Hi Adroaldo

Welcome to Apache OpenOffice. You can find general instructions under

It looks like you are a marketer, so it's probabily the best to join the
marketing mailing list of Apache OpenOffice. We are also at diverse
Social Media like Google+, Facebook, Twitter and Xing.

If you have questions, you can always ask. I wish you a nice start here.

Legacy (3.4.1 versions)

2013-07-25 Thread Rory O'Farrell

To answer a query on the en-Forum I have been searching for an archived version
of AOO 3.4.1 (Swedish). All the archived versions I find, of whatever
language, are of OOo 3.3 and earlier.

Perhaps I am just having a bad day (yes, from other aspects!), but if not, the
3.4.1 versions ought be made available in archives or legacy links.

The Install Guide covers installation on Linux -- but not
from a distro specific perspective. These instructions work
very well for some distros and not well for others. I can't
elaborate much more on that statement.

 http://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html

When we released 3.4., we found some additional installation
instructions which are included in the wiki version of the
Linux install page (which now also needs some slight
 updating):

nobody wants a trademark war, we simply want that it is taken careful
and don't underestimate the power of our brand.

I really would like to collaborate with the distros and also with
volunteers of LibreOffice.

The question is how wec an collaborate with LO best, the current
approach how they take stuff from AOO is damaging open source in
general. They can take it but the communication how they do it is key
here. And to be honest I have no respect for this but I also believe
that this is only driven by a smaller group of people and not the
broad LO community.

I hope they will see the benefit of closer collaboration in the future.

Linux distros will hopefully be more open if we can find maintainers
who are interested to help and improve our building and packaging
process. This is a minimal requirements to find the way back into the
distros. Maybe not all but the ones that are open and believe in open
source.

agree that is key for all further steps to fnd the way back in any
distro. We need people who are interested to help here in this area

Re: Some NL homepages that need updating for 4.0

2013-07-25 Thread Shenfeng Liu
I tried Chinese download page http://www.openoffice.org/zh-cn/download/ .
But it looks I can not simply replace the global parameter VERSION with
another parameter as "4.0.0"... :(
The design of the Chinese download page is similar to en download page. So
I just wondering what makes "4.0.0" appear in en download page?

For 3.4.x, people should be sent to
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/ooo/
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/
(if you publish it online, please post both links; it is possible that
the formed is merged with the latter in the next days).

It is good to tell people that, if they are looking for an older version
due to missing language support, it is often easy to help and get
OpenOffice 4 released in their language. All instructions at

http://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html
and we can make (or already have) snapshot builds available in
unreleased languages for volunteers who want to try them out.

I'm looking at bug https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122822
I have narrowed it down to
OK in r1384746
broken in r1388589

That was in Sept.2012, when we were in incubator.
I cannot get that range in https://fisheye6.atlassian.com

How can I get a list of commits, that happen between r1384746 and r1388589?

If you are using svn directly do
svn log -r 1388589:1384746
in your repository.

Or if were using git-svn you could use the wonderful gitk tool or its
relatives like qgit.

That isn't a problem caused by the GNU/Linux-distributionsor their
maintainers. It's caused by some LO-developers.

We have to find out the needs and necessities of the distros. And we
need people who are willing and able to package AOO in the distros' way.

There a not a lot of people in the world who are able and willing to do
that. AOO (and LibrOffice also) is really a beast of code.

Fonts not installed in Windows 4.0 binaries?

For the record, it seems that the fonts usually delivered by default (in
/share/fonts) is not in the Windows version. I do have it in my deb install on
Ubuntu.

I've filed a bug: https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122835

OT: Coverage of 4.0 Release

2013-07-25 Thread Rory O'Farrell
Something I am finding of great interest in the coverage of the AOO 4.0 release
is how reliant the commentators are on the various release documents. One
wonders if any of them actually use the programs they comment upon.

Thanks. And the wonderful thing is that AOO 4.0 is now getting

This is the advantage of writing innovative code, not just copying it.

Many of them are freelancers, paid by the word, not by the hour.
Using prepared materials, whether a press release or release notes,
makes their work easier and faster. So the first wave of articles
will be summaries or even copy&paste of our materials, with a little
bit of added commentary and analysis. This is expected.

Anyone who is serious about doing a real review of the product, it
will take them a few more days. We should see that eventually. But
right now it is about being first, reporting the news while it is
still new. Deeper analysis will come later.

I'm not talking about license issues either. I'm just saying that if
you are the originator of a feature then you get press coverage twice:
the 1st time when you initially release it and then a 2nd time when
another project copies it. We're seeing that now.

Personally, I think it is an advantage to get such press coverage.
Maybe you disagree. But since this is a thread about press coverage,
such observations are entire on topic.

A specific example, Ars Technica, on the LO 4.1 release:

I had OpenOffice 3. something and I just downloaded the 4.0.0. Whenever I
would open documents it would still open the 3 one. I got rid of the 3
thinking this would help but now my documents open in the Mac program Pages
which I don't want it to. Can you help me with having the newly downloaded
OpenOffice to be the main one?
Thank you,
Brianna

Hi Brianna

Have you seen the Release Notes?

Under Known issues there is a warning about Gatekeeper service in
MacOS Mountain Lion:

I hope this may help you, I'm not a MacOS user

RE: OpenOffice v.4.0.0 Lorem Ipsum extension glitch

2013-07-25 Thread Peyton Farquhar
Hi,

I'm attempting to use the Magenta Lorem Ipsum extension in OO v.4.0.0 on
Win XP SP, however, it does not work. The extension is clearly visible in
extension manager, and, I have removed/reinstalled/rebooted several times,
but the taskbar shortcut that enables generation of the dummy text that was
present in my previous version of OpenOffice 3.x is not in v.4.0.0. This
seems like a glitch that hasn't even been logged yet considering v.4.0.0 is
brand new. Also, I can't find any other references to the problem either
here or elsewhere.

Does anyone know where I can report the problem/have a resolution? I found
the creator's G+, but there is no way to contact him from either that page
or his website. I did email him directly at the email provided in the
extension at lodahl AT openoffice.org, but my msg was bounced back
evidently because the domain is no longer valid according to the rejection
msg. Hence the reason why I am directing this msg here.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
PF

Before any further discussion of this, we should have real examples
where running the equivalent of "yum install openoffice[.org]" or
"apt-get install openoffice[.org]" downloads something else.

Some distributions used "transitional" packages, but they have likely
been removed in recent releases in most cases. Let's get concrete
examples from recent distribution releases before continuing.

(and yes, I also think that if such cases still exist it will be
possible to solve them in a friendly way; and the "soffice" alias is a
separate problem)

In the two years since OpenOffice has been with Apache, in nearly every
case we have always had discussion on ANY change/commit in anything we
consider "source" that is not applied to a bug. So this excludes most of
the material on the web site with the exception of the new logo svgs. At
least that is my impression.

This is not really clear in our Orientation modules. And, I think in most
people's minds, knowing when to go from CTR to RTC is not particularly
clear either. There are some implicit assumptions -- like don't mess with
SNAPSHOT builds -- but I think it would be better if we stated this
explicitly.

I also suggest that any artifact we feel should be considered "source" --
like the new logo svg files -- be put, if not in /trunk, in an SVN area

New Features and Enhancements video

2013-07-25 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Well, I decided that I could go ahead and let DARPA-NET have another bite
at me today, rather then waiting for next week, so took a little walk into
town.

That and I wanted to cover the basic template first.

Here is an example of what I mean.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx7ZNEXlmR0IUWt5cnUxQ3JNbnM/edit?usp=sharing

There is an opening 8 seconds with the logo on a non-white background:
1 - is that acceptable
2 - is the ASF tag line acceptable

Then there is what would be the body of the piece - a full white
background, as this logo really doesn't work to well otherwise it seems to
me.
1 - I assume the logo is not an issue here, but thought I'd double check.
2 - I changed the ASF tagline to blue, as you can see
2a - I wonder if I may drop that (the ASF tagline) on the body frames,
leaving it on the opening and then bringing it back for the credits at the
end, as I will include sub-titles with this piece (in English) and that
space would be the place for these to display of course.

Anyway, that is enough for now and to get things started.

Ok - this time it will be a few days before I will be able to get back to
folks..

Thanks

You need to reset the file associations.
Right click (ctrl/click) on the document you wish to open.
Click on "Get Info"
In the dialogue window that opens, under "Open with:" select from the drop down menu
"OpenOffice.app".

Then click on the button "Change All..."

You will need to do this for all file types you wish to open with Apache
OpenOffice.
I assume you are trying to open .doc files since you can open them with Pages. If they are
files you created with OpenOffice, you should safe in the native .odt format.

that

It might be useful to think of this in terms of Review-Then-Commit
(RTC) versus Commit-Then-Review (CTR) rules. Once we clarify these
and when they apply, then we can discuss whether additional
technological means are needed to enforce this.

For the wiki the general rules is CTR for all users with an account.
No additional karma is needed.

The for resources in Subversion the general rule is CTR for all
commiters. Additionally, the public can submit patches, to the list,
attached to BZ issues, or using the CMS anonymous submission tool.
This then is effectively RTC since a committer must first reviews the
patch.

Those are the default postures, but there are exceptions. For
example, as we approach a Release Candidate we switch into RTC for the
trunk code. We only make changes after a bug has been proposed and
approved as a "release blocker" on the dev list.

So we could simply adopt a RTC for certain resources at certain times.
For example, Release Notes once a release occurs, are RTC. The
project logos, once approved and published, are RTC. If we agree to
such things there are lightweight ways of reminding ourselves. For
example, we could have a README file in directories that are RTC that
explain this. That should be enough for conscientious,
well-intentioned volunteers,

I am normally strong against limitations, but I would like to suggest

that

these items are moved to one (or more) subdirs, where the commit

right is

restricted e.x. to PMC members or even less. Doing so will not

prohibit

anybody from making their changes but simply avoid that the changes

are

product wide.

Personally I think this is a RTC versus CTR question. This
distinction is a tool that we don't invoke as often as we could.
Maybe that would be sufficient, at least in SVN.

Also, I think even a PMC member should be following CTR rules when it
is in effect. I don't think of a PMC member as a higher class of
committer in terms of what they have access to.

I think you misunderstood me. I agree with the RTC/CTR discussion, but
that does not prevent the accidential commit, I think it has happened

to

most of us, that we commit our changes, and we overlook that another

file

is also committed.

I disagree that we have a a problem with accidental overwrites in SVN
in cases where it is clear that RTC is in effect. I think the problem
is that it is not clear when CTR is in effect.

I don't think that it will help to prevent every error of this kind.

Also, I don't see how your solution helps with truly accidental
commits. Surely PMC members make errors as well?

Of course, as they are humans, too. ;-)

But you don't become a PMC member by default. You need to show some

things that you have understand how the page is turning. And then I doubt
that such error would happen.

So, I also think that we should do more than just turn the CTR into RTC

and expect that no mistakes will happen after that.

My 2 ct.

I think that there are a few things to think about.

We can all understand when RTC and CTR are in effect. These are different
in different systems.

There are some implicit assumptions -- like don't mess with
SNAPSHOT builds -- but I think it would be better if we stated this
explicitly.

I also suggest that any artifact we feel should be considered "source" --
like the new logo svg files -- be put, if not in /trunk, in an SVN area
that has some distinguishing name so that it is clear to committers this is
really a RTC area.

I like that idea. Something like /branding, a peer of /trunk and
/ooo-site. That can hold the branding related source. But we can
then also have specific bitmap versions checked into the website, for
direct use. But we keep the source versions separate.

+1, one for all.

Honestly, the sidebar is the perfect feature to have a similar behavior and a

NB: using MS Office (at work) with its ribbon for 3 years at least now and

After klicking on "... Update available" (German: "... Update

  (1) The prominent headline is "Announcing Apache OpenOffice 3.4"

  (2) There is no "prominent" link to "download AOO 4".

I think unexperienced users are disturbed and perhaps they don't know
how to go on.

Only after klicking on "Download" in the "menue bar" of this page with
"Produkte Download Support ..." there is the download link for AOO 4
"Windows (EXE) and Deutsch".

But furthermore I suggest to make the link for "all platforms,

Re: Extensions need approval?

2013-07-25 Thread Hagar Delest

I got a remark from the author: it seems that authors have to write to a mail
address to ask for approval, which he did. So was there a delay in the handling
of the queue in that mailbox or is there a problem with the mail address?
Don't take me wrong, it's not about criticism, it's just to make sure there has
not been any change that shut down that mail address!

It seems that a new version of the page related to the French dictionary
needs to be approved. Does it take a long time? (anti-spam measure?)

Correct, it happens only if the anti-spam is triggered for some reason
(e.g. links).

Current workaround is to go to the LibO site. The author took the time to
make an AOO page for his extension, it deserves a green light ASAP.

Done.

Roberto

Thanks
Hagar
