[gentoo-user] fsck problems

2005-04-08 Thread Dave Weaver
If I run 'fsck -n /dev/hda3' I'm told that there are some errors:

  fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
  e2fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
  Warning! /dev/hda3 is mounted.
/dev/hda3 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Inode 131170, i_blocks is 64, should be 8. Fix? no

Inode 131212, i_blocks is 64, should be 8. Fix? no

etc...

However, /dev/hda3 is mounted as my root filesystem, so it's not
simply a case of unmounting it to run fsck to fix the errors.

I've tried booting of the Gentoo boot disk, but when I do that fsck
tells me there are no errors on that partition.

Why the difference?
How do I fix the errors?
Why does fsck tell me that the drive wasn't cleanly unmounted? (I
always shutdown and restarted the system properly)

Not sure it's relevant, but just in case, the start of my /etc/fstab is:

/dev/hda3 / ext2noatime
 1 1
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2noauto,noatime
 1 2
/dev/hda2 noneswapsw

Hey Nick. Yeah. I think I saw that bug and unfortunately this is on
1.0.7 and it stil happens.

Turns out I can get asterisk started if I were to add these into
modules.conf

noload => res_features.so
noload => chan_sip.so
noload => app_parkandannounce.so
noload => chan_mgcp.so
noload => chan_iax2.so
noload => chan_skinny.so
noload => app_dial.so
noload => app_queue.so

and I get dropped to a CLI after that. Not sure if it will work or
anything at all.

Will try it out later

Yeah, rules might be fine.
Will everyone follow them I wonder.
The risk with introducing strict rules for a discussion group (or list) is that, IMHO, increases the risk of starting flamewars.
People not expecting one or more, more or less polite pointers to

[gentoo-user] Sound on Presario 2800

2005-04-08 Thread smazanek
Hello,

I am trying to bring up sound on my Presario 2800.
I have looked at http://tuxmobil.org/compaq_presario2800.html,
however I did not find something like Intel ICH (i8xx) audio support.
Is this because I use kernel 2.6?

Whenever I start kde I get an error that device /dev/dsp cannot
be found. Can you please help me to deal with that?

[gentoo-user] OT - sudo doesn't do echo

2005-04-08 Thread Bill Roberts
I've started using sudo in preference to su'ing, but I've found that
"echo" doesn't seem to work with sudo.

When I:

$ sudo echo something >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
-/bin/bash: /etc/portage/package.keywords: Permission denied

I look at the permissions:

ls -l /etc/portage/package.keywords
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 520 Apr 8 06:11 /etc/portage/package.keywords

Then I scratch my head.

Anyone explain why?

This is more a job for *nix file permissions than for sudoers. You
might run echo with root priviledges, but that doesn't include
access to roots files. I would go the straightforward way of

chown :wheel /etc/portage/package.*
chmod g+w /etc/portage/package.*

Chris already gave one solution, but I can explain the problem. In
your original command, the redirection is happening in your user's
shell, not with the permissions granted by sudo. The command as sudo
sees it is "echo something".

You can use sudo with redirection:

sudo sh -c "echo something >> /etc/portage/package.keywords"

Oh - not to worry. Just people wanting some structure in their lives :)

I suppose I meant to quote this:

But never got round to it.

My experience is that strictish rules on forums/lists are seen by a
number of people "to be meant to be violated" - perhaps I've just been
on all the wrong lists (except Gentoo-users which I've found to be
extremely civil in comparison to too many). They also tend to bring

All leading to bandwidth vasting flamewars.

[gentoo-user] /dev/dsp: No such device... but mplayer has sound?

2005-04-08 Thread daniel
I just installed Amarok (I don't use arts) and it kept failing with this
error:

[GStreamer Error] ALSA device "default" is already in use by another program

Switching to the xine-engine rendered this error:

xine was unable to initialise any audio-drivers.

So I decided to wander through /dev looking for clues and found a few dsp's:

  # ls -lh /dev/dsp*
  crw--- 1 gabriel audio 14, 3 Mar 4 15:14 /dev/dsp
  crw--- 1 gabriel audio 14, 19 Mar 4 15:14 /dev/dsp1
  crw--- 1 gabriel audio 14, 35 Mar 4 15:14 /dev/dsp2
  crw--- 1 gabriel audio 14, 51 Mar 4 15:14 /dev/dsp3

They're there... so i tried cat'ing them:

  $ cat /dev/dsp
  cat: /dev/dsp: No such device
  $ cat /dev/dsp1
  cat: /dev/dsp1: No such device
  $ cat /dev/dsp2
  cat: /dev/dsp2: No such device
  $ cat /dev/dsp3
  cat: /dev/dsp3: No such device

Now this is the weird part. If /dev/dsp doesn't exist, you'd think (a) it
wouldn't be there and (b) *no* sound would work. But I just played an avi
file with mplayer:

Checking audio filter chain for 48000Hz/2ch/16bit -> 48000Hz/2ch/16bit...
AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 48000 hz, little endian signed int
  AF_pre: 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
  alsa-init: got device=0, subdevice=0
alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default
  alsa: 48000 Hz/2 channels/4 bpf/65536 bytes buffer/Signed 16 bit Little
Endian
  AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian) (2 bps)
Building audio filter chain for 48000Hz/2ch/16bit -> 48000Hz/2ch/16bit...
  Starting playback...

Xmms works too.

Now this is a new setup for me. It's my first amd64 system, so maybe I'm
missing something, so I'm hoping someone on this list might be able to help
me out. If this is an amarok bug, please say so, so I can report it.

Works fine here too. The only change I notice is in Acroread's behavior.

Previously, I had Acroread 5 and when I opened a pdf from Firefox it
would open in a new Acroread 5 window (with the ugly gray border,
toolbar, etc). After instaling version 7 it still openned in a new
windows (altough it had a bettter looking toolbar).

I tried to reproduce your problem by shutting down Firefox and
starting it again. That is when the change in behaviour occured. Now
when I open a pdf from Firefox, it opens inside of Firefox's window.

It must be something related to this change that causes your problem.
Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you what the solution might be.

There is /etc/make.profile.2005 which points to 2005.0, as well as a
make.profile pointing to 2004.3. I thought that took care of things - but
perhaps not. Besides, Daniel Drake's explanation is that Gentoo's site uses

such a person could easily use SuSE, Mandrake or Ubuntu.

If you do not need useflags, you do not need gentoo. If you do not need
gentoo, you are wasting your time with it. Plus, corporate users want a

In your output you'll generally see errors generated by gcc or ld, sometimes
things like missing libraries or whatever. In this scenario, consider the
'topmost error' to begin at the gcc command line used to compile followed by
the error messages themselves, all the way down to the reported 'include
topmost error' message.

Sometimes the error will come when executing the configure script; in this
case the whole configure dump is sometimes useful, but actually what helps
even more is the config.log file that was generated when configure was
running. This will be found in the
/var/tmp/portage/[package]/work/[package] directory.

This is because the redirect happens outside of, and after the echo
command completes so you're no longer root at that point.

Try:

sudo (echo something >> /etc/portage/package.keywords)

agreed. Some folks spend too much time inside the computer bubble
(where control is absolute and results are black and white). They then
think the same strict solution-set can be applied to a group of people
from all over the world with different personality types. Isn't it
"When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail"? :)

There's something to be said for law & order, especially pertaining to
maintenance of a civilized society. However, the assumed caveat is that
the laws (rules, here) are enforceable. If there are no means to
effectively enforce a rule, then the presence of the rule (and
half-assed attempts to enforce it) are worse than no rule.

Say there were rules on this list, and someone broke one (eg I said
"ass" above, oops, I did it again :) ). What could we do? blacklist
the email address? Anyone got a gmail invite? We haven't stopped the
_person_ from posting, just forced them to use a different account. And
now they want to make a point. Well, that's just peachy. We just made
the problem worse.

With the current setup, annoyances pop up, are mostly ignored, then fade
out. Effective deployment of the delete key is the best defense, IMO.
An MUA (like mutt) that threads mail and allows for the deletion of
entire threads with one keystroke is even better.

[gentoo-user] dispatch-conf problem

2005-04-08 Thread Botykai Zsolt
Hi 4 everyone.

Just run into trouble:
After some xorg upgrade realised thet my right ALT key doesn't work anymore.
Tried to set it with:
$ setxkbmap -option lv3:ralt_switch
but got this error.
 Error loading new keyboard description

Then checked the stato of
/usr/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp

and realised as it's a binary it contains some weird lines like:
1. line: <<< /etc/config-archive/usr/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp
Later line: ==

I thought it was dispatch-conf inserted this lines :-(

Currently I'm emerge xorg-x11 (-B) again to create a new binary.

Any idea how to avoid it? It's a bug?

Cheers,
Zsoltika

With what I do on my computer I do not *need* useflags however when I
was looking into linux (sadly I was a windows user for a long time) I
wanted something that would not only get me away from windows but also
provide me with a bit of a challenge. I picked gentoo because I wanted
things like USE flags and the ability to customize my system to my
standards. Its just as much a want for things like USE flags as it is
a Need for them.

Yes, it's a bug in dispatch-conf.

A patch to dispatch-conf was posted to this list recently (check the
archives) but there is a workaround: at the dispatch-conf prompt, press
't' (toggle-merge) to switch from the _mrg1 to the _cfg1 file.

Hear hear!

My point was really NOT that the concept of USE flags is unimportant.
It's that the values that are set for each flag is not overly
important for the average user. Like most things in life probably 90%
of the Gentoo boxes out there use some common small set of flags.
Software compiles. We users are happy.

For the other 10% that want to use something else, Gentoo gives them
the choice to do so.

I think that the active people here are mostly those like me asking
for help and those hotrod builders who give the help. I'm quite sure
that if I built hot rods I'd like to get the most performance I could.
I'm also quite sure that as I sit here this morning and type this
response that the USE flags this program was compiled with make very
little difference to my experience of using this machine.

I think it's GREAT that Gentoo has USE flags and that smart hotrod
builders can make use of them. I also think it's GREAT that people
like me really don't have to pay attention to them very much to get a
machine built, running and stable.

I'm far more impressed by the ability to search for an app in portage
and have it on my machines in a few minutes (I.e. - no dependency
hell) vs. the values that USE flags have been set to when the program
was built.

But then again, I'm the stupid guy who asks for help, and a happy
Gentoo user for over two years who has probably changed his flags once
in the last 12 months. (nptl)

Cheers,
Mark

I don't know with acroread 7, but acroread 5 was not a very nice plugin
here (it eated a lot of cpu). The solution was the noplugin USE flag. It
might help you with acroread 7

I would say corporate IT _managers_ want this. Users, as we were
defining them, just want it fixed if it breaks. Whether the management
decides to hire smart talent to do support internally, or (sadly more
likely these days) outsource it to someone half a world away, doesn't
matter to the user, other than the amount of time it takes to get a
problem fixed.

You are correct though that Gentoo offers nothing that the corporate IT
manager has been fooled into wanting.

OTOH, a significant number of corporate desktops are now leased by the
company instead of purchased. If a company decided to move to linux,
there is no reason their vendor couldn't start with Gentoo, customize it
for their PCs, and deliver it pre-installed. The level of control and
customization available (the brochure would say "branding
opportunities") could be attractive to them.

That said, I have a Belkin F5D6001v3 that broke, and they replaced it

I'm not going to recommend them, since all of the crap I've bought from

I'm a heavy amarok user, and just recently spent many, many, many hours
playing with alsa, arts, jackd, esd, gstreamer, etc, etc to get my
system sound setup and working correctly. The main thing for me was I
wanted to be able to have other applications generate sound at the same
time as amarok was playing music, with decent sound quality, etc.

My final configuration was using the xine engine in amarok (which sounds
great to me, BTW), using the ALSA dmix plugin for the 'default' device,
and arts for KDE and VMWare audio.

I really do *not* recommend GStreamer at this time...it was too unstable
for me. It will consume 100% of the CPU cycles when the music is paused
(playing is fine...), and will interact badly with dmix if you decide to
go that route.

Now to answer your question, the /dev/dsp devices are only used for the
'OSS' audio API. A native ALSA application will not use this API, it
will use alsalib and an internal alsa device called (normally) "hw:0,0".

When you played music with mplayer, it used the "[alsa]" driver. So you
know that the alsa drivers are installed and functional.

IF you need to run an application that only knows OSS (/dev/dsp), you
will need to modprobe 'snd_pcm_oss'. If you don't have that built,
reconfigure your kernel with CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL and CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS.

However, neither the GStreamer engine nor xine should require this OSS
API or device node...they should be able to use the same ALSA device as
mplayer. So, if you have a ~/.asoundrc file, try renaming that to
~/.asoundrc.sav, and try again. This file can be used to setup the
"default" device that GStreamer was complaining about, and maybe you
have a problem in that.

As a last resort, if you configure the GStreamer engine, you can specify
a device to use with alsasink. Try entering "hw:0,0" there, and see
what happens.

Sure, this kind of thing will work, but there's still a fundamental question
at work here...

Why does makewhatis generate all of these duplicates in the first place?
Gentoo is the first distribution that I've seen that this occurs on. Is
this a configuration thing? Or is there something else at work here?

Running fsck on a filesystem mounted read/write is not a good idea, and
is almost guaranteed to report problems.

Try remounting it read-only first. (mount / -o remount,ro). You should
probably only do that from single user mode, after unmounting all other
filesystems except /proc, /sys and /dev.

Even doing simple things like trying to wget the status page in order to

And you really can't script changes to the thing in any way that I could

The web interface itself has issues to begin with; the javascript check on
ip addresses entered in the form always tells me it's not formatted
correctly even though I know it is, and it won't let the form save.

Plus every week or so throughput drops from an average 160k/sec down to 3 or
4k which only a router reboot resolves.

Basically I think the things a piece of crap. I'm anxiously awaiting my pci

I think you said the kernel begins to boot, but that it hangs very
quickly in the boot process. You might try adding "noapic" and/or
"acpi=off" to your kernel options. You might also try "vga=0", which
will start the system in a text console, without trying to use vesa
framebuffer graphics.

kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc
ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda3 udev noapic acpi=off vga=0

I hope this helps.

Because it is mounted you're almost guaranteed to encounter errors. Try

fsck'ing from the gentoo disk is the best way to go (that's how I always do
it).

The problem I have sometimes is that I tend to do this, mount the drive to
make some changes, then issue the 'reboot' command w/o unmounting it first.
When I forget to unmount it then I'll typically see the 'not cleanly
unmounted' error (and I say 'duh, well I'll have to do that again...').

For some reason, I was thinking he was getting temp errors during the

Well I don't use this, but since no one else has chimed in, I'll give
you my best guess.

It looks to me like the wacom drivers are built as replacements of the
in-kernel drivers, which implies that you need to have the in-kernel
drivers built and installed as modules _before_ building the wacom drivers.

You may need to reconfigure and recompile your kernel with
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=m (and probably a few other drivers as well).
After booting from that, try the wacom configure and build sequence again.

No problem, but next time, remember snip a bit from my email. My emails
are too damn long to be quoted in full! ;->

I just tried setting my 'mono' and 'stereo' audio devices in xine to
"dmixer", and didn't seem to have any problem with it. This is not what
I normally do though...I setup the default alsa device to be "dmixer"
with an entry like this in my ~/.asoundrc file:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"
}

This way every alsa application uses dmixer...no app-specific
configuration required.

But, are you by any chance using something greater than "stereo 2.0"
speaker configuration in xine (5.1 surround, for example?).

You should only fsck with the disks unmounted and usually from single-user
mode. So its possible there is nothing wrong with your disks.

I seem to remember there is a way of forcing the system to run a full fsck
during boot by creating /forcefsck (i.e. "touch /forcefsck") and then
editing /etc/fstab and changing the last number on the line to a '1' for
the file system you want to check. (I hope I remembered that correctly -
someone correct me if its wrong).

Sure, the dups from /usr/man in /usr/share/man makes sense because /usr/man
is a soft link to /usr/share/man.

Looking in /etc/man.conf I see that I have both /usr/man and /usr/share/man
in it.

I removed the /usr/man and /usr/local/man entries, but I still get the dups.

I manage 4 gentoo machines that all serve very different purposes and I
rarely make any changes at all to the USE flags on any of them. But what
I do take the time to do is set the inital USE flags I want upon each
installation. But it's nothing major or detailed, just basic settings
like whether I want gnome or KDE support, or no X at all. So I agree
with what you are saying in concept, but I think what the others are
saying is that USE flags are critical because they come in to play every
time you do any updates/installs of gentoo packages. For example, I may
never change the USE flags on my server, but they are extremely
important because they help assure I never waste time or space
installing or updating X, KDE, Gnome, etc., and that I always have the
proper (and hopefully non conflicting) support compiled into my
services. I guess I've always considered myself an 'average user'
because I don't do thinks like mess with ebuilds, use portage overlay,
etc. I just install the stuff I need and I'm happy.

Ok. I'm not sure but I think my cpu/fan is working properly. Here is
what I did:

First, I checked my kernel and I already had all of those features
enabled. So then I thought I would try disabling SMP. This was
enabled because I have an P4 processor with HT technology. After
booting the uniprocessor kernel I successfully did an emerge without
my cpu overheating.

Is there a command line tool that I can use that will display my CPU
temperature and fan speed? I would like to test it on both kernels.

[gentoo-user] smbmount problem

2005-04-08 Thread Leo
Hi:
I've been trying to access a Windows 2000 server shared folder in linux.
I can mount the ///d$ drive
I can see most of the accented characters correctly.

I have googled the codepage used by MS (cp850, cp860 also works) and have
their respective NLS kernel modules available.

My mount command is:
mount -t smbfs -o username=leo,codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1 \
//

Á (A acute), ã (a tilde) and õ (o tilde) appear incorrectly ( as A, a and o
(no accents))

AFAIK all other accented characters appear correctly.
smbclient's ftp like interface displays the characters without any problems.
I mailed the folks at the samba list and was refered to the kernel guys, I
think they where too busy to reply :( Anyway I tought I might try this list)

Any ideas as to how I might make this work?
TIA
Leo

If your system reports cpu temps, you can look in the following dir:

/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/

Some systems have multiple zones and you can just:

#cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ1/temperature
temperature: 50 C

Same thing with the fan (check '/proc/acpi/fan/XXX/state').

Of course, this depends on ACPI being enabled.

[gentoo-user] /etc/make.profile again

As many did I followed the instructions to upgrade to the new 2005.0
profile and symlinked to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0.

As has happened to many an emerge -uD system -p tells me it wants to merge
the 2.4 kernel. Well, I'm on 2.6.11-gentoo-r5 and have been on 2.6 for
months. I checked the mail list archives and the forums and found no
answers there - well a lot of discussion but no real answer - Some said
why is it a problem, others had explanations but no answers. I did
discover that if I symlink to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/ I
don't get the error message but will that break something??

In short - it appears following the instructions breaks things (else why
have a 2.4 kernel recommended on a 2.6 system??) but is there a real fix
for this problem yet so portage will realize I don't want or need the 2.4
kernels?

how well does that scale? Assume ten machines. Then you have ten

done, ten machines updating their configurations. Now, multiply by 10

greatest possibility of surviving that scaling without needing a

there are hours sometimes especially one of the bit pigs (glibc/xorg)

as a stated earlier, I think there are ways of making configuration file

I'm guessing V.C.S in this case refers to "Version Control System",
which cvs is an example of.

[gentoo-user] PCI Conexant ADSL modem - API changes in kernel 2.6.10+

2005-04-08 Thread Stroller
Hi there,
I feel that posting about such obscure hardware is something of a
forlorn hope, but all comments gratefully received.

I'm trying to install a Conexant PCI ADSL modem on a Gentoo box using
the drivers at
.

The modem works perfectly using the 6.1.2.007-PIM-2.6-1.1 version of
the driver against the Gentoo sources 2.6.9-r13 kernel (which also seem
to include suitable ATM libraries) and ppp-2.4.3-r1 with the atm USE
flag set. A script is provided to load the firmware into the modem, and
an audible "click" occurs when this is run; the connection status can
be viewed using `cat /proc/net/atm/CnxAdsl:0` and ppp subsequently
seems to work - I get allocated an IP address & can ping the Intarweb &
stuff.

A week or three ago a new version of this driver was released to
accommodate API changes in kernels later than 2.6.10 (see
), and it's this one I seem to
be having problems with. The author reports no problems from anyone
else, but I get the same thing using Gentoo sources 2.6.10-r6,
2.6.11-r4 & 2.6.11-r5 and vanilla sources 2.6.11.4 on my Gentoo system:

  # depmod -a CnxADSL
  # modprobe -iv CnxADSL
  insmod /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r5/extra/CnxADSL.ko
  # /etc/Conexant/cnxadslload /etc/Conexant/
   bad ioctl 400c2502, Status=c0b5
Last record not found - load terminating
download ARM micro code (downLoadMicroCode) failed, NTStatus=c001
`dmesg` shows these entries:
CnxADSL: module license 'unspecified' taints kernel.
  CnxADSL: CnxtDsl_init Starting
  CnxADSL: calBusCtlP46RegisterInterrupt
CnxADSL: ARMALIoctl TIG_LOAD_START Prepare device for download
command=1074537729
CnxADSL: CmgmtProcIOCTL ARM Load command failed, command=1074537730,
Status=0xc0b5

I have no idea what any of this means.
I'm sure that my newer kernels are built with all the right options and
each time I have rebuilt the CnxADSL module using `make clean` with the
`/usr/src/linux` symlink pointing to the right place.

Since the newer driver is required because of an API change in the
kernel I have tried emerging linux-headers-2.6.11, and subsequently
remerging glibc, binutils & hotplug, all to no avail.

I'm feeling all pretty stumped on this, so all suggestions gratefully
received - I've stopped short of `emerge -e world` because I'm too
clueless to pin the masked linux-headers-2.6.11 against my otherwise
stable-x86 system. My best idea right now is to recompile the firmware
loader with debug enabled & to learn how to use gdb - I haven't used
that before, so any if anyone can suggest a numpties guide for building
& debugging kernel modules, then that would be great.

Cheers,
Stroller.

"dmixer" as the output device in mplayer, or the sound quality would be
very poor.

I don't use anything greater than stereo 2.0, most of the time I use earphones or just use the speaker on my laptop.-- http://zeegeek.blogspot.comhttp://ihome.ust.hk/~cs_snx/blog/ (for mainland)
