I've sent pitti, seb128 and kenvandine a slew of new .dsc, .diff.gz and
orig.tar.gz for karmics gnome-power-manager-2.27.5 with the updated and
reworked patch. But for the sake of completeness I provide you with my

[Bug 360228] Re: Rhythmbox album art is blurred in notification bubbles

2009-08-26 Thread Mirco Müller
Malaria, I don't know which version of notify-osd you tested that with,
but with the last couple of releases of notify-osd your described bug is
not reproduceable. See attached sample cover-images and screencast for
proof.

Commands used to trigger the notifications with the sample cover-images:
notify-send "Kenny Larkin (300x300)" "Metaphor Soul Man" -i
/tmp/test-cover-1.jpg
notify-send "Kenny Larkin (200x198)" "Metaphor Soul Man" -i
/tmp/test-cover-2.jpg

I did that on Jaunty with notify-osd 0.9.18.

[Bug 1028115] Re: Gdk.cairo_region_create_from_surface() raises an error in GI

2014-04-13 Thread Mirco Müller
Just want to add my 2 cents of information from messing with this
subject over the weekend...

To properly use cairo.Region() in Python one needs at least pycairo
1.8.10 (1.10.0 is current) for Python 3.x. For Python 2.x pycairo does
not support/implement cairo.Region().

I've an example implementing "click-through" using cairo.Region() and
cairo.RectangleInt() available here:

[Bug 390670] Re: notify-osd changes the way it supports int32-hints

2009-06-22 Thread Mirco Müller
The design team wants the indicator to "throb" when the user hits
volume/brightness up (down) but the systems state-value for that is
already at its maximum (minimum). The only way to communicate this to
notify-osd by using these special values 101 (-1), because notify-osd
has no (and should not have) any knowledge about system state-values for
volume/brightness. notify-osd just displays values without any knowledge
of its context.

Using values 0 and 100 like it was before, does not work. This is also a
bug reported by one of the members of the design team here:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/notify-osd/+bug/337820. The cause for
that bug is due to the incomplete or wrong patch work done on g-s-d and
g-p-m during the jaunty cycle. My patches fixes all that. Initially I
also considered fixing this already for the jaunty SRU-phase, but that
would have not gone past the SRU-policy-enforcers.

BTW the volume/brightness value is used directly if 0 <= value <= 100.

In addition to that the use of those two booleans make the code/patch
easier to read and thus understand.

[Bug 476124] [NEW] gdm does not start due to symbol lookup error

2009-11-05 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

With latest updates of today (6.11.2009) for Ubuntu 9.10, gdm
(2.28.-0ubuntu2) does not start up anymore. Trying to start it from a VT
as root gives me the following error:

/usr/sbin/gdm-binary: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiodbus.so: undefined symbol:
g_desktop_app_info_launch_handler_get_type

Trying to look up that call in the GIO API-manual via devhelp did not
yield any hit. Thus I wonder how this call can be used if it's not part
of the gio library coming with Karmic.

[Bug 476124] Re: gdm does not start due to symbol lookup error

2009-11-05 Thread Mirco Müller
Further investigation of this showed that I had a package called
libwncksync-glib installed. The shared library
/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiodbus.so with the symbol lookup error is part
of that package. gdm itself does not depend or link to any shared
library provided by libwncksync-glib. Still this undefined symbol causes
gdm not to start. I wonder if that's a design issue of GIO. Removing the
package libwncksync-glib, which nothing depends on, solved the issue and
got gdm back into working state.

[Bug 334809] Re: design problem? infinite wait for long queue

2009-10-08 Thread Mirco Müller
Like I mentioned in an earlier comment (with examples screencast) these
apps should make use of the "replace" or "append" feature of notify-osd.
Examples (in C, C# and Python) how to do that an upstream developer can
find in notify-osd trunk under...

./notify-osd/examples/update-notifications.[py|c|cs]
./notify-osd/examples/append-hint-example.[py|c|cs]

I'd say in general apps, which are not IM-clients (à la empathy or
pidgin) should use the update/replace feature of notify-osd.

[Bug 451086] Re: Rhythmbox Notification Bubble shows wrong cover art

In that case rhythmbox should update the bubble correctly. Examples for
doing this can be found in notify-osd trunk (lp:notify-osd) in ./notify-
osd/examples/update-notifications.py. There's also an ANSI C example,
but that's not up to date at the moment. This is solely an issue of
rhythmbox and none of notify-osd, therefore I'm reassigning this to
rhythmbox.

[Bug 451086] Re: Rhythmbox Notification Bubble shows wrong cover art

2009-10-14 Thread Mirco Müller
Here's how rhythmbox should go about this case when second song lacks
cover-art (pseudo-code):

// create a new bubble for first song
image_file = get_cover_art_image (song_one);
if (image_file)
n = notification_new ("Song one", "Artist one, Album one", image_file);
else
n = notification_new ("Song one", "Artist one, Album one", " "); //
note the space between the last double-quote pair

notification_show (n);

// update current bubble
image_file = get_cover_art_image (song_two);
if (image_file)
notification_update (n, "Song two", "Artist two, Album two",
image_file);
else
notification_update (n, "Song two", "Artist two, Album two", " "); //
note the space between the last double-quote pair

notification_show (n);

According to you example-case the first song will have a cover-image,
thus the if-branch will be executed (resulting in an icon-summary-body
layout case). For the second song the else-branch will be executed,
because it lacks a cover-image. Then the filename will be a simple
single space (and result in a summary-body layout case). This is needed
for notify-osd to be able to determine the bubble-layout and distinguish
update- from append-cases.

[Bug 451086] Re: Rhythmbox Notification Bubble shows wrong cover art

2009-10-23 Thread Mirco Müller
The cause for this bug is, that rhythmbox (rb) does not correctly reset
the hints on a notification.

So if a song does not have a cover-art defined for it, rb just passes a
default icon via the "icon parameter". But if a previous song had a
cover-art defined, it was sent from rb via DBus to the notification-
daemon (notify-osd in this case) using the "image_data" hint. If this
"image_data" hint is not explicitly cleared from rb before sending out
that default icon as "icon parameter", the pixbuf attached to that
"image_data" hint overrules the "icon parameter", resulting in the
notification showing the wrong/old cover-art.

I've written a patch against rb 0.12.5 to fix this. It is attached to
this comment. Furthermore I uploaded rhythmbox_0.12.5-0ubuntu5 to my PPA
here (https://edge.launchpad.net/~macslow/+archive/ppa/+packages).
Someone from the distro-team can grab needed bits from there and upload
it to main.

I also added a remark in the upstream bug-report
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598613) and attached my
patch there too.

[Bug 546650] Re: Unable to click items below notifications

2010-03-30 Thread Mirco Müller
The branch for fixing this in notify-osd I put up for review here:
https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~macslow/notify-
osd/fix-546650/+merge/22469

This keeps the changes within notify-osd. I don't fully understand why
only this works and the old way for creating the "empty" input-mask
failed, because the resulting input-mask in both cases is a 1x1 pixel
"large" bitmap in the top left corner of a notification-bubble's window.

This will also still work with older version of gtk+. You can give that
a try. Seb, if you want you can use the diff from that branch as a
distro-patch for the moment until I rolled a new notify-osd release
later this week. Still have to fight some other notify-osd bugs I want
to put in this weeks release.

Turned out to be a bug in notify-osd after all. It's an edge-case in the
blur-cache-regeneration-prevention. Working on a branch fixing this here

[Bug 605829] [NEW] metacity causing Xorg to hammer the CPU with a focus-request having timestamp of 0

2010-07-15 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

When starting metacity from a terminal-window with "metacity --replace"
I see Xorg hammering the CPU (top shows Xorg at ~75% of CPU) and in the
terminal tons of:

"Window manager warning: Got a request to focus 0x4801bae (mi...@x61:)
with a timestamp of 0. This shouldn't happen!"

When I move the mouse-cursor out of this very terminal-window this hammering of
the CPU stops.

[Bug 439437] [NEW] screen-brightness over- and undershoot effects not triggered in notification-bubble

2009-09-30 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

While the notify-osd rendered notification-bubbles are now correctly
triggered upon changing screen-brightness using the special keys on my
laptop-keyboard, the throbbing-effect of hitting the min. or max. values
are not triggered in the notification-bubble. Further investigation
shows that the trigger-values of -1 (for hitting min) and 101 (for
hitting max) are not passed from gnome-power-manager to notify-osd (via
libnotify). Thus gnome-power-manager/debian/patches/02-notify-osd-
support.patch has to be further improved.

[Bug 392533] Re: Brightness notification does not work

2009-10-01 Thread Mirco Müller
moomex, what kind of hardware and brand (laptop, desktop, netbook) do
you have? It could be that your system does short-circuit something in
lower parts of the library stack, not exposing brightness changes to
HAL, which gnome-power-manager uses to obtain info about any changes you
make via these special keys. Thus causing no notification-bubbles to
show up, because they are simply not issued by gnome-power-manager.

[Bug 334063] Re: enable compositing in metacity by default

2009-02-26 Thread Mirco Müller
There's not much one can do to improve the look of notifications for the
non-composite case without redesigning the way the bubble-background is
rendered (that black rounded rectangle thing). The non-composited case
never has been a priority. Therefore no design-thought went into this
case. The only requirement to fulfil is make it work under non-
composite. That goal is met. Click-through works, the shape of the
notification-bubble is the same etc. In addition to this I currently
have a huge problem with the notification-bubbles not being visible if
one is running metacity+compositor. That I had working flawlessly during
the sprint in Berlin and moved on to other tasks. Then about two weeks
later suddenly someon poked me that bubbles weren't showing for
metacity+compositor. Trying to find the commit that introduced this
regression with out a working bisect-plugin for bzr, is something I
currently resist to invest time on, considering other higher priority
tasks on my stack. After all metacity+compositor never was a targetted
use-case.

[Bug 483801] [NEW] Add support for compiz' viewports

2009-11-16 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

At the moment libwnck does not suppor compiz' concept of viewports (one
workspace split across many viewports). Only metacity's workspace-concept is
supported (multiple workspaces). In order to increase the wm-abstraction value
of libwnck, which is its main purpose of existence imo, is to add the ability
to deal with compiz' viewports and metacity's workspaces in a transparent
fashion for application developers using libwnck.

[Bug 192232] Re: wnck tooltips nitpicks

2008-02-18 Thread Mirco Müller
I'm working on this among other things.

Comments to...

1.) With that reasoning we would have to make menu-accelerators "vanish"
too, once the user learned to remember them.

2.) That's fixable and actually currently being fixed by me. Only
automatically figuring out what the workspace/viewport layout looks like
(thus hiding some of the "Go to workspace"-accelerators) is a messy
task. I will see what I can do.

3.) You're right, but this is fixed in the code already, only not yet
pushed into the public.

4.) The amount of space taken by the additional information exposed in
the tooltips is a difficult balance-act.

[Bug 192232] Re: wnck tooltips nitpicks

2008-02-20 Thread Mirco Müller
In revision libwnck-2.21.91-0ubuntu3 (still waiting for upload) I fixed
all issues, except for the width-problem. Sofar I've not found a clean
way to ensure breaking the "topic"-label of the tooltip into multiple
lines.

The initial CPU-load before the tooltip popping up is gone, exposing of
accelerators now takes into account which window-manager (compiz or
metacity) is running, what workspace-/viewport-layout is used and what
plugins are currently active (checks for cube, rotate, wall, plane, expo
and scale are added).

[Bug 141210] Re: can not change the number of workspaces

2007-09-20 Thread Mirco Müller
For the meantime you can change you workspace layout using any of the
following three methods:

1.) gconf-editor
  start gconf-editor via a gnome-terminal or via Alt-F2
in the tree-structure on the left side of the newly opened window locate...
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/
on the right side - in the scrollable view - locate entries...
vsize
hsize
change them to your liking by double-clicking the respective entry and alter
the value

2.) gconftool-2 (as an example we set up a 4:2 workspace layout)
  start a gnome-terminal
  enter the commands...
gconftool-2 -s -t int /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/vsize 4
gconftool-2 -s -t int /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize 2

3.) ccsm/compiz-config-settings-manager (not installed by default)
start ccsm via a gnome-terminal or via Alt-F2
go to the 'General' section (click the button at the top of the scrollable
view on the right)
go to the 'Desktop Size' tab
set horizontal and vertial size to your liking
_leave_ number of desktops at 1

[Bug 145020] failed visual/desktop effects still change workspace layout

2007-09-25 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

Trying to enable "Visual/Desktop Effects" on black-listed GPUs, thus
failing to start compiz, still causes the workspace-to-viewport mapping
(from metacity to compiz) to change workspace-settings.

The attempt to migrate the metacity/wnck-applet settings for workspaces
and pager-rows to compiz viewports should not be undertaken in this
case.

[Bug 141210] Re: can not change the number of workspaces

2007-09-26 Thread Mirco Müller
I extended the wnck-applet (its properties dialog) to further increase
the compiz-awareness/integration. The fix should show up in an updated
package after the beta-freeze.

You will be able to change the viewports/workspace-layout via the
properties dialog of the wnck-applet. That very dialog is now able to
adapt itself to either compiz or metacity.

[Bug 109641] developer docs for libpango are broken

2007-04-24 Thread Mirco Müller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpango1.0-doc

Steps to reproduce:

1.) On Ubuntu 7.04 open devhelp from the menu.
2.) Hit Ctrl-s to get to the search-entry widget.
3.) Enter pango_layout_set_justify
4.) On the right side of the devhelp-window for the pango_layout_set_justify()
prototype hit the link for the gboolean type.
5.) Be surprised by this error-message: "Firefox can't find the file at
/home/behdad/.local/share/gtk-doc/html/glib/glib-Basic-Types.html#gboolean."

What is actually expected:

Opon hitting the link to the type gboolean devhelp should open
