[Bug 643118] [NEW] Desktop corruption – Screen only shows vertical bands

2010-09-19 Thread crjackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

char...@charles-laptop:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release:10.10

After updating from the BETA release OR upon booting from the LiveCD,
the system will load through the Plymouth splash screen, then as the
desktop OR install dialogue SHOULD be loaded the screen goes corrupt.
It shows first vertical bands of black and white stripes of various
widths. Then the colors are loaded and the bands are the same but
colored.

I'm not sure if I'm filing this against the right package so this is a
WAG. If this is the wrong package then please point me to the correct
one.

Also, please direct me to any needed log files. I'm not sure what is
needed here. I'll have to barrow a camera to take a picture if you need
one. Obviously a screen shot isn't possible.

[Bug 649534] [NEW] No desktop after installing newest package in Maverick

2010-09-27 Thread crjackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

After installing the Maverick BETA everything is fine until getting
updates for the gnome-settings-daemon. Boot will start normally but the
desktop is nothing more than wide bands of color that match the desktop
colors. It's a bunch of vertical stripes.

After about 15 clean installs and 2 weeks of testing I found that the
problem is caused by this package. I now have a working system by
installing the beta, and version locking the package after the initial
install. After that I can grab all the updates and it works fine.
Updating this one package trashes the system.

I also can't boot to a usable desktop from a daily build of the LiveCD
if it's newer than the beta because it has the exact same problem.
Booting to a LiveCD of the beta and then upgrading ONLY this package
will also break the LiveCD.

I have an eMachines laptop as follows:

Model: M6809
AMD Athlon64 Mobile 3200+ (single core cpu)
1.25 GB memory
ATI Radeon Mobile 9600 video w/64 MB of video memory

No other devices attached.

Currently the system is NOT broken due to version locking the package.
For this reason I have not yet included any logs. Please tell me how
you would like me to proceed.

I would like to get this working and consider it critical since I won't
be able to boot / install a working system from a release CD unless this
is fixed.

Thanks, Charles

Okay, log files on the way. I just need to know if I should upgrade the
package and let it break the system before I send them. I would image
log files from a working system wouldn't be what you are looking for.

I did this wrong the first time. I tried it again and it does exactly
as you predicted. I'll try the other tests now and report back.

'Can you please also try the following:
Install the newest, broken package again. Then run these command:
 cd /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow
 sudo mv gnome-settings-daemon.desktop gnome-settings-daemon.desktop.disabled
Now restart your computer. This time you should see the login screen, but it
will break again as soon as you log in to a normal Gnome session. Is this
correct?'

Okay, so I used the first method of renaming the gnome-settings-
daemon.desktop and got to the login screen.

Then I used the recovery console and typed in the command:
gconftool-2 --type=bool --set
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup false

Then I exited the recovery console and continues to login to Gnome as
usual.

It all worked as you described... Thanks.

It seems this problem repeats itself with every release. Here I am in

[Bug 643118] Re: [RV350] Desktop corruption – Screen only shows vertical bands

2010-09-29 Thread crjackson
FYI - I'll be going into the hospital for surgery so I won't be able to
work on this anymore for several days. If you ask for information and I
don't reply, it's because I won't be able to.

[Bug 250695] Re: Rythmbox freezes when using keyboard volume keys

2009-02-18 Thread crjackson
Had the same problem using Hardy 8.04.2

The only work around that fixed the problem wah to remove the directory
called "mmkeys" located in "/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/"

Thanks Steve Zemanek - the .gconf workaround didn't do anything for me
but the mmkeys did the trick.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2008-06-02 Thread crjackson
I'm having the issue of the trashcan icon going invisible on one
computer, and wireless almost never working on another. This happend on
the most recent 06/02/2008 batch of updates for Hardy 32-bit.

There were kernel updates that required a restart and many gnome
updates. After rebooting, I lost the trash can icon (it's there, just
invisible, so adding another one does no good), and the wireless on my
laptop is almost impossible to get working after a reboot. I have to
leave the stupid thing turned on all the time in order for wireless to
work.

[Bug 224807] [NEW] Launch Media - Keyboard Shortcut Broken

2008-04-30 Thread crjackson
Public bug reported:

After a clean install of Ubuntu Hardy 32-bit, I find that I can no
longer press the media key on the keyboard to launch rhythmbox which is
my default media player. This worked out of the box with Feisty and
Gutsy. I went to the Keyboard Shortcuts tools in the system preferences
and reset the accelerator (even though it was already displaying the
correct values) to no avail. I can only conclude this is a bug.

I'm using a Logitech Corded Keyboard with a PS2 adapter. This is an
older model internet/media keyboard. P/N: 867395-0100 (131723-301 A)

My System Specs:

AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4800+ @ 2.6 GHz
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI - BIOS 3.11 - 2 GB Curcial DDR
GeForce 7900 GTO, Pioneer DVR-108, Pioneer DVR-115D
2x 74 GB WD Raptors SATA , 2x 250 GB Hitachi SATA (Data)

** Affects: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
