If I run sudo sysctl -w kernel.apparmor_restrict_unprivileged_userns=0 thumbnails do appear again, under two possible scenarios: logging out/in, and changing the file name. I see thousands of apparmor messages in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/syslog.1, and /var/log/kern.log. Well, it's been a full month since my last question, prompted by instructions I received in response to an even earlier comment. I've received no response so far. We're also two weeks away from this bug's first anniversary. Hi, Georgia. Thanks for responding. To my surprise, I am indeed using Desktop Icons NG (DING). I have no idea when I installed it, or why. This Ubuntu installation is probably five years old; I've only upgraded over the years. If I disable the extension, all my Desktop icons disappear. I tried opening /var/log/syslog with nano and gedit, but it's extremely slow and cumbersome. Do you know how to extract only the messages with the term 'apparmor' that appear since last boot?
