Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon
After installing the Maverick BETA everything is fine until getting updates for the gnome-settings-daemon. Boot will start normally but the desktop is nothing more than wide bands of color that match the desktop colors. It's a bunch of vertical stripes. After about 15 clean installs and 2 weeks of testing I found that the problem is caused by this package. I now have a working system by installing the beta, and version locking the package after the initial install. After that I can grab all the updates and it works fine. Updating this one package trashes the system. I also can't boot to a usable desktop from a daily build of the LiveCD if it's newer than the beta because it has the exact same problem. Booting to a LiveCD of the beta and then upgrading ONLY this package will also break the LiveCD. I have an eMachines laptop as follows: Model: M6809 AMD Athlon64 Mobile 3200+ (single core cpu) 1.25 GB memory ATI Radeon Mobile 9600 video w/64 MB of video memory No other devices attached. Currently the system is NOT broken due to version locking the package. For this reason I have not yet included any logs. Please tell me how you would like me to proceed. I would like to get this working and consider it critical since I won't be able to boot / install a working system from a release CD unless this is fixed.
