Hi;

Thanks for investigating. I have the same symptoms with 2:2.1.0-2,
but then the chvt hack does not work (neither does restarting the X
server), and it is convinced my external monitor is a TV with a max
refresh of 30Hz. The latter may be an unrelated xrandr issue.

Bug#439322: xserver-xorg-video-ati: xrandr does not detect VGA monitor

The "monitor-S-video" option didn't work. I just got

Bug#438850: xserver-xorg-video-nv: Unable to use native DFP resolution

2007-08-29 Thread Michael Hanke
Hi,

I looked into an old backup of my xorg.conf and found the reason why it
was working on etch. I was using the proprietary nvidia driver and had the
following line added manually to the device section:

Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck, NoEdidMaxPClkCheck"

Using this line and the 'nvidia' driver the screen works properly on a
fresh etch installation and a fresh install of lenny on the same
machine. It also works with the free ati driver (when connected to an
ATI card) on etch and lenny.

On both releases the free 'nv' driver fails to set the correct
resolution and shows the behavior reported in previously.

Cheers,

Michael

I suspect the driver is not able to get an edid for the monitor. If
it doesn't get one, it'll just end up getting the default modes. you
can use xrandr to manually add a mode:

xrandr --addmode VGA-0 1280x1024

regarding the edid, two factors could be at work. Either we are using
the wrong ddc line or we need to adjust the i2c timing a bit.

Bug#440063: abi changed in 2.15.21 but soname wasn't increased

2007-08-29 Thread Robert Millan
Package: libmetacity0
Version: 1:2.14.5-4
Severity: important

According to this entry in compiz changelog:

  * compiz-gtk needs to conflict with libmetacity0 (<< 1:2.15.21) because of
an incompatible ABI change. This should really be fixed in libmetacity. A
shlibs bump should do the trick. (Closes: 425631)

libmetacity0 changed its abi in 2.15.21 without increasing the soname. Please,
could you bump the soname now?

Although it's a bit late, this is necessary in order to backport compiz to
etch. It would allow compiz to drop this hack and thus be usable with older
versions of libmetacity0.

try adding 1280x1024 to the modes line in the screen section of your

server.

That edid is from your LVDS panel, not the vga monitor.

Bug#440095: compiz: does not work

2007-08-29 Thread Xavier Bestel
Package: compiz
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: important

Hi,

when running compiz --replace (with metacity already managing the
windows), I get that:

GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is available with indirect rendering.

then all decorations disappear, and that's all. I can't move the windows
(even when trying with ALT+drag), nothing works (ALT-tab,
ALT-CTRL-arrows, etc.). Exactely as if I had no window manager, except
compiz.real and gtk-window-decorator are running.

In fact, compiz.real is half-working because if I STOP it, the windows
stop updating (so the screen is effectively composited), but that's all.

+2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
+
+This file is free documentation; the Free Software Foundation gives
+unlimited permission to copy, distribute and modify it.
+
+Basic Installation
+==
+
+Briefly, the shell commands `./configure; make; make install' should
+configure, build, and install this package. The following
+more-detailed instructions are generic; see the `README' file for
+instructions specific to this package.
+
+ The `configure' shell script attempts to guess correct values for
+various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses
+those values to create a `Makefile' in each directory of the package.
+It may also create one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent
+definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that
+you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, and a
+file `config.log' containing compiler output (useful mainly for
+debugging `configure').
+
+ It can also use an optional file (typically called `config.cache'
+and enabled with `--cache-file=config.cache' or simply `-C') that saves
+the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring. Caching is
+disabled by default to prevent problems with accidental use of stale
+cache files.
+
+ If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try
+to figure out how `configure' could check whether to do them, and mail
+diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README' so they can
+be considered for the next release. If you are using the cache, and at
+some point `config.cache' contains results you don't want to keep, you
+may remove or edit it.
+
+ The file `configure.ac' (or `configure.in') is used to create
+`configure' by a program called `autoconf'. You need `configure.ac' if
+you want to change it or regenerate `configure' using a newer version
+of `autoconf'.
+
+The simplest way to compile this package is:
+
+ 1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type
+ `./configure' to configure the package for your system.
+
+ Running `configure' might take a while. While running, it prints
+ some messages telling which features it is checking for.
+
+ 2. Type `make' to compile the package.
+
+ 3. Optionally, type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with
+ the package.
+
+ 4. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
+ documentation.
+
+ 5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
+ source code directory by typing `make clean'. To also remove the
+ files that `configure' created (so you can compile the package for
+ a different kind of computer), type `make distclean'. There is
+ also a `make maintainer-clean' target, but that is intended mainly
+ for the package's developers. If you use it, you may have to get
+ all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came
+ with the distribution.
+
+Compilers and Options
+=
+
+Some systems require unusual options for compilation or linking that the
+`configure' script does not know about. Run `./configure --help' for
+details on some of the pertinent environment variables.
+
+ You can give `configure' initial values for configuration parameters
+by setting variables in the command line or in the environment. Here
+is an example:
+
+ ./configure CC=c99 CFLAGS=-g LIBS=-lposix
+
+ *Note Defining Variables::, for more details.
+
+Compiling For Multiple Architectures
+
+
+You can compile the package for more than one kind of computer at the
+same time, by placing the object files for each architecture in their
+own directory. To do this, you can use GNU `make'. `cd' to the
+directory where you want the object files and executables to go and run
+the `configure' script. `configure' automatically checks for the
+source code in the directory that `configure' is in and in `..'.
+
+ With a non-GNU `make', it is safer to compile the package for one
+architecture at a time in the source code directory. After you have
+installed the package for one architecture, use `make distclean' before
+reconfiguring for

Hello,

in section 'Session Program', 3rd paragraph, the xdm manpage states:

At most installations, Xsession should look in $HOME for a file
.xsession, which contains commands that each user would like to use
as a ses‐ sion. Xsession should also implement a system default
session if no user-specified session exists. See the section
  Typical Usage.

However, the section 'Typical Usage' isn't present in the manpage.
The attached patch removes the last sentence.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.4-3
Severity: minor

The xdm maintainer scripts all contain superfluous calls of
laptop-detect in the following snippet:

,
| LAPTOP=""
| if [ -n "$(which laptop-detect)" ]; then
| if laptop-detect >/dev/null; then
| LAPTOP=true
| fi
| fi
`

The LAPTOP variable is not used anywhere, but the laptop-detect call
can lead to confusing error messages, I just reported that in bug #438093.

I just talked to upstream developers about this, they think it is very
hard to fix. It is a firmware bug and that would require lots of work in
the nv driver (and it's not going to happen). I am tagging this bug as
"wontfix" unfortunately then.

They also said that if you're using a DVI cable, you should try a VGA
one instead. The way the card drives the monitor is very different. The
"too small panel size" problem that prevents 1680x1050 from being
accepted on DVI should not occur with VGA.

Maybe the server doesn't like having a Monitor-S-video option without
the same for other outputs, it thinks only this monitor should be used
but fails because of the "ignore" option.

You should try adding similar monitor-VGA-0 and monitor-LVDS options and
new Monitor sections for VGA-0 and LVDS (only an identifier is required,
and of course you don't want an ignore option there).

Could you try building the latest upstream git snapshot in case it got
fixed in the meantime? There's a how-to at

If it does not help, I will forward this bug upstream.

Yes, it does.

That would be nice. I really thought that thing didn't work for months,
and only because I actually took time to (at least) report a bug I did
check for a workaround in the debian bugs database.
It's of course my fault, but I suspect I'm not alone in that case.

Thanks,

Count me in... and multiple other people that reported similar issues...

I am retitling the bug instead of closing it, so that your wish doesn't
get lost. I am actually pinging seanius about this every 2 days. So I
guess he'll fix this when he'll be bored by my pings :)
