Oh, OK. So the Save button just *looks* enabled. At least with my current
GTK skin.

Added the .log files clarification to the FAQ page on wiki.

Nobody is working on this as far as I know and currently I consider this low
priority. There are other bugs that cause gnucash to crash or block certain
functionality from working at all. Those are now the main focus.

[GNC] Two currencies handling

2018-04-20 Thread Norbert Klein

Dear GnuCash Users,

I am fairly new here – no coding, just learning to use GnuCash 2.9.16 on
Windows 10.

I live and work in Cambodia, on a farm, where I do some administration
assistance.

In Cambodia, booth the Cambodian Riel (=KHR) and the US$ are legal, and
both are being used everywhere and daily. So for many bookings (in and
out) I have set up the possibility to enter either of the two
currencies. The basic currency for the whole system is set to US$, with
a standard exchange rate of US$1.00 to Khmer Riel = KHR4000.00

For Example (as we buy and sell vegetables):

I set an INCOME account “Vegetables” as a “Placeholder” marked for US$.

I set up two Sub-accounts under it, one in US$ and the other in KHR (and
in both are Expense and Rebate [why is this called “rebate” and not
“income”???] columns).

As it happens, there are vegetables SOLD in US$, and there are
vegetables sold in US$, and I make the entries in the respective
sub-accounts.

And there are vegetables BOUGHT in KHR, and there are vegetables bought
also in KHR, and I make the entries in the respective sub-accounts.

Of course every sale or purchase in Vegetables is also shown (“double
booking” system) in the “US$ Cash in Wallet” or the “KHR Cash in Wallet”
accounts.

Now I thought GnuCash will add up the sub-accounts – one in US$ and the
other, changing the KHR also into US$, and show the sum in the
Placeholder above of the two.

But actually, the placeholder shows only the US$21.00 which were booked
in the US$-Sub-Account, while the KHR2114400 are still only visible in
the KHR-Sub-Account, where they were entered.

I can also change cash US$ to cash KHR, or the other way round, with
ACTIONS and TRANSFER – no problems.

Where/when/how are the Expenses/Incomes in KHR re-calculated and their
exchanged values will be combined with the original US$ entries?

Please help me, I want to learn.

[GNC] Book backup script

2018-04-20 Thread cicko
Just in case someone may find it useful, here's my Python backup script for
the GnuCash sqlite book:

https://gist.github.com/MisterY/260f45fbcd7cec00acaa5284811eb41b

For the moment, I run it manually every time I create a few transactions I
would prefer not to lose. The script will copy the current file
(configurable inside the script) to a "backup" directory and compress it on
the fly using LZMA. It will keep a pre-defined number of files in the backup
directory(also configurable in the script).
It will also delete the .log files from the working directory to clean it
up.

Beside these backups, occassionally I copy a backup file into the "long-term
backup" directory, which I maintain manually for the moment.

The script can be used as-is and, if you have any suggestions on how to
improve it, please let me know.

Cheers

[GNC] Missing transaction

2018-04-20 Thread Ray Moritz via gnucash-user
I'm new to gnucash. Installed OK. Imported QIF file with 13 years of Quicken
data. Adjusted the Account hierarchy that was derived from the Quicken
categories. Then I connected with my bank for online banking features.
Everything up to then went great. On my first transaction download 12 of the
13 transactions downloaded perfectly, but one was missing. It was in the
middle of the pack and nothing unique about it. I later connected with
Quicken and all 13 downloaded.
Is this a known problem? Are there any fixes or workarounds for it? I
manually added the missing transaction so it balances.

[GNC] Transaction Engine (Making Tax Digital)

The API's for the implementation of Making Tax Digital are hosted on the HMRC

Subject: Transaction Engine (Making Tax Digital)

Dear HMRC,

When the transaction engine protocol for implementation of Making Tax Digital
is released, will you be releasing a free software library which will represent
a reference implementation of the protocol?

I assume you must of course have such a library for internal testing.

Releasing such a library will be essential to allow free software communities
to develop tools to implement the new Making Tax Digital paradigm. This would
also demonstrate your commitment to not adding significant additional costs to
small businesses through the implementation of Making Tax Digital.

What licence will the reference library be released under, and in what
programming language will it be implemented?

I have CC'd the gnucash mailing list for their reference (gnucash is one of the
leading free and open source accounting packages).

Best regards,

Richard Crozier

Hi, Norbert,

If I understand your message well, this is exactly how GnuCash works. Here's

Hope this helps. At least it should confirm your expectations and then you

If you're getting desperate I would suggest you resort back to gnucash 2.6.21

It's the second section (the first is for gnucash 3.0). That will take the

Re: [GNC] Toolbar ignoring gtk-toolbar-style setting in Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic)

2018-04-20 Thread Jonathan Kamens

I am puzzled by your response for four reasons:

1. Ubuntu 18.04 is using GnuCash 2.6.17, not GnuCash 3, and 2.6.17 is
still using Gtk+2.

2. I observe the same behavior in the toolbar of the Gtk 2 demo
application. It is not unique to GnuCash.

3. When I SSH into my Ubuntu 18.04 box and run GnuCash over the X
connection forwarded through SSH, the toolbar displays as expected (with
both icons and labels). It is only when it is displayed on the Ubuntu
18.04 local display that it's using both+horiz mode even though my
settings say that it should use both mode.

4. It does not appear to be true that Gtk+3 does not support toggling
the toolbar's display mode. If you bring up GtkInspector on GnuCash 3.0
and change the "toolbar-style" property on the GtkToolbar object, the
display mode of the toolbar will change dynamically, just as it does in
Gtk+2 (or at least did for me before I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.10).

P.S. Speaking of both+horiz, why do only three of the buttons -- Save,
Close, and Split -- have text labels when both+horiz mode is used for
the toolbar?

There is a thread on the dev list about this a week or so ago. It has to do

I’m not sure if work is being done to add the labels or what priority it has. I
thought there was already a bug filed, but perhaps not.

I upgraded this morning from Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful) to 18.04 (Bionic).

After doing so, my toolbar buttons in GnuCash are no longer large with
text below them, as they were in 17.04.

I like the large buttons with text, primarily because the graphical
icons in GnuCash are completely incomprehensible to me.

I can't figure out why my customization of this setting has suddenly
stopped working in Bionic.

I filed a Launchpad bug about this with additional details:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/1765401

Does anybody have any insight?

Thanks,

Jonathan Kamens

Right! For 2.x this should still work and it's mostly a matter of configuring
it properly.

One way to do so would be to create a file named .gtkrc-2.0 in your home
directory or a gtkrc-2.0 file in $HOME/.config and add the following line:
gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ

I never said the display mode is not configurable. What I said is that gtk has
removed the facility of doing it as a user. It leaves this up to the
application developer now to decide how to best handle this. We only
understood this when gnucash 3.0 had already been released.

The change that removes the user choice was introduced with gtk 3.10.

And yes, via the GtkInspector you can still tweak this (until you restart
gnucash) because that's essentially using the same technique a developer could
tweak it. But this is not persisted across gnucash restarts as far as I know.

That is how gtk works:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkToolItem.html#gtk-tool-item-set-is-important
The three buttons you mention are set imporant, hence they will have labels
when both+horiz mode used. The others won't.

Re: [GNC] Toolbar ignoring gtk-toolbar-style setting in Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic)

On 4/20/18 9:49 AM, Geert Janssens wrote:

Op vrijdag 20 april 2018 14:39:19 CEST schreef Jonathan Kamens:

I feel like you are not reading what I'm writing here.

My point -- the reason why I started this thread -- is that IT'S NOT
WORKING on Ubuntu 18.04, even though I DO have it configured properly.

I spelled this out in excruciating detail in the Launchpad bug I
referenced. Here it is again:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/1765401 . Please,
kindly read the plethora of detailed information I spent hours
collecting and putting in that bug before assuming that I'm a clueless user.

The TL;DR is that gconftool, dconf, gtk-query-settings, and gsettings
all say that I have toolbar-style set to "both", and yet GnuCash 2.6.17
is still using both+horiz. Creating .gtkrc-2.0 and .gtkrc-2.0.gnucash
did not help (though it did cause the output of gtk-query-settings to
change from both-horiz to both, though, again, that did not cause
GnuCash to do the right thing).

P.S. Speaking of both+horiz, why do only three of the buttons -- Save,
Close, and Split -- have text labels when both+horiz mode is used for
the toolbar?

That is how gtk works:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkToolItem.html#gtk-tool-item-set-is-important
The three buttons you mention are set imporant, hence they will have labels
when both+horiz mode used. The others won't.

I've been using GnuCash for over a decade, and I still find the icons in
the toolbar to be incomprehensible. If what it takes for both-horiz to
display a label on a button is for the button to be marked "important,"
then I'd personally prefer for /all/ the buttons in the toolbar to be
marked "important."

Re: [GNC] splits 3+ accounts, how to

2018-04-20 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Please be sure to copy the list on replies. Others may benefit from the
conversation.

Have you read the Help Guide or Tutorial & Concepts Guide?

You can find them both here: http://gnucash.org/docs.phtml

Those should explain thoroughly enough how to enter transactions with example
screen shots.

You may find it helpful to use a different register view than the default if
you are regularly dealing with multiple splits in transactions.

In the View menu, select Transaction Journal and also Double Line. This will
show you all splits at all times, and a ‘note' line for each transaction. You
can always toggle either back later if you prefer. If you like a particular set
of view options, you can change them to be the default in the preferences
dialog. (under Register Defaults tab)

If you prefer the formal “debit/credit” labels, that can be set as well in
preferences. (‘Use formal accounting labels’ under Accounts tab)

Regards,
Adrien

Perhaps I can provide an example that helps.

When I pay my mortgage each month I assign the total payment to 3
debit acounts accessed using the Split menu function.

The standard three debits (increases) are: Expense -> Mortgage interest,
Expense -> Mortgage escrow, and Liability -> Mortgage principal.

The total of these three amounts are offset by their total in the credit
(decrease) to my checking account.

I did somehow miss your bug report indeed. Sorry.

I have added a few notes there, though I don't know a definitive solution on
gnucash 2.6 either.

I thought 3.0 had made it into 18.04. I see it didn’t, or perhaps it won’t.
(not sure why it at least isn’t 2.6.19, since that should have been available

Where are you running SSH from? Is it another 18.04 box? Or is it running
something older? (or something other than Ubuntu?) I know I’ve had issues in
the past with Gtk versions on my local machine messing with proper display of
remote apps.

It definitely looks like Ubuntu did something weird to Gtk2 on 18.04.
We're certainly not seeing this on various Fedora releases. We'll have
to break out an Ubuntu VM to try to test/debug it, unless the Ubuntu
people can figure it out.

For the record, he meant "trouble-free", i.e., free of troubles.

When I first read this I saw:

  2.6.21 is trouble (pause)
free for the vast majority of windows 10 users.

So I figured I would just clarify what he meant in case anyone else

Re: [GNC] splits 3+ accounts, how to

2018-04-20 Thread Eric Siegerman
A few things I've learned the hard way:

1. A split transaction usually has one debit and several credits, or
vice versa. Whichever side there's only one of, enter that one *first*.
Otherwise things tend to get tangled up -- not beyond recovery, but it's
easier to stay out of that situation than to get back out of it.

E.g.

On Fri, Apr 20, 2018 at 08:58:55AM -0700, Rich Shepard wrote:

In this case, start with the (single) credit.

1b. Occasionally a transaction does want both multiple debits and
multiple credits. Treat those as an advanced topic, and avoid them
until you've wrapped your head around the simpler case.

2. Sometimes it takes some finagling to get right.

3. "Unbalanced CAD" (or whatever) doesn't mean "you've screwed up
*again*, you dummy!", as I interpreted it at first. It just means
"you're not done finagling yet".

Corollary: even if you've committed the transaction, and thus
ended up with an "Unbalanced XXX" in your accounts list -- no
harm done. Just go back and edit the transaction(s) in question,
and all will be well. To do that:
  - open the register for "Unbalanced XXX"
  - edit each transaction in turn; as you do it will vanish from
"Unbalanced XXX"
  - repeat until "Unbalanced XXX" is empty

Same goes for "Orphan XXX".

Perhaps I can provide an example that helps.

When I pay my mortgage each month I assign the total payment to 3

Expense -> Mortgage escrow, and Liability -> Mortgage principal.

The total of these three amounts are offset by their total in the
credit
(decrease) to my checking account.

I think what you may be missing is in splits, there has to be a line for
the current register's transaction in the split itself. So for example
the above example would look something like this:

Checking account:   $1000.00
Mortgage Interest: $100.00
Mortgage escrow:  $300.00
Mortgage Principle;   $600.00

When you do the above, $1000.00 would appear in the checking account
line from the split where you enter the amount for the checking account.
You don't enter it directly, but in the splits. So you're 3 part split
is actually a 4 part split. :)

Are you using Wayland or X? If Wayland then is it the same using X? You
can switch between them from the logon screen by clicking the icon near the
user name.

Re: [GNC] splits 3+ accounts, how to

2018-04-20 Thread Mike or Penny Novack

Ah .. That is what had me confused about "three way splits"

1) A single debit and more than one credit or a single credit and more
than one debit I would call a "one way split" (only one side of the
transaction is split). You enter these beginning with the side that is
single (enter transaction from that account) but instead of hitting
enter, hit split. That will bring up an expanded view of the
transaction. Simply change the amount (on the split side) and specify
the account and hit enter. What remains will appear on a new line as
Imbalance, change that to the correct account, change the amount to be
right for that account, and hit enter.

2) What I would call a "two way split" would be a transaction that is
split on BOTH the debit and the credit side. I suggest people not
attempt those until pretty experienced with one way splits. It will take
a little "playing around" to get a two way split transaction entered, so
for now easier to use two consecutive transactions.

To make things worse, the GnuCash source code uses "split" in yet
another way: each of a transaction's entries is stored in a data
structure called a split. Thus, what in accounting terms is a
simple, un-split transaction, is stored in GnuCash as two
"splits" (one each for the debit and credit entries).

One often has to stop and think about whether someone means
"split" in the GnuCash-internal or the formal accounting sense

Hi Gnucashers:

Curious, I am wondering if it is correct to classify TBills as "Cash"?
Suggestions?

Thanks,
