[Dx-packages] [Bug 1308615] Re: unity dash not finding apps

2014-04-16 Thread Pawel Stolowski
Is this a new installation of entire system, or was user home directory
preserved?

In case this is reproducible, it would be useful to capture standard
output & standard error of unity-lens-applications, e.g. kill existing
process and start a new one from a terminal like this:

/usr/bin/unity-scope-loader applications/applications.scope
applications/scopes.scope commands.scope

But I realise it can be challenging if terminal cannot be launched... To
overcome that, app lens could be started from a text console, after
setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS environment variable to the one current
X session uses...

  unity dash not finding apps

After booting into the new desktop, I'm not able to search and find
  any apps.

In particular, I'm searching for "terminal", trying to launch a Gnome
Terminal. I'm offered The Terminator movie, for sale, but there's no
  terminal app returned.

In a separate issue, I search for Gimp, and I receive some not-safe-
  for-work results.

If I got that right, when it happens, you don't get results from
applications in Home and also from Application lens (Super+A)?

gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Lenses always-search
gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Lenses disabled-scopes

(run them in the terminal).

Bug description:
There's currently a trend of application developers to provide
multiple .desktops for their apps in order to get to different parts
of the app (for example private browsing in a web browser). One
possible way to fulfill that need without needing multiple .desktops
littered around would be to have popular search-based launchers also
search through quicklist items in a .desktop. In this way, power users
who need quick access to those other functions can have them without
littering menus or grids with extra icons.

It's also important to note that many apps already use Quicklist items
this way (as that's the designed use); adding the ability to search
them would be an improvement to everyone as it'd expose those
quicklist items via keyboard rather than requiring users to right-
  click on the launcher item.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1196051] Re: smart-scopes: Software center results do not show up in the home-scope

2013-10-16 Thread Pawel Stolowski
This is by design: apps in Home should only include installed apps.
"More suggestions" in Applications scope is the only place in the dash
where additional apps available from S-C should be listed.

While it would be relatively simple to display suggested apps in Home,
it would mean they would be mixed together with recently used
applications (since in Home results coming from a scope are merged and
collapse into single category).

unrelated to the category, and also appears to change each time the
  dash home is re-invoked.

For example "dash home" > "more apps" > "accessibility" this time around
shows, under "more apps availabe for download":
"magicicada" "mines" "mpong-gl" "camoso" (and two more not shown).

Seems those are all games? Not accessibility?

On my beefy machine (i7, 8G of rams), the preview for an application
takes 3/4s to show, you can't do anything meanwhile as there is no
button to launch the application (because you didn't double click,
just left click and thought "argh, I should have double click").

Because of this, we are making the 1st landing of 100 scopes
experience bad and we should fix it (at least, in that applicatoin
lens) by either preloading the software-center-dbus (/usr/share
/software-center/software-center-dbus) daemon (we can't have it always
running as it's taking over 100MB of memory) when hovering an app lens

This works fine from 13.04 (probably also in 12.10 but I cannot verify
this at the moment), we display top apps (as reported vy Software
Center) if the query is empty, otherwise only apps matching the query
and selected app categories. Please re-open the bug if you still see any
problem with it.

  Not a bug specifically, but...

It would be really nice if, when you hit Super and start typing the
name of an application you wish to open, Unity behaved more like
GNOME-Do. What I mean is that in Unity's current form, you have to
type the proper name of the application. Whereas in GNOME-Do, you can
just hit a few characters from it and it will find it for you. For
example, "Synaptic Package Manager". In Unity you have to start typing
  S Y N, but in GNOME-Do you could type S M or S P or S P M, etc and it
knows what you mean. The letters don't have to be adjacent to each
other in the name of the application for GNOME-Do, but they must be in
Unity. This would be a nice little feature to have, and would make
Unity that little bit more unifying.

  ---
Second description of same issue from dupe bug:

This could be seen as a wishlist, but in my opinion the current
  behavior is unexpected.

When using dash and starting writing the name of the application/file,
I expected the match being done with *all* the name of the
application, not just the *start*. I mean, if I type "dict", I expect
  to see both "Dictionary" and "StarDict". I notices this several time;
you often remember part of the name of the application and sometime it
is not the start of it.

Bug description:
  unity 3.6.6-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu Natty
  unity 3.6.8-0ubuntu3, Ubuntu Natty
  unity-2d 5.8.0-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu Pangolin

  Example 1:
  0. Be a 14-year-old girl, or a schoolteacher preparing to show a film to your
class, or a businessperson preparing to give a presentation.
  1. Click the Applications button.
  2. Type "movie" to launch Movie Player.
What happens: Seven applications appear, one of which is called "PornView".

  Example 2:
  0. Be a Dell representative or customer.
  1. Click the Applications button.
  2. Type "Dell" to find the Dell Recovery tool.
What happens: Five applications appear, including "Dopewars", a drug-dealing
game.

  (More examples in
  .)

This problem cannot reasonably be solved merely by renaming or
blacklisting one or two particular applications. These are just two
examples, and if the Dash shows any applications that aren't
installed, there is no bright line between those that should appear
for everyone and those that should appear for no-one.

We can't realistically expect the entire Ubuntu software library to be
offense-free: as more independent applications are published, some
(especially games) will be targeted at mature audiences and/or be non-
worksafe, and that's fine. (We can introduce a maturity rating system
inside Ubuntu Software Center for those.) But people should be able to
expect that the launcher in Ubuntu's shell, of all things, *will* be
  offense-free.

  Possible solutions:

  * Simplest would be to restrict application search results only to
those applications that are actually installed. As Mark Shuttleworth
  said in : "To
launch what you know you have installed, use the Dash. To explore what
may be installed, or may be available, use the Software Centre. Now,
neither piece may yet be ideal, but we should improve the design of
those pieces for their specific purposes, not try to make everything
  do everything."

  * Introduce a maturity ratings system
, apply it to every package in the Ubuntu archive
that needs it, then set a reasonable default for Dash searches
(analogous to Google's "SafeSearch Moderate"). This might involve
adding a setting for how much filtering the Dash should do.

  * Ad-hoc and unconfigurable blacklisting (as proposed in duplicate bug
883800). This might result in ongoing disagreements about whether
  particular applications should be blacklisted.

Bug description:
Metrics for preview actions (buttons in previews) are not collected
and sent to the Smart Scopes Server. While this was initially designed
and meant this way (only result activation and preview requests are
included in the metrics), it became a problem since Unity was changed
to display previews by default, and only activate items on double
click - the metrics are now not very useful, since they mostly just
show preview requests and few activations.

This needs to be fixed by counting any preview action as activation
for metrics purposes. This is crucial for improving relevancy and
  accuracy of Smart Scopes results.
