Ecolog-L 2 Postdoctoral Positions in Population Viability Modelling and Conservation Genomics

2025-03-03 Thread Jamie Gorrell
Posting Date: March 2, 2025
We invite applications for TWO Postdoctoral Fellows in the Department of
Ecosystem Science and Management at the University of Northern British Columbia
(UNBC) with a start date in Summer 2025. One position will focus on Population
Growth and Viability Modelling and the other on Conservation Genomics. Both
positions are full-time for a term of 2 years with the possibility of extension
to 3 years.
The Postdocs will work in partnership with the Marmot Recovery Foundation
(MRF), a charitable organization whose mission is to recover the wild
population of the endemic and critically endangered Vancouver Island marmot
(Marmota vancouverensis). MRF has been collecting population data for over 25
years and has DNA samples from ~1,000 individuals.
We seek candidates who will contribute novel applied research to advance marmot
conservation by studying historical population trends, building population
viability models to directly guide in-the-wild recovery efforts, sequencing
genomes to estimate diversity/inbreeding/relatedness, and developing the first
genotype-informed conservation breeding program in Canada. The successful
candidates will play integral roles in shaping ongoing conservation actions and
be part of a multidisciplinary team composed of academics, veterinarians,
managers, and conservation biologists from UNBC, Vancouver Island University,
MRF, Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, and Provincial and Federal Governments.
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D., within the previous four years or will
be awarded within three months of beginning the Fellowship, in biology or a
closely related discipline and have demonstrated experience with population

2025-03-03 Thread Will Petry (via ecolog-l list)
Full job ad and application: https://jobs.ncsu.edu/hr/postings/215421

The Diversity in Changing Environments Lab at NC State University (PI: Dr.
Will Petry) is hiring a temporary, full-time research technician to assist
with field research in Colorado from mid-June to early September 2025. This
position supports our ongoing study of plant demographic responses to
environmental variation in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Biological
Laboratory (RMBL).

We collected detailed climatic and demographic data—growth, survival,
reproduction, & germination—from several thousand permanently-marked
individuals near the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL; ca. 8
miles north of Crested Butte, Colorado). We use these long-term census data
along with experimental manipulations and environmental data to understand
the current patterns of population composition, to forecast the near-term
trajectories of populations, and to predict how environmental change will
redistribute this species across the landscape.

The selected technician will work in remote field sites across Gunnison
County, CO (elevations 6,200–12,500 ft) and aid in field data collection
for our study of plant demographic responses to environmental variation.
The position involves intensive data collection of plant demographic
variables from marked individuals in our study populations across Gunnison
County. Most work is conducted in the field, with a small amount of lab and
data management tasks.

*Key responsibilities:*

   - Field Data Collection – Record plant demographic data (growth,
survival, reproduction, germination) from permanently-marked individuals
   - Tagging and Mapping – Identify, tag, and map new study plants
   - Experimental Setup – Assist with seed germination experiments
   - Site Maintenance – Maintain plant tags, plot markers, and data loggers
   - Driving – Operate a field vehicle on mountain roads to access research
sites, including on mountain roads that may be narrow, slippery, windy, and
   unpaved
   - Data Management - Perform data digitization, entry, and organization

   - Physical Demands: Requires strenuous hiking to remote and isolated
study sites (up to 10 miles/day round-trip ), crouching, squatting, and
kneeling on uneven terrain. Hiking on steep trails while at elevations up
to 12,500 feet above sea level
   - Driving on rough roads and though most field sites are near roads,
several are a few miles away from the nearest road access
   - Weather Exposure: Work occurs in temperatures ranging from 40°F to
   >90°F, with high winds, sun exposure, and precipitation.
   - Remote Locations: Limited bathroom facilities and cell reception for
   long periods of the workday.
   - Solo Work: While most fieldwork is in pairs/groups, some independent
   work will be required.
   - Safety Measures: Training, personal protective equipment, first aid
kit, and emergency communicator will be provided.

Living Conditions:

   - Housing provided at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL).
   - Rustic accommodations include cabins, tents, yurts, and shared kitchen
   facilities.
   - Outhouses in lieu of indoor plumbing.
   - More details: *RMBL Housing Info*

This is a 12 week temporary job opportunity. Start date 06/16/2025
(flexible) with end date being 09/05/2025 (flexible). 40/hrs per week,
Monday-Friday (some weekend work may be needed to accommodate plant

Ecolog-L PhD scholarships Western Australia - Plant community completeness in ecological restoration

2025-03-03 Thread Erik Veneklaas (via ecolog-l list)
PhD scholarships in community ecology and functional ecology
Perth, Western Australia

We offer up to three PhD projects with full scholarships in the project
'Community completeness in monitoring of post-mining restoration success'. The
project is a collaboration between researchers from The University of Western
Australia, Murdoch University, University of Tartu, Estonia and University of
Camerino, Italy, as well as two mining industry partners - Iluka Resources Ltd
and Alcoa in Australia Ltd.

This collaborative research between ecologists, statisticians, computer
scientists and restoration practitioners will investigate why particular plant
species and plant functions are absent from post-mining vegetation, using the
ecological concepts of species pools, dark diversity, and community
completeness. The PhD projects will be tightly linked, and the successful PhD
candidates (and their supervisors) will be working as a team. We will use data
from vegetation characterised by contrasting community assembly processes,
including species-rich kwongan shrublands and Jarrah forests of Western
Australia, myall woodlands and Nullarbor scrub vegetation of South Australian
semi-deserts, and species-poor salt-marsh vegetation of South Africa.

Topics:

  * Dark-diversity and community completeness in natural and rehabilitated
vegetation, focusing on patterns of species pools and other taxon-based indices
in spatial-scaling and phylogenetic contexts
  * Dark-diversity and community completeness in natural and rehabilitated
vegetation, focusing on patterns of functional trait spaces pools and other
functional indices in spatial-scaling and trait-nature contexts
  * Theoretical aspects of community saturation and community completeness in
context of contrasting community-assembly scenarios (niche-focused assembly vs.
neutral community assembly), using real data sets and modelling approaches.

Eligibility
Honours or Masters of Science degree or equivalent qualifying for admission to
a PhD programme at the University of Western Australia or Murdoch University,
Perth, Western Australia. Suitable areas of study include Ecological Sciences
or Computer Science/Mathematics/Engineering (with strong programming and
mathematical skills).

How to apply
Please email an expression of interest including your CV and academic
transcripts to Erik Veneklaas (functional ecology; ecological restoration)
and/or Michael Renton (ecological and evolutionary modelling; applied
mathematics and statistics). Email addresses:
erik.venekl...@uwa.edu.au;
michael.ren...@uwa.edu.au .

Ecolog-L Online Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy, and Management

2025-03-03 Thread Papa, Chad
With a global focus, the Graduate Certificate in Forest Carbon Science, Policy,
and Management from Michigan State University is available completely online
and supplements a wide range of vocations. The Certificate equips participants
with the interdisciplinary tools and conceptual backgrounds to plan, implement,
manage, and evaluate forestry-based climate change mitigation projects.
Certification provides an edge in competing for opportunities in forest carbon
project development, REDD+ policy, and carbon offset investment advising for
corporations, governments, and non-governmental organizations.

Participants in the Certificate program learn the scientific foundations of
climate change and forest-climate interactions, how forest management affects
forest carbon balance, the ins and outs of forest carbon markets, the social
context of forest carbon sequestration, and the tools for measuring,
monitoring, and accounting for forest carbon - including satellite imagery,
remote sensing, and integrated carbon sequestration models.

The Graduate Certificate is open to a wide range of participants, including
recent graduates, those enrolled in an MS or PhD program, and lifelong
learners. The only requirement for admission is completion of a bachelor's
degree from an accredited four-year program. While a background in forestry,
natural resources, environmental sciences, or a related field is favorable,
resources will be made available to accommodate those with a limited scientific
background.

Learn more here:
https://www.canr.msu.edu/fccp/forest-carbon-graduate-certificate

To earn the Certificate, students must complete all of the following courses,
which are available online:

  * Human Dimensions of Forest Carbon Management (FOR 833)
  * Forest Carbon Policy, Economics, and Finance (FOR 835)
  * Measurement and Monitoring of Forest Carbon (FOR 837)
Each course is 3 credits. FOR 835 will be offered during Fall Semesters. FOR
833 and FOR 837 will be offered during spring semesters

Ecolog-L 2 MS positions in herpetological conservation (Sandmeier lab, Colorado State University-Pueblo)

2025-03-03 Thread fcsandmeier
Two MS-level graduate positions are available in my lab, starting either in the
summer or fall of 2025 in the Biology Department at Colorado State
University-Pueblo. For both positions, teaching assistantships ($10,000 per
year) are available but should be applied to by March 15, 2025. In addition,
$5,000 summer stipends for two years each are guaranteed, along with
possibilities to apply to university graduate funds for roughly $1,000-$2,000,
depending on annual availability. The two positions will focus on 1) collecting
and analyzing ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) habitat, ecology, and
current/historical occurrence in the southern part of Colorado and 2) analyzing
and describing characteristics and immunological mechanisms of phagocytic cells
in a captive population of Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii).

For full consideration, please apply with a letter of intent, CV, and
undergraduate transcript (unofficial is OK) by March 12. This will give us time
for an interview to apply officially to the program by March 15.

Please email me for more information (franziska.sandme...@csupueblo.edu
) and refer to my website
(https://sites.google.com/view/fran-sandmeier-lab/home
) and that of the MS
Program in Biology (https://www.csupueblo.edu/biology-ms/index.html
) for additional information.

If you miss the deadlines but remain interested in the program, please still
email me. We have rolling acceptance, but we usually have to assign teaching
assignments relatively far in advance of the next semester.
