[Bug 498974] Re: Backlight behaves erratically when changed from keyboard.

2010-03-28 Thread WeatherGod
Wyatt, have you tried to modify the screen brightness from the Power
Management? I find I have the most issues when I try to change the
screen brightness using the hotkeys. But I have not had issues if I do
it from the Power Management.

2010-03-04 Thread WeatherGod
stlubuntu,

The developers for the braesero thinks they have found the cause of your
bug. They wish to know if this is happening for all music CDs that you
have or not. Particularly, they suspect that the problem is related to
CDs that have what is known as CD-TEXT. Maybe older music CD does not
trigger the crash?

2009-12-02 Thread WeatherGod
lo), there are tags available to mark a bug report as happening during
an upgrade, if that is what you mean. As for the "autocorrecting", many
bugs were discovered and fixed in a very short period of time after the
Karmic release. There were also some very specific use cases where an
upgrade did cause regressions, but I would hardly call the initial
release "wrong".

However, with the upcoming Lucid LTS, I encourage you to please try out
the alpha and beta versions and report bugs so that we can make sure
that the LTS upgrade is as smooth as possible.

a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you

you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 496681] Re: Rhythmbox does not save playlist on iPod

2009-12-14 Thread WeatherGod
Lorenz, thank you for reporting this issue. I am curious, was the iPod
initialized by iTunes on a Mac or Windows? Depending on which OS
initializes it, determines what kind of filesystem is used (hfs+ for
Mac, fat32 for Windows). Knowing which file system is on the iPod will
help determine your issue.

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2009-12-19 Thread WeatherGod
Grondr, thank you for your in-depth and exhaustive analysis. It will
prove to be very valuable. I have marked this report as "Confirmed" for
metacity, and I hope that will help capture the attention of the
metacity maintainers.

I think you have a much better handle on what is going on than I do, and
doubt I would be able to do a proper summary of the issue. If you are
willing, could you please update the description above with a summary
of: symptoms, diagnosis/causes, and possible work-arounds. Usually,
when I revise a description, I set those things as subsections with
headers like so:

=== Symptoms ===
   ...

=== Diagnosis ===

=== Work-arounds ===

Bug reports that are nicely formatted like this are more likely to be
dealt with by maintainers. I hope this helps get their attention and
that they then can resolve this issue for you.

[Bug 505289] [NEW] In keyboard selector, dropdown box for country selection does not respond to keypress

2010-01-09 Thread WeatherGod
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

While selecting the country (and variant) for the keyboard layout, the
dropdown selection box only responds to mouse clicks and arrow keys and
'enter' key. I believe that the dropdown box should also be responding
to keypresses of the letter by jumping to the item in the sorted list.

For example, when that country box is selected, I would expect that
pressing "U" would have the dropdown box jump to "Ukraine".

I have experienced this in Lucid, but I suspect it also exists in
previous versions.

[Bug 505898] Re: Copying/moving files from one filesystem to another fails if filename contains unallowed characters by the other file system

I can confirm this behavior, however, I am hesitant to call this a bug.

[Bug 392871] Re: gnome-terminal doesn't save the entire history if 2 are open

2010-01-12 Thread WeatherGod
Pedro, I can't find a bug report yet, but I have found some discussions
about this. There are a lot of pros and cons with the different
approaches. The 'problem' is mostly with bash's approach with managing
multiple sessions (i.e. - it doesn't, nor should it). gnome-terminal
can invoke bash in special ways to do different things with the history
file and get different behaviors. However, as I understand it, the
current setup for gnome-terminal emulates the behavior of being logged
into simultaneous tty sessions.

Here are some postings about how to sync the history file between multiple
terminals (however, I am not advocating them):
http://fixunix.com/slackware/369510-bash_history-file.html
http://briancarper.net/blog/keeping-bash-history-in-sync-on-disk-and-between-multiple-terminals
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-bash/2007-08/msg00016.html
http://groups.google.com/group/gnu.bash.bug/browse_thread/thread/873e3e06f76c78c7/5d5d5e99945bcd69

The issue with trying to sync multiple sessions together is actually
very messy. The question is *how* should they be synced? Should it be
appended line-by-line? Or should the entire session be appened when the
session finishes? Or should it be that the last session gets to have
the file? What if a user has two different terminal emulators up, both
using bash? What about a session within a session?

Here are a couple of discussions about the issue:
http://groups.google.com/group/gnu.bash.bug/browse_thread/thread/64587d478d40f84d/72b9f72bcba7e546
http://groups.google.com/group/gnu.bash.bug/browse_thread/thread/d10e25a877d92218/65dd823c150914b7

Now, I would like to quickly make a clarification within the
description. When closing the second terminal and examining the history
in the first terminal, the "history" command will have the first
terminal history, because that is the history in memory for that
terminal. However, what happens to the .bash_history file depends upon
how that "in-memory" history is appended to the history file.

On my current system (Fedora 11), it appears that each terminal's
history is appened to the history file when the gnome-terminal is
closed.

I merely post this as a source of information for further discussion. I
am not advocating any particular position, I am merely pointing out the
non-obvious messiness that comes with the history feature.

[Bug 500584] Re: The mouse, occasionally, though it's still, disconnect the monitor energy saving mode

2010-01-14 Thread WeatherGod
Simon, thank you for taking the time to report this bug. I am not quite
to sure I understand the issue you are having. Are you saying that your
monitor will randomly come out of power-saving mode even though you
didn't touch the mouse?

If so, a possible cause might be that the sensitivity level is set too
high for the mouse (although this should probably be a separate setting
for bringing a computer out of sleep mode).

[Bug 498974] Re: Backlight behaves irradically when changed from keyboard.

2010-01-14 Thread WeatherGod
I can confirm this odd behavior on my EeePC (even on AC power) using
9.04 UNR. If I modify my current brightness using the hotkeys, the
screen will later change its brightness to something else. Also, I
don't think it is related to going into or out of idle, and I can't seem
to notice a particular trigger for it.

The only work-around I have figured out is to change the brightness
level from within gnome-power-manager and not touch the hotkeys.

+ Latest version of Rhythmbox for Karmic Koala does not detect the CD for
+ playing music. The "Import File..." procedure to load the CD does not
+ yield a CD to select.
+
+ === Workaround ===
+ Use alternate media player like Banshee.
+
+ === Cause ===
+ Not exactly sure of the cause. This may be a non-intuitive user interface
issue, or possibly something is wrong to prevent Rhythmbox from properly
detecting the CD.

[Bug 490238] Re: Video Player does not show any video, but has audio, if connected to an external monitor (dual monitor setup)

2010-01-22 Thread WeatherGod
bkp, I am not 100% certain, but you might have to install python-
launchpadlib to make apport-collect work. I don't think apport-collect
was a part of the standard 8.10 install.

Also, because you have a different version and different hardware, I
would suggest filing a new bug report -- just in case the cause for this
one is different. In the new bug report, I would mention this bug
report so that we can mark them as duplicates in the future if that is
the case.

It may also be possible that your problem has already been solved for
your hardware, but was possibly not backported to your OS version (which
sometimes happens because of various reasons). It may be helpful to try
out the LiveCD (or LiveUSB) of Karmic Koala and see if the problem
persists.

Thank you for taking the time to report your issue and thank you for
helping to make Ubuntu better!

[Bug 511903] Re: Notification balloon disappears when hovering over it

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Agreed, this is the "correct" behavior, however, I am not sure it is the
"best" behavior. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I never quite
right about it. Maybe it should fade away, or become translucent?

The original reporter's suggestion of having a "X" to close the
notification is very Windows-esqe and is really only useful if the
bubble was to remain up until the user acknowledges it. That particular
behavior has been often criticized by UI experts and so I would like to
remain away from that.

[Bug 511903] Re: Notification balloon disappears when hovering over it

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Saverio, the reason for having it disappear is because otherwise, it
would prevent users from being able to click on window elements below
the notification box. For Jaunty Jackalope (9.04), it did not do this,
and it would be fairly annoying if you used an application like Pidgin
that also used notification icons to display status changes of buddies.

I do agree that it can be improved, but not having it disappear was
actually worse than the current behavior.

Also, I am a little confused by your statement "when a user connects to
a wireless network, it says 'click on the icon'". I am not aware of
this behavior. Does this happen only for joining new networks?

[Bug 478962] Re: [karmic] Audio CDs do not play in rhythmbox after upgrade

2010-01-24 Thread WeatherGod
Doris, what Teej is asking for you to do is very similar to what I had
you do for comment #12. The "terminal" is a program found in
"Accessories" and lets you type in commands (much like computers back in
the 80's and early 90's). This time, instead of the "apport-collect
..." command, you will type "rhythmbox -d" and then press enter.
Rhythmbox will then start up. Do not close the terminal until after you
finish with Rhythmbox.

I hope this clears things up.

[Bug 478962] Re: [karmic] Audio CDs do not play in rhythmbox after upgrade

2010-01-26 Thread WeatherGod
Doris, if you could, we would like to gather some more data. Can you
please run the following command in the terminal twice (once before
inserting a CD, and once after inserting a CD):

gvfs-mount -li

After running the command before and after inserting a CD, do the
"Select All", then "Copy" just like you did for the previous command.
Then open Gedit and "Paste" the information and save the text file. You
can then upload that file to this bug report.

Note that it might be that nothing prints from those commands. If that
is the case, then I would like to double-check everything by doing the
same thing, but with your USB thumb drive that you used for backing up
your files instead of a CD.
