[gentoo-user] Ximian-Connector Version for Evol-2.2.1.1

2005-05-15 Thread Ow Mun Heng
GUys/Gals,

Is there a version of ximian-connector that works with Evo-2.2.1.1??
The latest version in portage right now is 2.0.2-r1 and it seems like
it's not compatible with evo-2.2.1.1 in which the EXchange protocol is
not recognised.

I've tried recompiling it but always end up with "Development Libraries
not found"

ANyone else has this issue?

It would be great to be able to solve this as I really would like to
have my Address Book back. (above anything else)

Has anyone ever tried it out? This is a Dell D600 Laptop FYI, would

Nope.. Gentoo by default uses gensplash instead of bootsplash.

Look up "spock" the gentoo developer.

or do an esearch for splashutils for the URL.

The perl script unmasks the packages recursively and it's quite nifty.
It works for others and not only Gnome-2.10.

BTW, Gnome-2.10 isn't masked anymore. It's accept keywords ~x86 now.

Just for your info, I went down this path like 2 weeks ago when I wanted
something new (i can remember what was it but I reckon it was either
gdekslets or some other app) and I just unmasked 2.4 and 2.3 stayed
back.

Of course I was surprised to still see 2.3 there so I promptly unmerge
it. Did I see issues? You Bet! Epylog didn't work and so didn't
gdekslets.

The solution was to re-emerge both of these (revdep-rebuild didn't help
at all) and then everything works.

That's my experience.

You may have some issues with this. I'm not sure. Go to the suspend2
website and check it out a bit on nvidia.

I'm sure someone has gotten it worked out.

on The contrary. It's much faster (very Much faster! ~30 secs for
writing up to 1.5GB of RAM to disk)

Also it's much more stable compared to normal suspend.

Or just comment out the "UnloadBlacklistedModules yes" line in
hibernate.conf. The blacklist is used as a blanket catch-all list -
if there's anecdotal evidence that it causes suspending or resuming
to fail, it joins the list until proven innocent. That way people
that want it to "just work" can get a useful error rather than an
ambiguous hang :)

That said, some of the modules there, (such as nVidia) have
potential workarounds -
http://wiki.suspend2.net/DistroAndHardwareSetup/Nvidia is a good
starting point. Though I haven't heard of anybody that has it working
with 2.6.11 yet. The free driver I believe works fine though, but
the tradeoff is 3D acceleration.

Based on my experience, the use flag for binaries does not propagate.
Hence, if you use a pre-built binary and you don't like the USE flag,
used, it's not gonna be helpful to you.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think those binary packages
propagate into /var/db as well. (IF they do, I think they might not
reflect the actual USE flags used to built the binary.

Frankly, I've stopped trying to grok iptables but rather I use a

Actually, isn't it a simple thing such that one can write udev rules
such that that disk will always be referred as TVstorage no matter if
it's sda/sdb/sdc/etc?? It can use for example, the DISK's or partitions
ID/Number etc.

Also, if you're on Gnome and you not heard of Project Utopia/Gentopia,
perhaps it's time for you to visit it and read about it.

Ps : Is /dev/sdb2 a removable disk? if so, perhaps gnome-volume-manager
can help (along with gamin/inotify/hal/dbus)

Well. It's simple to talk right :-) (which is what I'm doing)

I guess here would be where writing udev rules would be good.

Perhaps you can also try reading DSD's udev rules writing guide? (I
didn't have a use for it (yet) so I'm only going the simple path) :-)

Perhaps one can ask chinstrap.alternating.net since they do host binary

I'm sorry but I looked inside the content of a tbz2 file and didn't find
that it has any references to the /var/db directory.

And what does tbz2tool and xpak do? There's not much of a Man page for
them.

equery belongs `which xpak`
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/bin/xpak in *... ]
sys-apps/portage-2.0.51.19 (/usr/bin/xpak -> ../lib/portage/bin/xpak

In This case, how would one determine what IUSE values were used for the
package said package then? How can one use to view this data?

 tbz2tool --help
tbz2tool join DATAFILE DBFILE OUTFILE (datafile + dbfile -> outfile)
tbz2tool split INFILE DATAFILE DBFILE (infile -> datafile + dbfile)

I see. In such case, when we emerge -kv package will it list the IUSE
flag which the package was compiled with?

Do you know off-hand w/o needing to compile it on one machine (with
different use flags) and then use the package on another machine (which
has a different USE flag) just to see the difference?

Cool
$./g-binary-use.py
usage: ./g-binary-use.py

$g-binary-use.py /usr/portage/packages/All/liferea-0.9.1.tbz2
mozilla gtkhtml  debug debug

$ emerge -kvp liferea
[binary   R   ] net-news/liferea-0.9.1  -debug +gtkhtml -mozilla

$ cat /var/db/pkg/net-news/liferea-0.9.1/IUSE
mozilla gtkhtml  debug debug

True it does have the USE Flags, but looks to me like it doesn't
actually signify if it's in Use or Not in Use. Meaning, the "+" or "-"
doesn't propagate?

No..No.. you've already answer the question as above. Only now, can you
answer the 2nd question I have regarding the "+" or "-" and whether the
USE flag is in USE?

Cool. This works as expected. But a few more questions and this is more
towards how portage handles the Padded data in the tbz2.

Looking that the variables of IUSE and USE via

print myuse
and
print myiuse

I get :

['x86', 'X', 'aac', 'aalib', 'acl', 'acpi', 'aim', 'alsa', 'apache2',
'avi', 'bash-completion', 'berkdb', 'bitmap-fonts', 'bonobo', 'bzlib',
 SNIP ..
'kernel_linux', 'elibc_glibc']
['mozilla', 'gtkhtml', 'debug', 'debug']

So if I understand it correctly, what is being done is XPAK will take
the USE flags from the system which compiled the binary and then sort of
make a comparison with the USE flags for that particular package and
work from there? Am I right?

Doing a
$strings /usr/portage/packages/All/liferea-0.9.1.tbz2
gets me

Well. a DHCP server would most likely be needed if you plan on
automatically giving out IP addreses. But for a network of 2 pcs, it
might be overkill but heck, it doesn't really matter. Makes things
simpler esp when a laptop is concerned.

Open Source Power Management
Power management is sort of like the holy grail when it comes to laptops

the large variety of laptops in the market. Each with their own unique
implementation of ACPI and etc. As such, ACPI will be different in
different laptops and that's where the headache begins. Well, ever

[gentoo-user] Apache + Mod_BW experiences vs QoS

2005-06-02 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi,

I'm wondering the effectiveness of using mod_bw or mod_bwshare (which
is masked in portage) versus a solution that uses QoS for Upstream
bandwidth throttling/management.

The fact is that I'm trying to figure out which is the best method in a
virtual server environment which is hosting a couple of independent
web-sites.

Does anyone have any experience to share. My previous tests using QoS
may not be wholly applicable for virtual servers since I control it
using Port ports instead of virtual sites.

Anyone?

Yep. It's Plain and simple. We focus more on the magazine rather than
the site itself.

Though plans for revamping it are in the works

what email server?

If sendmail try clamav-milter
or you can search sendmail's site for all sort of milters to integrate
into it

Yap.. I'm running on gnome-2.10 and running gnome-volume-manager and
dbus and hal as well as gamin and it all works.

No need to fuss around with/etc/fstab anymore.

Gamin is the new famd for gnome and it's better too, uses the
new /dev/inotify backend instead.

This is part of Project Utopia or Project Gentopia which is being
tracked by Cardoe. There's a svn repo. Google for Porject Gentopia.
You'll sure to find it.

If that is the case, I think you can use amavis or amavis-new to
integrate into it. Should be simpler than clamav but don't take my word
for it.

I've not done it personally but I will one of these days.

(Even got myself the postfix book from O'Reilly)

So.. there's no menu at all?

There's supposed to be "app", "places" and "Desktop"

maybe gconf is still running? what about restarting X or dropping to VT1

YOu don't see places and desktop? This 2 has to be there if it's
gnome-2.10 unless of course you chose to use the compact menu. Meaning
only showing the "foot"

Project Gentopia is gentoo's version of project utopia which is aimed to
take the kludge and making hardware "just work"

If you really want to know, you can search for robert Love's
presentation files hosted on his ximian webpage. (whereever that may be.
I can forward a copy to you off-line if needed)

Plug camera in? Icon pops up in Desktop.
Bought a new HD? plug it in and it works. No fudging with /etc/fstab.
Need to have automatic power management? Gnome-power-manager will handle
it automatically.

stuffs like that works automagically.

Yep. That is most certainly a problem. Unless of course you're so sure

[gentoo-user] Port 512/Comsat and Sendmail or Fetchmail hangs

2005-06-07 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I'm not sure if this has been happening all the while because I just
noticed it this morning as I was popping my emails (via fetchmail).

The process would hang at at the input of each mail for a short (but
very noticable) period while it tries to connect to port
512/comsat. /etc/services states that this port is for new-mail
notification (biff).

I don't have biff enabled and thus I wonder what/why is it that it's
trying to contact it. I'm not even sure if it's a fetchmail issue or
it's a sendmail issue.

Does anyone know?

To me, it's not a focus on gentopia. Gentopia is Gentoo's version of the
project utopia stack (which is more GNOME specific).

for example, gamin is the successor to famd which works more efficiently
based on inotify.

gnome-volume-manager for example works with gamin + udev + hal + dbus to
make all the necessary messages to make things smooth much like a Mac
right now.

I don't think gentopia will be default for gentoo, but I do think it
will be for Gnome.

To me, gentoo isn't really for the masses, for those we have
Ubuntu/Knoppix/Fedora.

Just wanted to say this..

El-Cheapo cards will work, but may not be as full-featured or as fast
throughput as the more expensive 3com cards. eg: USD6 Dlink vs USD25
3com.

One Dlink I got was absolutely horrible. It will hang after a while and
then everything will stop. Once changed the card, it's OK. I think this
was a realtek chipset which caused the issue.

But in general, my experience is, if it's not for too much heavy duty
work, el-cheapo will be good enough.

you can choose to use debug more in laptop mode.

and by the way, it should be which process used the HD isn't it?

This is just a detection mech. Even though it says it will disable it, I
don't think it's really doing that. Because there's no cron-job to check
the remaining level etc.

If you really want to learn more about power management in Linux, I
suggest you google for laptop_mode or you can read the article in the
spanking new MyOSS Magazine at http://mag.my-opensource.org which lists
all the links in one place for your perusal.

otherwise.. try cat /usr/share/doc/laptop[tab]/laptop-mode.gz

on Battery it changes to 2

The 10 minutes is a guide only. It just tries to collect all the writes
and make it write only once.

Try this script if you want to find out what's happening or how long is
the spinup/down.

$ cat HDtest.sh
#!/bin/sh
c0=0
c1=0
n=0
f0=standby
d0=`date +%s`
while true
do
   f1=`hdparm -C /dev/hda | grep 'drive state' | awk '{print $4}'`
   if test $f0 != $f1
   then
  d1=`date +%s`
  c=`expr $d1 - $d0`
  if test $f0 = standby
  then
 c0=`expr $c0 + $c`
  else
 c1=`expr $c1 + $c`
 n=`expr $n + 1`
  fi
  echo "[`date +%X`]  $c seconds in $f0 mode. ($c0 s standby/$c1 s
active/$n spinups)"
  f0=$f1
  d0=$d1
   fi
   sleep 1
done

[gentoo-user] Anyone using Scribus Here?

Just wondering if anyone uses it. I would like to know if it's
frequently crashes with Signal 11 for you too.

As well as, if you use scribus, how do you use it such that you can
share with a team of 'users' worldwide. I was thinking of putting it
into subversion, but turns out the diff between revisions is _too_ much
text!

Anyone?

Actually I would use fdisk/mke2fs and tar rather than rsync since it's
much faster that way.

(tar uses block-by-block copy and rsync should be using char-by-char?)

Normally when I want to populate a new dir structure (which is empty to
begin with) I do

instead of issuing the command
cp -a /some/area/mp3 /other/area/mp3-store

use

tar lcf - . | (cd /other/area/mp3-store; tar -xpvf - )
tar lcf - /path/to/file | (cd /other/area/mp3-store; tar -xpvf - )

tar -czf - /directory/to/copy | ssh systemB tar -xzvf - -C /tmp

As mentioned, go with tar if the destination tree is empty. If you have
to abort midway, there's still an option to run rsync on it. So you
still do save some time. But note that rsync _may_ take up more CPU
resource than tar.

But one thing about partimage, I tried it once and going from a 10GB
partition in partimage to 20GB partition in the new drive, the new drive
only still saw itself as 10GB. I had to use partimage to resize and
extend it to make it recognise itself as 20GB again.

I don't know what happened and it was a long time ago.

[gentoo-user] Best way to build a Minimal Gentoo

2005-06-16 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I'm talking about something stripped down. Perhaps not to a size of 8MB
but something less than 100MB would be good.

How does one do that?

This will be a box which will not have portage included once everything
is up.

Most likely will be building with uclibc and the uclibc stage1.

Any other pointers? And how does one substitute bash(and others) with
busybox can it be defined up front so it portage doesn't pull in the
dependencies etc?

Thanks for all the help guys.. I've managed to get a minimal gentoo
running.

right now, the space stands at

total size = 53.6MB
ext3 journal = 33MB
kernel = 2.1MB (compiled with uclibc)
kernel-modules=9.5MB

BTW, I've subscribed to the embedded mailing list too

Thanks.

(Oops.. the kernel and modules are NOT compiled with uclibc and not as
stated previously.)

Well, I just followed the instructions on bulah.com

though there were some obstacles which I'm still trying to get right.
(for one, modules doesn't load, dropbear doesn't start, no network etc..
in short, it's still in-progress :0

du -chs /mnt/data/devel/MINIME/
23M total

7.6M MINIME-gentoo.tar.bz2

If anyone really wants to play with it. I can send you the tar.bz2 file.
but it currently does nothing other than boots and drops you into a
prompt. (i do have the whole devel fs at ~44MB, this is the one which u
can use to "emerge" stuffs.)

It does Absolutely NOTHING right now. I'm still working on it. :-)

Let me know..

[gentoo-user] /dev/pts -> how is it mounted

2005-06-20 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

I noticed that when I type mount, it will list

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)

as mounted, but in /etc/fstab, I don't have any specific lines which
calls for that to be mounted.

Where is it mounted? or where is the call for it to be mounted? I'm
trying to determine why I can't get dropbear to give me a tty in my
minimal Gentoo setup. (see another thread of mine)

I'm sure I've compiled in unitpty into the kernel.

from Man Rsync

 --bwlimit=KBPS
  This option allows you to specify a maximum transfer rate
in  kilobytes  per  second.
  This option is most effective when using rsync with
large files (several megabytes
  and up). Due to the nature of rsync transfers, blocks of
data are sent, then if rsync
  determines the transfer was too fast, it will wait
before sending the next data
  block. The result is an average transfer rate equalling
the specified limit. A  value
  of zero specifies no limit.

Well.. there is more than one way to skin the cat eh.

I still think you should take a look at rsync.

I do agree that rdiff-backup would be easier on the disk space. But my
current practice is to sync all the changes into a tree that rotates
every 7 days. (using the day before as a seed)

This way, if bad things happen, I don't have to do the find full backup
and apply the incrementals.

BTW, librsync = rsync protocol/algo? Same thing?

Please explain the roll back. it should be the same as with rsync No?

Do you have TVout working on yours? And does ATI binary drivers work? I
can't get it to work on mine. I keep getting the NO Screen Found issue.
If yes, can I get a copy of your xorg.conf settings off-list?

Thanks.

ps : I only wanted to try ati binary drivers cos I found out they can
use tv-out which I really want.

Wow.. That does seem interesting. (I presume this is if you do a backup
every 12 hours?)

When Does it do a Full backup?

[gentoo-user] Anyone here running MythTV (frontend only?)

2005-07-04 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I've got a question on Myth. I want to try running mythtv but the catch
is, I don't want the backend and the usage of MySQL and stuffs like
that. I don't have a PVR card (yet) but I still would like to use mythtv
as a frontend to play my DVD and AVIs etc.

I've emerged myth-0.18 with the "frontendonly" flag but upon running the
mythfrontend command, I keep getting presented with the setup screen to
for setting up the connection to mysql. (which I presume is the backend)

Can it be done? I would assume yes but the question is "HOw?"

I've also tried to put in the database, but based on the ebuild, using
the frontendonly flag does not package the database files into the
Gentoo tbz.

help please.

This edition _does_ have gentoo related items in it. Take a look.

On the other hand, what we're basically doing is just for the community.
It's called paying back to the community what OpenSource/Free Software
has provided to us users. (that means you too!)

What we're doing here is just the basic sharing of knowledge.

I'm not gonna argue with you on this. All I'm saying is, give knowledge
a chance. You may already be in the know, but there may be others who
will appreciate the news.

I apologise again for disruption your day and thanks for your comments.

well, if that's the case, then there must be something wrong with the
ebuild (or does it presume that the user has a backend somewhere and
thus does not need the databases in mysql on the front-end machine)

Yeah.. It works. I've tried it last night by populating the mysql
database. It works. But for some reason, mythvideo does not recognise my
video files.

For mine, it doesn't recognise it. I have to use the "list" view and
then specifically play it.

And I did. :-)

BTW, what's ppl here using for a frontend as a Media Player Box for a

I played with Freevo and quite OK with it, but myth has lots more
features built in. :-) (which is why I'm looking at it)

Well, I'm evaluating it because I also want to be able to record in the
future. But in the meantime, I prefer to be able to also view normal
DVD/AVI/RMVB etc files.

BTW, talking about tuner cards, am I mistaken to think that 3 tuners = 3
connections and 3 diff channels at the same time? I take it this is
free-to-air TV instead of Pay-TV eg: Dish/Cable etc? (which would
otherwise restrict the viewer to 1 channel per instance. unless they get
more set-top boxes?)
