar at
the bottom of the GnuCash window

Thanks! For some reason I thought it would be an account preference

That is not the case here (2.6.21 on Win10). Either it doesn't work on

Thanks Colin for that info.  I was starting a search for libboost but
then thought to read the rest of the emails and you had already found
the solution.

Along that vein, the checkinstall documentation seems to imply the deb
file is good only for same O/S and release #.  Launchpad seems to be the
only open source platform for ppa but it is oriented toward Ubuntu.  It
does appear to have options for 32/64 bit and the various Ubuntu and
Debian releases.  However, their requirements for packaging are quite a
ways beyond my skill level.

I think we are in exploration mode at this point.  Checkinstall says it
is only for same make/model.  Colin found that he could get it to work
on Ubuntu 18.10 (my box is 18.04).

I am not that knowledgeable of how the various distros map to each other.

There shouldn't be any danger trying it, though obviously backup your
data files first. I uninstalled the standard version, ran apt-get
autoremove, then downloaded the deb and installed it. You can always
remove it again and install the repository version again if there are
problems. If the install fails or it complains about missing packages
or such like come back and ask. If it says it is going to remove
packages when you try to install the deb then ask first.

[GNC] Location of GnuCash data files

2018-12-31 Thread Stan Brown

True enough, and a couple of people have suggested how to find a file.

But word processors typically DON'T put dozens of log files in the same
directory or folder as the actual document. Because Gnucash does, when someone
naively saves a Gnucash data file to her desktop, it's almost immediately
cluttered with log files. The same was true when I naively saved my first
GnuCash file to the same folder as my financial spreadsheets -- relatively
quickly they were buried under a blizzard of log files. (Granted, I'm
exaggerating a bit, for effect.)

I understand the usefulness of the log files, but why aren't they written to
the temp folder? Or better yet, why aren't they written to a user-specified
location, with the temp folder as default?

Thanks to both Steve and Colin for replies.

I think I will try the .deb on my test system before installing on my
production machine.

I will provide feedback for both cases.

This sounds like an idea that needs to be filed as an enhancement
request.  I'd suggest an alternative might be to create two sub-folders
in the folder where the data file is stored:

 1. ./GnuCash-Backups
 2. ./GnuCash-Logs

That would keep them from cluttering up the main folder but be readily
at hand and easily identifiable.  Of course, I've used *Nix style paths
but the idea should port to Windows (I don't know Mac).

This feedback is good as it shows me that checkinstall probably isn't

Hi,

I installed gnucash 3.3, 64 bit on my Win 10 computer. It starts up fine.
I ran "Install online price retrieval for gnucash" from the start menu.
After about an hour, it claims Strawberry perl was not installed and
could not find it. Apparently, the PATH variable was not updated with
the paths to perl. It says to update PATH but I could not find where
perl was installed.

Next, I downloaded Strawberry perl from strawberryperl.com (v 5.28.1.1
64 bit) and installed it. It says it was installed in C:\Strawberry. I
could not find any Strawberry dir on C:. I ran repair...same outcome.
I finally found that a strawberry perl was installed here:
c:\vtroot\HarddiskVolume5\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
Why it was installed here is a mystery.
I could not find strawberry perl in any start menu.
I looked under Uninstall Programs and perl is nowhere to be found.

Next, I downloaded portable strawberry perl and installed it at
G:\myperl. I manually added the necessary PATH items. Now perl worked
from a command box.

I ran perl -v and the version showed up, among other things.
I ran perldoc and documentation showed up.
I ran gnc-fq-check (from the gnucash\bin dir) and it was not recognized.
I finally figured out it is probably a perl script.
I ran "perl gnc-fq-check" and it dumped a bunch of variables, the first
one being "1.47" (version, I assume)
I ran "perl gnc-fq-dump -v yahoo_json USDEUR=X" and got the US/EURO
currency info.
I ran "echo (yahoo_json "PFN") | perl gnc-fq-helper" and got the last
price of the PNF ticker.

Still, gnucash says Finance::Quote is not installed properly. I've
rebooted, I've run gnucash as admin, but no luck.

I go under Tools > Security Editor and click on the only security I
have, HYT and it says Warning: Finance::Quote not installed properly.

Now what?

Doug

Re: [GNC] Location of GnuCash data files

2018-12-31 Thread Adrien Monteleone
It should probably be filed in Bugzilla, but I think it might already be there.

I seem to recall asking this question myself some months ago after a thread
about user confusion over these files. I unfortunately can’t find the thread
and don’t remember the exact final point, but I do remember one of the devs
stated a good reason for why the present situation is what it is, darned if I
can remember it though. Maybe one of them will chime in.

[GNC] TXF export failure with 3.3 and 3.4

2018-12-31 Thread Tim Quinn
I’m on a Mac with High Sierra. Using either GnuCash 3.4+ (downloaded 30 Dec
2018) or 3.3 trying to export the tax report in TXF format crashes GnuCash.

The debugger output is below. Is anyone else seeing anything similar?

I have not seen anything on the mailing list or in the bug database.

Thanks.

Re: [GNC] Location of GnuCash data files

2018-12-31 Thread David Carlson
The thread GNCupdating advice seems to have answers that could apply to
this thread.

Adding to both: In the release 2.6.xx family, a simple method to find the
last used data file is to start the File > Save as process and see where
GnuCash wants to put the new file. Then cancel before actually saving.

Re: [GNC] Location of GnuCash data files

2018-12-31 Thread Adrien Monteleone
That’s an easy go-to method for nearly any application. I teach it to my family
regularly. It is very useful when they aren’t paying attention to where they
just saved something moments ago as most apps default to a standard preference
location (like Downloads or Documents) or the last-used location.

The same was true when I naively saved my first

the temp folder? Or better yet, why aren't they written to a user-specified
location, with the temp folder as default?

This sounds like an idea that needs to be filed as an enhancement
request. I'd suggest an alternative might be to create two sub-folders
in the folder where the data file is stored:

1. ./GnuCash-Backups
2. ./GnuCash-Logs

That would keep them from cluttering up the main folder but be readily
at hand and easily identifiable. Of course, I've used *Nix style paths
but the idea should port to Windows (I don't know Mac).

I do know how to record purchase and sale of securities, but that's
not what I'm asking about.

In this case I have literally moved the securities, by transferring
shares directly from one broker to another. No purchase or sale
occurred, and the basis information of the transferred shares is
unchanged (albeit only a portion of the shares in the source account
were transferred).

Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David Cousens
Jon,

Sorry for the overkill Jon.
In that case it is fairly simple. If you open the transaction in the account
register they are in then edit the account entry split which debits them to
that account and just select the new account you want to move them to in the
drop down list. If you click on another transaction you will then get a
dialog asking whether you want to confirm the changes. This will remove the
transaction from that register. If you then open the new account register
you should see the transaction in the register for the new account.

[GNC] Adding an exchange to the list of exchanges

2018-12-31 Thread David Cousens
Hi,
GnuCash v 3.4. I am trying to add a stock account for shares traded on the
ASX from the Select Security dialog in the New Account dialog. ASX does not
appear in the list of exchanges. Is it possible to add exchanges to the
list? If so how and where? I have tried using the Price editor but can't
find a way of adding other exchanges.

Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Jon,
David C. makes one suggestion. I would ask whether the destination account is
also denominated in the selected stock. If not, then gnucash will convert
between different commodities (e.g., between shares of stock and USD).

I am not at my computer to verify, but I understand that this field is a simple
text field with a combo box drop down based on prior entries.  In other words,
you can type your own entry into the field.

Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David Carlson
Now David Cousens, you are confusing me. If you are referring to
re-writing the original purchase transaction to correct an error, and the
cash that is also transferred in that transaction is also corrected to the
new brokerage account, then I agree with you.

If, however, this is a new transaction representing a transfer of existing
stock 'in kind' or some other asset which is not really sold, such as an
antique or art work, then it would be necessary to figure out the value
that the asset had in the source account and to also transfer that value to
the new account along with the asset. That transaction pair would be
similar to a sale out of the source account and a purchase in the
destination account. Again, there is an assumption that the same currency
is used throughout.

Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David Carlson
I forgot to mention that if the value has changed at the time of the 'in
kind' transfer from the original value in the source account, then it is
necessary to account for a profit or loss to the source account in the
pseudo-sale transaction and to assign the new value to the new account in
the pseudo-purchase transaction.

Re: [GNC] Tutorial for moving stock between accounts?

2018-12-31 Thread David Carlson
Now I see that I was also confused by the way that G Mail was showing this
thread on my screen. David Cousens' original answer was correct but it
was hidden from my view. The process is essentially the same either way,
the only difference being that for an 'in kind' transfer the sale and
purchase are just virtual transactions. This sort of situation might come
up in transfers of custodial assets in or out of trusts or other tax
favored accounts.

Re: [GNC] Adding an exchange to the list of exchanges

2018-12-31 Thread David Cousens
Solved my own problem

Tools->Price Editor

Hit ADD button
Type ASX in the textbox for Type: fill in the other details.

This can't be done from the New Account dialog for an account of Type Stock
however. The commodity has to be created first in the Price editor.
