And by change tracking, what do you mean, exactly? If that's too broad a

I understand that you prefer to mention language codes in brackets (e.g.
"... [it]"), rather than writing only the language names, as it is
currently, and in Mozilla too. Note that a month ago, I mentioned that
there are already inline HTML comments, for developers, next to each
option, in the source code, intended for developers.

If we are to use this space for announcements, it's OK to have it on the 
homepage only.


But, as Ariel once wrote, we could also look into including the 
Bootstrap CSS framework to this aim, since it guarantees cross-browser 
compatibility, it leaves room for customization with plain CSS and it 
comes with a number of pre-defined styles, see for example 
http://getbootstrap.com/css/#helper-classes ; so we could have some 
common functionality out of the box.

By downloading and using the build scripts as described here --

you actually do produce the same results as the CMS does but in your local
environment. This is kind of mandatory if you change any files that effect
the CMS processing -- templates, etc.

I think maybe this part is not clear. I will make some modifications today
to help.

I like the fresh design of the download page.

So I assembled my suggestions with your proposal in the attached picture.

1. Because there are more than one versions of AOO to download, there is 
no version after "I want to download Apache OpenOffice". Instead


2. The new version alert is placed into the download box.

3. No destroy of the layout by the important message.

4. "Click here to see who it is" is now not necessary if there will be a 
hover "»" like in the other boxes.

Hm, I don't know where you got the screenshot from but on 
"www.openoffice.org" there is the most recent version shown.

See #1. Shouldn't be necessary. IMHO also too much text that the user 
has to visualize.

Does it really destroy the layout? Seems a question of taste. ;-) I 
tried to draw it through the complete page and not only above the menu 
but maybe it's better. What do the others think?

I don't understand what you want to reach with this. The user has to 
click on the link (however it is styled) to get, e.g., more information.


Furthermore, I see the big red exclamation mark. First I also thought 
about to show a little graphic. But then it would be always visible - 
also when the text is not negative. Then it wouldn't fit and maybe leads 
to confusion.

Thanks! I created msg_prop_l10n_it.js and used the new "boxed download" 
to repair http://www.openoffice.org/it/download/ that is now looking 
much nicer and far easier to maintain hopefully.



[Kay] I think the right side of the page -- the additional items should
be just be left intact as a block and let volunteers translate/change
this as they see fit rather than construct it with javascript.

This increases the complexity for the translators. For the colored boxes
they have to translate just a JS file that contains all strings. But for
the nav bar it's needed to translate the content directly in the HTML
file? Hm.


Here it is very good to have the different "boxes" available. For 
example, translators may want to use the right column for information 
about specific resources. In that case, they will hand-code that div 
instead of relying on the generated JavaScript. For the Italian download 
page we use custom links, and thus we build a custom div, no problem.

Work on Change-Tracking

Louis,

I ended my OASIS membership at renewal time in August 2013.

I have not submitted any of my current work to the ODF TC or the W3C 
change-tracking community group.  I occasionally glance at their lists and the 
JIRA, just to gauge what is going on.  That is all.  I will probably use the 
comment lists when my investigations uncover anything that might need repair in 
an errata.

In May, I was inspired to look into change-tracking anew when I saw the 
interest of the OSB Alliance at 
.
   

Although I had not been thinking about it much, I realized that it is indeed 
possible to accomplish what they want by relatively simple repairs to the 
current ODF 1.2 approach.  I had no interest in responding to the request for 
tender, however.  

I did start investigating ODF 1.2 tracked-changes, conducting tedious case 
analysis, and developing of a profile that could be used as an extension of 
what is already in ODF 1.2 and current implementations.  It may well be much 
easier to describe than to implement, and that remains to be resolved.  If 
there is to be implementation, it should be developed in Apache OpenOffice and 
thereby available to all other implementations in the openoffice.org lineage.

I am unfolding this on a set of web pages.  Currently, there is a bare 
skeleton, starting at  and the 
other content that is linked to there.  All of that work will be conducted in 
public and be available under Creative Commons Attribution license.  I don't 
expect there to be any code, although I foresee a suite of test documents that 
do not disturb current software while including the foreign attributes that 
support the repairing extensions.
 
Coincidentally, I have been encouraged to submit to a forthcoming workshop.  If 
my submission is accepted, there will be presentation of progress and a short 
paper in 3rd Quarter, 2014.

The work is just starting.  Here is an abstract:

Editing of word-processing documents at the presentation
level, with visible tracking of changes, operates at a 
different level of abstraction and granularity than
representation of the document in common document-file
formats. The consequent mismatches are demonstrated using
OpenDocument format provisions for tracked changes. A 
selection-copy analogy is introduced for bridging the 
abstraction levels while adhering to file-format provisions. 
The enhancements improve reliability and interoperability
and are implementable incrementally without obsoleting 
current software and documents.

to figure out how to accomplish in a reliable way:

instead of relying on the generated JavaScript. For the Italian download
page we use custom links, and thus we build a custom div, no problem.

the separate file (plus all the strings into the 
"msg_prop_l10n_.js") as separate functions.


Now you have the full freedom: Use it when it fits for the respective 
webpage or translate yourself. :-)

http://getbootstrap.com/css/#helper-classes ; so we could have some
common functionality out of the box.


Yes. However, any help from external CSS or JavaScript libraries needs 
some time to learn and is a thing for rainy weekends. I'll have a look 
as I see the advantages also for nice stylings that look the same in 
every browser.

Well sledgehammer changes aren't as bad as they used to be when we first
started out due to some upgrades by infra on all this. The short answer
is, if you need to do it, you do it, after verification in your local
sandbox of course. ;)

OK, I took a look at what you have going in /download/test and I think
this version  is pretty good. What you've done by isolating the box
creations is good if we want to enable them or not for certain sites.

So, I am going to use this later version to port to new /download areas
for the native language sites that don't have this structure...yet. then
we can call for volunteers to help with the rest of translation.

oh boy -- I just noticed that in download/test, in my browser the
explanatory items at the bottom on the green DL box are covered up. The
one that's currently in /download doesn't render this way.

And, well, I think for the sites that already HAD a /download area with
the old DL box before these changes, I will just use part of these new
changes to simplify things (the new green DL box). All of these old
sites  had everything translated en masse, and substituting message
strings on them is a lot to do. :/ I did need to change optionset names
to match the new ones to do this.
