[GNC] Investment price display

2018-05-12 Thread Dennis Powless
I'm running Gnucash 3.1 on Ubuntu 18.04LTS

I've noticed that the price in my investment register for my 403b shows the
price as a symbol such as 15 + 590/5893 when clicked it shows the
actual price as 15.100119. Another line is -2705/62981 and the price
is 15.429892.

Another item I've noticed was in the reconcile navigator, the columns are
not date sorted and don't seem to always have any pattern to them.

Thanks,

Dennis

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-12 Thread Dennis Powless
David
One thing I noticed in the directions was the need for swig2.0, this was
not available from apt while I was compiling on 18.04 and I had to search
and find the newer version. While I was getting the dependencies while
running 16.04 I was able to get swig2.0 from apt.

So, may have to note that in the Ubuntu 18.04LTS build directions.

Thanks for the help.

Re: [GNC] House renovation Expense or Asset?

2018-05-12 Thread R. Victor Klassen
Correct. And contrary to what others have said, it is more than a tax issue.
If you put home improvements in an expense account, then when you look at your
overall expenses and income at the end of the year, it will be distorted (yes
you’ve spent that, but it is an unusual expense). Having a more realistic
amount in the expenses makes forecasting easier. And that is a not
insignificant part of the reason to keep books in the first place, is it not?

This is an unintended side-effect of the fix for
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795101

The side-effect itself has been eliminated in the current maint branch
already but this hasn't been released yet.

Since you successfully managed to build gnucash from source, I suggest you do
a rebuild starting from the current git maint branch. That way you'll get all
the fixes we have pushed so far.

The import map editor allows you to delete bad mappings between strings in
your import data and accounts in gnucash. So if you made a mistake while
mapping you can correct it here. "Correct" in the sense that you can make
gnucash forget the bad mapping. It will only learn new mappings during
imports.

As for the maps being empty:
- do you have bayesian mapping enabled ?
- do you actually do matching while importing ? That is in the import
assistant at some point you get a list of transactions colored green, yellow
or red. Double clicking on the yellow and red transactions allows you to
complete them. This is crucial to build mapping data.

No, you can safely delete them. These won't we helpful in matching anyway.

Same here;

That's too much :(
The import map editor was designed to remove bad import map entries, so they
wouldn't interfere with future imports any more.

Do let us know if the import behaves better after you have removed the bad map
entries.

I only import into each account on a monthly basis so it'll take some time
to really answer this. For the account I reconciled yesterday I deleted
many dozens of entries; there were only two that looked correct. As I noted
in the ticket, there were many cases where account names appeared in the
Match String which, sans documentation, seems very suspicious to me.

Many of the new entries for that account look promising but I wish it
wouldn't create entries for day names. I can see use cases for that feature
but in my case, day names are noise. There are many one & two character &
digit Match Strings which will also be noise.

I wonder if the Non-Bayesian is better for me and if there are paths to
creating rules. I do wonder if Bayesian and Non-Bayesian can be in use at
the same time.

Oops, as I go to look the Preferences window locks up. Time for a different
ticket.

Bayesian matching tokenizes the description on whitespace. Each time you assign
a transaction whose description contains a particular token the count on the
corresponding token-account pair is incremented (and the token-account pair is
created if it doesn’t already exist). There’s no filtering applied to the
tokens; that might be a useful enhancement.

Matching is accomplished by finding all of the token-account pairs matching the
tokens in the transaction’s description and then summing the counts by account.
The account with the highest sum is assigned as the match.

[GNC] Keybindings Mac OSX GC 2.6.19

2018-05-12 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Hello,

I don’t know if I am going crazy, but I thought that GnuCash used typical Mac
key bindings (CMD-S, CMD-P, etc.). In the last few weeks, though, most of these
key bindings use the CTRL key. Although I haven’t changed 2.6 in a while, I
have downloaded and run 3.1 (without saving anything), and I wonder if this has
changed the key bindings somehow.

A few points:

1) If trying 3.1 *did* change the key bindings, how can I restore the older
bindings?
2) If 3.1 changes the key bindings this way, it would be very un-Mac, and I
would consider this to be a downgrade.
3) If the key bindings are being changed in this way for the future, it might
be advisable to alert the user base in the release notes going forward, so that
they are aware of them.

Cheers,
David T.

Yes, gtk3 writes different action paths from gtk2. You can restore the gtk2
ones by removing ~/Library/Application Support/Gnucash/accelerator-map. GnuCash
should write a new one the next time it starts up. If it doesn't, you can copy
it yourself from Gnucash.app/Contents/Resources/share/gnucash/ui/osx-accel-map.

Re: [GNC] Unable to retrieve stock price quotes - Australia

2018-05-12 Thread prl
Have you set Gnucash Preferences>Online Quotes>Alpha Vantage API Key to
your API key?

That's what I had to do to get AlphaVantage quotes working in 3.1 (on
Mac OS X), because my old mechanism for doing it in 2.6.x no longer worked.

Up until today I was running 2.6.
For years I was able to update stock prices no problem.
This stopped working in 2.6 some time ago.
I updated to 3.1 hoping that would fix it.

BTW I had to install Strawberry Perl to get the "Install price
retrieval..." working.

I've tried all the options available in the Security editor without success.

One odd thing is that if I choose AlphaVantage, US 'single' (I do have an
API key) for a few stocks they do not show up in the "Unable to
retrieve..." list BUT a new price is NOT added to the price database.

Would greatly appreciate some help with this.

Mike.

And with Alphavantge you must suffix the stock abbreviation with the bourse
abbreviation. For example, BHP must be amended to BHP.AX for its Australian ASX
listing

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-12 Thread David Cousens
Hi Dennis,

It would appear that swig2.0 has not been released for Ubuntu 18.04 but
swig3.0 has. Generally you can often use updated versions of the
libraries with GnuCash. It may not always work, particularly across
major versions, but always worth a try. If it works let me know and
I'll add a note.
Cheers
David
