Strings will move a lot before 3.8 and starting translations now will just result in a loss of time and productivity, especially since there are newcomers that jump on a module whenever there's an untranslated string. Looking at the various releases on Damned lies, I can see that no team has reached 100% everywhere. Marking lists for translation the right way

We decided not to wait for the context to be added and to translate it in the meantime. The issue is for "Unknown" which could be either masculine or feminine in French depending on what is the unknown entity. We translated it to the masculine "Inconnu" and it kind of works even if it's not perfect. It's not shocking to have it this way, just not really correct. These are two half-a-day events with different topics, even if they're both i18n related. The target audience and the agenda for the i18n BOF is different enough that we can (and should) keep the two separate events. Believe me, there's no split of forces, quite the opposite, as we're coordinating to have both BOFs be a success. I'll need to check further for room availability and conflicts, but I think we're going to schedule the automation BOF on 30 afternoon and i18n to 31st in the morning, which also leaves room for an extension in the afternoon if people are motivated and want to keep working on that topic. Video subtitles have four fuzzy strings, which are also present in the latest uploaded file, so you can archive and start a new conversation for the translation of those 4 strings. Acceptable, sure. Best choice? I don't think so. While a mailing list can be an okay tool for the job, Damned lies really shines in that context and was designed for that workflow. It's way better as it allows you to track the exact state of modules. You can see what's been translated and not reviewed yet, what's reviewed and needs to be pushed to the repos, or what is being left out by translators. You can also use the commenting system to have a discussion and I think this is better than a thread on a mailing list as it keeps the relevant messages grouped together in one place on the module page. The fact that you can diff between the submitted files and the repos, or the automatic merging/updating of files when new strings appear in the module, are also killer features that you won't find in a mailing list centered workflow. The inclusion of Coala in GNOME is a complex topic. First of all, the release team tried to change the process from module inclusion to feature inclusion, but they're not really happy with the current state of this. We have some cases of technology that originate from GNOME but are now widely used outside of it while remaining GNOME projects. libxml is the example that comes to mind. I'll let the release team give you a more precise answer on this topic. As for l10n, while we usually consider that only GNOME projects (defined by "hosted on git.gnome.org") belong on Damned lies, we do have a section for external dependencies (all coming from freedesktop it seems) but those modules all seem to rely on various external platforms (and teams) for their translations. I'm not sure how feasible it is, but I think it would be complicated to us Damned lies and the GNOME translation teams for something hosted elsewhere. One of the difficulties I see is that now we use Damned lies to commit translations directly to git.gnome.org. Again, I'm letting someone from the gnome-i18n give you a more precise answer. > 2. Hi Florian, While string freeze is only effective once you release 3.15.91, we're already in string change announcement period. There have been several strings changes lately in GNOME Shell and you have not sent any email to announce them. Do you have any other changes planned? Please make sure you announce them next time. Another possibility would be to release 3.16.1 without the patches, ask for freeze exception as soon as possible and commit them right after 3.16.1 so that we have until 3.16.2 to translate that. I see you haven't made the 3.16.1 tag yet, so that seems still possible. So today I had another look at stats over at Damned lies and noticed GTK+ was again at 100% in French for 3.16. I was a bit surprised since I didn't get an answer to my previous email with the above questions, so I went to the git repository to see how you solved the issue. If anything, it makes things even worse because now we don't even have a way to translate the message. Also it still breaking the freeze. As I said before, I understand that the probability of anyone seeing this string is ridiculously small. To be clear, if you had just said you would like an exception for it, given the context I would have given my +1 and I'm pretty sure someone would have given the second approval. I would really appreciate if you could confirm you intend to keep the string in there (and thus ask for an exception), as well as answer my question about a future 3.16.4. It seems important enough and it's just one string which is pretty
trivial, so here's +1 from i18n. Only one more to go.

The best approach as far as i18n is concerned would be to branch for 3.14 before 199bf86bcd6b1adb1b2b2725a7f8055bfac0c55e and then have the next release be a 3.18.x (and possibly also have a 3.14.3, but without the new string).
