[Bug 370541] Re: Jaunty's GDM Autologin doesn't work anymore

2009-05-11 Thread Paul
I've tried to search for the exact command i've made, copied from the
internet. Maybe was it "sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults 13 01" instead of
"sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults", i did this cause i've been trying to
remove gdm but i've seen that a lot of gnome functions were not
avaliable without it, so i needed to reactivate it.

Otherwise, i'm sorry but i can't help you anymore, cause i haven't got
this problem anymore...

But i follow this thread !

See ya

[Bug 256749] Re: Unable to mount location -- Internal error: No mount object for mounted volume

2009-06-01 Thread Paul

Hi everyone,

As I cannot upgrade to Ubuntu Jaunty (common & horrible ATI legacy
videocard Linux Support issue), I can confirm that the following
solution works for those who use Ubuntu 8.10 (or Linux Mint 6 (Felicia)
in my case).

(This fix was already suggested by Cecond Power in the post above)

1. Install the ntfs-config package through the Package Manager or your Terminal.
2. Make sure the problematic drives are unmounted (e.g. by rebooting).
3. Start the NTFS configuration tool found under 'administration' or 'settings'
in your start menu.
4. Make sure the drives are selected in the tool and press ok. (and then ok
again in the next screen).
5. Restart Linux and now the drives should mount automatically without issues.

It is only a workaround but it gets things fixed. And it is an easy fix
for those with little experience with Linux (like myself).

[Bug 423106] [NEW] gnome sound recorder ogg format static clicks in ubuntu 9.04

2009-09-02 Thread paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

gnome sound recorder appears to record in ogg format but on immediate
playback [without saving it to a file first] I hear mainly clicking
sounds and very very brief snippets [less than 10%] of what should have
been recorded and that was barely audible. Also during the record I
noticed the level to be lower on the meter than while recording with the
other 3 formats listed below. I also found first saving the ogg format
recording to a file and then playing it produced the same malformed
result and playing it in vlc sounded the same. Another oddity is that
once I used the ogg format and then any other recording format I tried
in the same record window also behaved the same with garbled play back,
however if I opened a new window and used any of the other three formats
[flac, wav, spx] they again worked fine.

recording in flac, wav and spx worked fine. This is on a T43p notebook
with ubuntu 9.04 installed.

I also download an ogg file online and asked gnome sound recorder to
play it and that played fine.

I confirm that bug as well. Happened since I upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04
and also the workaround with "apparmour" does not work. Even when I stop
the apparmor service and then start evince in a terminal, I get these
messages ...

[Bug 1979037] Re: Monitor numbers are almost invisible in an Ubuntu/Yaru session

2022-06-21 Thread Paul
Upstream changed the style of those OSD between GS 42 and 42.1 (see:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/2277).

We updated Yaru in the master branch to follow these changes (see:
https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru/pull/3627).
But it hasn't been uploaded yet to Ubuntu 22.04.

[Bug 1800749] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 doesn't like fullscreen mode for sauerbraten(game)

2019-07-22 Thread Paul
The bug started Ubuntu 18.10 and continues in 19.04 with all updates
applied as of the date of this comment. Again, it seems like the Ubuntu
Desktop, as of 18.10, is continuously(once a second) hijacking the mouse
and keyboard from Sauerbraten when running in full-screen mode. Thanks.

[Bug 1800749] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 doesn't like fullscreen mode for sauerbraten(game)

I'm not sure if it's related, but graphic games under dosbox, such as
Scorched Earth, fail to capture the mouse in Ubuntu 18.10. They work
fine(mouse is captured/functional) in Ubuntu 18.04*.

[Bug 1800749] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 doesn't like fullscreen mode for sauerbraten(game)

2018-11-10 Thread Paul
A little more info:

_As soon as_ you switch sauerbraten(multiverse package) to
fullscreen(Step 3, above) in Ubuntu 18.10, the system mouse pointer
starts the flickering in the middle of the screen(about once a second).
While moving the _game_ mouse pointer around, like in circles, the
system mouse pointer ceases to flicker/interrupt the game. Once you
stop moving the game mouse pointer around, the flickering of the system
mouse pointer returns.

[Bug 1800749] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 doesn't like fullscreen mode for sauerbraten(game)

2018-11-18 Thread Paul
It appears that the xinput devices(keyboard/mouse) are being hijacked by
desktop? As long as there is user input(keyboard/mouse activity) at
least once second within Sauerbraten, everything works as expected in
Ubuntu 18.10. Further bug info: I noticed that if you're moving forward
with the 'w' key(with no mouse activity), and jump(press 'spacebar')
while keeping the 'w' key pressed, the bug returns about a second later.
The forward movement stops and the rogue mouse pointer returns to
flickering, as if there is no user activity, or as if the user input
activity has been cleared/reset. ***If you _don't_ jump while moving
forward, the forward movement continues as expected and the rogue mouse
pointer stays away. When there is no user input/activity for about 1
second, the flickering mouse pointer returns. Again, everything works
as expected in Ubuntu 18.04. Thanks!

PS. Sorting straces of Sauerbraten seem show a similar number of epoll
calls as flickers of the rogue mouse pointer, but that was a hack at
trouble-shooting and may be unrelated. Thank again!

[Bug 1800749] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 doesn't like fullscreen mode for sauerbraten(game)

2018-11-18 Thread Paul
Correction: not _epoll_, but _poll_. Again, it was a hack at trouble-
shooting and may be unrelated.

Sorted Sauerbraten strace log snip:
---
 11 poll([{fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 1, -1)= 1 ([{fd=7, revents=POLLIN}])
 11 poll([{fd=7, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=7,
revents=POLLOUT}])
 11 poll([{fd=8, events=POLLIN}], 1, -1)= 1 ([{fd=8, revents=POLLIN}])
 11 poll([{fd=8, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=8,
revents=POLLOUT}])
---

Generated by stracing sauerbraten in fullscreen mode, counting 10 rogue
mouse pointer flickers, and exiting game.

[Bug 1723368] [NEW] terminal window shrinks by 1 column and 1 row each time it is unmaximised

2017-10-13 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Maximise a gnome-terminal window, then unmaximise it. Each time it is
unmaximised, it shrinks in size by one column and one row.

I suspected this was because the scroll bar incorrectly extends 1 pixel
beyond the right and bottom edges of the window, however the bug is
still present with the Show scrollbar option disabled. Other
applications (xterm, Thunderbird, etc.) are not affected.

[Bug 1288655] Re: terminal gets smaller when maximized and then restored

2017-10-20 Thread Paul
Literally one pixel beyond the edges of the window. I've attached a
screenshot that I hope illustrates this.

You see two windows which were auto-placed by the window manager. If
they didn't have scroll bars, they wouldn't overlap, but they do, by one
pixel. Depending on which window is in the foreground, the rightmost
pixel of the scroll bar is either below or above the other window.

The bottommost pixel of the scroll bar extending below the window is
evident in both cases.

2017-10-29 Thread Paul
I've not had one of these crashes since removing Global App Menu. Anyone
else got it installed?

** Summary changed:

[Bug 1729743] Re: gnome-shell leaks memory (> 1 GiB), becomes janky

2017-11-02 Thread Paul
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1672297 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1672297

Ironically, I'm the one who originally filed that bug ... but the
problem had seemed to go away, only to return after the upgrade to
17.10.

What's your preferred profiler for this kind of bug, and can it be
attached to a running process?

[Bug 1729743] [NEW] gnome-shell leaks memory (> 1 GiB), becomes janky

2017-11-02 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

After 19 days, gnome-shell has 1.1 GiB of memory resident, and tasks
such as switching between workspaces are noticeably janky compared to
the buttery smoothness immediately after a fresh login.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Paul
Tried to get a Massif profile, starting a new gnome-shell with
--replace, but it fails before it can replace the running process due to
bug #1700465:

$ valgrind --tool=massif --num-callers=32 --log-file=/tmp/gnome-
shell.valgrind.log gnome-shell --replace

(gnome-shell:30065): mutter-WARNING **: Can't initialize KMS backend:
Could not get session ID: No such file or directory

If we can't replace it, it should be possible to get the display manager to
launch gnome-shell in valgrind at login. The order of execution seems to be:
gdm3 -> gdm-session-worker -> gdm-wayland-session -> gnome-session-binary ->
gnome-shell. I hit a dead end when trying to find config files though.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-03 Thread Paul
Ah yep, that would do it. Just be sure to have the script check the
username, because even if you're on a single-user system the gdm user
also runs a gnome-shell:

#!/bin/sh
if [ $USER = your_username_here ] ; then exec valgrind --tool=massif
--num-callers=32 --log-file=/tmp/gnome-shell.valgrind.log.%p $0.bin $* ; fi
exec $0.bin $*

I ran this and experimented with all the usual applications. Valgrind's
RSS was growing slowly as you'd expect until I played a video, then it
exploded to > 6 GiB and Wayland hung. I killed Valgrind with -HUP and it
did produce a valid profile (attached). Please check if this is what you
are after.

I'm now running it again but won't test video playback this time.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-03 Thread Paul
I see the same leak you do when interacting with the panel. In fact,
just pressing the Meta key twice to bring up and hide the overview leaks
1 MiB of RAM each time. Even switching workspaces leaks memory. These
are all things that jank once gnome-session's footprint has grown to
unreasonable sizes, so presumably that jank is a symptom of bloated
datastructures taking more cycles to negotiate.

Attached is another profile, from a session that didn't end with Wayland
pooping its pants.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-03 Thread Paul
I've installed most of the debug symbol packages, and the attached
Massif profile has far fewer unknowns. However, this isn't a proper run,
because when I try to log in now, gnome-shell grinds for a minute or so
and then quits. Works fine without Valgrind, of course. I suspect it has
some form of watchdog timer and is killing itself.

[Bug 1732038] [NEW] evince spams stderr with messages about "Allocating size to EvWindow"

2017-11-13 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

numerous error messages to stderr of the form:

[Bug 1799913] Re: Unhandled lockdown error (-2) - iphone ios 12

2019-11-03 Thread Paul
Same problem here, but then on Xubuntu 18.04.3 LTS computer and an old
iPhone 4.

Failed to mount "Documents on XYZ iPhone".
Unhandled Lockdown error (-2).

When I type "idevicepair pair" in the terminal, it gives me the
following message:

ERROR: Could not validate with device
d91d11bb8bf8225ab0dd67380ddec2a8afcbdc58 because a passcode is set.
Please enter the passcode on the device and retry.

However, on the iPhone itself I do not receive the "trust this device?"
message, and thus am unable to continue. Rebooting the iPhone or
computer does not help.

[Bug 1799913] Re: Unhandled lockdown error (-2) - iphone ios 12

2019-11-03 Thread Paul
Ok I actually made it work. Not sure if this still belongs here, but
might as well inform others how I fixed it. Maybe it will help you as
well.

Although I had never connected the iPhone to my PC before, I needed to
reset the trust settings to get the dialogue option to "trust this
device" on the iPhone.

The procedure is quite simple. Go to Settings > General >> Reset >>
Reset Location and Privacy. It is also explained here:
https://www.guidingtech.com/fix-iphone-trust-this-computer-not-showing-
up-issue/

By the way, I then still could not paste files on the iPhone. This might
be an Xubuntu specific issue, but I had to install iFuse first. See
here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/799414/how-to-move-files-from-
ubuntu-to-iphone

[Bug 1770502] Re: Brasero hangs when burning cds

2020-02-23 Thread Paul
On Ubuntu 18.04.3 I started experiencing the same problem. CD burning
worked fine with Brasero in December when I last burned a CD for my car.

I have suddenly had this problem since January, Brasero is hanging at
"Starting to Record"

I ran the commands from this thread:
sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/cdrdao
sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/wodim
sudo chmod 0755 /user/bin/growisfs

And now it gets a bit further but hangs at "Writing CD-Text Information"

I am forced to End Process for Brasero and then the CD appears as no
longer blank and I cannot use it again.

I have also tried K3b and XFBurn which have the same problem.

I have just clean installed this computer to 19.10 and again I have the
same problem.

Can anyone give me some help? I need to get a bunch of CDs burned
urgently by next weekend.

I have now wasted a whole bunch of blank CDs and I really do not want to
have to change to another OS to fix this.

[Bug 1688143] [NEW] Stop disabling bluetooth!

2017-05-03 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Randomly after resuming from sleep, restarting, logging in or opening
the screen on a laptop, bluetooth gets disabled. This is a major problem
for bluetooth peripheral users as it can cause the system to be unusable
without having to use a non-bluetooth peripheral just to re-enable
bluetooth.

This is completely unrelated to bluetooth discovery, of which is
normally disabled in this use-case.

[Bug 1698547] Re: pasting into gnome-terminal pastes into a different terminal window

2017-06-25 Thread Paul
Yes, it's very rare, only happened to me twice so far since upgrading to
17.04. Unfortunately, I don't know what triggers it.

Never use terminal tabs so I didn't think to test that. Nor
Shift+Insert, although since even clipboard paste is affected, it's
likely that Shift+Insert is too.

This is a fairly stock Ubuntu-Gnome 17.04 on Xorg.

[Bug 1703466] [NEW] something continually steals focus, preventing interaction with any window

2017-07-10 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Sometimes after unlocking the screensaver, Gnome is unusable because no
window can be focused.

Symptoms:
* When a window is clicked, its decoration flashes to focused and then
immediately changes back to unfocused.
* The mouse cursor correctly changes when positioned over e.g. an input field,
but no clicks get through to the application, nor do any keystrokes.
* Global keyboard shortcuts like Meta and Ctrl+Alt+⇩ sporadically work a few
times, but mostly have no effect.
* The Gnome taskbar at the top of the screen accepts clicks and seems to work
fine, but keyboard actions are also blocked.

Killing all applications (which requires logging in via SSH) doesn't
resolve the problem. The entire Gnome session must be killed, then it's
fine the next time until the problem recurs.

Wow, that's bad. Hope it can be fixed before the global switch to Gnome

I'll mark this ticket as a duplicate. Thanks for the info.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2017-07-11 Thread Paul
Interesting. This bug seems to be a focus issue, so your similar
symptoms might have been directly caused by that Logitech hardware bug.
I am still affected despite an Intel GPU (untainted kernel) and wired
mouse, but may follow your lead next time and try unloading and
reloading the HID modules to see if that clears whatever is stuck in
gnome-shell.

[Bug 1709597] [NEW] gnome-shell infinite loop, system is unusable

2017-08-09 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

gnome-shell randomly enters an infinite loop, at which point the entire
screen stops redrawing except for the mouse cursor. (The mouse cursor
still changes correctly for the foreground application when moving
between e.g. text fields and buttons.) The only way to recover is to
kill the gnome-shell, which may or may not destroy the session and all
running GUI applications.

We really need to get this fixed if we are to ship Gnome as the standard
GUI in 18.04.

2017-08-09 Thread Paul
Thanks for the instructions, I will do that if the bug recurs.

By the way, it is an infinite loop (spinning on one core), not a hang.
Presumably the latter is used as an umbrella term within the desktop
team?

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-07-16 Thread Paul
Same problem here, driving me crazy because it's unpredictable. Last
night I copied 500GB (movies 1-2 GB) from an old external HDD to a new
external external HDD. Finished the next morning without problems. Next
I wanted to copy 5GB and the transfer became slower until it came to a
halt. The system (Ubuntu 14.04) froze, I could't use the mouse/keyboard.
Had to reset my computer at the risk of damaging the disk. Luckily that
didn't happen. Tried a couple times but the system kept on freezing. Had
to use Windows to get the job done.

[Bug 1650681] [NEW] tracker-extract uses 1GB of RAM at idle

2016-12-16 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

After two weeks, tracker-extract had an RSS of 0.5GB. I rebooted the
system and logged back in. tracker-extract started working, and had soon
consumed 1GB. It stopped extracting after a few minutes ("tracker daemon
-w" shows no further activity) but keeps sitting at around 1GB resident.

Initial:
PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
2425 0.0 1.5 2979100 517124 tty3 SNl+ Dec03 1:54

[Bug 1747773] [NEW] Session hangs completely for several minutes with "no app for changed" messages

2018-02-06 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Once in a while the Gnome session wedges completely: no screen refresh,
no mouse movement, etc. The system is still running and can be SSHed
into. top via an SSH session shows no undue CPU load at this time, and
no memory pressure. syslog has gnome-software "no app for changed"
messages for many modules.

I sigh, start remotely HUPing various applications ... and then the
session returns as if nothing had happened. (Not sure if it would have
done so without closing applications.)

We'd better fix this before April.

[Bug 1748321] [NEW] Sort order is bizarre, and can not be changed

2018-02-08 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Create some test files as follows:

$ touch 0110-0.jpg 0110-A.jpg 01A00010-0.jpg
03BBF000-0.jpg 3bA1A000-0.jpg 3BD22000-0.jpg
A4AC3000-0.jpg 00011 00011.jpg 00021

View them at the command line and in Nautilus:

$ ls -1
0110-0.jpg
0110-A.jpg
01A00010-0.jpg
03BBF000-0.jpg
3bA1A000-0.jpg
3BD22000-0.jpg
A4AC3000-0.jpg
00011
00011.jpg
00021
$ nautilus .

ls sorts files as one might expect. It is not case sensitive (unless you
use a case sensitive locale, e.g. LANG=C), but sorts alphabetically.

Nautilus sorts the files in a bizarre order, regardless of which locale is
used. Weird behaviours include:
* Longer but otherwise equal filenames sort before shorter ones
* Sometimes ignores runs of zeros, but not punctuation
* Seems to detect runs of digits and sort them at the end

The actual behaviour is very complex and difficult to predict, though it
must follow some internal logic. The end result is that files don't sort
in any reasonable order. This also impacts some other applications, such
as Eye of Gnome. Others, like Transmission, respect locale.

[Bug 1542146] [NEW] Nautilus fails to preserve directory timestamp on move

2016-02-04 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Move a directory using mv and its mtime will be preserved. Move a
directory using Nautilus, and its mtime will be set to the time it was
moved. This is a bug.

Nautilus preserves mtime for file and directory copies as well as file
moves. Moveover, if the user attempts to move a directory that the user
does not have permission to delete (e.g. it is owned by another user), a
copy will be created with the correct mtime. This indicates that
Nautilus is taking an additional step that blats the mtime, but only on
moves, and only after they have already successfully created the
destination file.

etc.); its title bar disappears and it is now correctly maximised.

Now un-maximise the terminal (same way as before). It briefly flashes
down to its former size and position, then instantly resizes to take up
the entire desktop. So it looks like when it was maximised, except its
title bar is still visible.

Re-maximising and un-maximising from this state doesn't return the
previous dimensions; the gnome-terminal has forgotten its original size.

Thanks Darrel,

I didn't run the script, but did pretty much the same thing, and yes it
worked.

Thanks,

[Bug 1347437] Re: evolution crash on startup

2014-08-14 Thread Paul
I was able to build my own deb from git clone from
https://git.gnome.org/evolution (and -ews and -common as well as gnome-

break apt supposedly) if anyone wants to compare.

2014-08-20 Thread Paul
Update, Fabien rebuilt -ews upon e-mail discussion and now the version
went from 3.13.4-fta1 to 3.13.4-fta2 just for the -ews package. Expand
here: https://launchpad.net/~fta/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3/+packages

I'd like to confirm this fixed it.
