It is unclear for what you are asking.

Do you want separate books for each year? (like in the old days of pen

Something else in mind?

[GNC] Problems Running GNU Cash V3.0

2018-04-22 Thread William Spencer
I am running Windows 10 Pro (x64) Version 1709 on my Lenovo M900 Think
Centre Desktop PC (16GB Ram) with all the latest windows updates applied.

I am having occasional trouble starting up GNU Cash.  The GNU Cash
screen starts up minimized on my task bar instead of full  screen but
will not enlarge to full screen when I select GNU cash from the task
bar.  It blinks and I get my normal windows desktop. (but GNU Cash does
not enlarge to full screen) which renders the program unusable.  Closing
and reopening the program doesn't help.  Re-starting my PC also does not
solve the problem.

I have been using GNU Cash for about 3 years without difficulty until I
recently updated to version 3.0

This problem has occurred 3 times in the last 2 weeks.  I have been able
to get around this by opening an older backup copy of my user data
file.  Which makes me think the program is corrupting my user data file
(maybe).

Odd that this difficulty started after updating to version3.0 on or
around 5 April2018.

???

Any suggestions?

I find it's *usually* easy to determine based on context. A Split, by
itself, usually means an individual Gnucash Split. On the other hand, a
Split Transaction usually implies a transaction with >2 splits.

There are, of course, times when the context is ambiguous, but I find
this is accurate most of the time.

To be sure, as an adjective, "split" pretty reliably indicates
the accounting sense.

As a noun it likely means the GNC-internal one -- but only when
coming from someone who's aware of the distinction. AFAIK,
that's a GnuCash-specific usage.

Counterexample: the OP wrote:
| I've tried to learn how to do a three way split like entering [...]
No problem; I do *not* mean this as a criticism, however mild.

My main point was to give a heads-up to newish users (or at
least, newish list subscribers) that they might see the term
"split" used in a sense they weren't expecting; and if so, how to
make heads or tails (umm, debits or credits? :-) ) of what's
being said.

[GNC] Change Account associated with a QFX file

E.. Thus, what in accounting terms is a

The reason we old timers don't see it that way.

In old pen and in on paper bookkeeping for each transaction there is one
entry in the journal (with at least one debit and one credit) but just
like with gnucash there would be at least TWO entries when posted into
the ledger, one in each of the (at least two) accounts affected.

Gnucash is a ledger without a journal (virtual journal; gnucash can show
it to you if you ask). It is doing just the ledger part. So to folks
like me (who grew up doing bookkeeping pen and in on accounting paper)
we don't see gnucash doing any splitting of simple transactions.

Re: [GNC] Change Account associated with a QFX file

2018-04-22 Thread David Carlson
I cannot find the solution that I used several years ago, but here is
something that you can try:
I don't guarantee that this will work so make a copy of your data file to
try this experiment:

1. Open the last QFX file that imports to the wrong account. Change the
name to something crazy and change the identifier in the file to
something different.

2. Save the file.

3. Start the OFX wizard and associate this new file to the account that you
erroneously selected earlier. This dis-associates that account from the
correct .

4. Now, start the OFX wizard again and select the correct QFX file.
Associate to the correct account this time.

5. Now that other account will be associated to that bogus so if you
want to import transactions to it you will need to associate a correct QFX
import file to that account.

I don't think that any easier way way has been set up yet, although I think
there is an enhancement request somewhere.

[GNC] Can not Open File

2018-04-22 Thread Phillip Walsh
I have recently moved to a new laptop running Windows 10
I have three .gnucash files, Walsh, PSF and LOA, all stored on Dropbox.

Gnucash opens Walsh and PSF but LOA gives the message "Gnucash could not
obtain lock file"

I have read various posts and deleted the Lock files.

When I then "Open anyway" I get "gnucash.exe has stopped working"

I have many loa*.gnucash files dating back many months, have not tried
them all but the ones I have selected do the same.

I have copied the files from Dropbox to a new folder and tried opening but
no go.

Any suggestions

You did not tell us which release of Gnucash you are using.

If you just switched to release 3.0, that is very likely your problem.

The solution is to revert to release 2.6.21 or earlier.

Had switched to 3.0.
Reinstalled 2.6.1, problem resolved.
Should I try 3.0 again?

Re: [GNC] Change Account associated with a QFX file

2018-04-22 Thread Gerry Matte
Thanks John.
I can't use 3.0 until they fix the import QFX function.
I manually replace the libofx dll and that works on my test PC so I'lll
probably update my production PC as soon as I can download a stable release
that resolves the problem.

If you're using GnuCash 3.0, Tools>Import Map Editor, select the "Online ID"
Radio Button. You can delete the offending one and then re-map it on the
next import.
