[Bug 410999] [NEW] "Do you want to overwrite..." dialogue box lacks yes/no to all and cancel buttons
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox If a user drags and drops songs from their Music Library to a device on which the songs are already stored, a dialogue box asks them whether the songs on the device should be overwritten (screenshot attached). Because the box doesn't have "yes/no to all" buttons or an option to cancel, if a user accidentally drags a large number of songs to their device that are already on there, they face a time consuming and repetitive task of having then click yes/no on each dialogue box, one- by-one. [Bug 147883] Re: Songs that have a space in their path are not imported automatically from watched music folders
i've found specifically what the problem is and how to fix it in gconf. When rhythmbox runs for the first time it sets the entry in "gconf > apps >rhythmbox > library locations" to /home/ubuntu/Music, which causes the errors. Instead it should set the value to file:///home/ubuntu/Music (obviously replace ubuntu with the actual user). This then doesnt cause the errors, and works correctly. It is also the value put into gconf when you reselect the "music" folder as the library location, so it shouldnt cause any other side effects. the problem still exists on the RC live cd btw. I hope this info is useful for getting it fixed before hardy final -- Songs that have a space in their path are not imported automatically from watched music folders https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147883 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 246130] [NEW] nautilus says out of space on multiple files copy. but may actually want to skip/replace some files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Example Disk has 100 mb of space left. current folder has file called A of size 200mb. Want to copy into that directory a file A of size 200mb and a file called B of 10mb. Show more details There is 100 MB available, but 210 MB is required. Cancel Retry Expected Outcome See error message: Error while copying to "folder" There is not enough space on the destination. Try to remove files to make space or chose individual files to copy. Show more details There is 100 MB available, but 210 MB is required. Cancel | Retry | Ignore warning; copy files individually Then dialog should appear like when you copy multiple files if you are are not running out of disk space, ie replace/skip options Then you would have the option to skip or replace file A when that file is copied, and to put file B in. ANd with disk space to spare Obviously in this case i could have done it individually by inspection, but when there are multiple levels of folder all containing different files, and you want to copy a new folder over the top, skipping each of the files already there, it becomes very difficult. Or you would have to delete the folder on the destination and copy from scratch (which would be slow, and in some cases still not what you wanted, if you had different version of the files in both places) Basically when there is an error on copying multiple files because of disk space, it should go through them one by one. [Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive
Until nautilus can in some other way distinguish between which files could want to be executed. surely the sane default for ubuntu to use would be to "view executable text files when they are opened" instead of "ask each time" this will then be the default for all folders (even if not vfat/ntfs) It should be the default as this is what noobish people would expect, who are also the people likely to still be using ntfs/vfat drives and therefore who are going to be prompted by this dialogue more. And as the experienced users are more likely to know how to change the setting to "ask each time" if that is what they want, and are more likely to keep their home directory where this setting would be saved, and are more likely to be using the terminal to execute these files anyway lets not annoy the non-technical users -- nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/14335 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This does actually allow you to control the volume. [ However, even this isnt ideal, it only has one "master" track, as do the other 2 pulse audio channels ("Monitor source of ALSA ." and "ALSA"), which means that you cant do something like having the input of the microphone outputing through the speakers. Maybe this is what is supposed to be happening i dont know. At least using pulse actually controls the volume. ] Another problem which might be related is that gnome-sound-recorder says "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings." but i will do a seperate bug report about this if necessary. its easy to change from the default with "right click > preferences" on the panel, or "file > change device" in gnome-volume-control. [Bug 199847] Re: gnome-volume-control chooses oss as default device instead of pulse
yeah i missed that, but when you say system wide, its still a user specific setting. Changing in preferences > sound >device ... all of the options change to pulse audio is what is required, and should be set by default. the panel volume control does the right thing, the full volume control does the right thing, keyboard shortcuts work, sound recorder no longer complains about multimedia setting (not sure if it can actually record) the fact that there is one volume track when using pulseaudio is what is expected i guess for pulseaudio, as it controls stuff itself. Good. so this fixes everything, but should be set by default. this is a defaults bug, which should be within the scope of ubuntu. As pulseaudio wil be installed on all hardy heron machines they should all default to controlling pulseaudio, whatever the specific sound card they have. This should be a fix for everyone, not just my specific sound card. ok, thanks for the link. i see that the real problem comes from individual applications. however, the gtk file chooser should at least be consistent with the behaviour of nautilus, which means (at least for files ending in ~) they should show/hide when show hidden files is checked/unchecked -- gtk file chooser shows backup files (files ending in ~ tilde) even "show hidden files" disabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 206583] Re: System Monitor crashes when changing nice value of process
Hi Pedro, The crash doesn't generated a .crash file - System Monitor just closes. Here's my terminal output: The program 'gnome-system-monitor' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 72926 error_code 3 request_code 18 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) If I run "gnome-system-monitor --sync", I get the following: The program 'gnome-system-monitor' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'. [Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume
please people, read the original posters comment before posting about random other applications not working with pulseaudio. that has absolutely nothing to do with the original bug report, which is only about sound not working after resume. for reference, the best test case for seeing is this bug exist is to try playing sound in totem or rhythmbox while no other applications are playing. everybody is getting confused because other appliations have completely seperate problems (AT ALL TIMES) DO NOT report any problems in this bug report if you have problems with any other the following applications: skype, flash (and therefore firefox in general), aplay, sdl applications (such as neverwinter nights), kde applications, kde4 applications. instead find the relevant bug reports for each of those applications do not post any errors talking about not being able to open slave, as this is a seperate issue DO test this with totem look here: http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup look at this thread i made. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756290. to diagnose problems you need to install and run pavucontrol. applications that dont appear in pavucontrol are not the scope of this bug (although they may need seperate fixes and/or bug reports filed against them). applications that do appear in pavucontrol are relevant for this bug report ideally all applications should appear in pavucontrol. this is what ubuntu is working towards -- Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/202089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 192629] Re: Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition
thanks for the hint rocko, and thanks for the read sebastian bacher. i know that we cant go around making the ntfs drive owned by the user, but changing the fstab line to something like: /dev/sda2 /c ntfs defaults,umask=007,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 1 gives some useful results at least: files are deleted with a single delete key, and appear in trash:// but havent been copied on to the other partition, but are rather stored in the folder .Trash-1000. (if the fstab line is changed back, files in .Trash-1000 do not appear in trash://), so it is all technologically possible Security concerns dont really exist with trash folders on shared drives: If you delete a file that was public on an ntfs drive, you expect it to go to your trash, and will expect it to still be public, and if you really want to get rid of it you will know you have to empty your trash. The problem set up in gutsy was where file were deleted and then vanished from the gui, but still existed on the hard drive, ie security worry as people thought it was gone, but it wasnt. As the files are now in the gui there is no problem any more. This is the expected behaviour. If another user puts a file in your recycle bin maliciously, this can hardly be called a security concern either. The idea of potentially a malicious file appearing in your trash and you opening it is not really something to worry about. The exact same thing could happen in the drive itself, ie a user puts a malicious file in your reservered (ie by social convention) folder on the ntfs drive, and you wonder where it is from and open it. the fact that it is now the trash folder as well adds nothing. if each user has a seperate .trash-{user} folder on the ntfs drives, the above concerns only exist if another user on the system goes out of their way to either read someone elses trashed files, or to put a file into someone elses trash folder. But as there is no concept of any security on this drive, this is already the case: a user can go out of their way read someone else's files, or to put something into someone else's reserved (ie by social convention) folder. by putting an ntfs drive into your computer the users and admin have to accept that there is a potential security hole through this drive, and are relying on trust for your users, the trash is no different all the technology is there now. the only worry is security concerns, but they are really moot. We cant help people who have ntfs drives, they know that security is weaker. They must accept that any files stored on that partition are going to be public untill they are completely removed (but now are not put under the false impression that they are gone), and also that any other user is free to put any file onto that drive, which you might bump into by accident. i suggest using .trash-{user}, and having the contents of that folder appear in the relevant user trash:// folder. if the admin cares about security of files it will be obvious that no files should ever be stored on the ntfs drive (or get rid of the drive), if the admin lets the users store file on this drive, then it is clear that the admin is relying on trust between the users when dealing with files on this drive, so the trash system i just described is appropriate, and isnt any more vulnerable to attack or security comprimise. -- Cannot send files to trashcan from an ntfs partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/192629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
