[Bug 580213] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when list view is enabled

2010-05-13 Thread Raptor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1 0

Nautilus crashes, when list view gets enabled. This status is saved, so
that any future look at that folder will result in a crash. If I start
nautilus via terminal it does seem to exit normally, no errors are
thrown. I did experiment a little bit with emerald a week ago but cannot
trace this error back to my experiments. This happened first to my home-
Directory, but it does also happen if I create a new folder and change
the view to list view. I also deleted my entire home-Directory and
created a new one. The crash is still reproducible.

[Bug 580614] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when list view is enabled

2010-05-14 Thread Raptor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am re-reporting this bug, since my old one got closed due to a missing
.crash-file. Old Bug can be found here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/580213

Double clicking the crash file did not work, apport tells me: "The
program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be
retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes."

My bug description:

that any future look at that folder will result in a crash. If I start
nautilus via terminal it does seem to exit normally, no errors are
thrown.

I did experiment a little bit with emerald a week ago but cannot trace

created a new one. The crash is still reproducible.

A .crash-File ist now attached to the report.

Re: [Bug 183608] Re: (Hardy) Evolution does not send / receive mail after upgrade

2008-04-23 Thread Raptor
FYI..I have found that the problem presents itself after the Dell
Inspiron 6000 is restarted after the system was suspended. Evolution
will have the send/receive button grayed out. If you run evolution
restore from the desktop, the problem is then resolved. This is just for
your information.
Thank you for checking back.

evolution from backup, I cans send and receive mail for a short time?
After that the send/receive icon greys out. All updates have been
installed todate.

How do I start SMB? If I open a terminal window and type SMB, it gets an

[Bug 73388] quick launch icons disappears after 2 drag and drops

2006-11-26 Thread RaptoR
Public bug reported:

hi, i'm using ubuntu edgy for amd64, and i noticed that if i drag and
drop an icon on the gnome panel it disappears, and a new "question mark"
icon comes out.

how to reproduce:

drag an icon (i used firefox one) from the desktop to the gnome panel and drop
it. now drag it again from the panel and drop near it's position, you must not
create a new icon but simply move that one.
after 2 moves the icon disappears and the question mark come out.

it's not a dangerous or annoying bug.. only a marginal one.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-
panel2'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

[Bug 329650] [NEW] Auto mounted CD should always have an "Explore" option. Right click menu should also have a "Properties" item.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

A friend recently gave me a DVD which contained a couple of VOBs of his
band playing gigs from which he wanted me extract a couple of songs for
YouTube.

So I insert the DVD into my Linux machine, it was auto mounted, and an
icon appears on the GNOME panel with the options of "Play" and "Eject
$DVD_LABEL". Sadly neither of these options are of use as I want to
know where the DVD is mounted so I can browse it.

Additionally when I right click on the icon in the panel the menu
doesn't contain a "Properties" item which would allow me to see where
the DVD has been mounted.

I therefore have *no clue whatsoever* where the item has been mounted or
how to get to it so I can access the files it contains (in reality I
know that DVDs are mounted in "/media" so I was able to find the files
but the GNOME desktop gives me no idea where the DVD had been mounted)

I therefore propose two things.

Firstly that the menu shown against all removable media (anything that
causes an icon to be added to the panel) should always have an option
for "Explore" on it. No exceptions. When this option is selected the
item in question should be explored. If necessary the volume should
also be transparently automounted first.

Secondly it should be a standard that everything visible to the user as
an icon should have a "Properties" item available on it's right click
menu that will always give basic information about the object. i.e.
similar to the item available when you right click an item in the right
hand pane of a Nautilus Window (note this is only on the right hand
pane, again this functionality is missing from items in the left hand
Nautilus panes)

In Windows Explorer you have the option to double click an object
representing removable media which will launch the default action for
the item (for DVDs this is to play them with the default media player)
However there is always an "Explore" action available which, for users
like me, is regularly used (In fact I never double click media icons as,
even though I run with it switched off, this could also cause the items
"autoplay" rubbish to be run infecting my machine with a Sony rootkit
etc. etc.).

Again in Windows when you right click almost any icon (or list view
item) you can get a properties window which will give you basic
information about the item. Invariably the "General" tab contains the
location of the item in the file system which is invaluable.

Without this functionality GNOME is severly lacking when compared to
Windows.

[Bug 329655] [NEW] Launchpad bug reporting should have a preview function.

2009-02-15 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Firstly I'm sorry to raise this against "nautilus" but there is no
option to raise bugs against "Launchpad" itself, I couldn't raise a bug
against any package that contained the word "Launchpad" (despite them
being offered in the "Choose" dialogue) and I couldn't find anywhere
else to raise the such a bug (Googling for how to do this simply gives
thousands of hits on how to use Launchpad to raise bugs against various
products) .

This feature request therefore relates to the behaviour of page:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug#form-start

When using launchpad to report a bug it would be nice to have a
"preview" function which would allow me to see the bug report as it will
look when posted. That way I might catch my spelling and grammar errors
before a bug is posted (it's far easier to read text on a page as
opposed to in an edit box)

This function should work similarly to the preview function used in many
bulletin boards (PHPBB) and Slashdot, etc. where an edit box is always
presented with a "submit" and "preview" button. In fact it's not a pain
to be always forced to preview your post at least once as I, for one,
don't seem able to spot mistakes in an edit control as easily as I can
when I'm reading a page (probably because my brain is in "edit" rather
than "read" mode :)

[Bug 329650] Re: Auto mounted CD should always have an "Explore" option. Right click menu should also have a "Properties" item.

2009-02-19 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Sorry I realise English may not be your first language but what exactly
are you referring to ?

If you're referring to the Naulius "Edit" > "Preferences", "Media" tabs
"Browse media when inserted" checkbox this is not the same thing at all.
That will browse the media upon insertion *only*.

I would simply like the drop down that appears in the GNOME panel when
removable media is inserted to always have an "Explore" item regardless
of the media type. If a removable device has a file system on it I
always want the option of browsing it.

This is currently either unavailable on my system or the option to
display it is not obvious and I therefore stand by my opinion that not
having a "Browse" item in the drop down menu makes GNOME functionally
inferior to Microsofts Windows Explorer.

Yes the issue is still present in Oneiric. Could you give me more info
about how to create that log. Just insert an SD Card and then type gvfs-
mount -o in terminal?

[Bug 822084] [NEW] Can't auto open SD cards (Oneiric alpha 3)

2011-08-06 Thread Rom Raptor
Public bug reported:

In Natty 64-bit i chose to automatically open SD cards with Nautilus.
Then what happened was when I inserted an SD card it would open fora
second and then close. Sometime during early summer the bug disappeared
(i'm guessing some update fixed it). Today I tried Oneiric alpha 3
64-bit and the bug is back.

PS. I've tried different card readers and yes it works every time in
Natty (since early summer) and never in Oneiric alpha 3.

[Bug 347197] [NEW] Nautilus "confirm file actions" dialogue needs to show file information

2009-03-23 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When pasting files into a directory then, should a file of the same name
already exist, the user is prompted with a dialogue stating "A File
named "$FILE_NAME" already exists. Do you want to replace it ?".

Sadly there is no information displayed for either the source or
destination file. The user is therefore unable to decide whether to
replace the file or not until they have manually inspected both source
and destination file size, date last modified etc.

The replace file dialogue should therefore be modified to show
sufficient file information to assist the user. This should, at a
minimum, include the file size and "date last modified" of both source
and destination files.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 194502] [NEW] Right click "Extract Here" action: Password dialogue doesn't have its title set.

2008-02-22 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

Nautilus features the "Extract Here" right click menu action which
allows you to unpack archives. When you do so a window pops up which
has the title "Extracting files from archive".

Should the archive be password protected a second window pops up asking
you to enter a password for the archive. At this point if you look at
the archive processes icon in your panel it says "untitled window".

The password prompt dialogue/form therefore needs its "title" attribute
setting (sorry not sure what the attributes name is under GTK) as it is
obviously still using the default.

Not an urgent fix but yet another small cosmetic oversight that should
really be cleared up :)

[Bug 197103] [NEW] Installing script in Nautilus should add them automatically

2008-02-29 Thread Raptor Ramjet
Public bug reported:

I've just used Synaptic to add the GNU "ConvertAudioFile" script to
Nautilus. However after doing so there was no right click "Scripts"
menu in Nautilus. So.. I had to manually install "nautilus-script-
manager" then drop to a terminal and do the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nautilus-script-manager list-available
ConvertAudioFile
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nautilus-script-manager enable ConvertAudioFile

After which I now have the "Scripts" menu in Nautilus.

This entire process should have been done automatically by Synaptic, I
should not have had to manually install and run the scripts manager.

But now the bloody script is popping up a bloody dialogue every 10 seconds
making it impossible to do anything until the bloody wretched thing has
finished. Damn the developer to hell who added this Microsoft "pop up a window
and steal focus" behaviour to GNOME !

[Bug 114413] Please let me turn off ALL notification popups

2007-05-13 Thread Raptor Ramjet
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello,

I have just run update manager in Ubuntu and after it had run I was
presented with a very rude yellow "popup" informing me something along
the lines of "Your system requires restarting, press the notification
are to restart your system".

Sorry ? No thank you. It is *MY* computer and *I* will decide when I
restart it. I am currently in the middle of working thankyou very much.

Firstly I would therefore like to know why this popup does not have an
option for me to tell it to "go away you rude popup or I will smite thee
a mighty blow to the kidneys with my axe" ?

Secondly there is also a perfectly good "shut down" item available on my
task bar, I'll use this when I want to restart my machine thankyou. I'm
quite capable of doing this myself.

Sorry but this notification area is an absolute bloody nuisance. It is
a very, very bad idea that has simply been copied from Microsoft Windows
XP without thinking about how to implement this functionality in a
decent manner. The whole reason that Windows is so fundamentally
unusable is that every 10 seconds some stupid program jumps to the
foreground and steals focus demanding you attend to it now (usually some
mindless update zombie, that's hooked itself into your system startup,
trying to check for updates to some two bit text viewing utility...).
It's like having a pack of hyperactive children running around then
coming and screaming in your face whilst you're trying to read a book.
Ubuntu does not need this design philosophy being copied in from
Windows. Leave the crap where it belongs.

Personally I do not ever want to see these yellow popups so I wish to
have a simple, consistent, accessible way to configure my system so that
it does not show them EVER. Honeslty I wouldn't care if my CPU is on
fire and it's about to explode and kill me. I DO NOT want to see a popup
on my desktop. They're as mindless as the dialogues that pop up to ask
"Are you sure you want to quit my precious application ?" when you 're
closing an app that isn;t an editor and doesn't have unsaved data.

Of course other people may like them so the obvious answer is to make
popups totally user configurable. In other words I should be able to go
to either gnome-control-center or to a menu item in "Preferences" and
there should be an applet for notification behaviour where I can
configure the notification area with something like the following
options:

1 Display notifications until I dismiss them.

2 Display them for "x" seconds then automatically dismiss them (where
"x" is user configrable) - I would suggest this should probably be the
default with "x" being given a value of either 20 or 30 seconds.

3 Do not display any notification popups ever for any reason
whatsoever. Nada. None. Zilch. No exceptions for any application
whatsoever even if the machine is about to explode etc. etc..

Additionally the notification must *NEVER* tell me that I *HAVE* to do
something. Don't be so bloody rude ! It is *MY* computer, running on
*MY* electricity and *I* decide what happens on it. It may wish to
inform me that something requires my attention but it must never try to
force me to take an action. It should also never be able to perform
tasks such as rebooting simply by clicking the area. One inadvertent
click and I would have lost a lot of work this morning.

Leave the nannying "we know best", "do this now" attitude to Microsoft
Windows where it belongs. If you do not you will also start turning
people off Linux. Most people I know are sick of Windows because of all
this sort of crap. They feel like they're serving their computer not
the other way round. I am not going to be able to get them to try
Ubuntu if all they're going to get is more of the same. Ubuntu Linux is
supposed to be better than Windows, not a catch up "me too" clone.

Enough of flashing icons, popups, continuous questions etc. etc. A good
computer is a quiet computer. After all I am the one using the
computer, it is not using me.

Thankyou.
