Well, I performed the upgrade through emerge -u world, and now I need
a new license to use my virtual machines.
To make matters worse, I can't even downgrade it. This is the output:

emerge vmware-workstation

So, anyone has any hint on what to do? I'm pretty much lost on this.
Also, why is portage offering an upgrade that will break things?
