Bug#600575: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Intermittent black screen on resume from suspend on 945GM

2010-10-18 Thread trutter
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.9.1-4
Severity: important

On Acer Timeline/Aspire 1810TZ which has 945GM graphics, the screen remains
black, with backlight on, when resuming from suspend.

The problem happens probably 80% of the time; resuming _sometimes_ works but it
usually doesn't.

When it resumes, the screen is black but X appears to be running and to have
successfully resumed apart from the black screen. Pressing caps lock toggles
the caps lock light successfully. Wifi comes on and connects. Key
combinations appear to have some effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+F[1-7] does not
have any visible effect. Xorg and pm logs indicate nothing out of the
ordinary.

Thanks KiBi,

Unfortunately, problem persists in both 2.12 (from unstable) and 2.13
(from experimental) for me.

2.12: failed 3/3 times
2.13: failed 2/3 times

This was with KMS on.

I've tried a number of things to fix it:

- KMS on and off
- BIOS upgrade (running latest now)
- GDM3 instead of GDM

Have been following squeeze (amd64) for >6 months and not been able to
get resume from suspend working during this time.

Is there any logfile I can look in or troubleshooting method I haven't
thought of?

Cheers,
Thomas

On further investigation it appears that I can press CTRL+ALT+F1, and
though nothing appears to happen, I can type the commands to login and
reboot from there.

Bug#600575: Info received (Bug#600575: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Intermittent black screen on resume from suspend on 945GM)

2010-10-19 Thread trutter

New info:

This problem only occurs when the following setting is enabled in
gnome-screensaver-preferences:

[ ] "Lock screen when screensaver is active"

With this option turned off, problem goes away.

Looks like screensaver/x-session stuff is somehow involved.

Can anyone help by testing on similar hardware - or deciding if this bug
should be re-assigned?

Using pm-suspend from a terminal emulator works fine, but then that
doesn't show the lock screen on resume, and I believe that lock screen
to be a precondition of this bug.

Bug#600575: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Intermittent black screen on resume from suspend on 945GM

2010-10-24 Thread trutter
I've discovered this is the same behaviour as Ubuntu bug #546578 which
actually has been resolved with a patch to gnome-screensaver:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/546578

It is a problem with the fade-out that occurs when the screen is locked.

The fade-out happens using the mechanism that changes gamma on the video
card. Then, sometimes after locking (or, indeed, after switching users
and switching back), the gamma is not restored so the video remains black.

After the problem occurs,

xgamma -gamma 1.0

brings the screen back up nicely. I can confirm that this works for me
- typing this blind or assigning this to a key combination brings the
display back.

Workaround in Ubuntu:

Ubuntu worked around this problem by disabling the fade-out when locking
in gnome-screensaver. This might be a good idea - note that Debian
already doesn't fade-out on some video hardware.

If this can't be fixed in x-x-v-intel, could this be re-assigned to
gnome-screensaver?
