Bug#492459: Toshiba M70-144 with ATI Radeon X700 display

2008-07-26 Thread Adrian J

Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: (1:6.6.3-2)

I recently made a standard Debian 4 installation on a Toshiba Satellite M70-144
laptop. This model has an ATI Radeon X700 display.

The ATI driver which is rolled in as part of the standard installation fails to
light the panel in this model of laptop. I have tried three times to get the
open source ATI driver
working, without success.

I have re-configured the system to use the fglxr-driver and, using information
gleaned from the Ubuntu help pages, have managed to get the panel working in a
very
satisfactory manner.

My guess is that this problem is likely to be specific to the laptop hardware I
am using. I don't think maintainers should spend time on this, but I do think
maintainers should
know the problem exists.

Should you want more details, mail me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Regards

Adrian Jenvey

Severity: serious
Version: 2:2.3.1-1

Hi,

the debian/copyright of xserver-xorg-video-intel is so outdated it has
little to do with the rest of the package when it comes to who owns
which copyrights.
It would be good to go over the source and extract the relevant
copyright notices. Note that per-file annotations are not required, so
that copyright notices of files with the same license can easily be
agglomerated.

Kind regards

T.

Bug#492491: Just pressing and holding "a" in konsole recently makes X eat all cpu

2008-07-26 Thread Sami Liedes
Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-4
Severity: normal

[I don't know if this is a konsole or X (or qt) bug, but konsole is
where it happens so reporting a bug against konsole, Cc: to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Feel free to reassign as you see fit.]

Starting with either kernel 2.6.26 or (which I suspect more) a recent
X update in unstable, just pressing and holding a letter makes X eat
lots (>80 %) of cpu (one core of a modern intel core 2 quad) as the
letters get printed. Also when normally typing, there is a noticeable,
but not tremendous, latency before getting the letters on screen. This
didn't happen before.

I don't use any transparency, either at the X level or the konsole
fake transparency. Schema is white on black, font is Monospace bold
12, antialiased. The same does not happen in gnome-terminal with the
same (and still antialiased) font.

Video card is Radeon HD 2600 with xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 1.2.1-2
and xserver-xorg-core 2:1.4.2-2, with no direct rendering (I guess DR
is not even supported by the driver yet?). As I mentioned, this used
to work fine for a long time at least until a couple of weeks ago.
Some days ago I rebooted to kernel 2.6.26 and probably also an updated
X server and experienced this bug.

To me a particularly interesting fact is that making the konsole
window larger makes X eat more cpu (despite only the same small
portion of the konsole being updated); with a nearly full-screen
konsole (something like 1600x1120) X takes 80% of cpu; with a 800x600
size (and the same font and everything) the load is 50%.

I did some profiling, all the CPU time gets spent in
xserver-xorg-core's libshadow.so, function shadowUpdatePacked:

$ opreport --symbols
warning: [vdso] (tgid:5197 range:0x7fff917ff000-0x7fff9180) could not be
found.

If you think it might help, I'm willing to spend some time to debug
this further. For example if you think it would be of any use, I could
get a more detailed source level annotation of shadowUpdatePacked, I
just need to recompile xserver-xorg-core for that.

This is probably due to a change in default xrandr mode selection
policy in the two xserver versions you are using.

Since you are using a clone mode, fluxbox is getting it's geometry
from the 1600x1200 screen.

Please send me your video bios and the pci subsystem ids for your
video card, and I'll fix this issue.

subsystem ids:
lspci -nv

video bios (as root), use lspci to get the pci slot id:

(and the xorg.conf manpage says AllowEmptyInput takes effect "if there
are no input devices in the config file")

The attached patch should fix this. Daniel, can you take a look? I'm
not sure why we have both checkInput() and checkCoreInputDevices(), by
the way.

xorg-server unblock request

2008-07-26 Thread Julien Cristau
Hi,

I'd like to request an unblock hint for xorg-server:
unblock xorg-server/2:1.4.2-2

This version fixes some parallel build issues in the packaging, and
cherry-picks 3 bug fixes from upstream.

There'll be at least one further upload before release, we have some
pending debconf translation updates for xprint.

Cheers,
Julien

Hi,

could you try to find out where the hang occurs? You can put some calls
to ErrorF() at various points in the driver, and add Option "Log" "sync"
in the ServerFlags section of xorg.conf.
If we don't manage to track this down soon, I'd be tempted to revert to
an earlier version of the savage driver for lenny.

Cheers,
Julien

at VT switch time).

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.0-2

Environment: MB P5E-VM HDMI with embedded Intel G35 video, Q9300, 4GB
RAM, HDMI-to-DVI converter (came with the motherboard), Philips 200CW
20.1" LCD (optimal resolution 1680x1050), Debian testing (Lenny), uname
-a : "Linux zen 2.6.24-1-686 #1 SMP Sat Apr 19 00:37:55 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux".

Problem: When monitor is connected using digital DVI cable (via supplied
HDMI-to-DVI adapter) resolution is 1680x1052 (according to monitor's
OSD; attached: xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log.gz). Image quality suffers,
starting X only (`X', not `startx') gives A LOT of moire. With a regular
analog cable resolution is correct. With TMDS Modelines seems to have no
effect whatsoever, if DDC is disabled HorizSync and VertRefresh seems to
be ignored and resolution is capped at 1280x768 (attached:
Xorg-noddc.0.log.gz). Under Vista display works correctly, so it is
probably not a hardware problem. More information can be supplied upon
request.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.2-2
Severity: normal

This laptop uses intel GM965

The brightness settings I have chosen via the hotkey are overridden
every few minutes to be maximum brightness.

I can force this to happen by setting the backlight to minimum, and then
opening the System -> Preferences -> Power Management. As soon as this
control panel opens, the screen brightens to maximum value.

It also just magically brightens for no apparent reason after a few
minutes.

This laptop
supports 8 brightness levels, from 0 to 7.
Writing to /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness works.

If I
rmmod video

then the problem stops (the backlight section under /sys/class also
disappears). My hot keys work, without the cute pop-up icon, and the
brightness levels are not changed.

It is a new laptop so I don't know if this is a recent regression. It
does happen with the 2.6.24 kernel in Lenny, though.
