[Gimp-user] How to make a set of curves

2010-03-02 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Hello,

I would like to make a set of smooth curves that are near to each other
and all are
just slightly different from the neighboring ones. Two examples of what
I am thinking of
are in the banner of these web pages:
http://www.sopra-sa.com/index.php
http://www.advancedmetrologysystems.com/products.php

Is there a plugin for such effect? How would you do it in Gimp?

Thanks:

2010-03-02 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Hi,

I have found a script that seems to be written to the purpose I want:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/22016

I saved in in my C:\Documents and Settings\Ábel\.gimp-2.6\scripts\
directory,
and called Filters, Script-Fu, Refresh Scripts. I got an error message:
Error while loading C:\Documents and
Settings\Ábel\.gimp-2.6\scripts\script-fu-shapes_0.scm:

Error: unable to open "C:\\Documents and
Settings\\Ábel\\.gimp-2.6\\scripts\\script-fu-shapes_0.scm"

What am I missing? I am working on Windows XP Professional, and Gimp 2.6.7.

Thanks:
Abel

2010-03-02 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Solved. I copied the script to:
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\scripts

I think the problem was the Á in the other path.
Windows doesn't allow me to change that folder name, unfortunately,
so I will have to use the above directory.

Sorry for bothering.

Hi!

I make a lot of word documents packed with photos and other kinds of
bitmap pictures in them,
and I usually make pdf of them as a result. This is part of my work.

From the behavior of these documents I got to the conclusion that Word
stores all bitmap pictures
in a jpg format. This is independent from the source of the picture
(whether it was inserted as a picture
file or just pasted from the clipboard.) So, every time I save the
document, more and more jpeg errors
are produced in all pictures. This effect can be reduced if the
resolution of the images is kept high
(eg. 200 dpi), but this makes the filesize big and is not an option for
all kinds of pictures.
This effect is mostly annoying in case of pictures thats natural format
would be png: that include
just a few colors, like drawings and screenshots. These pictures are
made ugly and make the filesize
irrationally big.

Moreover, when I print to pdf, all the pictures are made 96 dpi (just a
guess, it seems to be optimized for
screen), and full of jpeg noise. So, the pdf-s are even more ugly than
the doc. I don't know any options
that could be set in pdf creation.

I think that a good pdf printer should have some settings for image
compression, and office should have
more options. I only know of the compression rate, where you have three
options: leave it big,
set to 200 dpi (for prinit), or set to 96 dpi (screen). I think this is
quite poor. I know some about word,
but there is much more that I don't know, so there may be more advanced
settings. But I doubt.

So, if anyone knows an answer, please let us know!

You are right. I wasn't able to reproduce jpeg failures with Word.
I thought that it came from image compression,
but I wasn't able to make noise by it either. I will have to find out
where noisy images in my docs come from. It seems that Word is
more clever that I supposed.

For me it seems that the problem is with the pdf printer. I tried Adobe
Elements and
CutePDF. Both added jpeg noise. Surprisingly, CutePDF gave somewhat
better results,
though it was free and we paid for Elements, and I prefer Elements in
most cases.

I am afraid we are becoming more and more offtopic, as this is obviously
a pdf printer issue,
and probably office issue, but not Gimp issue.

Re: [Gimp-user] Selected elliptical area always inside a rectangle

2010-04-29 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Hi!
I would do it this way:
-Add alpha channel (Layer, Transparency, Add Alpha Channel)
-Apply selection
-Invert selection (Select, Invert or Ctrl+I)
-Delete the area selected
-Autocrop image (Image, Autocrop Image)
-Save in png format (that saves transparency.)
-in word: instert picture from file

Alternatively, you can skip adding alpha channel, if the background color
is white, the area outside the ellipse will be white, then you can save
it in jpeg
without problem, or copy the whole picture to the clipboard and paste
into word.

Hi,

One way to make an octagon selection in 2 minutes:
1. Use rectangle select tool, set to fixed size and enter a size with
equal sides to make square. Select a square.
2. Use rotate tool, set the object of transformation to Selection and
rotate it by 45 degrees.
3. Use the rectangle tool with the same fixed size, set the mode to
Intersect with the current selection (Ctrl+Shift)
4. Select the rectangle in the same position as the previous

Once you have the selection, you can stroke it or fill it with anything
you want.

alpha channel, right-click on the layer name in the Layers Dialog and

Hi,

You have to add alpha channel from the image menubar through Layer →
Transparency → Add alpha Channel.
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-layer-alpha-add.html

With an alpha channel, the default operation of eraser is deleting to
transparency.
However, if you want to turn white to transparency, you'd better use
Colors → Color to alpha.

Hi,

I think a possible reason can be: The resolution of your monitor is
better than the resolution set in Scale Image window. I tried and
experienced the same thing as you, and I got a 5x7 cm square with X and
Y resolution 89 pixels/in on my monitor.

The reason of this is that at 100% zoom level, gimp indicates each pixel
of the picture on one pixel of the monitor, independently from
resolution. Resolution and image size in pixels determine together the
image size in cm. The meaning of image size of 5x7 cm for eg. 72
pixels/in when your monitor has a different resolution is that if you
print your image with the set resolution, you will get the an 5x7 cm
image. (72 pixel/in printed is quite poor resolution.)

Hi, I don't know how to make a nice gel effect, but if I were you, I
would experiment with methods used in creating metallic effects to make
a shiny, 3d looking surface. I have once followed a good tut that I
think can be useful for your purpose too:
http://penguinpetes.com/b2evo/index.php?title=gimp_tutorial_metallic_text&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Of course, you will have to change this workflow to make a gel-like
effect. I suppose that adding some transparency to your layer and using
proper colors can solve this.

Hi,

When you paste a new picture into your canvas, it becomes not a real
layer, but a floating selection. If you click with a selection tool
anywhere on your current layer, outside the floating selection, the
floating selection becomes anchored down on the layer. Another
possibility when you have the floating selection is to go to layers
dialog, and click on new layer button (the white page). This will turn
your floating selection to a layer, and it will be visible anywhere
inside the canvas.

I've never found a way. I just use the "Merge Visible Layers" action

the linked ones visible, then use "Merge Visible Layers". Same result,
but a few extra clicks.

Re: [Gimp-user] Scaling / rotating images and focus

2011-01-28 Thread Tőkés Ábel

Øyvind have already answered your question:

"It indeed is, and this should eventually solve itself as GEGL is more
properly integrated with the layer stack of GIMP and what is shown is
no longer a preview but the actual result. For now the preview is a
hack that provides better visual feedback than just a bounding box or
a wireframe grid.

/Øyvind K."

This means that your request will be automatically solved in the future release.
You don't have much chance that anyone will spend his/her time by writing a
temporary solution.

How does one go about requesting this as a feature enhancement?

To include this in Gimp would vastly improve usability in this regard,
as well as making logical (and practical) sense.

But that's besides the point.

1. If I've set the opacity of the layer, then the opacity of that
layer should remain as is when I scale / rotate.
2. When I scale / rotate, the layer's position in the stack should
remain in its place, rather than suddenly appear at the top of every
layer when being rotated / scaled.

Surely, this is a reasonable request?

Again, I've found how the focus of the image being rotated / scaled
interferes with the rest of the working area. For example, if I
set a particular layer's opacity to 20% and the layer is at the
bottom of all other layers, why, then, does the opacity become 100%
and the layer suddenly appear on top of all other layers?

This makes it very difficult to work efficiently.

Is there a way to fix this / work around it?

The Scale and Rotate tools have an opacity slider for the preview...

Options Menu.

[Gimp-user] Can't read file header

2011-04-08 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Dear Folks!

My problem is not strictly related to Gimp, but I hope that Gimp can
help me solve it and
I am sure that there are a lot of clever people on this list who can
help me understand what is happening here.

I have appr. 100 pictures selected from the thousands taken of my
wedding. I would like to send them to a
printer company, but the software they give cannot use them because of
the failure that prevents IrfanView
from opening them too. The funny is that all the other picture viewers
can open these pictures, including
Gimp.

I tried to open a picture with gimp, then save it in different formats,
but they behave the same: IrfanView cannot open them.
I tried jpg with and without exif data, png, tif and xcf. The funny is
that if I try to open it from inside gimp by file>open or
by drag-and-drop, it opens it without problem, but if I try to open it
from the file manager, it gives an error message:
Opening 'C:\Documents and Settings\Ábel\My Documents\My
Pictures\2009-04-25 Esküvo\p0023.jpg' failed: Could not open
'C:\Documents and Settings\Ábel\My Documents\My Pictures\2009-04-25
Esküvo\p0023.jpg' for reading: No such file or directory

One of the images is here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QVOculUehRDqAywlBYIwwQ?feat=directlink

What is the problem with these pics and how can I eliminate it?

Thanks:
Abel

Re: [Gimp-user] Can't read file header - solved

2011-04-11 Thread Tőkés Ábel
Hi all,

Thank you for your guesses and intention to help.
The cause of the failure is the same banal one that I ran into a couple
of years ago - the name of the directory.

I am so misfortunate that my user account was created originally with
the hungarian special character Á.
Moreover, this folder included the characters ü and ő. For God knows
why, windoze allows creating directories
using these, however a lot of applications cannot handle them properly.
This is the case now.

I just simply copied the pictures to a folder that's path uses only
standard ascii characters - and it works!
