Bug#572311: No display output from Radeon RV610 on Alpha

2010-03-03 Thread Michael Cree
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.12.4-3
Severity: important

On X startup monitor goes comletely dead, i.e., no signal on DVI output with
a Radeon RV610 card on Alpha architecture. On another Alpha with a Radeon
R100 card output (on VGA) comes up fine so appears problem is only seen with
newer Radeon cards.

Interestingly if I compile debian source for the ati driver with the -mbwx
compiler flag (which permits the compiler to use the byte-word extension
supported only on Alpha CPUs since the EV56) then I get a working radeon
video driver on the Alpha with the RV610 video card. The display comes up
fine and dandy.

This is suggestive that somewhere in the Radeon driver a byte or word access
is being made into the video card's register bank without going through the
Xserver's MMIO_IN/OUT routines.

I suggest adding the -mbwx compiler flag for the Alpha architecture. Yes, it
will break the radeon video driver on all Alphas that do not support BWX,
but the Xserver has been severely broken on such Alphas ever since the
introduction of libpciaccess and is not likely to be fixed in the near
future so there is no loss, and only gain, in introducing the flag.

thanks

Dear maintainer,

I've prepared an NMU for ccsm (versioned as 0.8.4-1.1) and uploaded it
to DELAYED/3. Please feel free to tell me if I should delay it longer.

The patch is the one proposed, but using "*-packages" to be more
resilient to changes.

Regards.

Bug#528360: xserver-xorg-core: closing the laptop lid blanks the screen permanently

This is possibly kernel version related or acpid related, I cannot
recall upgrading anything else recently.

Could you please try with a recent kernel? See second part of [1],
which is somehow valid for radeon as well.

 1. http://ikibiki.org/blog/2010/02/28/Where_have_you_been/

This is still broken with recent stuff (KMS capable) unless KMS is used.

KMS is broken on this hardware, though.

The kernel is 2.6.32-3-686.

Thanks

Bug#562640: #562640 xterm(1) man page: replace /etc/wtmp by /var/log/wtmp

Obviously I only notice this after uploading the updated package, but
minstall.sh doesn't look for utmp in /var/run, which is its location
according to the FHS (which Debian mostly follows):
http://pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#VARRUNRUNTIMEVARIABLEDATA

Could you add that path in the next release?

Thanks,

Start xterm and type "man xterm", , and . Then hold and the
middle mouse button to show the "VT Options" menu and select "Show Alternate

the whole window.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) with Linux kernel 2.6.28-17-generic and libc6

The xterm man page says for the -ls option:

Finally, -ls is not completely ignored, because xterm -ls -e
does write a /etc/wtmp entry (if configured to do so), whereas
   xterm -e does not.

There's no such file /etc/wtmp on my machine. Perhaps it should be
/var/log/wtmp as listed in the FILES section? Or should it be utmp
(as the following mentions utmp only)?

I planned to look into ccsm's bugs a few days ago, but got tricked
into -intel's bugs. I'll try and look into merging your diff directly
in the git repository, or let the NMU get uploaded after the delay if
I fail to do so.

Bug#569400: xserver-xorg-input-penmount: in Unstasblse for 326 days

2010-03-03 Thread Jan Jabbery
>> Do you use this driver?

Yes. I work at the repairs department at an industrial computer company.
I built a custom Debian LiveCD, based on live-helper (very nice tool), with
all kinds of utilities for testing and stressing the machines.
Quite often the machines are PanelPC's, and sometimes the part to be tested
is the touchscreen. Controllers are usually from PenMount or EloTouch, so
it's nice to have this driver available.

Thanks for your help :)

No problem, in case you want to look at it more in details and you need
more time just let me know and I'll reschedule the NMU (or cancel it,
FWIW).

Thanks for the feedback!

commit 2de0af5f5b806f9dbfdb1e9b6a5cf96d9433961d
Author: Matt Turner

Use RADEON_ALIGN instead of open coding it.

Also fix some RADEON_ALIGN(x, 63), which would return incorrect results
for odd x. Though this shouldn't happen, it's still not right. You
wouldn't ever write (x + 62) & ~62 which is clearly wrong (and what it
expands to).

Package: ccsm
Version: 0.8.2-2
Severity: important
User: debian-pyt...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: python2.6 dist-packages

Hi,

ccsm is built using the Python distutils mechanism.

Starting from Python 2.6, the installation paths for distutils have
changed. Instead of /usr/lib/pythonX.Y/site-packages, the default has
now changed to /usr/local.

The packaging helpers (debhelper, dh, cdbs, python-support,
python-central) will pick automatically these changes, or are being
fixed to do so. However, ccsm seems to do some manipulations in the
site-packages/ directory in its build process.

To fix this issue, the recommended approach is to pass
"--install-layout=deb" to the "python setup.py" invocation. This is
already the default if you use dh - or migrate to dh, which is also
recommended.

When you do that, modules are installed in
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages instead of site-packages. You have
then to either use a *-packages wildcard, or to use
/usr/share/python/python.mk which provides useful functions to
manipulate these directories.

Cheers,

Bug#568170: xserver-xorg-video-nv: nv driver causes segfault in X server during InitOutput

2010-03-03 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

branen salmon (02/02/2010):
> After upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-nv 2.1.15-1 and

> 3: /usr/bin/X (xf86CrtcSetModeTransform+0x3f9) [0x80ce3a9]

sounds actually like a bug in the server, triggered by the nv
driver. I guess it's fixed by the following commit upstream:

Bug#572311: No display output from Radeon RV610 on Alpha

2010-03-03 Thread Michael Cree

On 04/03/10 04:39, Alex Deucher wrote:

On Wed, Mar 3, 2010 at 3:04 AM, Michael Cree wrote:

I wonder if it's the legacy vga save/restore. Does:
Option "VGAAccess" "FALSE"
help?

No, that doesn't help. Still get no output.

The following lines were seen in the Xorg.log confirming that the option
was indeed acted upon:

(**) RADEON(0): Option "VGAAccess" "FALSE"
(II) RADEON(0): VGAAccess option set to FALSE, VGA module load skipped

Cheers
Michael.

Bug#572134: xserver-xorg-video-intel: i915 945GM gpu crashed after resume

2010-03-03 Thread Mark Borst
Hi Cyril

Thanks for having a look at my problem. I have installed debug packages.

I've been trying to reliably reproduce the problem, and it comes down to
this:

*1. dmesg > dmesg_before; echo mem > /sys/power/state; dmesg >
dmesg_after*works. No problem whatsoever. This is from
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/suspend-resume.html

2. pm-suspend works fine. No problem, not after multiple times. I don't get
the gnome lock-screen thingie.

3. close laptop lid. This gives the problem. The first time it's fine, the
second time it gives the problem. Always. I don't know what exactly is
happening and why this is different. But after closing the lid, I get the
gnome lock-screen passwordprompt. It seems gdm is trying to restart X, and
that's failing the second time.

A little problem is that I can't ssh into the box when it's 'broken' as
network-manager apparantly doesn't work when there is no nm-applet to talk
to, like when X isn't there.

So there seems to be a dependency on the way the laptop is suspended, but I
don't know how to determine that properly. Do you have any more suggestions?

Thanks,

Mark

Bug#569776: lenny's version work

Quoting your bugreport:
| DRM Information from dmesg:
| [ 79.382499] [] ? sysfs_addrm_finish+0x13/0x199

It looks like the “grep” targeted at drm found something that seems
unrelated, but that looks like a backtrace.

I note you're using an “old” kernel version, so if you'd like to give
a try to recent Xorg & kernel, you can find some clues in the second
part of [1]. According to [2], we should have other kernel versions to
test in a not-too-far future. Posting the whole output of “dmesg” may
help determine whether the kernel backtrace is relevant.

Version: 1:7.5+3
Severity: important

Since the recent upgrade, I have resume issues on my Eee PC 1000HG:

driver "intel": After resume display flickers from time to time (maybe every
2-5 minutes), after a couple of hours of flickering it goes white (most of the
times) or blue (observed only once so far). This can be reproduced reliably.

driver "vesa": Backlight was off on resume, could be switched on with Fn-F6,
however console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) was botched, too, showing a full screen of Euro
signs (€). Didn't try to reproduce.

Xorg.log is attached showing one suspend/resume cycle with the intel driver.

Let me know, if you need more info.

Cheers!

Thiemo Nagel

Package: libxi6
Version: 2:1.3-2
Severity: important

An attempt to launch seemingly any Qt3 app (tried at least qtconfig-qt3 and
knutclient) inside a vnc4server session results in a "Segmentation fault" error
when libxi6 2:1.3-2 is installed:

$ qtconfig-qt3
Segmentation fault
$

In dmesg:
[ 7001.234225] qtconfig-qt3[9604]: segfault at 4 ip 7fa5e618c347 sp
7fff7198f2d0 error 4 in libXi.so.6.1.0[7fa5e6184000+f000]

After a downgrade of libxi6 to 2:1.2.1-2, all the apps run fine:

$ qtconfig-qt3
Xlib: extension "XInputExtension" missing on display ":1.0".
Failed to get list of devices

After these messages the application proceeds to launch normally, shows the GUI
and works just fine.

Huh, Eee PC doesn't compile as fast as I thought...

I've recompiled the package. Installed it. /usr/bin/Xorg md5sum has
changed, so I suppose it has been actually installed.

Doing so wasn't easy as:
$ DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip noopt" fakeroot apt-get -b source xorg-server
doesn't end successfully. It stops with:
/dix/xtest/init: FAIL: xtest

1 of 3 tests failed
[...more info...]

It continued after issuing manually:
dpkg-buildpackage -uc -nc

After applying the patch Xorg still crashes.

One interesting thing is that when I launch UT with both monitors on it
doesn't crash. It happens when I leave only the VGA1 on (eg. using
xrandr).

And now I know why I haven't noticed it earlier. Generally I don't start
my day with a UT session. I switch from the X vt to a text one and back
many times a day. During the first switch back LVDS1 is left on, even
though it stops being updated with new graphics (text actually).

I think it's some kind of another bug it is left on.

I'll try and remember to document how to do so more easily. Myself, I
tend to “apt-get source $foo; cd $foo-$version; make -f debian/rules
patch”, and then apply manually some patches.

Then: dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -b -nc

(You also don't need to set nostrip/noopt since symbols are available
through the -dbg package, so they're going to be usable by gdb as long
as you install both new -core and -core-dbg packages.)

> After applying the patch Xorg still crashes.

I'm not sure, but it looks like the backtrace slightly changed: we had
no mentions of xf86RandR12ChangeGamma() previously; that might be
because the previous trace was obtained through X's embedded segfault
catcher.

I think I've seen some changes related to that “new” (in the
backtrace) function, I'll follow up in a moment.

Sounds like other issues we have with multimonitor setups. I'll
concentrate on the original issue for now. ;)

okay (looks like I was more attentive to the Unix boxes on that patch)

Could you add that path in the next release?

I'll put out a short patch fixing this, and incorporating the XkbBell

Oh, and I don't quite understand why UTMP_NAME is set to utmp22 instead
of plain "utmp".

:-(

A scripting error. Will fix.

It's probably the case (it sounds like I knew what I'm writing about),
because after a crash (on a text vt) I can see the same backtrace as
previously (at least the function from the frame #9 doesn't appear).

I'm a bit lost. Assuming you use gdb, do you see two different traces?
If so, maybe depending on the cases, some objects differ a bit,
meaning crashes at a different level (in the caller or in the callee).

I've just cherry-picked a patch from upstream to fix an issue in the
callee. If that fixes your bug, I'd then be interested in knowing
whether my patch against the caller can be reverted without triggering
some crashes again (in other words: is it useful at all).

I'll mail you back in a moment with a link to the i386 binaries,
that's probably going to be easier for you?

KiBi.

Bug#572268: xserver-xorg-core: Crash, Segmentation fault, VidModeSetGamma+0x67, xf86ChangeGamma+0x4b

2010-03-03 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi!

Marcin Szewczyk (03/03/2010):
> It's probably the case (it sounds like I knew what I'm writing
> about), because after a crash (on a text vt) I can see the same
> backtrace as previously (at least the function from the frame #9
> doesn't appear).

I'm a bit lost here. Trying to get things properly, can we talk about
only gdb traces, so as to make sure we don't mix everything together?

So my question: Can you now obtain two different gdb backtraces now?

The patch I've just cherry-picked should help (that's for the extra
function that gets called in the “new” trace) getting rid of the crash
entirely.

It could be that:
 - My first patch does something, but that's not sufficient.
 - My first patch serves no purposes at all.

In order to test that, I've included both patches for now, and
hopefully you might get a working system. If that's the case, I'll
probably provide you with an extra set of packages with only the
cherry-picked patch. Depending on the outcome, we should learn whether
my first patch was useful at all. (So that I can forward it to either
xorg-devel@ or /dev/null.)

I've prepared binary packages for i386 including both my first patch,
and the cherry-picked one. You can fetch them from:
  http://people.debian.org/~kibi/packages/xorg-572268/

(Those packages will probably go away once I'm done with this bug.)

Installing both xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-core-dbg should be
sufficient.

KiBi.

You probably want to report that upstream, but read on.

> You've mentioned some blog, but i did not found it in your letter,
> or a link to it.

Failure from my side, as usual. Kernel versions are talked about in
those blog posts:
  http://ikibiki.org/blog/2010/02/28/Where_have_you_been/
  http://www.itp.tuwien.ac.at/~mattems/blog/2010/03/03#newer_linux_32_33

You might want to wait until another revision of the .32 or .33
kernels is available, then check whether the issue is still here.

If you were to open a bug in Debian, please put the kernel function
name or file path in the subject, that's AFAICT another story.

KiBi.

Because on linux, that should be handled by xserver-xorg-input-evdev.

Can you make sure your keymap/layout/variant, etc. are what you expect
them to be. Once that done, if the issue persists, getting xev output
would be nice. We'll reassign to the appropriate package once that
done.

Sorry for that ambiguity.

I got 2 gdb backtraces - both the same, both with the additional
function xf86RandR12ChangeGamma.

I got 2 X traces (associated with the gdb ones - same crashes) - both
the same, both without the function.

Every gdb against X backtrace differs by that function.

No.

OK, could You provide me with the source version of the second patch? I
learn new things here and I'm curious. Everything should happen faster
now, as I know the procedure and I don't have to do a clean rebuild.

Bug#572405: crashes X when compiz is started

2010-03-03 Thread Dave Witbrodt
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd
Version: 1.3.0-0+git6387ab4c-091112+vidabi7
Severity: normal

I am not a Debian Maintainer or a Debian Developer, but I _am_ a Debian
user who has been experimenting with 2D/3D acceleration and kernel mode
setting with Radeon HD 4850 since November.

Please be aware that radeonhd seems to be dead or dying, and many
distributions are proactively steering their users away from radeonhd.
The radeon driver (Debian package: xserver-xorg-radeon; upstream source:
xf86-video-radeon) is being developed at a very high rate, and it
supports mostly feature-complete 2D/3D acceleration on "r600" (Radeon HD
4XXX) hardware. Also, radeon supports kernel mode setting (KMS) where
radeonhd does not; all Linux distributions are rapidly moving toward
KMS, which is a Very Good Thing.

The graphics corruption you are describing on HD 4850 when using HD 4850
is known:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25309

The radeonhd lacked the hardware to test and troubleshoot, and lacked
the developer worker-hours even if they had the hardware, back when I
reported this bug.

The "unidentified card" log spam is harmless.

Neither radeon nor radeonhd currently can access more video RAM than is
mapped by the PCI bar. Support for "unmapped VRAM" is in the works, and
may appear in kernel 2.6.34; failing that, I expect it to arrive by
2.6.35... unless unforeseen problems delay it longer.

Compiz should work well on radeon. My advice is for you to get a kernel
with KMS support enabled, a new enough libdrm with support for radeon
DRM enabled, and mesa and radeon built against that new-enough
libdrm-dev package. These are all available in Debian experimental and
unstable thanks to recent efforts by the Debian X Strike Force,
especially Brice Goglin. You should be much happier with this
combination of packages than you are right now!

You probably want to use the radeon driver these days. 6.12.191 is in
experimental now with a lot of code for modern boards like yours.

Well, I guess they actually will be "fixed" by disabling UMS, as intel
and nouveau already did in January.
