Re: Should we really translate legal notices?

2010-05-05 Thread Piotr Drąg

W dniu 04.05.2010 13:41, Ihar Hrachyshka pisze:

Recently one of Gnome localizers, Andika Triwidada, asked in gnome-i18n
if we should really translate legal notices found in Gnome software
translation catalogues. He stated that there is a policy for this in
Fedora Project [2] which states that asks translators not to translate
legal notices since such translations are risky if not approved by
professional lawyers (which is of course not the case for 99% of Gnome
translations).

Fedora Project has no such policy. We translate legal notices like GPL
notice in About dialogs, as every other FLOSS project do. This FAQ entry
might be misleading, because it not defines "legal notice", which I
believe in this case is actually just [1] and nothing more.

I'm sorry for any possible confusion.

Also, clicking on the "polski" (Polish) link makes browser download a
Perl file because of pl extension. Could it be avoided? Using a
convention like "index.pl.html" or "gnome3.org/pl/index.html" would

Also please remember to keep the lists in POTFILES.in/skip
alphabetized. Sorting plugin in gedit is helpful, but it doesn't
handle [type:] tags the way I wish it could (by which I mean ignoring
them), so you need to be extra careful.

And one thing more: your commit in anjuta was broken, you had a
trailing space in it. I've fixed it now.

String freeze break request in gnome-shell

2011-09-07 Thread Piotr Drąg
Hi,

I'd like to commit a patch from bug 658414 [1] to add context to two
"Sign In" strings in login window. I need different translations for
them in Polish (one is a button [2] and another is a window
title/command [3]). I'm pretty sure some other languages need this
too.

We are in a string freeze period now, so I ask for your approval.

i18n of app menus

2012-01-22 Thread Piotr Drąg
Hi guys,

I'm sure many of you have heard of the new 3.4 feature, application
menu [1]. There is one problem with it from the i18n perspective: app
menus are not translatable. Affected apps seems to be epiphany,
gnome-contacts, but not gnome-boxes and gnome-documents. The issue
with the former is that they use an .ui file which is not a standard
Glade file format, see [2]. I've tried to mark these strings as
translatable in numerous ways, but I can't make them appear in PO
files.

So my question is: does anyone have any idea how to fix it? Maybe I
should file a bug against GTK+?

Thanks!

Is Damned Lies using git.0pointer.de repository or the freedesktop
one? Because it has moved to the latter recently, and statistics in
fdo repo don't match the ones in DL.

What about strings with embedded markup, like this one: "Unfortunately
GNOME 3 failed to start properly and started in the fallback

Splitting strings is much worse than having markup, so I think we

Since my last email I have found examples of font size attributes,

New coordinator for Polish team

2012-07-03 Thread Piotr Drąg
Hi,

I'd like to inform you that I've taken over the coordinatorship of
Polish translation team from Tomasz Dominikowski. Unfortunately, he is
too busy with his day job to inform you in person, but I can assure
you that he approves this change. I'll ask him to confirm this mail as
soon as possible.

As for who I am, you should probably know me, as I am the sole Polish
translator for past few releases. :) I already have git account. I
also try to help with various localization bugs/tasks/activities, such
as keeping POTFILES.in up to date, finding and fixing untranslatable
strings, removing mark-up etc. I'm also the maintainer of Fedora
Polish translations, as well as many other minor and major projects.

I would like to become the coordinator in Damned Lies and the default
asignee in Bugzilla, so could you tell me what steps should I take?

Best regards,

In the first case I'm not sure what to do - should ampersands in URLs

Technically it's not a string freeze break, because the code already

Not a string freeze break, as it is an already existing string not
marked for translation by accident.

There will be one more in Power panel, but it's too complicated for me

Bug in Power panel in control-center

2012-09-18 Thread Piotr Drąg
Hi,

I want to bring some attention to this bug:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=684309

It's causing untranslated string to appear quite prominently in Power
panel of control center. Unfortunately, developers are quite busy with
blocker bugs for 3.6, we are in hard code freeze, and on top of all my
C skills are next to zero.

Maybe someone with some C-fu could make a patch and then ask for a
freeze break? I'd really appreciate that. I think it's important for
all languages.

Also, I'm not sure if these strings from bundled glib should be in

Thanks for the explanation! That made some things clear. It's sad to
see translations removed, even if they are old and problematic. I

Submodules in git.gnome.org (and how to deal with them)

2013-03-23 Thread Piotr Drąg
Hello everyone,

During the 3.7.x release cycle several GNOME modules has started using
git submodules. This causes some problems with damned-lies support,
which Claude, Gil and others are currently working on. It doesn't seem
that they will finish it that soon, and d-l is currently broken for
gnome-shell module, so please take a special attention when updating
your translations of such modules.

To correctly update a translation of, for example, gnome-shell, you
need to first update your copy of the repository:

$ git pull --rebase

Then you should pull and update submodules:

$ git submodule init && git submodule update

Finally, update your translation file using inttool:

$ cd po && intltool-update lang_code && cd ..

And that's it!

While only gnome-shell is broken in damned-lies, also
gnome-control-center and gnome-settings-daemon (and Banshee, but that
one does it for years) use submodules containing translations.

I hope this can help avoid any confusion and missing translations.

Best regards,

In theory, yes, however, the issue here is that damned-lies doesn't
provide you the latest po file for gnome-shell, because it chokes on
its submodules. In that case you need to generate one by yourself
locally, and that's what these commands do.

I'm afraid adding a context is in fact a freeze break, as it marks
strings as fuzzy (which are not displayed in the translated UI of
course). You didn't ask for an approval for it, but I think it's 3.9.x
material nevertheless. If others agree with me, please branch
gnome-documents from a commit before adding contexts. Please note that

There are still two new strings, but changing "Operation unsupported."
to "Operation unsupported" and "Invalid destination filename" to
"Invalid filename" would probably take care of it. Thanks a lot for
your effort!

Another string that was not marked for translation by mistake.
Hopefully it's the last one today. :)

Actually the fix was pushed after new strings appeared. The strings
themselves appeared after Gil updated Catalan translation, which
triggered statistics refresh using newer intltool. Intltool used in
the time of GNOME 3.0 hadn't had support for gschema.xml files, so
despite the fact that data/org.gnome.color-manager.gschema.xml was in
POTFILES.in, it was not in po files.

Obviously, there is 0% chance and need for 3.0.1 release, so it's all
for keeping clean statistics on my part. :)

Hope this helps,

There is no reason to update translations for these branches, as there
will be no new releases from them anymore. At this point you should
only translate master, gtk-3-8, and maybe gtk-2-24 (if you care about
legacy or Windows applications).

I've cherry-picked a patch from master which marks existing strings as
translatable. No string freeze break then.

freedesktop.org modules update stopped

2013-04-26 Thread Piotr Drąg
Heya,

It seems that automatic update of external (freedesktop.org) modules,
which I believe is done by a script, is stuck. Is there a way to make
it work again?

Best regards,
