Bug#442963: xserver-xorg-input-kbd: order matters when pressing Ctrl + Alt

Fixed mine (443471) but reverted back to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.4-3 as
with 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1 resolution is broken here (HorizSync and
VertRefresh values are ignored from xorg.conf, i'll double check and
eventually file a new one ^_^).

Strangely enough, it's now working with 2:1.4-3 too. Should i close it
myself (443471) or should i leave it to the maintainers?

Thanks a lot for you help.

Bug#451917: xserver-xorg-video-intel: upgrade from 2:2.1.1-4 to 2:2.2.0-1 breaks X for g33 chipset

2007-11-19 Thread Alan W. Irwin
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Severity: normal

X -probeonly

completely locks up the keyboard with the monitor immediately put into its
low-power state (as close to turned off as possible without quite being
turned off) so the only recourse is to log in remotely and shutdown or to
reset to regain control of the keyboard. Everything worked fine
for previous version (2:2.1.1-4) although there was initially a lot
of trouble with modelines and VGA-1 until I found the right combination
in xorg.conf to get 2:2.1.1-4 to work.

Note, I have tried some other variations such as VGA rather than VGA-1, but
that didn't help the complete lockup with X -probeonly. In the log below
you will see

First SDVO output reported failure to sync

I previously (with 2:2.1.1-4) never saw that error message.

Any advice you could give me to work around the present hard lock
and restore X to normalcy would be much appreciated. For example,
is there any way for me to get back to 2:2.1.1-4?

Hi,

if i keep pressed the right or left Super key modifier and then press the right
Alt key (trying a chord), xev doesn't report the Alt keypress event. With Super
still pressed, if i release the Alt key, i have both events, KeyPress and
KeyRelease of the Alt key, reported simultaneously, with the same exact
time-stamp.

This doesn't happen with the left Alt key, or using the same keyboard with a
laptop running Etch, so at least i would exclude a keyboard glitch.

I've tried with a bare X session, only a WM running (Sawfish and Metacity), and
older versions of xserver-xorg-input-kbd, xserver-xorg-core, and xkb-data
without results, so i'm not sure it's a regression of the
xserver-xorg-input-kbd package.

I've looked at #442963 (order matters when pressing Ctrl + Alt) and seems
suspiciously related, but i can't replicate that bug.

Since I upgraded to this version from the one corresponding to X.org 7.2, I
noted that pressing Ctrl-Alt- in this order was not working as before, it
only took the Ctrl into account. Reversing the order however and pressing
Alt-Ctrl- works as expected. Xkbwatch confirms that the server is not
recognizing (or receiving?) the event for the alt key while ctrl is pressed.
Other modifier keys work instead.

If the xkb option ctrl(swapcaps) is set to make CapsLock an additional
Ctrl, CapsLock-Alt_L combination does not generate KeyPress event for
Alt_L when pressing Alt_L key. Instead it is generated when *releasing*
the Alt_L key. There is no problem when pressing CapsLock-Alt_R or
Ctrl_L-Alt_L.

Here is my xkb settings:

  athlon:~% setxkbmap -v
Trying to build keymap using the following components:
  keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwerty)
  types: complete
  compat: complete
  symbols:pc+us+ctrl(swapcaps)
  geometry: pc(pc104)

To reproduce the problem, first do 'setxkbmap -v -option ctrl(swapcaps)'.
Then press CapsLock, and press Alt_L. No event is generated when
pressing Alt_L. If you release Alt_L, then both KeyPress and KeyRelease
events for Alt_L are generated at the *same* time. See the following
xev output:

KeyPress event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0x3c1,
root 0x1a6, subw 0x0, time 198571408, (367,-23), root:(371,0),

The 2:2.1.1-4 package is available from:
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/09/17/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel/

Could you also try 2:2.1.99-1 to see if it was broken too?
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/11/14/debian/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-intel/

It looks like your computer uses VGA-1 instead of VGA, it's the second
time I see this. I should talk to the upstream guys about it.

Anyway, could you try changing your modeline into something else?
For instance [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead?
(use gtf to get the corresponding modeline).

Bug#451941: xserver-xorg-core: Ignores DisplaySize in xorg.conf

2007-11-19 Thread Robert Grimm
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1
Severity: minor

After the last upgrade of xserver-xorg-core I noticed that DisplaySize
is ignored and I ended up with a 75x75 DPI, and thus unusable Display.

As a workaround I inserted
Option "DPI" "109 x 109"
in the device section, but it would be better if X uses DisplaySize to
calculate the real resolution. The same way it worked till yesterday.

Bug#451950: xserver-xorg-core: doesn't "see" any mode larger than 800x600

2007-11-19 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1
Severity: important

hi,

restarting X earlier left me with a nasty surprise. after checking the
log, it was telling me no modes of that name (1024x768) even though the
version previous it was working fine. seems it "forgot" that others
modes exist beyond 800x600. anything else it saw fine.

people with the problem: leave it on hold, or downgrade it to 2:1.4-3
until it gets fixed.

thanks
simon

That's very surprising since DisplaySize didn't work earlier and is
supposed to be fixed now. Can you try with the nv driver instead of
nvidia? It could explain this strange behavior.

(**) NV(0): Display dimensions: (350, 260) mm
(**) NV(0): DPI set to (116, 117)

while

DisplaySize 370 278

is set in xorg.conf

The above is from EDID, and is the same as I get with nvidia if I do not
set
Option "UseEdidDpi""false"

I can't find a similiar option for nv.

It's been fixed (the resolution) in some 6.7.192 or so.
The lockup is present in 6.7.196 but the mode handling there is
apparently different again, the default mode on a non-detected CRT is
some widescreen resolution.

I would assume the LCD problem fixed. They might have broken it again
but there's no point in testing every dev release, especially since
the driver is unusable unless the card is set to PCI mode (which is
not something a user will likely find out).

There is a different bug for the crash

Yes, it works in PCI mode. 6.7.196 is still broken.

Unless somebody specifically tries to fix this or there are changes
that are likely to fix this I guess there is not much point in trying
more builds.

Thanks

Bug#451972: no longer supports xinerama across multiple graphics cards

2007-11-19 Thread martin f krafft
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.6.193-3
Severity: serious

sid's xserver-xorg-video-ati (and also in experimental) no longer
supports MergedFB. Thus, it is no longer possible to address the two
ports without RandR.

Since RandR is incompatible with Xinerama, and RandR 1.2 does not
yet support multiple cards (RandR supposedly will), the new ATI
driver thus breaks all Xinerama setups which use more than one
graphics card.

I know RandR is the way to go, but I am still filing this bug for
posterity. I also made it RC because I don't think that this version
should become part of stable. Instead, RandR 1.3 should enter stable
so that multihead continues to work as before, without serious
regressions.

Bug#451983: Device and Monitor identifiers in Screen section of xorg.conf ignored

2007-11-19 Thread Fredrik Olofsson
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.3+6
Severity: normal

After upgrading xorg 1:7.3+3 -> 1:7.3+6 the Device and Montior
identifiers in the Screen section are ignored and replaced with default
values. This works ok for my first screen, since the default is to use
the first device section in the file, but my second screen needs to use
a different device. This configuration worked before this upgrade.

Please see the attached xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log. Particularly that
both screens are assigned to "nvidia0" and "".

Thanks,
/Fredrik

I'm not sure this is an xserver-xorg issue. It seems to have something
to do with icewm. When I bring up a menu with Ctrl-Esc it locks up. If I
bring it up with the mouse by clicking on the link at the bottom of the
screen it doesn't happen. However, it has started doing this since the
recent upgrade.

Actually, it's not clear at all that it is a software bug. It could
well be your AGP bridge just not being totally spec-compliant and thus
freezing the machine under high load. PCI mode requires a little bit
less than AGP, and the hardware can support it more easily.

Does it help if you add
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
in the above section? EXA is enabled by default in 2.2.0.
But there is at least one known problem with fonts and EXA.

Actually, this is a problem in the X server, not in the driver.
Intel already has the same "feature" in testing for 6 months,
but Xserver 1.4 seems to expose it more than Xserver 1.3 for
some reason.

As soon as you have one board with a RandR 1.2 driver, you can't
use any other board, even if its driver is different and does not
support RandR 1.2. It just crashes the server.
I am merging with the exiting relevant bugs (which are also RC).

Now, when is RandR 1.3 going to happen? I did not see many changes
regarding this so far. And apart from several nice and well supported
RandR 1.2 drivers, there are a bunch of other ones that will be probably
remain broken for multi-head until somebody port them to RandR 1.x.
All this kind of sucks...

Bug#451917: xserver-xorg-video-intel: upgrade from 2:2.1.1-4 to 2:2.2.0-1 breaks X for g33 chipset

2007-11-19 Thread Alan W. Irwin
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #451917

Brice said:

> Anyway, could you try changing your modeline into something else?
For instance [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead?
(use gtf to get the corresponding modeline).

Hi Brice:

I was also concerned that perhaps my mixed debian testing/unstable system
was causing a problem with just updating xserver-xorg-core and
xserver-xorg-video-intel (although that simple procedure worked for
xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.1.1-4) so I removed those packages (and
everything dependent on them such as xorg), then reinstalled the unstable
xorg using

apt-get -t unstable xorg

For that newly installed unstable xorg, "X -probeonly" completely locks up
both for [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] The results for the latter
are given
below.

This is a production system so my top priority is to get X working again,
Thus, the next thing I am going to try is removing xorg from unstable and
reinstalling the testing version. I only moved to the unstable xorg version
in desperation when I could not get modelines to work at all before (see
Bug#448983, where the VGA-1 peculiarity for my g33 system was first
mentioned.) However, I think I am on top of that modeline problem, and so I
may get a working X out of xorg testing. If that doesn't work, then
I will attempt to go back to xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.1.1-4).

Can you look in /var/log/aptitude or /var/log/dpkg.log to find out what
has been upgraded recently?

Also, if X really locks up, ctrl-alt-fX to switch VT should not work,
ctrl-alt-backspace to exit X should not either, the Xorg process could
be using 100% CPU (login by ssh to check this), and Xorg.0.log might
contain some errors about event being rejected.
Do you observe any of these symptoms?

Thanks. Do note that I have two cards both using the same driver
though, and the crash happens while moving from one screen to
another, both on the *same* card.

Sorry for the delay in replying, and not following up originally. I did
attempt to install it (after your initial reply), but found it brought
in other things which broke. After that I reverted to 6.6.3.

I will try again today with the 6.7 package and report back.

Bug#452040: xserver-xorg: xserver don't find device specified for screen

2007-11-19 Thread BARBIER Jean-Matthieu
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+6
Severity: important

The device specified in the Screen section is not recognized : xserver
always takes the device of the first Device section in xorg.conf

the related section of xorg.conf :

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVidia"
Driver "nv"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
(...)
EndSection

Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:2:7:0"
(...)
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "MainScreen"
Device "HISRadeon1"
(...)
EndSection

Problem : the HISRadeon1 is never used : log says that
xorg.conf have no device specified... this makes all multi-card
setups fail (xrandr or xinerama..)

see the relevant part of Xorg.0.log here :

(==) ServerLayout "dualATI"
(**) |-->Screen "MainScreen" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor ""
(==) No device specified for screen "MainScreen".
Using the first device section listed.
(**) |   |--> Device "NVidia"

The problem seems to be solved upstream...

1:6.7.196-1 works for me.

I used to have a setup where my two monitors showed different displays
(:0.0 and :0.1), with an instance of my window manager running on each,
so that I could control which workspace is displayed on each separately.
Now, I have what mergedfb used to be like, where there is one display
that spans both monitors. I read that the new X code cannot handle the
separate displays that I used to use, is that correct?

Thanks,

Cameron

Bug#452041: xserver-xorg: Seems not to read "Screen" section

2007-11-19 Thread Shai Berger
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+6
Severity: important

Hi,

As you may see in the attached log file, when X
starts, it claims the DefaultScreen section did
not specify a device or monitor. As a result, it
picks, instead of my "BenQ Monitor", some default
configuration that only supports 640x480 (if you ask
the proprietary nvidia driver) or some weird
1280x768 (if you ask nv), neither of which is the
correct 1280x1024.

While it does pick the correct video card, this seems
to be a fluke -- it is not from the screen section,
but rather by default.

This configuration file used to work until the
last upgrade.

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20071117-1
Severity: important

hi,

restarting X earlier left me with a nasty surprise. after checking the
log, it was telling me no modes of that name (1024x768) even though the
version previous it was working fine. seems it "forgot" that others
modes exist beyond 800x600. anything else it saw fine.

people with the problem: leave it on hold, or downgrade it to 2:1.4-3
until it gets fixed.

thanks
simon

When reading EDID from a connected monitors fails xorg no more uses the
manually provide HorizSync and VertRefresh which means that xorg will fall back
to the hardcoded 800x600 and not permit any higher resolution even if the
graphics card supports it and the user have added HorizSync and VertRefresh

Thanks,
/Fredrik

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+6
Severity: important

The device specified in the Screen section is not recognized : xserver
always takes the device of the first Device section in xorg.conf

the related section of xorg.conf :

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVidia"
Driver "nv"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
(...)
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "HISRadeon1"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:2:7:0"
(...)
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "MainScreen"
Device "HISRadeon1"
(...)
EndSection

Problem : the HISRadeon1 is never used : log says that
xorg.conf have no device specified... this makes all multi-card
setups fail (xrandr or xinerama..)

see the relevant part of Xorg.0.log here :

(==) ServerLayout "dualATI"
(**) |-->Screen "MainScreen" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor ""
(==) No device specified for screen "MainScreen".
Using the first device section listed.
(**) |   |--> Device "NVidia"

The problem seems to be solved upstream...

Bug#179286: please justify wontfix

2007-11-19 Thread Rich Felker
If this bug is going to be marked wontfix, I think a justification is
in order. Enabling "eightBitInput" (which Henning has correctly noted
is a misnomer) by default clashes with non-7bit characters, making it
unreasonable for any application using a terminal to attempt to treat
octets with the 8th bit set as meta keys. Not only does the default
value of this setting cause problems for users who need non-7bit
characters; a multitude of applications (most notably IRC clients but
also others) fail to interpret bit 8 as meta, causing an endless
stream of new user hassles and support questions. These applications
are behaving correctly in supporting an internationalized/multilingual
environment; "fixing" them to accept bit 8 as meta would be a major
step backwards.

Another related bug is the default setting of utf8Title to false,
which causes xterm to disregard the locale's text encoding and treat
window title strings arbitrarily as Latin-1. Like "eightBitInput",
this resource is also misnamed. It should be named "Leave my title
string alone!" as the man page explains that setting it to true merely
causes xterm to skip the munging.

With UTF-8 as the default text encoding starting with Etch, xterm's
active hostility towards non-ASCII-only locales really needs to be
treated as the bug it is, and fixed. I would prefer to see it fixed
upstream as well, but at the very least Debian should fix it, by
adding the following the the app-defaults file:

XTerm*eightBitInput: false
XTerm*utf8Title: true

The man page should also be patched accordingly.
