[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-05-11 Thread Martin G Miller
I maintain 2 networks with mixed ubuntu / Windows XP SP2 machines and this
problem has not been resolved for me. All of my Ubuntu machines whether they
are clean installs of 8.04 or 8.10 or 9.04, 32 or 64 bit or upgrades from
earlier versions all exhibit the failure to display or browse smb shares. The
only fix is to edit etc/samba/smb.conf:
# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names
# to IP addresses
; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

remove the leading ; from the name resolve order line and change the order of
the entries to read:
name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host

Save the file, log off and back on.

This change fixes the problem for all my machine in both networks.
The problem remains unresolved in Jaunty unless I do this. This problem
appeared suddenly in September of 2008 on 8.04 machines that had been working
normally and has persisted through 8.10 and now 9.04.

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd

2010-03-20 Thread Martin G Miller
For Dibya Sanyal...this is not a fix for the bug, just a work around so
you don't have to hard reboot.

If you hold down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding
them down, press k, you should restart x without having to reboot.

This can also be set back to the old standard of ctrl / alt / backspace
in Karmic by going to System > Preferences > Keyboard and then on the
Layouts tab, Click on "Layout Options" and you will see a list of
items. Click the triangle next to "key sequence to kill the x server"
and put a check mark in the box next to "Control + Alt + Backspace" box,
then click close.

If all this does not work, a safe way to force a reboot is to again hold
down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding them down,
press in sequence, r s e i u b. Even when the system appears totally
locked up, this "should" work.

OOPS!, I made a slight mistake in the key sequence I listed in my last post. I
meant to say the Print Screen (sysreq) key, NOT the Scroll Lock key.
That's what I get for doing a quick post here before my morning coffee.

Sorry about that

[Bug 1319186] [NEW] browsing samba shares becomes unresponsive over time

2014-05-13 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit

nautilus version: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9

I have saved as bookmarks several samba shares from a Windows machine on
my office network to my Ubuntu 14.04 workstations (Windows is host,
Ubuntu is client). I switch to a new workspace and open the saved
share. It displays normally. I switch to another workspace and open a
different saved samba share. It also works normally. I then switch to
a 3rd workspace where I am using various programs. If you wait 15
minutes and change back to the workspaces where the opened shares exist,
they have become unresponsive. Clicking on any files or folders will
will cause a delay followed by the open window becoming unresponsive
with the only choice being to close the window and then reopen the share
from a right click of the files menu in the launcher. The share will
again open and work normally until you again change workspaces and wait
about 15 minutes, after which it again becomes unresponsive.

This behaviour never happend with Ubuntu 10.04 or 12.04, which I was
using before. Every machine in my office which all have a fresh install
of 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 behave the same way.

As an experiment, I installed Nemo on 1 of my machines and instead of
becoming unresponsive, the browser window turns grey for 15 seconds, but
then starts to work normally.

The expected behaviour would be to have the open browser windows
continue to work without delay after switching workspaces and coming
back to them after a period of 15 minutes.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-06-18 Thread Martin G Miller
I have now helped a friend install 32 bit Jaunty on his office network.
All work stations are clean installs of Jaunty that need to browse his
file server which is Windows server 2003. He also has some printers
attached to and shared by his Ubuntu work stations that need to print
from the file server. With a stock install, all the network browsing
issues are present, as well as many intermittent shared printing
failures. If I edit smb.conf as I noted earlier, to change the resolve
order, every thing works correctly. This now confirms that every
machine I have installed on 3 separate networks in 3 different towns all
exhibit this problem. A total of more than 12 machines. None of them
work correctly out of the box.

One piece of the puzzle is that both of the ISP's involved with all
these machines are using DNS redirection. The problem I originally had
coincided exactly with the day my ISP started using redirection on my 2
networks. This does not seem to affect the kde network browser and does
not affect the network browser in Windows XP pro SP2 or Windows Server
2003. It does adversely affect network browsing in Nautilus.

Something about DNS redirection causes network browsing failures in
Nautilus.

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd

2009-06-19 Thread Martin G Miller
This problem seems to be brand &/or DMA speed specific for the DVD
drive. I have an Asus DVD-E616P3 with firmware 1.06 that will freeze
the system every time with audio CD's. When I swap it out for an old
Pioneer DVD-500M or TSSTcorp DVD burner, I have no problems. The main
difference is the Asus is DMA 100 which freezes, the Pioneer is DMA 66
which is good and the TSST drive is DMA 33 which is also good. Perhaps
it has something to do with the transfer speed of the drives? An
Optiarc SATA DVD burner in the same system works fine.

I also have another computer with a fresh Jaunty install with an Asus
DVD-E616P2 with firmware 1.08 that will not mount audio cd's. At least
it does not freeze the system. This drive is also DMA 100. A Plextor
Px-716A Firmware 1.06 in the same machine that runs at DMA 66 accepts
audio cd's just fine.

So, could it be something about brasero and PATA UDMA 100 optical
drives?

[Bug 307421] [NEW] deskbar fails to grey screen after closing window

2008-12-12 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

Running Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit
deskbar 2.24.1

I would expect that deskbar would continue to work after closing a
search or closing the search box even if not doing a search by any
standard window closing method, ie, hitting escape key or clicking on
the "x" in the upper corner of the window.

What happened instead is that if I use deskbar, I must search for
something and then use the search results, otherwise, deskbar fails to a
blank screen the next time it is run if the window is closed by clicking
on the "x" or using alt/F4.

For example:
1) do a search and find something useful. Click on the found item and view the
results. > All is fine and deskbar will continue to work.

2) do a search and whether it finds something useful or not, do nothing
and close the search by clicking on the "x" in the upper right corner of
the search window or using alt/F4. > Deskbar will no longer work, it
displays a grey screen on subsequent runs.

3) Activate deskbar either from alt F3 or by clicking on the panel icon.
Don't enter anything in the search field and close the search by
clicking on the "x" or using alt/F4. > Deskbar will no longer work, it
displays a grey screen on subsequent runs.

4) If deskbar is close by using the esc key or alt/F3, it continues to
work normally.

5) Removing deskbar from the panel and adding it back again, restores
it's functionality unless the above conditions are met.

6) Compiz has no effect on the bug, it happens whether desktop effects
are on or off.

As a work around, right click the deskbar applet, select preferences, and go to

Put a check mark in the option: Window Behavior "Stick to panel". Click Close
at the bottom.
To close the dialog box that deskbar creates when set this way, either hit the
Esc key or click on the deskbar applet again.

I have found as long as deskbar does not create a separate detached
window, the bug does not manifest.

[Bug 254309] Re: UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy

2008-10-15 Thread Martin G Miller
Since filing this bug report I have changed motherboards and cpu. I am
now running as ASUS M3N78 Pro mobo with an AMD phenom triple core & 4
gig of ram (3.5 GB detected as I am running 32 bit). This mobo does not
see the UPS at all. lsusb does not show the device as being detected.
I have tried both Ubuntu 8.04.1 and the 8.10 beta and neither release is
aware of the UPS. I suspect there may be a problem in the USB port on
the UPS itself as I have tested the USB ports on the computer and they
seem to have no problems working with anything else that I plug into
them. I do see an error message on boot up that says "1-0:1.0 unable to
enumerate device on USB port 3". I assume that is the UPS as everything
else works normally. If you have any suggestions to try to get the
system to detect the UPS, I will try them.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-10-27 Thread Martin G Miller
Here are some workarounds that I have been using on 2 networks with
mixed Ubuntu and winxp sp2 machines.

Workaround #1) If you want to stay all gnome...
gksu gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf (you need to be sudo to do this) scroll to the
area that says:
# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names
# to IP addresses
; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

and remove the leading ; from the name resolve order line and change the order
of the entries to read:
name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host

Save the file, log off and back on.

You will find the first time per session that you browse the network, it
will take a while for the shares to show up, but subsequent browses will
be fast.

Workaround #2) If you don't mind installing some kde software.

sudo apt-get install smb4k

It will put itself into Applications > Accesories > Smb4K

This uses kde browsing conventions, but seems to work almost instantly.

Workaround #3) As noted in earlier posts, if you put smb:/"numerical ip
address" in the nautilus browser window, it will work instantly, but
don't make a mistake because an unresolvable ip address may cause a
hang.

Hope this helps a few people till the bug is finally resolved.

One last follow up. Although I have enabled workaround #1 above on all

Places menu in the top panel and they open instantly.

[Bug 73835] Re: evolution slow to display images

2008-10-29 Thread Martin G Miller
It was somewhat improved in hardy. Since upgrading to Intrepid, the pictures
load much faster and the delete button will work before they have all loaded.
I can also switch between e-mails while pictures are loading without problems.
It appears this is fixed for me with the upgrade to Intrepid.

Another image problem I was having involved only 1 source that I get
emails from several times a week that contain several embedded photos.
Often some of the photos would not load at all, only an "x" would
appear. If I clicked on the "X", it would open Firefox on the page the
picture was linked from and it would display. This was very random and
only affected some of the pictures on the page and only from this one
source.

Since upgrading to Intrepid this is also resolved.

Thank you for your excellent work.

[Bug 403184] [NEW] weather applet removed intercity locations

2009-07-22 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Since upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04, the weather panel applet version
2.26.1 no longer lists intercity locations. For example, I live in the
United States in New York State and if I clicked on New York City
location, there used to be a drop down with choices including Kennedy
Airport which is reasonably close to where I live. Now, there are no
choices under New York City which is over 35 miles away and has very
different weather from where I live, which in Long Beach, NY.

Is there any way to get it to read additional weather locations?
Ideally, one for my own city of Long Beach. I know there are online
weather stations here because in Windows, if I install weather bug, it
can get data from my local High School, which is only a few hundred
yards away.

To summarize:

Ubuntu release:
Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit

Package version:
gnome-applets v2.26.1-0ubuntu1 the weather applet

Expected action:
Should be able to retrieve weather data from nearby location as in Ubuntu 8.10

What happened instead:
Fewer choices of places to draw weather data from, places that were listed in
8.10 are no
longer listed in 9.04

Wish List:
Obtain weather data from known online source in my home town (Long Beach High

[Bug 463281] [NEW] system log viewer looking for wrong files

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

After upgrading Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit to 9.10 32 bit the log file viewer
exhibits an error in looking for log files that have been renamed.

Upon running Log File Viewer, the application becomes unresponsive for several
minutes while displaying the error message:

Upgraded from 32 bit jaunty to 32 bit Karmic. Dvd movies used to play
fine with Totem in Jaunty, now they fail to play and Totem grays out and
becomes unresponsive. I have to force quit it. I can play dvd movies
successfully with vlc, which I have made the default dvd movie player
for now.

Other then dvd movies, totem also fails to play audio cd's and gives the
message:
An error occurred
Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.

Totem will play all the media files that are saved to my hard drive,
just nothing from optical discs.

If I select rhythmbox to play audio cd's, it works as expected.

I have another machine that is a clean 32 bit install of Karmic and it exhibits
the same behavior.
Ubuntu-restricted-extras and medibuntu w32codecs and libdvdcss2 are all
installed.

[Bug 790023] [NEW] send to mail recipient option not present on right click of file in 11.04 Unity desktop

2011-05-29 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In all previous versions of Ubuntu/Gnome, right clicking a file gives a
context menu including the choice to "send to mail recipient". In 11.04
with the Unity DE, in both 32 and 64 bit versions, this option is
missing. The only choice seems to be a window that sends the file to
CD/DVD creator, instant message, bluetooth or removable disk. The
option of sending to an email recipient is gone.

Ubuntu 11.04 both 32 bit and 64 bit
Nautilus version: 1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13 (32 bit)

What I expected to happen:
Right click a file and the context menu allows you to quickly select Send to
email recipient.

What happened instead:
The right click context menu entry opens a window that only offers to send the
file to CD/DVD Creator

[Bug 790023] Re: send to mail recipient option not present on right click of file in 11.04 Unity desktop

2011-06-10 Thread Martin G Miller
I have found a work around on the Ubuntu forums for this problem, but I
prefer to have the bug fixed through the normal update process. I have
not tried this myself yet. However, this may provide a valuable clue as
to the source of the bug.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10753508&postcount=5

The following is a quote from the above link:
Looks like nautilus-sendto is trying to use older versions of libraries.
Running the following fixed it for me:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libebook-1.2.so.10 /usr/lib/libebook-1.2.so.9

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libedataserver-1.2.so.14

[Bug 90524] Re: Time-admin's "Synchronize Now" should be enabled even in NTP mode

2010-11-07 Thread Martin G Miller
This is still a problem in 64 bit Lucid. I noticed my clock was off by
several minutes and went into system > Admin > Time & Date to set it and
discovered that it was set to manual. I set it to use a time server on
the internet and when I was done, it still displayed the wrong time.
There is no "synchronize now" button, either grayed out or otherwise. I
tried logging off and on, but that made no difference. On going back to
Time & Date, I noticed it was set back to Manual mode and again set it
synch with time servers, but no change happened. I finally set the
clock manually, but don't know if it's going to stay synced with correct
time of not.

[Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-03-14 Thread Martin G Miller
As a work around, I am using Shotwell to import from my camera. It does
a good job and allows me to erase from the camera after importing. I am
not crazy about the way it organizes the imported pictures by date,
several layers deep. I just tell it to save to my desktop and then move
the pictures around to where I want them from there. I still use gthumb
as my basic photo editor when I don't want to fire up gimp. For actual
picture managment, I use Picasa 3.0 installed from the Google testing
repositories. This is a truly amazing application.

OK, I got it to work. Based on your comments, I changed the command in the

more.

[Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-03-14 Thread Martin G Miller
Paolo, you need to right click Applications the select "Edit Menus". In the
resulting window, select Graphics on the left side and then on the right side,
right click gThumb Photo Import Tool. Select Properties and in the resulting
window, change the command in the "Command" box to read:
sh -c 'gphoto2 ; exec gthumb --import-photos'
It's easiest to just blank out the old command and paste in the one I wrote
above.
Once the new command is in the box, just click "Close" and close out of the
menu editor.

If your camera is already connected, disconnect it. Then the next time
you plug it in and set it to upload, everything should work as before.
Some of the choices in the new version of the import tool have been
moved to the "Preferences" button, so look at that once it runs.

[Bug 451610] [NEW] Evolution resize view settings not persistent

2009-10-14 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

On a clean install of 32 bit Ubuntu karmic beta updated through 14
October, 2009, Evolution does not remember resizing its view settings.
Using 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Steps to reproduce:
Open Evolution, click to make window full screen.
Click View > Preview > "Show message preview" is checked and select "Vertical
View".

Arrange the sizes of the areas to your preference. The Inbox on the
left side is made a little wider, the messages area has to be made much
wider, making the message preview area smaller.

If you minimize and then maximze the window, all is as it should be.

If you close Evolution and reopen it, it will remember the size of the
inbox area, but the messages area is back to too narrow to read and must
be resized again.

This behaviour persists every time Evolution is closed and restarted.

Expected behaviour is to have the application remember resized display areas
when application is restarted.
What happened instead is the sizes of some display areas are reset to (too
small) default settings on application restart.

I have attached 2 screen shots to demonstrate the bug.

I am now updated to the release candidate through October 23, 2009.

Gthumb will now work correctly 2 times after a reboot. 3rd and
subsequent attempts default back to the error as noted above.

Logging off and back on does not help. The error appears on the first
attempt. Only rebooting the machine will restore the expected behavior
for 2 connections of the camera before it fails.

[Bug 637702] Re: Prompted to unlock keyring twice on log in

2011-01-27 Thread Martin G Miller
I also have this issue after upgrading 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10. I am
asked for login keyring 4 times. It should be noted that you should
only do this if its your own machine at home and you are not worried
about others getting access to it. You are about to unencrypt your
passwords if you follow the instructions below.

As a temporary fix: System > Preferences > Passwords & Encryption Keys.
In the Passwords tab, mine shows Passwords:login. Do not click to open
its drop down list. Simply right click the words Passwords:login and
then select "change password". You should see the same window that pops
up every time you try to restart your machine. Enter your current
password in the "Old Password" field and then hit the tab key twice to
move focus to the "Password" and "Confirm" fields, leaving each one
blank. When you click "OK", it will ask "Store passwords Unencrypted?"
You can then click on the "Use Unsafe Storage" button and that should do
it.

[Bug 713838] [NEW] gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive

2011-02-05 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

After upgrading 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10 gthumb no longer loads pictures from my
canon SD550 digital camera when connected by USB.
Version of gthumb is 3:2.11.3-2build1
What was expected is a normal gthumb import session which reads the camera and
presents the pictures for importing.
What happened instead:
You get a popup window which says "Could not load the folder DBus error
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "QueryInfo" with signature
"aysus" on interface "org.gtk.vfs.Mount" doesn't exist".

After closing that popup, gthumb then loads a pictures folder that is on an
sata hard drive that is mounted and used as my backup drive. The drop down
list in the picture importer only shows "backup" as the source of the photos.

I have tried changing the command for gthumb importer from:
sh -c 'gvfs-mount -u ~/.gvfs/gphoto2*; exec gthumb --import-photos'

to:
sh -c 'gvfs-mount -s gphoto2 ; sleep 3 ; exec gthumb --import-photos'

as this was needed to get it to work in 10.04, but it has no effect in
10.10.

If I take the memory card out of the camera and put it in an external
card reader, gthumb will import the pictures as expected.

Shotwell, the new default picture import application in 10.10, has no
problems seeing and importing photos from the camera.

[Bug 713847] [NEW] nautilus closes on cut/paste of file over VPN

2011-02-05 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded from 10.04
nautilus: Installed: 1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.3
What I expected:
I open a VPN tunnel from my home to my office every day. I then open a saved
bookmark of a folder that contains several subfolders on the remote (Windows XP
Pro sp2) server. I then scan documents on the Ubuntu computer to pdf format
which I then cut and paste to the appropriate folder on the server. As i cut
and paste to the various sub folders, the files transfer to the destination
folders without incident.
I have been doing this for a few years without problems.

What happens instead:
Cut and paste of file or files results in most of the files being transferred
to the destination followed by the nautilus destination window closing. The
VPN is still open and shows mounted on my desktop. I have to reopen the saved
bookmark to get back to the area I want to cut and paste the next document(s)
into. This happens every time.

If I do a copy/paste instead of a cut/paste, the destination window
remains open.

I have also found that if I try to navigate into subfolders, I can go
into them, but often when backing back out, the window will close the
same way it does on a cut/paste.

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-10-04 Thread Martin G Miller
I have a Canon SD 550 which Ubuntu recognizes by its European name,
Digital Ixus 750 (PTP mode). I did experience this bug for a while, but
it has been working correctly for some time now in Jaunty.

The problem is a regression in 32 bit Karmic alpha 6. I have to unmount
the camera from the desktop before importing the pictures with gthumb or
I get the "device locked..." dialog. It does work correctly if I try to
use Fspot as the import tool, but I don't use that app to manage my
pictures.

I am currently downloading the Karmic 32 bit desktop beta and will try
that to see if the regression has been resolved.

[Bug 442448] Re: gthumb photo import tool fails, error in io-library

2009-10-06 Thread Martin G Miller
After a reboot, the system did work correctly 1 time. This is the
output of the commands you requested after the first successful camera
plug in:

ka...@upstairs:~$ gphoto-2 --auto-detect
No command 'gphoto-2' found, did you mean:
Command 'gphoto2' from package 'gphoto2' (universe)
gphoto-2: command not found
ka...@upstairs:~$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
The program 'gphoto2' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gphoto2
gphoto2: command not found
ka...@upstairs:~$
ka...@upstairs:~$
ka...@upstairs:~$
ka...@upstairs:~$
ka...@upstairs:~$ gvfs-mount -l

  Type: GProxyDrive (GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu)
Drive(5): AFT PRO - 9 SD

Following this, all subsequent attempts at plugging in the camera failed
as noted in original bug report. Here is the output after a failed
camera plug in:

ka...@upstairs:~$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
The program 'gphoto2' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gphoto2
gphoto2: command not found

[Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted

2009-02-22 Thread Martin G Miller
This has been an ongoing problem for me for years. The list presented
makes no sense in terms of the order the apps are presented. Also,
since there are multiple entries for many apps, why are they not listed
together? They are scattered at random throughout the list.

If "the list is sorted using the mimetype associations to list the most
likely applications that should be used first, that's not a bug" were
true, all the duplicate entries should be listed together, but they are
not. For example, Brasero Disk Burning is listed 5 times scattered
through the list.

Duplicate entries are created every time you open the menu editor and change
something. They are found in
~/.local/share/applications so you can weed them out. This is a separate bug.

I am mainly concerned with the listed order of apps.

Please reopen this. It's not a feature, it's a bug. There should be a
choice to list the apps alphabetically.

[Bug 254309] Re: UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy

2009-04-05 Thread Martin G Miller
I am still using the same ASUS M3N78Pro mobo and with Intrepid 32 bit
patched up to current, the UPS is detected and functions normally over
USB. I have no lockups and all is good. The panel icon does say the
system is running off backup power and the battery state is 100%, where
I would expect it to say it is running off wall power with battery state
of 100%, otherwise I'm happy.

Here is the output of lsusb:
ma...@tux:~$ lsusb

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 09ae:2007 Tripp Lite
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The entry for Tripp Lite is the UPS. I have 3 of these UPS's and when I was
having the problem, I tried it will all of them and none of them were detected.

Whatever the problem was, it was fixed in some patch right around the
release of Intrepid final.

As a final note, I have another machine in my office still running
8.04.2 and it does not see an attached USB UPS (also a tripplite) at
all. At least it doesn't lock up. When I get a chance, I will do lsusb
on it to see what shows.

Thank you to all the hardworking people who help to make Ubuntu and
Linux great.

[Bug 489620] Re: Fspot import lacks ability to delete pictures from camera, easily choose save to destination and does not offer to exit when done

2009-11-30 Thread Martin G Miller
Gnome bugzilla Bug 321596 has been open for over 4 years now. It is a
show stopper for using f-spot. With the intention of increased reliance
on f-spot now that gimp is being removed, this becomes a serious issue.
I have been using gthumb to import and picasa to manage pictures for
years because f-spot just had too many glitches. Is there any way
upstream can be nudged along on this issue?

Since the default applications are being tweaked, maybe it's time to
consider changing the default photo management application. Could
digikam be modified to look like a gnome application and be used
instead? I know it will work, but kde apps look "wrong" in a gnome
environment.

Development in f-spot is stagnant, digikam seems to offer more features
through plugins frequently. Rather then reinventing the wheel or trying
to get the uncooperative f-spot maintainers to do something, perhaps
having a gnome port of digikam would be the best solution.

[Bug 158119] Re: Photo Import from Canon IXUS 30/Powershot SD200 failed

2008-04-01 Thread Martin G Miller
I have a Canon SD 550 which works perfectly in Gutsy.
Using the Live CD Hardy Beta daily builds from 03-25-2008 and 04-01-2008.
When I plug in the camera with Hardy beta, no software is triggered. If I run
F-spot or have previously installed and run gthumb, it does show the camera in
the drop down as an import source. If I select the camera, the system
instantly freezes with no response to keyboard or mouse. Only recourse is
forced reboot from restart switch on the tower.
As I recall, it worked properly up through Hardy Beta 03-21-2008 Live CD. The
bug started with the Beta release on 03-25-2008.

I have tried this in 3 different computers and they all behave the same
way.

[Bug 236778] Re: gnome-appearance-properties causes CPU spike in Hardy

2008-06-07 Thread Martin G Miller
As Mike Rooney said:

"I *think* what happened is that the original problem appeared in hardy-
proposed and this bug was filed. Regardless of this bug the -proposed
was pushed to updates, and as such people are commenting about having
the issue without -proposed (I can confirm I have this issue without
-proposed). THEN a fix for this issue was put in -proposed, so now
proposed is fixed, while it is broken in an updated Hardy (reversed from
initially when the bug was filed). Does that make sense? Can anyone
confirm?"

Confirmed. This is exactly my situation. I have never had -proposed
enabled, only -backports. The problem still exists for me. I have not
tried to enable -proposed in an effort to fix it.

[Bug 254309] [NEW] UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy

2008-08-02 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Version of Ubuntu: 8.04.1

Version of package: gnome-power-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu4

What I expected to happen: The panel icon should report state of
battery charge, but tell me I am running off the wall. It also should
not affect the stability of the system.

What happened: The panel icon said I was running off the battery and
the system became unstable resulting in hard freezes.

I am running Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC
2008 i686 GNU/Linux, as well as all latest packages.
My mobo is Asus A7n-8XE-Deluxe. AMD 64 3200+ 2 gig ram.
I purchased a new Tripplite 1000W UPS that has a USB port to allow the OS to
monitor the state of the UPS.
After plugging it in on a fresh boot, the power management applet had a new tab
devoted to the the UPS and an icon appeared in my top panel telling me the
system was running on battery power with a charge of 100%. This was not
entirely true as the UPS was plugged in and it should have been running of the
wall, not the internal battery.

Immediately following this, the system became unstable resulting in hard
lockups after only a few mins. of use. I tried disabling compiz and
made sure cool 'n quiet was disabled in my BIOS. I also tried running
the system off a live CD for Hardy 8.04.1 and had the same freezing even
with no applications running. This is a hard freeze with no mouse or
keyboard input possible. I tried both usb and ps2 keyboards and they
all lock up. Only recourse is to hit the reset button on the tower.
The system logs in fine and freezes anywhere from 15 seconds to 10
minutes into the session.

After shutting down and unplugging the USB cable from the UPS and
restarting. The system has returned to normal. No more freezing.

I am now running Hardy final. My camera is a Canon SD 550. Gthumb identifies

Gthumb now functions normally to import and delete pictures from the camera.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-09-25 Thread Martin G Miller
I am running Ubuntu 8.04.1 32 bit and this bug hit me suddenly this
morning. Up till now, I was able to browse my office networks smb
shares without difficulty. As of this morning, none of them work. All
4 of my ubuntu workstations are affected. I have saved bookmarks to
places on the network that stopped working. I found that I had to
change the network path, for example, from smb://server/pictures to
smb://10.0.0.5/pictures that finally got all of them working again. I
am still unable to browse my network with the Places > Network GUI. It
shows the network and then the workgroup, but nothing beyond that. It
eventually times out. I was not planning to upgrade my office machines
to 8.10, preferring to stay with the LTS version, but if I need to
upgrade to fix this, I will. This is a nasty regression that needs to
be fixed.

smb.conf worked in all 6 machines. It does take about 44 seconds for the
Places > Network applet to appear, but after that, browsing the network
is fine. I also had to log off and back on to get it to work.

Thank you.

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-10-28 Thread Martin G Miller
I am running AMD 64 with 32 bit Gutsy upgraded from Feisty. I also take about
45 seconds to go from login to desktop. I have 2 gig ram and Nvidia 7800 GT
running nvidia-glx-new drivers. Here is the out put of 2 dmesg greps:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep audit
[ 38.451889] audit: initializing netlink socket (disabled)
[ 38.451902] audit(1193268681.132:1): initialized
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep error
[ 37.605494] ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml not
found.
[ 68.340902] VIA 82xx Modem: probe of :00:11.6 failed with error -13
[ 78.468779] powernow-k8: BIOS error - no PSB or ACPI _PSS objects

dmesg | grep failure returned no output, so the primary security module does
not seem to be an issue for me.
In fact, here is the output of dmesg searches for primary security and module:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep failure
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep primary
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep security
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep module
[ 66.544455] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

I know it's off topic, but I wonder if the <> message is a clue as to why I can't do S3
sleep on this machine.

[Bug 73586] nautilus fails in sudo mode

2006-11-28 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After upgrading Dapper to Edgy, invoking nautilus using the command
gksudo nautilus will allow some browsing, but after a short time, the
screen will lock. Copying and pasting files may work once or twice, but
will also fail quickly with a locked screen requiring a force quit of
nautilus. Running Nautilus as normal user is not affected. Other
running programs are not affected. This was not a problem in Dapper.
The problem seems to manifest more quickly when browsing/copying
directories and files owned by root.

2006-11-28 Thread Martin G Miller
Only the window with the gksudo nautilus session running becomes
unresponsive. Everything else works. It does not require a restart. I
will attempt to install and run the debug packages you requested.

[Bug 73586] Re: nautilus fails in sudo mode

2006-11-28 Thread Martin G Miller
OK, I have run the debug as you requested. After the screen became
unresponsive requiring a force quit, (gdb) produced the following:
Program exited normally.
(gdb) Quit
(gdb) thread apply all bt
(gdb)

Here is the output of the entire session in the terminal window:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo gdb nautilus
Password:

The warning about the DBUS connection is something I always see when running
nautilus in sudo mode. It was there in Dapper also. It did not start with
this problem.

[Bug 73835] evolution slow to display images

2006-11-29 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since upgrading from Dapper to Edgy, 32 bit. I have noticed Evolution
is very slow to display images in emails. The more graphically rich the
email is, the longer it takes to display. Ads are the worst offender
here. The worst part is that while it is trying to download the images
for display the program becomes almost unresponsive to further mouse
clicks. You cannot click another email to switch to it without
experiencing very long delays of up to 15 -20 seconds. You can't click
the button to delete the email that is taking all the time because the
button is grayed out till it finishes loading the email. This behavior
was not present in Dapper.

[Bug 74214] deskbar document searches not included in recent documents list

2006-12-02 Thread Martin G Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

This behavior was displayed in a system upgraded from Dapper to Edgy 32 bit.
If a search for filenames is done by deskbar that results in an existing
document file in .odt format, that file will not appear in the Places>Recent
Documents list, even though you opened the document in Open Office Writer, made
changes and saved it.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Alt/F3 to invoke deskbar
2) type in part of document name
3) In search window, double click the found document to open it in Open Office
Writer.
4) Make changes to document and save it. Then close writer.
5) Look in Places>Recent Documents list.
6) The document will not be listed.

Expected Behavior:
After opening, modifying and saving a document, it should appear in the Recent
Documents list.

[Bug 73586] Re: nautilus fails in sudo mode

Yes, the lock problem occurred during this debug session. I had to
click the close window button several times until a force quit dialog
appeared. Debug did not seem to find anything unusual though.

[Bug 73586] Re: nautilus fails in sudo mode

2006-12-08 Thread Martin G Miller
I just tried for several minutes to reproduce the problem in debug mode
and could not. I navigated throughout my file system to areas owned by
both user and root. I copied and pasted files owned by root to my user
desktop and did not experience any unusual behavior. When I first
reported this bug, I could reproduce it within seconds. I did install
more than 30 updates in the last 2 days. Perhaps something in them has
fixed this problem?
