Hi John, it sounds like a good idea. I would allow "direct" communication between the podling guys and the mentors/shepherd (to discuss release or report content). @mike Official content does need to be on the mailing list but small discussions could be made on the hipchat channel. ~ Evan On Thu, 3 Nov 2016 at 17:19 Mike Jumper wrote: > On Nov 3, 2016 00:02, "Jean-Baptiste Onofré" wrote: > > > > Hi John, > > > > it sounds like a good idea. Re: Incubator chat on Hipchat?
I think it sounds good with a chat for more practical questions, like "How can I add userX to systemY on our infrastructure..?", but not for policy or release questions. And if there is no reply on the chat, then send an email anyway. A chat can also be welcoming for new potential podlings to ask initial questions, e.g. if they haven't got a champion yet. HipChat allows anonymous sign-ins, so "newbies" won't need an ASF account. We would obviously need to link to the chat from our web site for that :-) Remember: "If it didn't happen on the mailing list, it didn't happen" On 3 Nov 2016 7:32 am, "Evan Hughes" wrote: > @mike Official content does need to be on the mailing list but small > discussions could be made on the hipchat channel. > > ~ Evan > > On Thu, 3 Nov 2016 at 17:19 Mike Jumper wrote: > > > On Nov 3, 2016 00:02, "Jean-Baptiste Onofré" wrote: > > > > > > Hi John, > > > > > > it sounds like a good idea. [EXPERIMENT] Moving Incubator Website from CMS to gitpubsub
All, I started a little experiment to move the incubator website from CMS to git. There's a few reasons I've looked at it. First, I've seen a lot of cases where people commit changes to the various control files (podlings.xml, {podling}.xml) without running the necessary CMS steps to publish the website. I've personally not seen any benefit to leveraging the CMS UI and the staging area. I would personally prefer to leverage git for source control over svn, its what people are using more actively these days. We did some preliminary research. Since the CMS is calling build scrips via buildbot, its very easy to point a new buildbot config that can run the website via git. So I'm wondering, from the broader iPMC and the users of our website, is there any interest in moving, or is there a preference to stay on CMS and SVN? John

How about just promoting the #asf IRC channel on freenode.net? https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#asf Better for podling contributors to make connections to the wider ASF rather than to limit themselves to the current incubator, and the #asf channel is already well established. We could even embed the Kiwi IRC client in an iframe on the Incubator website, at say http://incubator.apache.org/chat alongside guidance documenting how we expect real-time communications to be used. https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/#asf"; style="border:0; width:100%; height:450px;"> Marvin Humphrey - To unsubscribe, e-mail: general-unsubscr...@incubator.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: general-h...@incubator.apache.org

[DISCUSS] Graduate Apache Geode (incubating) as a TLP
Hi! with the 1.0.0-incubating release officially out (huge kudos to the team!) there's an overwhelming sentiment among the Apache Geode community and its mentors that it is time to consider graduation to the TLP: http://markmail.org/message/y5jcaoykchttloyr Apache Geode entered incubation in April last year and since then it has demonstrated an outstanding willingness to be an inclusive, welcoming community that is not afraid to work through some really thorny technical challenges (like refactoring the core of the system to get rid of LGPL dependency) with exemplary understanding of the Apache Way. The PPMC has demonstrated a good understanding of growing the community by electing 6 individuals as committers and PPMC members since last year. In terms of mastering the rules of IP governance the community has produced 4 releases (together with binary convenience artifacts) demonstrating their understanding of ASF's IP policies. All in all, I'm sure I'll echo my fellow Geode mentors (CCed) when I say that from our perspective this project has been conducting itself as a true TLP and it we should recognize this fact by formally awarding it such a status. This thread, of course, is mean to open up the very same discussion that we had among the mentors and Geode community to the rest of the IPMC. [DISCUSS] RocketMQ Incubation Proposal
Please find below a proposal for a new Incubator podling named Apache RocketMQ, a fast, low latency, reliable, scalable, distributed, easy to use message-oriented middleware, especially for processing large amounts of streaming data. The draft proposal can be found in the wiki at the following URL: https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/RocketMQProposal Below, please find the text for the proposal below. Thanks, Bruce = RocketMQ Proposal = == Abstract == RocketMQ is a fast, low latency, reliable, scalable, distributed, easy to use message-oriented middleware, especially for processing large amounts of streaming data. == Proposal == RocketMQ provides a message model including both pub/sub and P2P and it supports both reliable FIFO and strict sequential message queues. It also has the ability to accumulate a billion messages in a single queue, provides mobile, internet-friendly protocols such as MQTT and HTTP. RocketMQ also supports the ability to load data into Apache Hadoop for offline storage or to handle stream processing for Apache Storm. == Background == RocketMQ was developed at Alibaba in 2011 and has been used in production there since that time. It can process the large amounts of events generated by various systems and provides a common repository for many types of consumers to access and process those events. RocketMQ also handles dozens of types of events including trade order process, search, social network activity stream and data pipeline. Every day at Alibaba, RocketMQ clusters process more than 500 billion events. The Alibaba Group also uses RocketMQ to provide message services for more than 3000 core applications. RocketMQ was developed to meet Alibaba's particular use cases to provide low latency message delivery and high throughput message sending. Alibaba has also created its cornerstone product based on RocketMQ, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) product named the Alibaba Cloud Platform ( https://intl.aliyun.com/). More than 100 companies use the RocketMQ open source version today. We believe RocketMQ can benefit more people so, we would like to share it via the ASF and begin developing a community of developers and users via The Apache Way. == Rationale == As background description, many organizations can benefit from a low latency, reliable, high throughput, distributed platform. Its usage is varied and we expect many new use cases to emerge. RocketMQ provides many features to support many use cases from enterprise application integration, to web applications to the flourishing of IoT applications. == Current Status == === Meritocracy === The intent of this proposal is to start building a diverse developer and user community around RocketMQ following the ASF meritocracy model. Since RocketMQ was open sourced, we have solicited contributions via the website and presentations given to user groups and technical audiences and have received positive feedback and contributions including clients for C++ and .NET. We plan to continue this support for new contributors and work with those who contribute significantly to the project to encourage them to become committers. === Community === RocketMQ is currently being developed by engineers working for Alibaba where it is highly used in a production environment. We also have active users in or have received contributions from a diverse set of companies including CMBC(China Minsheng Bank), Schneider Electric( http://www.schneider-electric.com/), the China Railway Ministry official ticketing website, China Union, Sina, Umei (http://sh.jumei.com), Chinese Academy of Sciences and many more. We hope to grow the base of contributors by inviting all those who offer significant contributions and excel through the use of The Apache Way. Contributions from outside of Alibaba are now being received by the RocketMQ project, including a dashboard, the flume-rocketmq module, the storm-rocketmq and more. To further this goal, the project currently makes use of GitHub project features as well as a public mailing list via Google Groups. === Core Developers === RocketMQ is currently being developed by engineers from Alibaba and Yeahmobi: Xiaorui Wang, Von Gosling, Jiangwei Jiang, Xinyu Zhou, Zhanhui Li. Xiaorui Wang, one of Alibaba MOM project owners is also the originator of the RocketMQ project. He has rich experience with open source software, as well as being active within the RocketMQ community. Von Gosling, another MOM project owner at Alibaba and co-creator of the RocketMQ project, is an active open source software committer and has been an active contributor to several projects in Alibaba, Apache community and Google Code. Von also has deep experience with performance tuning, distributed system design and coding. Longda, has been involved with several open source projects released by Alibaba, especially jstorm project, which has donated to apache. Xinyu Zhou and Wei Zhou, They have rich experience in distributed system design and perform
Re: [DISCUSS] RocketMQ Incubation Proposal
Bruce, While Willem and Luke are both foundation members, neither is on the IPMC. That's easy enough to rectify if you can get them to send appropriate emails out requesting membership. I'm assuming the mailing lists will all be in the new format of list@rocketmq.i.a.o The RocketMQ github site mentions "Alibaba's MQ, also aliyun ONS. http://www.aliyun.com/product/ons"; Can you explain the relationship to Aliyun ONS? (the link is dead) I notice that the revision history is pretty sparse. I'm assuming that it was mostly maintained internal and not fully open sourced until recently? I notice in the proposal that its mentioned RocketMQ doesn't integration with existing Apache projects - but it currently declares dependencies on Commons IO, CLI, Derby to name a few. The only license that sticks out is JNA, which itself has a weird licensing scheme. Not a blocker for incubation, but may require some trickery at release time. Apache Impala (incubating) | ASF Crypto regulations
Hi, One of our mentors pointed us to the ASF crypto regulations: https://www.apache.org/dev/crypto.html Apache Impala (incubating) uses OpenSSL for asymmetric cryptography, so we are in the process of adding our project to the list of Export projects: http://www.apache.org/licenses/exports/ We are also adding the export notice to our codebase: https://gerrit.cloudera.org/#/c/4940/ We require a notification mail to be sent to the US Government regarding the same which the page says should be done by the PMC chair. Since we are still incubating, that would be the incubator-pmc chair. Is this the right place to raise this request? Or should I contact the PMC chair directly in order for the mail to be sent? Regards, Sailesh
Re: Incubator chat on Hipchat?
For the NetBeans community we had been using IRC, but then setup Slack, and it has seen an uptick over IRC which per logging and notifications had been harder to support and stay connected. We setup a sign up bot at https://netbeans.signup.team, and we also have a chat room hooked/bridged to our IRC channel, so we service both as a collective; good on mobiles too. We have as an item to talk to Slack about OSS and limits/restrictions. We don't intend it to replace mailing lists, Jira, nor the wiki, but look at it as dynamic chats and community building allowing to have hack, help, or real time hang time sessions. We didn't know about the Apache HipChat, but I must confess I much prefer Slack having used both during my day job. +1. Luke is very warmhearted in helping Chinese Projects in the ASF, Luke has provided a lot of help in our projects RocketMq and Weex, in the last two years, he has introduced "the Apache Way" in a lot of Chinese Open Source Conference or Meetup. As we all know, he has involved more than 10 projects, further more , the number of projects which he is one of mentors is more than 5 (sorry, I have no the detailed number). For a simple POC, I was going to just copy latest and use that. My machine gave up after 46k revisions trying to do a git-svn conversion of the incubator. Other than potentially asking for infra help on doing the git conversion, and the actual setup of domains, not much would be needed. Probably some doc updates (how to update the site would change a bit). I'd also seek out some usability style testing from other users to make sure they're comfortable before doing anything permanent. > > -Bertrand > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: general-unsubscr...@incubator.apache.org > For additional commands, e-mail: general-h...@incubator.apache.org > >

We want to donate this project to the ASF and incubate this project in ASF. At the same time, due to there is few project in the UI field, If the project can incubate in the ASF, I think more wonderful projects in these field will join ASF in the future. Right now, there are 4 mentors in our project, but we are seeking one champion for our project. If you are interested in this project or want to help us, please feel free to contact us. Thanks Longda The following is the Weex proposal Weex Proposal === ## Abstract Weex is a framework for building Mobile cross-platform UI. ## Proposal Weex allows developers to build iOS,Android and Web user interface with a single codebase. Compared with WebView based UI framework which performance and features are limited, Weex preserves its lightweight development pattern and improve the user experience by high-quality native view and native features at the same time.. Weex provide a tag based language which maintained a consistent style with Web standards. Developers write in this language just like writting in HTML. After transforming to JSBundle by Weex build-in tools, these tag will be render to higher-level platform-specific components using Weex SDK. Because Weex use JavaScript as UI operation and data processing language which don't need compile before execute in user's Mobile phone. Interface implemented by Weex is "Dynamic". At the time of this writing , another famed dynamic Native UI framework is React Native which developed by Facebook Inc . Weex and React Native share some common features but have different language syntax. React Native use specific JSX , whereas Weex use vanilla Javascript .React Native set target that to replace whole Mobile App development process, whereas Weex allow developer choose which page in Mobile App should be implemented by Weex freely. At principle level React Native adopt "Learn Once, Write Anywhere", whereas Weex keep "Write Once, Run Everywhere" on different platform development environment. We think Weex is an effective supplement to Apache Cordova. Both Apache Cordova and Weex help developer for leveraging Web development technique in Mobile age. Boot developer the ability of delivering consistent content to different platform. With our sincere heart and determination to open source , we will always keep an open mind for Apache Cordova community. ## Background Prior to Weex, in order to develop high performance mobile application we need write at least three different codebase(iOS,Android,Mobile Web) or adopt WebView based UI technique(Apache Cordova for example) which can't satisfy the demand for neat user experience on critical Interactive scenes. Re: [DISCUSS] RocketMQ Incubation Proposal
Hi,John: 1. Our mentor Luke and Willem will rectify IPMC membership later. Thank you for reminding😀~ 2. About another mentioned product ONS( is the abbreviation for Open Notification Service),which is maintained by Alibaba. Custom-built product for enterprise and cloud application. It based on RocketMQ(RocketMQ not depend ONS),adding some value added service, such as security, audit, web console etc. We asked about RocketMQ brand thing with ASF chairman Ross when he came to china previously,so we make another name ONS since then~ 3. Sparse revision. hah~~~ It can be talked about from la long time ago, our one core committer commit some sensitive data in Github because of oversight. Some one day, our Security department supervisor found me, “Why do you commit some company related secret data to Github, Why ?” The end of the story is the same as you think. Because revision history, we must erase it. So we reset our commit history using git command. BTW, RocketMQ has open source since 2012. For simplicity in local community, we also push our code to our local famous Git repository except for Github(But it's unlucky, we also erase it in last scavenging activity). We want to develop borderless open source and make the same release pace within company. So, we comply with apache way, also hope some advice from community to help us improve our product. 4. It was a slight overlook on my part. Derby and Apache Commons-IO dependency can be removed(Its' useless in our latest version ). RocketMQ uses JNA to solve the latency issue in storage, and we found that JNA also is under the Apache Software License( https://github.com/java-native-access/jna#license). If JNA is incompatible with Apache License, we can replace it with JNI, actually we are planning to do this. Last but not important, we hope to more and more people join us, we are always very happy to have contributions, whether for trivial cleanups, big new features or other material rewards. For this purpose, we started one issue thread(https://github.com/alibaba/RocketMQ/issues/353) to assemble some enthusiast to join us. to make our community more active, to make our service more attractive~ 2016-11-04 6:42 GMT+08:00 John D.
