[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.
I maintain 2 networks with mixed ubuntu / Windows XP SP2 machines and this problem has not been resolved for me. All of my Ubuntu machines whether they are clean installs of 8.04 or 8.10 or 9.04, 32 or 64 bit or upgrades from earlier versions all exhibit the failure to display or browse smb shares. The only fix is to edit etc/samba/smb.conf: # What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names # to IP addresses ; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast remove the leading ; from the name resolve order line and change the order of the entries to read: name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host Save the file, log off and back on. This change fixes the problem for all my machine in both networks. The problem remains unresolved in Jaunty unless I do this. This problem appeared suddenly in September of 2008 on 8.04 machines that had been working normally and has persisted through 8.10 and now 9.04. -- nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207072 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 367767] Re: the system freeze when I insert an audio cd
For Dibya Sanyal...this is not a fix for the bug, just a work around so you don't have to hard reboot. If you hold down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding them down, press k, you should restart x without having to reboot. This can also be set back to the old standard of ctrl / alt / backspace in Karmic by going to System > Preferences > Keyboard and then on the Layouts tab, Click on "Layout Options" and you will see a list of items. Click the triangle next to "key sequence to kill the x server" and put a check mark in the box next to "Control + Alt + Backspace" box, then click close. If all this does not work, a safe way to force a reboot is to again hold down the alt and scroll lock (sysreq) keys and while holding them down, press in sequence, r s e i u b. Even when the system appears totally locked up, this "should" work. -- the system freeze when I insert an audio cd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1319186] [NEW] browsing samba shares becomes unresponsive over time
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit nautilus version: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9 I have saved as bookmarks several samba shares from a Windows machine on my office network to my Ubuntu 14.04 workstations (Windows is host, Ubuntu is client). I switch to a new workspace and open the saved share. It displays normally. I switch to another workspace and open a different saved samba share. It also works normally. I then switch to a 3rd workspace where I am using various programs. If you wait 15 minutes and change back to the workspaces where the opened shares exist, they have become unresponsive. Clicking on any files or folders will will cause a delay followed by the open window becoming unresponsive with the only choice being to close the window and then reopen the share from a right click of the files menu in the launcher. The share will again open and work normally until you again change workspaces and wait about 15 minutes, after which it again becomes unresponsive. This behaviour never happend with Ubuntu 10.04 or 12.04, which I was using before. Every machine in my office which all have a fresh install of 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 behave the same way. As an experiment, I installed Nemo on 1 of my machines and instead of becoming unresponsive, the browser window turns grey for 15 seconds, but then starts to work normally. The expected behaviour would be to have the open browser windows continue to work without delay after switching workspaces and coming back to them after a period of 15 minutes. [Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.
I have now helped a friend install 32 bit Jaunty on his office network. All work stations are clean installs of Jaunty that need to browse his file server which is Windows server 2003. He also has some printers attached to and shared by his Ubuntu work stations that need to print from the file server. With a stock install, all the network browsing issues are present, as well as many intermittent shared printing failures. If I edit smb.conf as I noted earlier, to change the resolve order, every thing works correctly. This now confirms that every machine I have installed on 3 separate networks in 3 different towns all exhibit this problem. A total of more than 12 machines. None of them work correctly out of the box. One piece of the puzzle is that both of the ISP's involved with all these machines are using DNS redirection. The problem I originally had coincided exactly with the day my ISP started using redirection on my 2 networks. This does not seem to affect the kde network browser and does not affect the network browser in Windows XP pro SP2 or Windows Server 2003. It does adversely affect network browsing in Nautilus. Something about DNS redirection causes network browsing failures in Nautilus.
This problem seems to be brand &/or DMA speed specific for the DVD drive. I have an Asus DVD-E616P3 with firmware 1.06 that will freeze the system every time with audio CD's. When I swap it out for an old Pioneer DVD-500M or TSSTcorp DVD burner, I have no problems. The main difference is the Asus is DMA 100 which freezes, the Pioneer is DMA 66 which is good and the TSST drive is DMA 33 which is also good. Perhaps it has something to do with the transfer speed of the drives? An Optiarc SATA DVD burner in the same system works fine. I also have another computer with a fresh Jaunty install with an Asus DVD-E616P2 with firmware 1.08 that will not mount audio cd's. At least it does not freeze the system. This drive is also DMA 100. A Plextor Px-716A Firmware 1.06 in the same machine that runs at DMA 66 accepts audio cd's just fine. So, could it be something about brasero and PATA UDMA 100 optical drives? -- the system freeze when I insert an audio cd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 254309] Re: UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy
Since filing this bug report I have changed motherboards and cpu. I am now running as ASUS M3N78 Pro mobo with an AMD phenom triple core & 4 gig of ram (3.5 GB detected as I am running 32 bit). This mobo does not see the UPS at all. lsusb does not show the device as being detected. I have tried both Ubuntu 8.04.1 and the 8.10 beta and neither release is aware of the UPS. I suspect there may be a problem in the USB port on the UPS itself as I have tested the USB ports on the computer and they seem to have no problems working with anything else that I plug into them. I do see an error message on boot up that says "1-0:1.0 unable to enumerate device on USB port 3". I assume that is the UPS as everything else works normally. [Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.
Here are some workarounds that I have been using on 2 networks with mixed Ubuntu and winxp sp2 machines. Workaround #1) If you want to stay all gnome... gksu gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf (you need to be sudo to do this) scroll to the area that says: # What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names # to IP addresses ; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast and remove the leading ; from the name resolve order line and change the order of the entries to read: name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host Save the file, log off and back on. You will find the first time per session that you browse the network, it will take a while for the shares to show up, but subsequent browses will be fast. Workaround #2) If you don't mind installing some kde software. sudo apt-get install smb4k It will put itself into Applications > Accesories > Smb4K This uses kde browsing conventions, but seems to work almost instantly. Workaround #3) As noted in earlier posts, if you put smb:/"numerical ip address" in the nautilus browser window, it will work instantly, but don't make a mistake because an unresolvable ip address may cause a hang. [Bug 73835] Re: evolution slow to display images
It was somewhat improved in hardy. Since upgrading to Intrepid, the pictures load much faster and the delete button will work before they have all loaded. I can also switch between e-mails while pictures are loading without problems. It appears this is fixed for me with the upgrade to Intrepid. Another image problem I was having involved only 1 source that I get emails from several times a week that contain several embedded photos. Often some of the photos would not load at all, only an "x" would appear. If I clicked on the "X", it would open Firefox on the page the picture was linked from and it would display. [Bug 90524] Re: Time-admin's "Synchronize Now" should be enabled even in NTP mode
This is still a problem in 64 bit Lucid. I noticed my clock was off by several minutes and went into system > Admin > Time & Date to set it and discovered that it was set to manual. I set it to use a time server on the internet and when I was done, it still displayed the wrong time. There is no "synchronize now" button, either grayed out or otherwise. I tried logging off and on, but that made no difference. On going back to Time & Date, I noticed it was set back to Manual mode and again set it synch with time servers, but no change happened. [Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive
As a work around, I am using Shotwell to import from my camera. It does a good job and allows me to erase from the camera after importing. I am not crazy about the way it organizes the imported pictures by date, several layers deep. I just tell it to save to my desktop and then move the pictures around to where I want them from there. I still use gthumb as my basic photo editor when I don't want to fire up gimp. For actual picture managment, I use Picasa 3.0 installed from the Google testing repositories. [Bug 713838] Re: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive
Paolo, you need to right click Applications the select "Edit Menus". In the resulting window, select Graphics on the left side and then on the right side, right click gThumb Photo Import Tool. Select Properties and in the resulting window, change the command in the "Command" box to read: sh -c 'gphoto2 ; exec gthumb --import-photos' It's easiest to just blank out the old command and paste in the one I wrote above. Once the new command is in the box, just click "Close" and close out of the menu editor. If your camera is already connected, disconnect it. Then the next time you plug it in and set it to upload, everything should work as before. Some of the choices in the new version of the import tool have been moved to the "Preferences" button, so look at that once it runs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gthumb in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/713838 Title: gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 451610] [NEW] Evolution resize view settings not persistent
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution On a clean install of 32 bit Ubuntu karmic beta updated through 14 October, 2009, Evolution does not remember resizing its view settings. Using 1680 x 1050 resolution. Steps to reproduce: Open Evolution, click to make window full screen. Click View > Preview > "Show message preview" is checked and select "Vertical View". Arrange the sizes of the areas to your preference. The Inbox on the left side is made a little wider, the messages area has to be made much wider, making the message preview area smaller. If you minimize and then maximze the window, all is as it should be. If you close Evolution and reopen it, it will remember the size of the inbox area, but the messages area is back to too narrow to read and must be resized again. This behaviour persists every time Evolution is closed and restarted. Expected behaviour is to have the application remember resized display areas when application is restarted. What happened instead is the sizes of some display areas are reset to (too small) default settings on application restart. I have attached 2 screen shots to demonstrate the bug. [Bug 713838] [NEW] gthumb fails camera import and then loads an attached hard drive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gthumb After upgrading 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10 gthumb no longer loads pictures from my canon SD550 digital camera when connected by USB. Version of gthumb is 3:2.11.3-2build1 What was expected is a normal gthumb import session which reads the camera and presents the pictures for importing. What happened instead: You get a popup window which says "Could not load the folder DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "QueryInfo" with signature "aysus" on interface "org.gtk.vfs.Mount" doesn't exist". After closing that popup, gthumb then loads a pictures folder that is on an sata hard drive that is mounted and used as my backup drive. [Bug 250266] Re: "open with" application list has duplicates and is unsorted
This has been an ongoing problem for me for years. The list presented makes no sense in terms of the order the apps are presented. If "the list is sorted using the mimetype associations to list the most likely applications that should be used first, that's not a bug" were true, all the duplicate entries should be listed together, but they are not. For example, Brasero Disk Burning is listed 5 times scattered through the list. Duplicate entries are created every time you open the menu editor and change something. They are found in ~/.local/share/applications so you can weed them out. This is a separate bug. I am mainly concerned with the listed order of apps. Please reopen this. Gnome bugzilla Bug 321596 has been open for over 4 years now. It is a show stopper for using f-spot. With the intention of increased reliance on f-spot now that gimp is being removed, this becomes a serious issue. I have been using gthumb to import and picasa to manage pictures for years because f-spot just had too many glitches. Is there any way upstream can be nudged along on this issue? Since the default applications are being tweaked, maybe it's time to consider changing the default photo management application. Could digikam be modified to look like a gnome application and be used instead? I know it will work, but kde apps look "wrong" in a gnome environment. Development in f-spot is stagnant, digikam seems to offer more features through plugins frequently. Rather then reinventing the wheel or trying to get the uncooperative f-spot maintainers to do something, perhaps having a gnome port of digikam would be the best solution. -- Fspot import lacks ability to delete pictures from camera, easily choose save to destination and does not offer to exit when done https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489620 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 254309] [NEW] UPS USB connection causes power management to freeze system in Hardy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Version of Ubuntu: 8.04.1 Version of package: gnome-power-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu4 What I expected to happen: The panel icon should report state of battery charge, but tell me I am running off the wall. It also should not affect the stability of the system. What happened: The panel icon said I was running off the battery and the system became unstable resulting in hard freezes. I am running Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux, as well as all latest packages. My mobo is Asus A7n-8XE-Deluxe. AMD 64 3200+ 2 gig ram. I purchased a new Tripplite 1000W UPS that has a USB port to allow the OS to monitor the state of the UPS. After plugging it in on a fresh boot, the power management applet had a new tab devoted to the the UPS and an icon appeared in my top panel telling me the system was running on battery power with a charge of 100%. This was not entirely true as the UPS was plugged in and it should have been running of the wall, not the internal battery. Immediately following this, the system became unstable resulting in hard lockups after only a few mins. of use. I tried disabling compiz and made sure cool 'n quiet was disabled in my BIOS. I also tried running the system off a live CD for Hardy 8.04.1 and had the same freezing even with no applications running. This is a hard freeze with no mouse or keyboard input possible. I tried both usb and ps2 keyboards and they all lock up. Only recourse is to hit the reset button on the tower. The system logs in fine and freezes anywhere from 15 seconds to 10 minutes into the session. After shutting down and unplugging the USB cable from the UPS and restarting. [Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.
I am running Ubuntu 8.04.1 32 bit and this bug hit me suddenly this morning. Up till now, I was able to browse my office networks smb shares without difficulty. As of this morning, none of them work. All 4 of my ubuntu workstations are affected. I have saved bookmarks to places on the network that stopped working. I found that I had to change the network path, for example, from smb://server/pictures to smb://10.0.0.5/pictures that finally got all of them working again. I am still unable to browse my network with the Places > Network GUI. It shows the network and then the workgroup, but nothing beyond that. It eventually times out.
