[Bug 11894] Sound Juicer should remember modifications to titles/artists after exiting

2006-03-12 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/11894

Comment:
In the case where you go to the MB site and fix the data for everyone,
S-J needs to have a way to reload that data instead of using the cached
data. I suggest that the "Re-read disc" function do this.

Also, It's still useful to be able to retain your own changes, as (at
least for me) it is not uncommon to disagree with the MusicBrainz
metadata.

[Bug 36485] gtk.Window.present()

2006-03-24 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36485

Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
gtk.Window.present() does not work if raise_on_click is set false in gconf.
That is, it does not raise the window, although it does focus it.
 http://pygtk.org/pygtk2reference/class-gtkwindow.html#method-gtkwindow--present

The fact that the window manager option changes this behavior makes me
think it is a metacity bug rather than a gtk or pygtk bug.

[Bug 11894] Re: Sound Juicer should remember modifications to titles/artists after exiting

2006-06-16 Thread Alex Mauer
One example I've found where I disagree irreconcilably with Musicbrainz,
is the Marilyn Manson track known as "Spade" or "♠".

I prefer the "♠" spelling, while MB prefers the "Spade" spelling because
they don't like to use Unicode in tags where it can be avoided. Thus I
prefer to use my info for myself, rather than theirs, and a local cache
is the way to do this. In this case, neither of us are "wrong", we just
have a different perspective on it.

I also tend to rip my CDs more than once, as I generally rip to OGG but
sometimes want something in MP3 or FLAC for some reason. Sometimes rips
screw up because I have the wrong settings, or random other reasons. I
prefer not to have to make my changes over and over.

The software I noticed triggering the bug is gajim (http://gajim.org) --

[Bug 635288] [NEW] gnome-keyring daemon sets SSH_AUTH_SOCK even when ssh support is ostensibly disabled

2010-09-10 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Ssh says that gnome-keyring-daemon
stealing the SSH_AUTH_SOCK from other programs can be disabled by
setting the gconf key /apps/gnome-keyring/daemon-components/ssh to
false. Unfortunately, this does not work, and while it may or may not
prevent it from acting as an ssh agent, it still steals the
SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variable when it’s run.

If this key is set as the documentation describes, it should not do
this.

[Bug 360748] Re: GNOME keyboard layout options are not applied on login

2009-05-29 Thread Alex Mauer
OK, I've found an extra twist to this problem:

I'm on a Dell Latitude D620 in a docking station. The option does get
partially applied, but it only works with the built-in keyboard. The
setting does not get applied to the external USB keyboard that I use
most of the time, until I go into the options as described.

At the console, 'showkey' shows keycode 100 press/release for the right-
alt key on either keyboard.

In X, xev shows keycode 108 (keysym 0xffea, Alt_R) for the USB keyboard,
but keycode 108 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key) for the built-in keyboard.

[Bug 415655] [NEW] Spellcheck problems with capitalisation

2009-08-18 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When gedit finds a misspelling, it doesn't do a good job of taking
capitalisation into account.

For example, the misspelled word "Iittle" (note the upper-case "i")
gives the suggestions "Tittle", "Little", "Vittles"...all of which have
the first letter capitalised. However, it doesn't suggest at all
"little" with a lower-case "L" as a possibility, but instead assumes
that the original capitalisation is correct.

This problem happens in the opposite direction too: "WAlT" (note the
lower-case "L") gives the suggestions "Walt", "Alt", "Waltz",
"Wale","Welt","Wast", "Wait" ... "WAIT" in all-caps isn't even listed as
a possibility. Again, it's assigning too much importance to the
capitalisation of the first letter, and not enough to the rest.

Since gedit uses enchant for spell-checking, I'll also assign this bug
to enchant. However, gedit could be doing a better job with sorting the
suggestions ("wast" before "wait"??)

The meaning of the option “Display incoming events in the notification

[Bug 508834] [NEW] wizard shown repeatedly when launched from Ubuntu menu

2010-01-17 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

If Empathy has no accounts configured, it will show the New Account
wizard every time the launcher is run from the Ubuntu menu. However, it
will not if launched from the indicator-applet.

This behaviour should be made consistent. If Empathy is already
running, it should only show the contact list. If it’s not, and there
are no accounts, only then should it display the wizard.

[Bug 322827] [NEW] libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-01-29 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-gnome-keyring

On a system set up to authenticate to an external service, such as LDAP,
Active Directory, or Kerberos: When the password is changed on the
external service (e.g. due to a forgotten password+reset or a forced
periodic password change where the user happened to log in on a
different machine when the change came due), the keyring is not
unlockable with the new password. This means that unless the user
remembers their old password, and knows how to change the keyring
password, the keyring must be wiped, losing all the keys stored in the
keyring.

This bug is distinct from several other similar bugs, in that it the
other bugs relate to the keyring password not being updated properly
when the password is changed on the current system. This one concerns
only the situation where the password is changed externally.

One possible (but very ugly) solution is to simply drop the current
keyring/passphrase and start anew when the user successfully logs in
using a password that doesn't unlock the keyring. Better would be to
somehow change the keyring password so that the keyring can be unlocked
with the new password.

This is in Ubuntu Jaunty.

[Bug 322827] Re: libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-01-29 Thread Alex Mauer
This is not the job of the tools used to change the password. It is not
the responsibility of say, "Active Directory Users and Computers" or
"ldappasswd" or "kpasswd" to know that libpam-gnome-keyring is used on
some arbitrary machine elsewhere and somehow go and change the keyring
password on that other machine. It is clearly the responsibility of
gnome-keyring to handle the situation gracefully when the password has
been changed elsewhere, outside of its control.

[Bug 322827] Re: libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-02-02 Thread Alex Mauer
I agree that nothing forces the use of a similar password. However, it
is the default on a fresh Ubuntu install.

One possibility would be for gnome-keyring to have a configuration flag
that would indicate if the password should be synchronised with the
system password. No cleartext stored password should be necessary.

So the sequence would go:
1. On an Ubuntu fresh install the password sync flag would be set, and keyring
password would be the same as the login password.
2. User's password is changed externally.
3. User logs in. The password is accepted for login, but does not unlock the
keyring.
4. libpam-gnome-keyring has the new password since the user just logged in with
it.
5. libpam-gnome-keyring needs the old password, so it prompts for it.
6. libpam-gnome-keyring changes the keyring password and unlocks the keyring.
7. The user changes the keyring password manually.
8. The password sync flag is cleared, and so libpam-gnome-keyring should no
longer do steps 5 and 6.

[Bug 259169] Re: gnome-display-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in _start()

For me, the crash (assuming it's the exact same one) happens when I have
my laptop (Dell Latitude D620) in a port replicator, booted with an
external monitor on the port replicator and also with the lid open.

Output of xrandr:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 2432 x 864
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 303mm x
190mm
   1280x800 60.0 +
   1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0*
   832x62474.6

   720x40085.0
   640x40085.1
   640x35085.1

The laptop built-in display is blank at this point. Running gnome-
display-properties will crash. If I run xrandr --output LVDS --mode
1280x800, the built-in display comes up (with the semi-expected panel
sizing problems), and running 'gnome-display-properties' will work
properly.

[Bug 288400] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't properly refresh volume labels on media change

2008-10-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I go to the "Computer" view and double-click on a CD-ROM, labeled
e.g. "My Data 1", nautilus will show [/][media][My Data 1] in the
button-based location bar. Clicking "up" moves me to [media] (/media on
the filesystem.

If I then eject the disc and insert one labeled e.g. "My Data 2", the
entry for the CD-ROM in the "Places" sidebar will change to show "My
Data 2". However, the location bar still shows [/][media][My Data 1] as
buttons ([media] being the currently-selected button). And if I double-
click on cdrom0, nautilus switches the selected button to [My Data 1],
but doesn't update the button label to reflect the new disc. Double-
clicking on "My Data 2" in the side bar has no effect. The button will
not change until I browse to somewhere else, such that the [My Data 1]
button is removed. At that point, going back to /media/cdrom0 will re-
add the button with the correct label.

[Bug 288390] [NEW] weird path for removeable media in Nautilus

2008-10-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When going to the "Computer" view of Nautilus, I can see "Filesystem"
and a CD-ROM with a label, in this case "DN60AENU2". If I double-click
on the CD-ROM, the path buttons at the top change from "Computer" to "<"
(indicating there is more path to the left) and "DN60AENU2".

At this point, clicking "Up" will bring me to "/media" instead of
bringing me back to "Computer". Listed in "/media" are "cdrom0" and
"cdrom". No "DN60AENU2".

Double-clicking on the symlink "cdrom" takes me to (buttons)
[media][cdrom]. Double-clicking on "cdrom0" takes me to
[media][DN60AENU2]. Switching to a text-based location bar shows the
former as "/media/cdrom" and the latter as "/media/cdrom0".

I recognize why all these inconsistencies occur, but I feel that they
should not.

1. "Up" after "Down" should leave you where you started.
2. If a path is shown as [media][DN60AENU2] then there should be a "DN60AENU2"
item in [media].
3. opening the "cdrom0" item in [media] should take you to [media][cdrom0] not
[media][DN60AENU2].
4. If mount points are to be shown with their volume labels when you're in them
(i.e. when you're at /media/cdrom0 it shows as [media][DN60AENU2]), then
symlinks to them should behave the same.
5. The text-based location bar should be consistent with the button-based one.
6. Is there any reason that CD-ROMs are treated differently from other
removeable media? Most removeable media are mounted at their label, and their
mount point is removed they're ejected. CD-ROMs should work the same way.

I don't think this is a duplicate of that bug. I have not disabled CD-
ROM polling. The label changes correctly in all places that I could see
except for the location bar buttons. For example, going to "Computer"
shows the new label correctly.

[Bug 288374] Re: nautilus "rescan" of removable media fails

2008-10-24 Thread Alex Mauer
I really don't think it is. That one seems to be about (automatically)
checking for updated drive labels.

This one is not related to changing media.

If it is a duplicate, it's more likely to be of bug #197954, except that
one is in relation to floppy drives and merely accessing them rather
than hitting rescan.

That would make it a gvfs problem.

[Bug 293222] [NEW] totem doesn't understand video type video/x-ati-vcr

2008-11-03 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

Totem cannot play video of type x-ati-vcr (fourcc appears to be VCR2).

When it tries, it displays at the console, "** Message: Missing plugin:
gstreamer|0.10|totem-gstreamer|ATI VCR 2 decoder|decoder-video/x-ati-

codecs either.

totem-xine is also unable to play this file, but of course does not run

displays: "Opening video decoder: [libmpeg2] MPEG 1/2 Video decoder

[Bug 293232] [NEW] totem-gstreamer: doesn't display what codec it needs

2008-11-03 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

when totem-gstreamer encounters a video codec which it doesn't
understand, it offers to use gstreamer-codec-installer to install a
codec. Unfortunately, it never displays what codec is to be searched
for, in order to facilitate the situation where gstreamer-codec-
installer might fail. Totem should display this information, either
when it prompts the user to search for a codec, or once gstreamer-codec-
installer has failed to find/install the relevant codec.

[Bug 403671] Re: Custom web browser is not saved in Preferred applications capplet

2009-07-23 Thread Alex Mauer
This problem can be duplicated by:
1. go to system->preferences-> Preferred Applications
2. in the web browser dropdown, choose "Custom"
3. type in a command such as "/usr/bin/firefox-3.5 %s" (or whatever you choose)
4. click 'close'
5. open a link in another application (such as thunderbird or pidgin) which
uses gnome's preferred applications. It will use the specified custom command,
as expected.
6. Go to system->preferences->Preferred Applications. The dropdown selection
is still "custom", but the command is now blank.

This is in Karmic.

[Bug 404321] Re: gnome-screensaver should allow screen unlock even if account is locked out

2009-07-28 Thread Alex Mauer
It's totally unusable to me, since I only have one AD account so
switching to another user isn't really viable.

Obviously there's the workaround of going to a console session as root
and killing gnome-screensaver, but that's just silly in my opinion.

Interesting that the microsoft support link doesn't give a rationale
either way for this policy. It would probably be good to have it as a
configurable option though, rather than forcing it to work one way or
the other.

Wouldn't a locked account result in a successful pam auth, but
unsuccessful pam account result, rather than checking for a specific
error code?

[Bug 405892] [NEW] rhythmbox internal volume level changes on track change, doesn't match pulseaudio level, scales weirdly

2009-07-28 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

On Karmic:

When rhythmbox changes track, its internal volume level changes, rapidly
heading towards zero. I start with a comfortable volume level in
rhythmbox of 10%. After one track, it changes to 1%, and then after
another track it's at 0%. It doesn't happen absolutely every time, but
pretty close. I have the gconf key /apps/rhythmbox/use_replaygain set
to false, which may make a difference (rhythmbox was hanging frequently
when I had it on)

Its internal volume level scale seems weird too: changing it also
affects the application volume in pulseaudio, but not in any way I would
expect:

Adjusting the volume in Rhythmbox goes as follows:

[Bug 413015] [NEW] totem: Tries and fails to use both srt and vobsub subtitles at the same time

2009-08-13 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

On Karmic

If a file (mkv is what I tried) contains both srt and vobsub subtitles,
totem will refuse to play it, with the error "An error occurred: Can't
play a text subtitles and subpictures". Aside from the horrible
grammar, totem should only be trying to use one of the available
subtitle formats, not both simultaneously.

[Bug 413018] [NEW] totem: should allow disabling subtitles

2009-08-13 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

In Karmic.

Using vobsub subtitles in an mkv video file, totem always displays them,
and doesn't give the option to turn them off. The "Subtitles" right-
click submenu shows only "Empty", which is ghosted.

Obviously, it should give the option to turn these subtitles off.

Agreed that this problem still exists in Karmic. Setting
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_windows_backward worked for me.

[Bug 585022] [NEW] Cannot login if no local users exist

2010-05-24 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Since I use likewise-open for authentication, I thought it unnecessary
to keep the one local user on the machine.

Unfortunately, deleting this user prevents choosing “Other...” at the
login screen, and also prevents typing from switching to a user name
text entry box. This makes it impossible to login.

Obviously, gdm should allow logins even if there are no users in its
list.

[Bug 920613] [NEW] crash if /etc/passwd changes

2012-01-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

GDM (gdm-session-worker) will crash if /etc/passwd is modified (e.g. via
'vipw'). When that happens, it is impossible to re-login until gdm is
restarted.

Crash shows in the system log like:

[Bug 832303] Re: Option “Display incoming events in the notification area” is unclear

2012-01-25 Thread Alex Mauer
I don’t expect the events displayed to change, I expect the description
to match what it does. Renaming it to “automatically open incoming
events” and reversing its sense would be one way to do this

[Bug 75654] Re: deleted songs listed again when using library watch

2012-02-16 Thread Alex Mauer
One situation I can think of: A shared music library (for example,
shared between myself and my wife) on a network drive. I want to load
the whole thing, but then there are a few albums that I hate but my wife
likes (and vice versa). Since they’re not mine and one of us does want
them, I don’t want to delete the files…but I just want to remove them
from my library.

[Bug 457816] Re: cannot play Quicktime media

2009-10-21 Thread Alex Mauer
Most of the plugins simply failed completely. However:

When I chose to install gxine, it simply asked for installation of
missing plugins again. When I manually installed gxineplugin instead,
it launched a separate gxine window, which failed to play the media.

gecko-mediaplayer was able to play the video once; however, if I stopped
the video and closed the new window where the media was supposed to
play, it would not play again, even if I restarted the browser.

Note that the aforementioned “new window” refers to a new browser window
opened by the web page link, not a separate window created by gecko-
mediaplayer.

[Bug 457816] Re: cannot play Quicktime media

2009-10-22 Thread Alex Mauer
Cesare:

The problem with gecko-mediaplayer is as I said. For me at least, it
works very infrequently.

I click the link, it plays. I then close the window and it won't play
again --- the new window opens up, the plugin loads, and then it just
sits there at "Stopped". Clicking play has no effect. reloading the
page has no effect. No error is indicated; it simply doesn't work.
