[Bug 626016] Re: Swell Foop game does not work

2010-09-07 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Same problem here, running an eeePC 1005 (Intel). This program was
really buggy in 10.04, crashing frequently. I'm hoping we get a
functional version for 10.10 since its predecessor (same-gnome) was one
of my go-to games when I wanted to waste 5 minutes or less!

[Bug 633292] [NEW] Lights Off game doesn't work

2010-09-08 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Upon upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 beta, the game Lights Off (package
lightsoff) has ceased to function. If I choose it from the menu, the
window loads, and the level indicator appears at the bottom, but no
blocks appear in the gameplay area as expected, and level up/down and
new game commands do nothing.

Here is the output when run from terminal:

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work

2010-09-08 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Both gnibbles and swell-foop are completely broken too. I know games
aren't high priority but they are often the first thing a new user will
try out (and by them, judge the OS). (I myself was motivated to switch
to Linux by the kde games available on a Red Hat machine in my office
several years ago...)

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work

2010-09-08 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I think this might be different, but I'm not sure. At least the error output I
got is different, and the attached screen shot doesn't agree with what I'm
getting.
More info: I just tried running the program again to get a screen shot. Right
now I'm using the Unity netbook interface, and running it from the terminal
brings the same error messages, but now no window shows up at all! I'm going
to re-login using the gnome desktop to see if the window still launches there.

I still get the program window when I login to the gnome desktop - see

fact the same as bug #616288.)

[Bug 633786] [NEW] Runaway process when trying to access Windows Network in Nautilus

2010-09-08 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

First instance occurred when clicking on the Network folder in the Ubuntu
'Places' menu, resulting in the error message appearing in screenshot-1.
However, I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem.
Later instances occurred as follows (steps to reproduce):

1. Choose the Network bookmark, either from the Places menu or from the left
pane in Nautilus.
2. Click on Windows Network. An 'Accessing Windows Network' message appears,
with an option to cancel.
3. Click on the Cancel button.

At this point a runaway gvfsd-smb-browse process will occur using 80-90% CPU
(this is on an eeePC 1005HA), along with the message appearing in screenshot-2.
In 10.04 I was able to browse the Windows Network with no problems; when both
this computer and my girlfriend's laptop (running Vista) were connected to the
same wireless router - as is currently the case - I could see her shared files.

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work

2010-09-19 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
After the update of the gnome-games package this problem persists. When I
first ran lightsoff after the update I got the same thing as in the image
posted by Stef (except that the counter was set to 1).
There was also a window with seed in the title bar that appeared very briefly
before the lightsoff window appeared. Subsequent attempts to run the program
get me the window as in post #8 above.
Also immediately after closing the window I got the following crash report:
wncksyncdaemon crashed with signal 5 in _XError()
However, I can't reproduce this crash so it was probably a coincidence.

[Bug 838404] [NEW] opening existing file with gksu gedit creates untitled document

2011-08-31 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

When opening a text file as super user, using gksu gedit , the

[Bug 844385] [NEW] border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes

2011-09-07 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

This is not so much a bug as a design problem in the latest version of
gnome-sudoku, but it leads to serious playability issues. Since 3x3
squares are relevant to game play, there is typically a darker border
around those squares as compared to the individual squares. The only
theme where this border is in fact darker is high contrast inverse.
With the high contrast them there is no border at all, even around the
individual squares. With most others, (Adwaita, Ambiance) there is no
difference in the thickness of the individual and 3x3 borders. The game
should display correctly regardless of theme.

[Bug 626016] Re: Swell Foop game does not work

2011-09-10 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
The patch wasn't mine! I think it came from upstream and was posted
here by Jonathan. Although, this may all be moot, since in 11.10
testing it looks like both swell-foop and lightsoff have been pulled
from the gnome-games package - in fact they're gone from the
repositories altogether. So perhaps these two ended up being more
trouble than they're worth.

[Bug 828932] Re: can't focus Contact List while a conversation window is open

2011-09-15 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I should add that this remains a problem in the latest version of Unity in
11.10. The general bug summary is the following:
1. There are never problems if the Unity launcher is used to select a window -
this always results in proper window focus.
2. To reproduce the bug (it doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it will always
happen after a couple of tries) have Firefox or Empathy open on one workspace,
and switch to another, and do something there (eg check email in Thunderbird).
Then, return to the original workspace using the keyboard (Ctrl-Alt-Arrows) and
use the mouse to select the window by clicking on it.
3. In the case of Empathy, you will not be able to get the application menu to
show in the global appmenu. In the case of Firefox, things will seem to be
working (eg clicking links will be fine) until you try to do something with a
context menu (eg right clicking, or the drop-down menu in the URL bar).
Sometimes clicking will fail to bring up the context menu at all, and when it
does, it will disappear as soon as the mouse cursor is moved.
4. If I unfocus the window (eg by clicking on the desktop or changing back to
another workspace) and then use the Launcher to refocus, normal behaviour
returns.

[Bug 1751175] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not save metadata for FLAC files

2018-02-22 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10, Rhythmbox does not record the metadata
entered in the "Extract" interface when converting CDs to FLAC files. (I
have not checked to see if the same is true with mp3.)

Expected behaviour: I load a CD, and Rhythmbox loads the metadata for
the album from MusicBrainz (or I enter it manually if the album is not
found). If I click Extract, the CD is converted to my preferred file
format (in this case, FLAC), and the metadata is added to the resulting
files.

This was the case on Ubuntu 17.04 and earlier.

Current behaviour: metadata is loaded from MusicBrainz as usual, but
when I extract, most of it is not added to the files.

If the metadata provided is Track Number, Artist, Album, Title, Genre,
Disc number, and Year, I see the following:

The title that results is the file name, for example:
James Ehnes - 02 - Ravel: Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré.flac

The Artist, Album, Track Number, and Genre tags are not written.

Curiously, the Disc number and year tags *are* written.

More curiously, as a file is being converted, all the tags display in
Rhythmbox as expected. But the moment the extraction reaches the end of
the file, and the file is saved, the tags disappear.

[Bug 1245064] Re: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard

2014-01-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Doing a Google search on this issue led me to this report, as well as the
following blog post:
http://www.humans-enabled.com/2013/10/ubuntu-1310-enable-controlaltbackspace.html
The author points out that it's possible to access all of these options from a
terminal. (Although it would be nice it the GUI was still there...) The command

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

brings up a pretty straightforward interface that takes you though about
half a dozen keyboard options (compose key, etc). The last option is
whether or not to enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

[Bug 1095962] Re: Empathy GUI does not start

2013-05-11 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I'm also seeing this. I've always used empathy -h in my startup
applications so I'd be signed in in the background - I'd forget to sign
in otherwise, but I also didn't want it popping up every time I signed
in. In the past it would sign you in and then you could get the contacts
list to pop up by clicking on the empathy icon in the email/chat
indicator icon. Now with empathy -h the program seems to be running in
the background, but there's no way to bring up the contacts list -
trying to run empathy from the dash, terminal indicator icon, etc all
fail. The only way I can get it to run is to first run "killall empathy"
and then relaunch.

[Bug 984141] [NEW] Status menu not readable using Radiance theme

2012-04-17 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

The drop-down status menu in Empathy (online, away, etc.) is currently
being displayed with grey text on a slightly darker grey background,
making it impossible to read. If you mouse-over a particular status the
text changes to white and it becomes readable, but the menu as a whole
requires some very strenuous squinting at the moment.

Hmm... apparently not. After the latest series of updates the background
for the status menu is a light grey, almost white, with dark text. Must
have been a temporary issue. I'm marking it as invalid since I can't
reproduce the issue as of today.

As it turns out, I can add a screenshot after all, as the issue has

other times the background is white and I can read it perfectly fine -
and I've made no settings changes.

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work correctly

2010-10-13 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Yes, the final release is out now, and this package is still broken, along with
swell-foop and gnibbles - all three regressions from 10.04 (although admittedly
swell-foop was never stable and itself was a regression from the older
same-gnome).
Is this an upstream problem? Does anyone know if the gnome games packages all
work correctly on other distributions?

[Bug 654272] Re: worm game. cannot start new game. game score is initialized but the game splash (worm with green background) does not disappear

2010-10-13 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I can also confirm this bug - and add that it's been this way since
10.10 beta, as far as I can recall. This is one of three packages in
gnome-games that has regressed to the point of being completely
unplayable in 10.10 - the other two being lights off (which worked
perfectly in 10.04) and swell-foop (which worked but was unstable in
10.04)

[Bug 633292] Re: Lights Off game doesn't work correctly

2010-11-11 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
The problems with online games I would think are unrelated. I've found
in the past (before Sun released a 64-bit java plugin) that the open
source Iced Tea java plugin handles 95% of applets just fine, but there
were a handful of specialised applets that wouldn't work. Check to see
if you have sun-java6-plugin installed - I think Iced Tea might be the
default (apologies if I'm totally wrong about this). Sun's java plugin
should handle any java games (it's what's used on windows if I remember
correctly).

2011-10-19 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Hi Martin,
Immediate feedback is: huge improvement! The game is now playable. I don't
have time to do a full test now but first impressions are good, and I'll add
further comments once I get a chance to test further. FWIW, I think it's great
that I can post a design complaint about a relatively unimportant game and get
results in a matter of weeks :-)
11.10 is looking great so far. Thanks!

It's been fixed in the latest version - follow Martin's instructions in
#5 and you'll be up and running. (Just enable oneiric-proposed, reload,
and update.) The borders are now there. The interface for entering
notes is not as nice as it used to be (it no longer fits in the square)
but it works too - there's no problem with gameplay now.

No programming needed. Open up the Update Manager, and click on the
Settings... button bottom left; this opens up the Software Sources
window. Click on the Updates tab, and then check off the box next to
where it says Pre-released updates (oneiric-proposed). Close the
software sources window, and click on the Check button in update manager
to reload the software info. It should then ask you to update the
sudoku program to the latest version with the fix.

Andries:
For the suggestions you're asking for it's more appropriate to use either the
Ubuntu forums (ubuntuforums.org) or Ask Ubuntu (askubuntu.com) - Launchpad is
more for reporting bug info to the developers.
You won't be the first person with questions about things like disk layout, so
first thing to try is a Google search. Almost certainly you'll get a few
results involving old Ubuntu forum discussions with info. Ask Ubuntu is newer
but very helpful.

[Bug 751766] [NEW] Games swell-foop and lightsoff both segfault in 11.04

2011-04-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

I recently upgraded to the 11.04 beta on my eeePC 1005HA netbook; I decided to
try the games swell-foop and lightsoff since these were inoperable in 10.10
until very recently (the programs ran but did nothing). A fix was released -
the attachment from #12 in bug #626016 has these games up and running under
10.10 on my desktop.
I expected this fix to get pushed through to 11.04 but the situation is now
worse than before - if I try to launch either game, I get a segmentation fault
+ core dump.

[Bug 751783] [NEW] Can't select Thunderbird as Mail Reader in Preferred Applications

2011-04-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm running 11.04 Beta1, upgraded from 10.10 netbook edition. I have
Thunderbird installed as my default email client. In 10.10, if I opened
the Preferred Applications dialog in the Control Center, I could choose
between Evolution and Thunderbird as my default mail client. Since
upgrading, Evolution is the only option given. However, I am able to
choose between Firefox and Chromium for my web browser. Thunderbird
sets itself as the default mail client when I run it; however, this
isn't reflected in the Preferred Applications GUI.

Ideally, I should be able to select Thunderbird as my preferred email
reader, so that when I click on Check Email in the Unity dash, Ubuntu
opens Thunderbird rather than Evolution. I guess I could switch to
Evolution but I think my choice of email client should be respected by
the OS.

[Bug 844385] Re: border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes

2011-09-27 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I should add that this game does not display properly in every theme
available on a standard Ubuntu install. In some cases the lines and
borders do not show up; in one theme numbers that are entered are drawn
in white on a white background, in another, numbers in the highlighted
square are not visible. The most tolerable is the low-contrast theme,
where you can get almost everything to display correctly, as long as the
highlighted square is one of the permanent numbers (numbers you've added
are drawn in the same colour as the highlighting). In all other themes
the game is rendered nearly unplayable.

** Summary changed:

- border for 3x3 squares not visible in most standard themes
+ Display problems for gnome-sudoku in every theme installed by default

[Bug 860485] Re: bad default setting: suspend after 30min when plugged in

2011-10-03 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I'm getting the suspend issue as well, in spite of setting things to "don't
suspend" - surprisingly, it suspended even while playing music - I'd set a
playlist to listen to while doing some work away from the computer, and had
things come to a halt after 30 minutes. Everything is up to date on my machine.
What's worst is that this is on my desktop, which was never really meant to
suspend - the hardware's a bit older and the motherboard was fairly basic even
at the time of purchase. Once it suspends, I've got about a 50% chance of a
successful resume that doesn't require hitting the reset button.

[Bug 864661] Re: Remove empathy notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-04 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I am also seeing the old legacy notification icon for Empathy, and can find
nowhere in the settings to remove it. Of course, you can get rid of the old
icon by removing empathy from the systray whitelist using dconf-editor. But
for me it's easiest to set that to 'all' because I have a few programs that
aren't whitelisted by default that use the old notification area.
There used to be an option in empathy that hid the speech bubble icon (so only
the envelope is left) but I no longer see such an option.

[Bug 864661] Re: Remove empathy notification icon redundancy in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-12-15 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
No, the issue is that Empathy notifications are now built into the
indicator-applet (the envelope icon), but if you allow 'all' in the system
tray, you get an additional panel icon for Empathy, the legacy icon that
existed prior to Ubuntu's new notification system.
I'm no longer dealing with this issue since in 11.10 enough bugs have been
ironed out for me to stick with the default systray whitelist, which blocks the
second Empathy icon.

[Bug 778247] [NEW] monitor shutdown causes GPU hang

2011-05-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm filing this under gnome-power-manager since the problem occurs when it
attempts to put the monitor to sleep (but it might be an Xorg problem).
Problem: occasionally (about one time in three) when the system powers down the
monitor after 30 minutes, the OS gets stuck in an infinite loop: Mouse on blank
screen - flash of some boot message - Ubuntu login sound.

I was able to get into a virtual terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F2; there was an
error message at the top of the screen about a GPU hang.
(Unfortunately, I didn't write it down.)  This is my parents' computer;
I'm trying to troubleshoot while visiting. Previously they had just
disabled putting the monitor to sleep as a workaround (and until then
had been doing a hard reboot).

If there is further information I should post, please let me know.

[Bug 822371] [NEW] Lightsoff does not display properly with ATI graphics

2011-08-07 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

This game works perfectly on my ASUS netbook, but is a mess on my
desktop, which has an ATI graphics card (fglrx driver). When first
opened, I usually can't make out the game board. (The appearance is
different each time). If I open the preferences, and check - and then
uncheck the 'use colors from the Gnome theme' button, the game board
will display properly. It doesn't matter which state is selected
(checked or unchecked) when the program is started. Even after the
workaround, the counter at the bottom and the arrows for next/previous
level still do not display properly.

[Bug 828932] [NEW] can't focus Contact List while a conversation window is open

2011-08-18 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Public bug reported:

If I have a conversation window open in Empathy, it is not possible to get the
contact list back in focus - even if I move the contact list to another
workspace. If I try to use Alt-Tab instead of the mouse, the contact list does
not even show up as a selection choice.
I can however click on the contact list to open another conversation or change
my status.
This wouldn't be a big deal except that I'm running 11.04 with Unity. And of
course, in Unity, it is not possible to access the menus for a program unless a
window is in focus, thanks to the global menu. This means that it is
impossible to change a setting in Empathy without closing an open conversation
- the conversation window does have an entry for Edit->Preferences; only the
Contact List has this.

[Bug 828932] Re: can't focus Contact List while a conversation window is open

2011-08-18 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
Correction: this seems to be a Unity bug - similar to how you don't get
proper focus in Firefox if you use the keyboard to change workspaces
instead of choosing the program from the launcher. So, to reproduce you
have to open Empathy and a conversation window, go back to another
workspace (eg to check your email) and then return. Closing the Contact
List and then using the Chat/Email indicator icon in the panel to reopen
it gets things working again.

[Bug 663794] Re: Evince thumbnailer has high CPU load

2010-12-05 Thread Sean Fitzpatrick
I've noticed this problem too, but can't say what the specific issue is.
When it happeneds on my machine nautilus is open in a directory with 10
or more pdf files (all of which were created with pdflatex) - at some
point I notice a lot of activity in the CPU monitor I have running on my
bottom panel, and when I open the system monitor it's always the evince
thumbnailer that's the culprit. What can I do to generate a better bug
report for this issue?
