Bug#455355: xserver-xorg 7.3 from unstable broke X
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.3 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I tried to install xserver-xorg 7.3 from unstable and it broke X. First the error was that it couldn't find module type1. I commented out load "type1" in xorg.conf. Then it told me it couldn't find module v4l. I commented out load "v4l" in xorg.conf. Then it told me it couldn't find mga. I have a matrox card and need mga so I gave up and reverted to xserver-xorg 7.2. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.22.07 Debian Release: lenny/sid 500 testing www.debian-multimedia.org 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing ftp.nerim.net --- Package information. --- Depends(Version) | Installed -+-== xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-3) | 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12lenny1 xserver-xorg-video-all | OR xserver-xorg-video-1.0 | xserver-xorg-input-all | OR xserver-xorg-input | debconf(>= 0.5) | 1.5.17 OR debconf-2.0 | xkb-data | 1.0~cvs.20070916-1 OR xkb-data-legacy | xbase-clients| 1:7.2.ds2-2 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#532623: [xserver-xorg] install hangs at Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2)
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.4+2 Severity: critical --- Please enter the report below this line. --- This bug report is not being submitted from the machine the bug is on so disregard the package information. The machine the bug is on is severely broken due to trying to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. The machine that is broken is an up to date squeeze box. I tried to install gnome-session, and gnome-settings-daemon from sid. When I did that it wanted to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. Synaptic hung with the last line in the console saying: Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2) It would not complete so I killed synaptic. I can still ssh into the box. After I removed all of the locks that were hanging around, I did dpkg --configure -a to try and reconfigure whatever was partially configured. That command also hangs with the last line saying: Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2) ... So, it looks like X is completely broken. I did Ctrl-Alt-backspace and everything went blank. Ctrl-Alt f1... doesn't even bring up a terminal. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.28.090316 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 testing www.debian-multimedia.org 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing debian.linux.ibm.com 500 intrepidppa.launchpad.net --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed ===-+-= xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.4-3) | 2:1.4.2-11 xserver-xorg-video-all | OR xserver-xorg-video-2| xserver-xorg-input-all | OR xserver-xorg-input-2| libc6(>= 2.7-1) | 2.9-12 debconf (>= 0.5) | 1.5.26 OR debconf-2.0 | xkb-data| 1.5-2 OR xkb-data-legacy | x11-xkb-utils | 7.4+2 Recommends (Version) | Installed ==-+-=== libgl1-mesa-dri| 7.4-2 udev | 0.141-1 Package's Suggests field is empty. --- Output from package bug script --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#532623: closed by Julien Cristau (Bug#532623: fixed in xorg 1:7.4+3)
I rebooted the computer hoping that X might work when the computer came up. X did start but it had some problems. I was running metacity before trying to install the xserver-xorg version from sid and ran into all of the problems installing. I noticed some animation when I started windows in gnome and the windows did not have window decorations. I started the compiz configuration applet. The applet said I was running metacity which is what should have been running. I did not see any metacity process though. If I select compiz in the applet and then go back to metacity, metacity will be the windows manager and everything will work correctly as it did before the xserver-xorg upgrade. Each time I login to gnome it seems to go back to compiz. If I configure compiz to have window decorations and restart compiz it will have decorations but they don't do anything (i.e. you can see them but can't move the window, minimize, maximize, kill, etc. on the decoration). So it seems that the xserver-xorg install kind of halfway switched the window manager from metacity to compiz. Forcing compiz and configuring compiz gives me visual non-functioning window decorations. I wouldn't mind running compiz if the windows decorations worked. Otherwise, I would like the default to be metacity. Brent -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#546836: [xserver-xorg-video-mga] black screen when X starts
Package: xserver-xorg-video-mga Version: 1:1.4.11.dfsg-1 Severity: grave --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I upgraded xserver-xorg... that hit squeeze recently. I also updated xserver-xorg-video-mga. When I restarted X, I don't get a gdm login screen it is just black. I can still hear the ready to login sound that plays. I can blindly type the login information and hear the gnome login sound. The screen remains black. It is like the monitor has been put to sleep. I can do alt-F1 to go to a tty session. When it opens the session, the monitor slowly wakes up and I can see the session. There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log. I have a Matrox G550 card. I even tried removing xorg.conf and letting X set everything. It didn't make any difference. I tried /etc/init.d/gdm resgtart and X restarts and I can hear the ready to login sound but the screen is still black. Bug#585911: display breaks on Lenovo W500 with KMS
I got the latest linux-source 2.6.32 from sid and rebuilt my kernel. I removed my /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf which had options radeon modeset=0. I can boot with the kernel and X seems to be fine. When I look in Xorg.0.log I see the following line: [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported. So, I'm not sure if KMS is being used or not. Bug#585911: display breaks on Lenovo W500 with KMS
I set modeset=1 explicitly. It still said modesetting isn't supported in the Xorg.0.log. I got linux-image-2.6.32-5-686-bigmen from sid (2.6.32-24) and rebooted and KMS worked. I did get 4 or 5 error messages first thing in the boot messages at the top of the screen. I couldn't write them all down before they scrolled off. They started out something like this: drm:[atom_op_jump] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 1 sec ... So, I don't know if setting modeset=1 explicitly is actually required or if the sid kernel was all that was required.
