I've discovered this is the same behaviour as Ubuntu bug #546578 which
actually has been resolved with a patch to gnome-screensaver:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/546578
It is a problem with the fade-out that occurs when the screen is locked.
The fade-out happens using the mechanism that changes gamma on the video
card. Then, sometimes after locking (or, indeed, after switching users
and switching back), the gamma is not restored so the video remains black.
After the problem occurs,
xgamma -gamma 1.0
brings the screen back up nicely. I can confirm that this works for me
- typing this blind or assigning this to a key combination brings the
display back.
Workaround in Ubuntu:
Ubuntu worked around this problem by disabling the fade-out when locking
in gnome-screensaver. This might be a good idea - note that Debian
already doesn't fade-out on some video hardware.
If this can't be fixed in x-x-v-intel, could this be re-assigned to
gnome-screensaver?
