How to stop back end Agents

Is there a way to stop selective agents which are running in
the back end in the management server?

RE: DB timeouts on failover

2014-01-26 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi Francois,

In current Cloud Stack versions there is no way to tell management servers that
wait/reconnect for some time without fencing the management server if it sees a
Db Connection failure.

Also the default connection-timeout parameters for a mysql database is lying
with mysql configuration file my.cnf in which we can use the following property
to set the default connection timeout.

"connect-timeout=seconds"

The default value is 10 seconds for this property.

PS : We are coming with a proper Database HA in 4.3, where we are using Mysql
Connector's parameters to achieve this.

Thanks & Regards

[PROPOSAL] Windowsfication Of ACS

2014-02-14 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi,

The current ACS management server runs only on linux based operating systems.
Though it runs on windows under Cygwin terminal with some effort, I'd like to
introduce this feature to make sure that the management server runs on windows
without any dependencies on Cygwin etc.

The Jira Ticket : https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-6105

Feedback/comments are welcome.

Subject: RE: [PROPOSAL] Windowsfication Of ACS

Below are my findings and suggestions.

Dependencies for mgmt server to run on windows.

1.ssh-keygen tool ( default available on linux. Its required to
generate id_rsa_cloud keys)

2.mount cmd ( this is used by vmware/hyperv to mount sec storage on
mgmt server to copy the systemvm.iso to copy to Hosts)

3.injectkeys.sh ( this is binary file executes on mgmt server to
inject the dynamically generated sshkeys to systemvm.iso. its bash file)

4.there is some code part in mgmt. server where "sudo" cmd is uses
to execute the bash files. We have to rewrite those parts to handle it for
windows.

5.Mkisofs this is used to generate the systemvm.iso

My thought for the dependencies

1.we can generate ssh-keygen binary from c source or use the putty
keygen utility to generate the keys.
[Damoder] I also looked into it and found only putty utility as useful one for
now assuming that keys will be available already. Probably will think on it
once POC is done.

2.Mount ( we have to rewrite the code in mgmt. server to handle how
to copy in nfs or cifs remote path by referencing them locally)
[Damoder] We are thinking to use Samba integration here

3.For injectkeys.sh We have to write a new to bat file /python
which will do the similar job.
[Damoder] We have written a python script for this. This is in testing mode
right now.

4.There is already windows binary mkisofs is available we can use
it.
[Damoder] Windows binary of mkisofs is working fine.

Thanks

Rajesh Battala

For DB HA we have included a new class StaticStrategy.java which is having
compile time dependency on mysql -connector-java.
I will make change in pom, as provided scope dependency instead of compile time
so that maven will not include in the bundle while packaging.

Initially I thought my change caused to bundle the mysql-connector-java into
RPM in 4.3... but after did more analysis I found that mysql-connector is
already getting bundled into RPM in 4.2.x as well.

Looks like issue is something else as well.. I am not sure this will fix the
actual issue.

Anyhow we need to apply this patch even after fixing the actual issue.

RE: developers and mysql

2014-02-26 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi Alex,

The mysql dependency is on for only " StaticStrategy.java" as mentioned
by you. And this is not used anywhere in the code base as a compile time
dependency rather used as a run time dependency in db.properties. this will be
passed to mysql driver as part of mysql Database URL construction.

This StaticStrategy.java will become mute if we move out of mysql driver as it
has only runtime dependency.

@Hugo

The mysql scripts is a legacy of we used to dump the mysql db to create the
create-schema sql but it is at worst still a runtime dependency. We should fix
it but I don't think it's as high a priority as the compile time dependency
that has been introduced.

@Damoder,

Can you take a look at StaticStrategy.java? This is the only file that
requires mysql but I couldn't find anywhere in the code that references this
class. I then looked at the bug and wiki and it also doesn't mentioned that
dependency on mysql has been added. It doesn't make sense for CloudStack to
include this automatically. There are many ways to provide DB HA and
incorporate it into our code just limits the possibilities. We can for example
document this as a way to do it in on the wiki for example but I just don't see
why we would use code to limit it.

Thanks.

Subject: Re: 4.4 Feature Freeze

i'm all for being flexible, but i find a lot of the arguments used here
debatable.

"It causes developers to rush their development to meet the deadline." This
will happen anyway, every time we've extended the deadline we got new features
coming in at the last minute. Actually i'm under the impression that when we
move the deadline people will actually try to get more features in instead of
working on stabilizing existing features.

"We can't deliver features on the roadmap." There is validity to this point,
but on the other hand we already know the entire release schedule way ahead,
this feature freeze date should not come as a surprise. But as i mentioned in
an earlier mail, lets have this discussion. Post which features might not make
it into the release so we can have a discussion if we should slip the release
date to get this feature in. I think we all now that there are commercial
parties working with this software to build releases and have customers
demanding features, but if we don't discuss that on list it's hard for us to
take it into account.

"Feature freeze wasn't called" True, i wasn't even aware that this was a
requirement. We should add this to the procedure here
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Releases so release
managers know this is expected of them. It should not impact the dates as the
dates are already fixed by the release schedule (every 4 months)

I'm still -1 on extending the feature freeze. I would rather extend the
test/stability phase to we have some more time to fix issues before we get into
the RC spinning.

This is the list of current features targeted for 4.4 according to our Jira.
Which features would be impacted if we don't move the feature freeze?

RE: [VOTE] Apache CloudStack 4.3.0 (seventh round)

2014-03-11 Thread Damoder Reddy
Can we use project version in the plugins/database/mysql-ha/pom.xml instead of
hard coding of the version in plugins. I have seen same issues even in other
plugin poms as well.

Also in this pom.xml the relative path of the parent pom is wrong. It should be
"../../pom.xml" instead of "../pom.xml".

Thanks & Regards

[Animesh] Ok this came in from Hugo's commit that I cherry-picked
https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=cloudstack.git;a=commitdiff;h=472a387d2d828e21aff93a750ed3e178837a1879

from file plugins/database/mysql-ha/pom.xml This is a version issue which can
be fixed but should not affect functioning. Lets hear from Hugo on this.

The other errors are formatting issues caught by checkstyle plugin that can be
ignored. The Jenkins build is successful.

Hey Paul,

Just to be clear, this problem only occurs during the noredist build right?

Mysql HA is one of the noredist features, so it should not be present in the
regular build.

I'm checking the poms now to see if everything is configured correctly.

Cheers,

Hugo

RE: [4.4] mysql-ha POM error

2014-03-27 Thread Damoder Reddy
Paul,

We have seen this issue while doing maven build on Red Hat Linux 6.2 and Fedora
.. this was due to the wrong relative path in plugins/database/mysql-ha/pom.xml
as mentioned by you.

This got fixed in the commit mentioned by Ilya
(https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=cloudstack.git;a=commit;h=15b6860c68125ea73f113cc9b41c10a67d661088
 ).
But I think this is not cherry-picked to 4.4. Looks like 4.4 branch created
before this commit.

The 4.3 branch has the fix.

Somebody who has commit writes need to cherry pick this to 4.4 branch.

Thanks & Regards

[PROPOSAL][Merge] Windowsfication of management server

2014-03-27 Thread Damoder Reddy

Can Windowsfication be cherry-picked to 4.4 from master ? It is now well

earlier.

RE: [PROPOSAL][Merge] Windowsfication of management server

2014-03-28 Thread Damoder Reddy
There are no major existing code level changes in this feature except one
File(com.cloud.server .ConfigurationServerImpl). For this also we have written
test cases to verify.

Remaining all are new files added which are specific to Windows.

quality is the only norm, Abhi. Can we make this of high enough quality as to
not introduce bugs in other parts of the system or to hold back the next
release as much as we did this one? The alternative, as I so boldly stated in
my earlier mail is introducing the notion of experimental features. This is not
perse about this feature or the parts of it we can get in without degrading the
rest of the system.

[PROPOSAL] Maven integration for windowsfication

2014-04-02 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi,

All of you may know we are using Wix Installer to create Windows MSI package
for cloud stack. I am trying to integrate Wix tool with maven build process. I
found the following 2 plugins for the same.

We are using the following commands from wix tool set.

1. Heat - To harvest a directory

2. Candle - to compile the xmls and create obj files

3. Light - to create msi package

http://incubator.apache.org/npanday/docs/1.2/plugins/wix-maven-plugin/
https://bitbucket.org/joxley/wix-maven-plugin

The later one is extension of the first one.

Both the plugins support the following goals as of now

1. Candle

2. Light

We are missing "heat" goal in the above plugins, which is needed for our
packaging.

I am thinking to write our own plugin to support this "heat" goal by extending
the second plugin above.

Is it ok to write our own plugins for this?
If yes then where should we put this plugin's code in the code base. I mean
which module this should go in(Can we put this code in cloud stack code base at
all)?

RE: [ACS 4.4][QA] Windowsfication of management server

2014-04-08 Thread Damoder Reddy
g and documentation.

Documentation:
If we want to ship this with 4.4 and announce that CS now runs on windows we
need to have the installation manual covered at least.

Packaging:
We can't expect our users to build it themselves on windows. So we need some
kind of packaging that people can install on their windows server.

Testing:
We need to automagically verify that these changes aren't affected by future
changes. I would expect to see the packaging and functional tests on starting
and stopping CS on a windows host as part of the automated test procedure. I'd
be happy to work with you to set it up on Jenkins.

If we can fix these items before the bug fix phase i'd be +1 to include this in
the 4.4 release, but of course this is depending on the consensus in the
community. I'm just the RM, not the guy who decides what goes into a release.

Cheers,

H Damoder, I'd say create your own project on github (or fin a suitable apache
project to donate to) and add the plugin there. Then load it in the build
process for cloudstack. You can also start by putting it in the project but in
the long run it will be out of place.

[PROPOSAL] Add getPathSeparator() to DataStoreTO.java

2014-05-13 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi,

While working on windowsfication of management server, I found the issues when
creating a template from a ROOT disk snapshot.
It is not able to create template out of that snapshot due to the snapshot path
we are constructing before creating template is using "File.Separator" and on
windows it would be "\" instead of "/". Due to this the template creation is
failing from snapshot when management server is running on windows.

Code snippet example is

String snapshotInstallPath = snapshot.getPath();
    int index = snapshotInstallPath.lastIndexOf(File.separator);
    String snapshotName = snapshotInstallPath.substring(index + 1);

    if (!snapshotName.startsWith("VHD-") &&
!snapshotName.endsWith(".vhd")) {
    snapshotInstallPath = snapshotInstallPath + ".vhd";
    }
    URI snapshotURI = new URI(secondaryStorageUrl + File.separator +
snapshotInstallPath);
    String snapshotPath = snapshotURI.getHost() + ":" +
snapshotURI.getPath();

To fix this problem I am proposing the following solution.

The path separator is specific to the file system(NFS, samba etc..) we are
using as a secondary storage on SSVM. Instead of using File.separator in the
path, we can add a method say "getPathSeparator()" to
"DataStoreTO.java" which is implemented by several file systems. And we will
replace "File.separator" with the above method call at all respective places.

Anybody see any problems or any other better approach can think of here?

Is this the only place we need to do changes or any other places also changes
are required to achieve this?

Thanks & Regards

Hi All,

The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache CloudStack has asked Santhosh
Edukulla to become a committer and we are pleased to announce that he has
accepted.

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more autonomously. For
developers, it makes it easier to submit changes and eliminates the need to
have contributions reviewed via the patch submission process. Whether
contributions are development-related or otherwise, it is a recognition of a
contributor's participation in the project and commitment to the project and
the Apache Way.

Please join me in congratulating Santhosh!

Is that sufficient to make it nonoss or still we need to move it under nonoss

2014-07-08 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hugo,

As Rajani mentioned we are not packaging the sources with MSI installer, we
are telling to installer from where to download the dependencies.

Anyhow my question is, the MSI build is already part of separate build profile
("buildw") which is not build with default profile. So still we need to move it
to under noredist profile?

Hi Hugo,
Even in case of windows installer, mysql-connector-java is mentioned in a
[spec] file. only difference being, it also mentions the download url as
windows doesn’t have a package repository and doesn’t know where to download
from.
It will not be part of the installer. The msi only tells where to download the
mysql connector jar from. It doesn’t include the jar itself.

When the user is installing cloudstack using the msi, the jar will be
downloaded from the location mentioned.

Rajani,

That is why we renamed nonoss to noredist. It has to do with the policy of the
Apache Software Foundation regarding compatible licenses [1]. The problem in
this case is subtle, but there is a difference. The main point in the
discussion is so-called system dependencies. We know we need java, mysql and
the mysql-connector-java to be installed before we can install our packages.
This is what the dependency on mysql-connector-java in the spec file indicates.
Creating a package containing those source is actually including the items we
consider is going just a bit further and to a point where we concluded that it
is not inline with the apache policies. So it is perfectly alright to include a
popup in the installer that tells the users that he needs to install mysql,
java etc, but we can’t have an installed in the source that will do that for
the user as part of the installer.

What David proposes is a the middle ground where we can keep the installer in
the configured like this in the pom, but it can’t be in that standard build,
but only in the build that know we can’t redistribute (the noredist build). We
will never make the artifacts resulting from that build available, but other
entities can make them available. By specifying noredist on the build command
we can be reasonably sure that the builder has been informed that distribution
restrictions might apply on whatever it is he is doing.

Cheers,

Hugo

This one is just a helper to create a windows installer. It chose to use a mvn
command to create the installer instead of shell/bat script. It should work
with either nonoss or oss modules.
This is very similar to cloud.spec[1] we have which is used to create the rpm
and which already has mysql-connector-java already listed as required package.

I think the right way would be to create independent git repos for
deb/rpm/windows installers/packages.

In its current state, I don’t see it any different from other helper installer
scripts we already have.

2014-07-17 Thread Damoder Reddy
Hi all,

I am thinking to add a plugin which enables to check the password strength of a
user while setting/resetting the password for that user.
why as a plugin because different companies may have a different rule sets to

The default implementation will have the password strength calculation based on
the following parameters
1. Length of the password
2. Number of Character Sets involved in the password defined. For ex, Upper
Case Letter, Lower Case letter, Digits and special character set.

Ay suggestions/Comments?

For the first part I am planning to add parameters to global settings.

But for the 2nd part I think it depends on where we are integrating this plugin.

To start with I will integrate it with abstract layer of Authenticator
implementations and we can override in the corresponding authenticator on need
basis.

 2. http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/changelog.html)

Thanks
