Hi, please note that you have written to several mailing lists,
dev@openoffice.apache.org is always enough.

I hence request you please remind Andrea to respond with the queries at
the earliest to enable us to install the software on our PC's and start
working with it at the earliest.

I will gladly answer your queries, and feel free to follow up with
private conversations if you prefer, but please remember that I don't
provide (gratis or paid) consultancy services around OpenOffice and
therefore there should be no expectations that I answer a message sent
on Saturday morning by Sunday night (or even by the next Saturday): it
might happen, but it might not. E-mailing a public channel, like you are
doing now, is best for generic support. Relying on professional
consultants is another option if you need tailored support.

Can you let me know when will Open
Office 4 be available for download ?

The latest plans were posted to this list and aim around June 2013.

* I had communicated to you a while ago about the security issue
related to these tools, can you throw light on it again. Mr
Tarnekar & his team may interact with you further before giving us
  a go ahead.

If I recall correctly from previous conversations on this list, you were
especially interested in disclosure of private data. I confirm that
services that connect to the Internet (such as the update notification
service) do not disclose personal private data or documents data.

And for software vulnerabilities, the project follows the standard best
practices (private reporting, confidential fixes, CVEs, fixes in the
first available release or a dedicated point release): but this part is
so confidential that I don't have access to it, so if you need more
information on this keep asking the dev@openoffice.apache.org list and
if there is anything that can be disclosed the relevant people will do it.

* Are there any licensing issues when Open Office tools are used at
the whole enterprise level rather than used individually.

The license makes no difference. Check for yourself at
http://www.openoffice.org/license.html

* Can you provide us a feature comparison table of the latest Open
Office suite tools with respect to the Microsoft Office tools (Ex
  Pivot table functionality in Calc).

This highly depends on your usage of Office and OpenOffice. It is often
said that users use about 20% of the Office (or OpenOffice)
functionality, but that 20% is different for each use case, so
compatibility in general is good (and yes, Calc supports Pivot tables
and related functionality) but details may vary depending on your
specific use case. This is one of the fields where a professional
consultant might be helpful.

* Can you provide us with any known compatibility issues between
open office tools & Microsoft office tools. (Ex Open Office Write
file opening in MS Word & vice versa for editing/manipulating).

This is mostly the same issue, but in this case we maintain a list of
fidelity improvements that you can find at

http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Fidelity_Improvement_Since_AOO341
and shows that we are continuously working towards better interoperability.

  Andrea.

Rob,

  Thanks for your help.

When searching defects I found that in the fixed bug list some of them
have no code change, in onther word, it was fixed indirectly, so should
we distinguish fixed bugs by "With code change" and "Without code change".
IMHO, "With code change" means our developer actually did some programming
work to fix certain bug, it reflect their archievment.

Fwd: [MediaWiki-announce] MediaWiki security release: 1.20.3 and 1.19.4

2013-03-04 Thread janI
Hi.

As you can read below, mediawiki has just released a security release.

We are currently not hit by the issues noted in the mail.

However I would like to ask the community if we should upgrade or wait for
a later release ?

if we upgrade, we have to test all extensions again.

To: mediawiki-annou...@lists.wikimedia.org, Wikimedia developers <
wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org>

I would like to announce the release of MediaWiki 1.20.3 and 1.19.4.
These releases fix 3 security related bugs that could affect users of
MediaWiki. Download links are given at the end of this email.

* By default, the curl library passed 'true' to CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST
when establishing an SSL connection, instead of '2'.

* MediaWiki developer Krenair discovered that the full user object,
including password hash, could be returned when unblocking a user by
the API. Exploitation of this vulnerability requires the user to have
permissions to unblock users, by default this is limited to users in
the sysop group.

* MediaWiki developer Platonides discovered that the maintenance
script mwdoc-filter.php did not check if it was being run via the CLI,
and could allow an attacker to read arbitrary files if PHP's
register_globals was enabled and the .htaccess file in the maintenance
directory, which by default denies access for all users, was disabled.

Security issues are one of the few cases where we prefer that all
conversations happen in private (infrastructure-private, that you CCed,
seems right).

I realize that we are not affected by the vulnerabilities, so discussing
this in public wouldn't pose risks in this case, but still with all
security releases the project will simply take Infra's advice.

And thank you for following Mediawiki's security announcements!

Vote now for 2013 Readers Choice Awards (About.com)

2013-03-04 Thread Rob Weir
We've received four nominations in About.com's 2013 Readers Choice
Awards. In the category of Office Software we've been nominated for:

-- Your Favorite Office Suite for Windows
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-your-favorite-office-suite-for-windows.htm

-- Your Favorite Business Software Solution
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-your-favorite-business-software-solution.htm

-- Your Favorite Site for Office Software Templates

-- Your Favorite Office Software Company for Social Responsibility
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-on-your-favorite-office-software-company-readers-choice-awards-2013.htm

For that last one the nominee is "Apache Foundation".

Now comes the voting, which lasts until March 19th. You can vote once
per day, in each category.

The website says, "Please also feel free to spread the word to your
community!", so I suggest we do exactly that and show that not only do
we have great software, but we also have a great community as well.

As they say in Chicago, "vote early and often"

OK. But then maybe let's agree on a date, and if the Pootle service
is not able to handle non-committer users by then, then we go forward
with backup plan for using POEdit and offline translation. It is
better than nothing, and we know it works. But I don't want to see us
in a situation when it is May and we're still waiting for Pootle.

Adabase...

2013-03-04 Thread Kay Schenk
It seems we have a fair amount of code devoted to dealing with AdaBase.
And, it seems, this used to ship with OpenOffice (well Star Office
actually). I can't find a lot of activity surrounding this lately.

Can someone enlighten the rest of us about this?

With Rob's recent start (wiki page(s)) about Strategic Planning, I thought
I'd do some investigation about Base specifically.

Thanks.

It´s ADABAS, not Adabase.

And what is wrong with supporting a third party database?.

Adabas community edition (90 day trial) continues to be available for download.

OK, there is NOTHING wrong with supporting a third party product. We
currently supply standard, generic connectivity in the form of jdbc and
odbc. These options will accommodate MANY databases. And, we also supply
some "native" connectivity options (another area I think needs further
investigative by the way).

So, my initial question still stands -- what is this code used for? Is this
the only way ADABAS users can use OpenOffice? Should whatever connectivity
this provides be offloaded to an extension instead, for example. Or, is
this just an historic holdover that doesn't serve a core purpose at the
moment.

To the point: I agree with Andrea: it would have been good if you had
been more conservative and discussed the security implications
privately. That's because of the a small chance that your assessment
that the announced issue does not affect ooo-wiki2-vm will turn out to
be a false negative: if somebody replies to your post and says "Hey,
false negative", you really want _that_ to happen privately.

I propose to start merging and updating the User FAQ's from the website
into the current structure on the mediawiki (mwiki) and updating the
FAQ's already there by eliminating outdated references to version 1 and
version 2 and any duplications.

If there are no objections in 72 hours I will start merging the entries
from the website into the mwiki.

Good day all;

Just a quick update to where this mini-project is. I have jut about
finished all the modifications to the faqtoc on the mwiki. This is being
done through a copy of the template file so as to avoid multiple saves
to the template bringing the mwiki to its knees. Once the copy is
finalized the changes will be made to the actual template file and saved
once. Though tj has told me there should be no major performance hit by
doing this I will schedule it probably over a weekend when usage is
lower to (hopefully) minimize the hurt when Murphy inevitably bites.

I came across the following page http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/FAQ
that appears to be a sandbox that was started for developer FAQ's and
then abandoned. There has been no development activity on it since 2009.
Since many of the faq's on the web site are aimed towards developers, I
would like to use this page as an index page for a number of different
categories of developer faq's. I someone with a better knowledge and
background in development could take a look at the page and if there is
anything worth keeping let me know.

Regards
Keith

Evening All;

I wanted to get back to this. Due to a change in my daughter's schedule
my time was cut that I could spend on this as I babysit my 2 year old
granddaughter. Also medical issues with both myself and my significant
other have been sneaking in.

Work has not stopped, but it has slowed more than I had hoped. The
design work of adding new categories and hierarchy are done and work is
progressing slowly on the culling and rewording. I will be spending more
time on this in the next few weeks to try and get it moving quicker
again. Hopefully in the next few days redirect can be set on the some of
the categories on the web site to the wiki.

Regards
Keith

First, you have to add the shape to the draw page.

Four?? There's **FIVE**.
The 5th category should be: "Top Notch, Highly-Skilled, Dedicated Team of
Volunteers."

The Apache Team of Developers will win that one, hands down! Not only do
they "Get 'er done" but they do it with real class when responding to
mundane and inane but sincere questions & comments without "putting down"
the users making comments or asking for advice. They manage to handle them
all with clarity & charity and (bless 'em) real help.

Subject: Vote now for 2013 Readers Choice Awards (About.com)

We've received four nominations in About.com's 2013 Readers Choice Awards.
In the category of Office Software we've been nominated for:

-- Your Favorite Office Suite for Windows
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-your-favorite-office-suite-for-win
dows.htm

-- Your Favorite Business Software Solution
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-your-favorite-business-software-so
lution.htm

-- Your Favorite Site for Office Software Templates
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-your-favorite-site-for-office-soft
ware-templates.htm

-- Your Favorite Office Software Company for Social Responsibility
http://office.about.com/b/2013/02/19/vote-on-your-favorite-office-software-c
ompany-readers-choice-awards-2013.htm

For that last one the nominee is "Apache Foundation".

Now comes the voting, which lasts until March 19th. You can vote once per
day, in each category.

The website says, "Please also feel free to spread the word to your
community!", so I suggest we do exactly that and show that not only do we
have great software, but we also have a great community as well.

As they say in Chicago, "vote early and often"

Project planning

Hi,

after reading Rob's post on website strategic planning I went to
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Project+Planning

It still refers to graduating out of incubation.

Not sure how to fix that or what it should be changed too. Simply
remove the Graduate row?

That was my concern too. Jan is perfectly right that he merely forwarded
a public security announcements, and that there is absolutely nothing
wrong in this in itself, but it's better to avoid the (admittedly
remote, in this case) possibility that someone exposes a security risk
while commenting. Take this as a generic practice; we had similar
discussions about vulnerabilities found in libraries, for example; and
the common advice is not to discuss security-related practices in public.
