Bug#439764: xorg-server: Please package Xfbdev

2007-08-27 Thread Mikko Rasa
Package: xorg-server
Severity: wishlist

The Kdrive-based Xfbdev server is useful on embedded systems like the
Sharp Zaurus. Since it is built anyway, I see no reason not to include
it in the distribution.

Hello,

my Radeon X800GTO,PCIe card does not work with kernel 2.6.17 anymore.
With 2.6.16 there was no such problem. Now the driver gets up and in the
moment where it usualy changes the resolution the monitor goes off and
the console seems to be dead. Keyboard does not react, not even magic
sys-rq does work. I can login from remote but I cannot kill X any more.
It hangs and eats 99% CPU power (displayed by top).

Unfortunately the VESA driver shows similar symptoms (it has failed
already with 2.6.16), however I have not straced it yet. I believe that
VESA has been working with Xorg 6.8 or 6.9 and kernel versions from
those days.

Do you have any suggestions? Should I forward the issue to LKML?

Relevant strace log parts attached.

Eduard.

Closing this bug since Eduard does not have the hardware anymore, Robert
never confirmed whether the bug still occured or not, and Patrick's bug
was probably unrelated anyway. If anybody ever reproduce this bug, I
would rather have him open a new bug report, since this one is already
messed up with possibly different problems.

You need to give us a *lot* more information if you want anything to
happen with this report. For a start, run
'/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-core/script 3>&1' and send the output to
the bug address.

Please try again with latest xserver-xorg-video-ati in experimental

xorg.conf since xinerama is now replaced by randr-1.2 (see
http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/9846.html for some help).

I'm using compiz with a r300 card (thinkpad t42p). It works rather well
in general, but I've noticed that after coming back from a
suspend-to-ram, the screen is 'flickery'. Changing desktops, for
example, makes the screen flicker with black bands on the bottom of the
screen.

Doing compiz --replace solves the problem, not surprisingly.

Anyways, thanks for the good work! It's nice to have compiz in Debian.

Cheers,
Carlos

ATI Mach64 PCI card with 2MB RAM (OEM version) does not run
X-4 on my system, while X-3 was running smoothly on it. (My other
box with Voodoo3000 runs X-4 no problem.)

If DefaultDepth 16 is used, it can not start X at all.
Concered entry in log is following:
(WW) Registering the following despite conflicts with estimated resources:
[0] 0 0x01ce - 0xf3fe IS[S]

If DefaultDepth 1 is used, it can start x but scrambled color is
overlayed. This looks like some other process is overwriting color
table of color table is reading from wrong address.

Configuration file for DefaultDepth 16 is attached.
Configuration file for DefaultDepth 1 is same except for this entry.
(Many modules are disabled for simplicity.)

Logs for each attached.

/proc/pci is also attached as reference proc_pci. As you can see
this system is loaded with PCI devices. (2 NICs, Sound, Video, ...)

-
Side notes:

I use debian default 2.2.18 kernel as is, so no FB support for
ATI is compiled-in. Also VGA, and VESA FB is absent while Matrox
seems to have module in kernel. (I do not know why??? strange.)

When I compiled ATI/VGA/VESA into kernel, kernel started with
scrambled graphic penguin boot logo. Looks like this is a
similar problem to X-4. I could telnet into this system to shutdown.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.0.1-1
Severity: normal

When I just answered the questions asked by `dexter', it set up a config
file for my Mach64 that specified a default depth of 24 bits. The
xserver wouldn't start, giving an error like:

(EE) ATI(0): Driver can't support depth 24

Changing the `DefaultDepth' (in the `Screen' section) to 32 gave this error:

(EE) ATI(0): Driver does not support depth 32.

Trying a depth of 16, gave this one:

(EE) ATI(0): Depth 16 is not supported through this adapter.

And finally, a depth of 8 worked. Unfortunately a color depth of 8 is
pretty awful with a lot of modern software.

There seems to be no mention of a color-depth limitation in either
README.ati.gz or Status.gz (in /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86).

I've attached copies of the error logs at the end of this message, and
my XF86Config-4 file as well.

-Miles

Changing the VT from X to console and back to X locks up the computer
completely, unless I'm using the console framebuffer device. With
console fbdev, just the screen freezes and I can still ssh to it or type
blindly.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-6
Severity: wishlist

Hello

On my Radeon 9200 board, I've noticed that the VGA signal quality is
better on the VGA output than on the DVI output (probably due to a bad
quality DVI to VGA converter): I have a lot of analog ringing which
are too visible on my computer screen (1280x1200).

I also have connected a video projector on the DVI head. At 800x600,
the ringing is less visible.

When I set up a dual head configuration, display :0.0 is set to DVI
head (e.g. videp projector) and the display :0.1 is set to the
computer screen (which is correct behavior according to the radeon man
page).

Unfortunately, this means that the kdm login prompt appears on the
projector screen. This is litterally a pain in the neck since the
login prompt is projected behind me ;-)

So, my wish, is to be able to swap the primary/secondary head in the
XFConfig file. (An option like SwapPrimarySecondary would be fine)

Note: MergedFB resolves the kdm login problem, but using xinerama in
a configuration where you have a computer screen and a video projector
(which is not always turned on) is really painful.

For instance, with Windowmaker, all icons on the right are placed on
the video projector. And menus can unfold from one screen to the other
one projected at my back.

Thanks

Bug#439788: xserver-xorg-video-via: fails to detect monitor

2007-08-27 Thread michal . suchanek
Package: xserver-xorg-video-via
Version: 1:0.2.2-2+b1
Severity: normal

The driver fails to detect the Eizo FlexScan L465 LCD panel connected to
the VGA connector. This screen is normally (when connected to different
graphics adapters) easily detected.

The resolution set by the driver is unusable with this screen, the
bottom part of the desktop is offscreen and won't scroll.

That's probably a bug.

This is the RandR extension version supported by the server, not the
xrandr program version. I don't see how to get the program version from
the command line, apart from looking in
/usr/share/doc/xbase-clients/changelog.gz (or
./x11-xserver-utils/changelog.gz).

> But perhaps my xrandr version is too old. WIll 1.2.2 it be available in the

>
It's already available in experimental in x11-xserver-utils (packages
are at ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/x/x11-xserver-utils) and
will be in unstable soon. Being in experimental does not mean "very
risky" here, it only means that the packaging changed a lot
(xbase-clients is split into multiple pieces) and had to be done
somewhere for testing before entering unstable.

Since you don't get any error when using --addmode, I guess you're
already running xrandr >= 1.2.1. Version 1.2.2 does not bring many
improvements.

Yes, that did help! The monitor went on after giving the xrandr --mode
command. It now also detects the other modes:

Hello,

when I play movies through xv, either in kaffeine or mplayer, they are
compressed
to the left half of the viewport, either fullscreen or window.
Interesting thing is,
that restarting X sometimes solves the problem.

Do you know when this problem started to occur ? After upgrading
xserver-xorg-core to 1.3 ? Does the problem go away if you downgrade to
1.1 in Etch ? Or if you downgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati to 6.6.3 (in
testing) or upgrade to 6.6.193 (in experimental) ?

I don't really know, but IIRC, it was after upgrading -core to 1.3. I'm not
sure about downgrading to 1.1, but -video-ati 6.6.193 did not solve the
problem.

You only have two crtcs and you are trying to enable more than two
outputs. turn off tv if you want to enable VGA.

xrandr --output S-video --off

Yes, that helps, but why is it enabling S-video in the first place? I don't
have anything connected there.

Your computer shares the tvdac between the vga port and the tv, since
they share a dac, load detection for either can result in false
positives for the other. I think I'll probably just disable load
detection for tv for all radeons where it is not dedicated as several
people have run into this.

Hi Brice,

I'll check into this as soon as I can (I'll shoot for some time this week,
tonight UTC-0400 if I'm really lucky).

What's the current state of autobuilding experimental? Only i386 packages
are up right now. If not, I still know how to build from source, of
course, but I don't run anything newer than lenny, so some warning would be
appreciated as to whether I'll need to set up a chroot for some
bleeding-edge build-deps.

Once again, you have my appreciation for the big rubber mallet and pruning
shears you've been wielding so ferociously against the X bug list.

There is an experimental autobuilder for powerpc, but it usually lags a
bit.

I have everything built for powerpc in a pbuilder chroot. Just let me
know which packages you need and I can put them up on people.debian.org.

What's envy, and which version of the ati driver are you installing? If
it's the version in experimental, remove xserver-xorg-input-all for now,
the wacom driver hasn't been rebuilt for the new xserver version (yet?).

Bug#439850: G33: segfaults on GLX usage.

2007-08-27 Thread Björn Heide
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.1-1
Severity: important

Hello,

The X-Server segfaults whenever I try to run any GLX programm (glxinfo,
glxgears, some rss-glx screensaver). It makes no difference if I use EXA
or XAA for 2D acceleration.

I replaced /var/log/Xorg.0.log with /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, so you can
the crash.

Kind regards
Björn

Bug#438546: using Xinerama: second screen does not show window's content and first screen if poorly redrawn

2007-08-27 Thread Nadav Kavalerchik
i'd love to try it but synaptic insists on upgrading the xorg-core to
experimental too
and it asks me to remove allot of xorg packages because of that. which i
think i need ?

is it a dependency issue for the new ati experimental driver
or i should really move to experimental xorg-core too ?

kindly,
Nadav :-)

The video and input driver ABIs changed in xserver-xorg-core 1.3.99 (the
one in experimental), so all driver packages in experimental are built
for this new ABI and cannot work with 1.3 (in unstable).

But no driver actually depends on this new xserver-xorg-core. So you can
try rebuilding xserver-xorg-video-ati from experimental against
unstable. IIRC, you should just have to change the build dependency from
1.3.99.0 to 1.3.0 in debian/control.

Or you can try building to upstream driver manually with
http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html.

Let me know if you need help, I could possibly build the package (for
i386 and/or amd64) and put it online at http://people.debian.org.

Brice

If the bug appeared when upgrading to xserver-xorg-core 1.3, you might
want to test the 1.4 prerelease currently sitting in experimental
(2:1.3.99.0-2) together with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.192-2.

Bug#439850: G33: segfaults on GLX usage.

Support for G33 is missing in Mesa 7.0.1. It has been backported for the
upcoming 7.0.2.

In meantime, either don't use GL applications, or disable DRI in
xorg.conf, or uninstall libgl1-mesa-dri (which is useless for you right
now anyway), or rebuild Mesa using the patches in #437333.
