Re: Incubator release area clean up

2019-11-16 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

> Discoverability/browsing/trimming/clean (DBTC) is the net effect, of your
> proposed change. No data loss.

They are not incubating projects anymore it’s fair to assume that they don’t
need the /dist/dev area.

If a project has retired then I think it safe to assume they don’t need the
release areas either.

If a project has become a TLP we probably need to wait until they have made
their next release before removing incubating releases. Hopefully the project
itself does this and cleans up after itself but as we can see not all do.

There is a possible alternative and that is to not have a incubating area and
have all projects just use /dist/dev/ and
/dist/release/. That way no clean up would be needed. The releases
still have incubator disclaimers and are likely downloaded from places where it
obvious they are incubating projects. But I assume their may be some permission
issues with this approach?

Thanks,
Justin

Removal of old incubator releases

2019-11-16 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

It looks like you have some old incubator releases here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/incubator/

We’re cleaning up the release area and it would be great if you can remove
these old releases.

If for some reason you need to link to an old release you can do so with a link
to the archive area under here: [1][2]
https://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

> everything is fine to you, I'd like to start request a formal approval from
> VP, Brand Management according to domain name policy [2].

The disclaimer text is a little odd "and are used with permission as of 2014.”?
Is this actually correct?

There might be a bit of a Catch 22 here in that that policy also states:
"Note that podlings in the Apache Incubator may not grant permission for third
party requests for their podling trademarks, only VPs of top level projects may
do so.”

I would formally ask on tradmarks@ anyway, however be aware that IMO it’s
unlikely they will allow the “weex.io” domain, but may allow something like
“weexexamples.com” or something similar.

Thanks,
Justin

This *can* be done, without problem. IPMC would just be responsible for
multiple dev/release areas. Not an issue. We auto-generate ACLs for the
areas, so it may take a little work to figure this out, but it's a Simple
Matter of Programming :-)

With that said, and with my Infra hat on, I'd like to see a thought from
the Legal peeps on whether the incubator/ directory structure layout is a
requirement (to supplement the disclaimers). I know there are distinct
opinions about what/how we host releases on our servers.

We would need to modify the clutch process, but a happy consequence could be a
version to look at the whole of the release directories for the whole
foundation.
