Bug#420506: DRI fails

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

Could you try the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.0.0-5 currently
in experimental) and report back whether it works better? Your DRI
problems apparently got solved by removing the VideoRAM line. The blue
XV problem should be fixed by now. So what remains is the freeze when a
game changes the resolution, and the drmWaitVBlank warning. The latest
package has a good chance of fixing these too.

Thanks,
Brice

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

Could you try the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel package (2:2.0.0-5
currently in experimental) and report back whether it fixes your
problem? Be sure you do not disable DDC as before since the driver needs
it to autodetect modes.

Thanks,

Bug#418256: screen stays black after resume, workaround is to switch to console and back

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Erich,

Do you still reproduce this problem with a black screen after
suspend/resume with the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver? If so,
it would be good if all of you could try with the latest
xserver-xorg-video-intel driver (2:2.0.0-5 currently in experimental).

If you still experience a black screen at resume, you should try either
passing acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the kernel, or use vbetool post after
resume (some high-level suspending program can take care of this for
you, for instance with the uswsusp package).

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

I am contacting all of you again since everybody does not agree whether
this bug is fixed or not. It could be related to which chipset you have.

It would be good if all of you could try with the latest

It is supposed to resume well.

If you still experience a black screen at resume, you should try either
passing acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the kernel, or use vbetool post after
resume (some high-level suspending program can take care of this for
you, for instance with the uswsusp package).

Note that xrandr is meant to switch displays on/off so it might be
"expected" that hotkeys do not work anymore :) I don't know about
i810switch, I would rather not use it since it might have been designed
for old i810 driver and I don't know how it interacts with xrandr.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=404885. The guy is
using the vesa driver. You might want to test with the vesa driver
instead of i810 and see whether the same problem occurs (but you won't
have accelerated 3D with vesa). If it still occurs, we'll have to
reassign this bug to the server core instead of the i810 driver.

About the i810 driver, it has been largely reworked since version 1.7.
It is now superseded with the Intel driver 2.0
(xserver-xorg-video-intel). Its first release had multiple problems on
your i855, but most of them are now fixed in the latest git snapshot of
the driver. So, if you want to test it, you have to install
xserver-xorg-core 1.3 (currently in testing) and
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.0.0-5 currently in experimental. All this
will require to upgrade several packages such as the libc6.

Also, since your attached file suggests that you might have been trying
multiple heads in the past, you have to know that mode detection has
been greatly improved in the new Xserver 1.3 and intel driver 2.0. Most
of the stuff in xorg.conf to manage resolutions, modes and multiple
heads is useless nowadays. You might want to look at section #6 and #7
of http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/ReleaseNotes to change your
xorg.conf accordingly. Let me know if you need more help.

Hi Gunnar,

Could you try the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel package (2:2.0.0-5
currently in experimental) and report back whether it fixes your slow
rendering under rotation?

The problem looks similar to the URL above. Feel free to add comments
there if you think it may help.

Which xserver-xorg-video-intel do you have? The bug might well be caused
by the driver instead of compiz. It might be good to try the latest
xserver-xorg-video-intel currently in experimental (2:2.0.0-5).

Do you still get a usable display if you start X with
startx /usr/bin/xterm
as reported earlier? If so, what does xrandr says? The problem with a
VGA display wrongly being detected should be fixed by now. So you should
see only LVDS there. Try xrandr multiple times since this problem was
intermittent. So "xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto" should
be useless now.

Bug#420350: Still doesnt work

2007-06-23 Thread Mateusz Kaduk
Hi,

Ok what I did was.
Removed i810, changed in xorg.conf from i810 to intel.
Then
apt-get -t experimental install xserver-xorg-video-intel
which was 2.0.0-5
Did restart gdm.

I got some errors. I also tried
X -configure
and
X -config /root/Xorg.conf.new
however I got the same errors as before.

Here is the output.

Hi Brice,

unfortunatelly the experimental driver doesn´t work, too. I can´t get the
virtual screen size. I append xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log.

No, that works fine by now. I'm not sure which upgrade fixed it, since
hibernate, uswsusp and the intel driver were all upgraded. I didn't need
enable the new workaround in hibernate though (switch to text mode after
resume that is). Thanks for the good work!

Do you mean it does not start? Or "just" that your old virtual screen
feature does not work? What resolution do you get at startup? Are you
able to move/resize the display correctly with xrandr?

As explained earlier, the current "Virtual" line does not seem to have
the exact meaning that you want. This Virtual line seems to be only
meant to resize/place multiple heads in a same big screen with xrandr
--pos/--above/--right-of/... From what I understood, you were moving
inside your 'virtual' screen by hitting the corners with the mouse,
right? I don't know how to do that today. But I also don't really see
why you need this :)

Hi,
I'm using ususpend to ram (s2ram) a lot, using the hibernate package.
Suspending usually works fine, however the screen always comes back as
just black. A workaround I've discovered is to switch to text mode (Ctrl
+Alt+F1) and back to the video console (Ctrl+Alt+F7). I've also had the
impression (didn't test it thoroughly yet, though) that when I do this
too fast, the xserver locks up (i.e. switch back to the video console
before the text console screen is reinitialized).
I'd also like to point out that the text console screen is just as
black, I didn't try to get the login prompt displayed yet, either.

hibernate has some options such as switching to text mode before doing
the suspend, but enabling them didn't help. I remember the
non-modesetting driver to have worked better here, hibernate called
915resolution after resume and then switched to the video console and
that worked just fine.

can you install the driver from experimental, restart X, and send us the

Yep, latest sid.

xdpyinfo still reports:

using this setting in my Screen section:

Xorg.0.log acknowdlges I have asked for external CRT but then goes on to
talk about the laptop's panel, which it should not be caring about:

(II) R128(0): PLL parameters: rf=2700 rd=12 min=12000 max=27000; xclk=10500

and then Xorg.0.log goes on to claim it knows nothing about the IBM

(II) R128(0): Not using mode "IBM_mode_2" (no mode of this name)
(II) R128(0): Not using mode "IBM_mode_3" (no mode of this name)

Then I end up with cruddy 1024x768:
(**) R128(0): *Mode "[EMAIL PROTECTED]": 65.0 MHz (scaled from 83.9 MHz), 60.1
kHz, 74.4 Hz
(which I find odd, because if it truly was using the flat panel's
settings, should it not have picked up the 60Hz rate the flat panel
requires? It works on both displays when I cycle through the
laptop's external/interal settings)

The latter certainly will be a problem -- I have good reason for wanting
to supply my own modelines -- I have a fixed frequency external monitor.
I don't need better discovery -- this all used to work, and I've already
worked out which modelines will work on my monitor, and X will not do a
better job than me at detecting necessary modelines from a monitor that
doesn't do DDC. This used to work prior to 6.9 -- I haven't changed
anything to do with my carefully crafted modelines, so those should
continue to be working.

Thanks for testing this, and also for adding a comment to the upstream
bug report!

For the record, the line that you modified has been with this comment
"XXX Guess, need to check this" for more than 7 years now. And the
commit that introduced it doesn't give any hint about where the old
12MHz value comes from...

I understood the patch to provide extra functionality which potentially
makes font packaging simpler, without breaking the existing usage. If
I was right about that then the upload ought to be safe, with the new
functionality waiting in the wings for whenever we're ready to call on
it (I understand xserver 1.4 will be able to use it).

Also, before doing so, it would be good to add

Option "ModeDebug" "Yes"

to the Device section of xorg.conf so that we get debugging output in
Xorg.0.log and the upstream developer can use it to locate the problem.

Could you try with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.192-1 currently in
experimental in case it helps?

Or you feel more adventurous, you could try the randr-1.2 branch of the
upstream git repository since it should be better at discovering
modes/resolutions/... automatically without the need for anything in
xorg.conf. I have some packages of this somewhere if you want to try it.

Bug#420712: xserver-xorg-video-intel does not show virtual screens

The driver starts correctly and I get a resolution of 1024x768, which is o.k
for me. It is also the maximum resolution my monitor can handle.
Unfortunatelly I am not used to xrandr and how to handle it. I never used it
before.

The history of my favor for a virtual screen is, that I had a small 17''
CRT-monitor. With my first LINUX ditribution about ten years ago, a SuSE, I
came along to get used to a virtual screen size bigger than my monitor could
show, as described in the xorg.conf manpage:
Display Subsection - Virtual xdim ydim.
This feature existed until xserver-xorg-video-i810_1.7.2-4.i386.deb.

Meanwhile it is not any more important for me to have this virtual screen
feature of the hardware driver, because I was forced by the bug to use a
fixed 1024x768 resolution and now use the virtual screens provided by my
windowmanager, what is a good solution for me.

So we could finish this bugreport quoting the xorg.conf manpage: "Some
drivers/hardware combinations do not support virtual screens. Refer to the
appropriate driver-specific documentation for details".

Thank you for your efforts and help, Brice.

Bug#428148: gxine crashes at startup with xserver-xorg-video-intel

2007-06-23 Thread Jos van Wolput

Hi,

Brice Goglin wrote:

Hi,

Could you try the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel package (2:2.0.0-5
currently in experimental) and report back whether it fixes this crash
of gxine?

From what I read, the problem only occurs when you use XAA with

Composite? EXA has been designed towards compositing, so you'd rather
not use XAA with Composite anyway. Also note that
"XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" does not matter if you use EXA instead of XAA.

Brice

I tried v. 2.0.0-5 but the gxine crash is not yet fixed, when using XAA with Composite
and option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" it still
crashes with error 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. It works when
"XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" is removed or Composite is disabled.

I also tried EXA instead of XAA but it does not work. My fonts, icons and
pictures look as if the DPI is to low (not enough pixels).
Occasionally (when X is restarted) they look good, but usually they look bad.
This problem with EXA occurs with all the versions 2:2.0.0

Thanks for jumping into this report. I'll consider applying your patch

Sorry the wrong one. It is xdriinfo which does not build.

And I also find the reason. The symlink /usr/lib/libGL.so is needed but
not on my system.

I've tried all versions of the i810 and the new intel drivers from
testing, unstable and experimental, always with the same result.

Perhaps an interesting thing is that after resume from suspend, the
graphic session isn't restored on the F7 tty but on F8.

This command (/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1) give me exactly
the same results than the xorg.0.log i already send to you :(

For information, on an up to date SID the 2/06/2007, resume from suspend
was ok. I don't know exactly which packages have changed since this
date, nor exactly when the problem have appeared.

I hope this help

Do you mean:
1) a X session in F7 will be moved to F8 after suspend
or
2) a Xsession on F7 won't be restored at all, while a Xsession on F8
will be fine (still on F8)
?

If I remember correctly, nothing big changed in X packages in unstable
recently. At least not the Xserver, Intel driver, Mesa or compiz. Other
things involved in suspend are the kernel and possibly some
suspend/resume script. Did you change your kernel recently? How do you
suspend to ram?

/var/log/aptitude or /var/log/dpkg.log might give you some hints about
what have been upgraded recently.

There are a couple bugs upstream talking about these warnings. Using
driconf to change vblank_mode ('Synchronization with vertical refresh
(swap intervals)') to 0 ('Never synchronize with vertical refresh,
ignore application's choice') might make them disappear (until a proper
fix is found).

Bug#320828: xserver-xorg: Sometimes crashes in ATI driver when resizing XV window

2007-06-23 Thread Marcel Moreaux
Hi, I'm the one who filed this bug.

Sorry for the late reply; my laptop (the machine I encountered this
problem on) is a bit defunct, so I spent some time resurrecting it, and
installing Etch on it.

On Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 08:45:52PM +0200, Brice Goglin wrote:

I installed Debian Etch on it, and I was able to reproduce the crash
just like two years ago.

I also tried out Sergey's patch, but it still crashed on me. I did some
more experimenting; MPlayer allows resizing the window without keeping
the correct aspect ratio (at least, in the WM I tested with), but it
will not allow resizing to smaller than either 4 pixels horizontal or 4
pixels vertical.

When I reduce the width of the MPlayer window, Xorg won't crash, even at
4 pixels wide. But when I reduce the height of the MPlayer window, Xorg
will crash (with a SIGFPE, as always) as soon as I get below 16 pixels.

So I changed Sergey's lines to:

if (DstW < 16 || DstH < 16)
return BadValue;

And then I couldn't get Xorg to crash anymore (but obviously MPlayer
would crash with a BadValue error).

I have no idea why Xorg crashes for me on XV windows less than 16 pixels
high :/

Upstream noticed this problem right after the last release of xrandr.

I am merging this bug with the same bug in
x11-xserver-utils/experimental (which will contain xrandr once the
xbase-clients split hits unstable).

/usr/lib/X11/rstart seems to be their newer location (in xutils/etch),
so the old ones are probably useless now. Some upgrade forgot to remove
them, it's been reported in Bug#382360 xutils: upgrading from sarge,
then purging, leaves /etc/X11/rstart/*

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

When I rebooted my laptop (Apple iBook G4) this morning, the second
screen remained blank. The Xorg.0.log config file shows "No valid
mode found for CRTC2, disabling MergedFB". I haven't changed my
xorg.conf since 2006-11-21, so I'm pretty sure it's related to a
recent Xorg update. I can't be sure which one since I may have
updated Xorg more than once between reboots (and rarely restart X
other than on reboot). I am however quite sure I haven't installed,
removed or reconfigured Xorg packages recently other than during
aptitude upgrades or aptitude dist-upgrades. Also, I rebooted
sometime in the last two weeks without problems, so it must be a
problem with a recent Xorg update.  [yes, I aptitude up{date,grade}
more or less weekly]

I hope someone can help me out here, since I have no idea whatsoever
how to fix this (other than attempting some Xorg downgrades, but
that's hardly "fixing"). If there's anything I can do myself (that
doesn't involve intimate knowledge of Xorg internals), please let me
know.

When i set "radeon" or "ati" as driver for my Radeon 9550SE i just get a black
screen wenn starting X. There is no error to find in the Xorg.0.log and
when i set "vesa" as driver it works.
I don't know if that matters, but when i was using XFree86 i had the same
problem with a 2.4.6 kernel but not with a 2.6.8 (using the same version of
XFree86).
Now i'm using Debian Etch and a 2.6.18 kernel.

Bug#413697: xserver-xorg-video-ati: Crash on exit and failure to restart

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Paul,

Does this crash of the X server on exit still occurs? Did you have a
chance to try with a more recent Xserver and ATI driver?
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-6 is currently in testing while
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.192 is in experimental. Since the backtrace
of your crash didn't contain anything apparently ATI specific, I'd
suggest upgrading only xserver-xorg-core first.

Thanks,
Brice

Package: xorg

I just installed etch/stable and everything went fine except when the system
started up for the first time I got the following error:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I have a Radeon X300 SE 128MB HyperMemory video card.

I eventually found and fixed the problem. I'm not sure how the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is generated,
but in the Section "Device" for the Radeon X300, the Driver is listed as "ati". I changed
that to "radeon" and all is well.

I suggest that the default driver name be "radeon" instead of "ati" for this
and any other affected video cards. This will save some other innocent user the frustration I had
to go through.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r0, kernel 2.6.18-4 etch stable.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in expediting this bug fix.

Sincerely,
Mike Saavedra

Bug#425814: xserver-xorg-video-ati: Xv broken on Mach64 3D Rage LT Pro AGP-133

2007-06-23 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Svante,

Is there anything new about XV being broken on your mach64 board? Did
you by chance look at Michel's earlier questions? (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=35;bug=425814)

It looks like we'll have to reassign this bug to the server core
(xserver-xorg-core) since downgrading it to 1.1.1 fixed the problem
while changing xserver-xorg-video-ati's version did not apparently help.

Thanks,
Brice

Bug#422230: xserver-xorg-video-ati: [ati/radeon] crash when using xinerama

Hi Arnaud,

Does this crash of the server when using xinerama still occurs? Could
you try with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.192-1 currently in experimental?

Note that if you want to play with multiple-heads and so, RandR 1.2 is
getting strong work in the ATI driver upstream. It means you will be
able to place/resize outputs dynamically soon (not in 6.6.192
unfortunately).

Hi Hendrik,

Do you still have problems getting the X server to work with the ATI
driver on your machine? I don't see anything obviously wrong in your

Also, you might want to try with the "ati" driver from package

[Sorry if you get this twice.]

Unfortunately, 1:6.6.192-1 doesn't make me happy. After I received
the "bug closed" email, I updated xserver-xorg-video-ati to
1:6.6.192-1 from experimental (and all other xorg packages installed
to the latest versions in unstable). And now I have exactly the same
problem [bug #422777] again.

Please let me know if you need more information (e.g. xorg.conf or
Xorg.0.log).

[In the mean time, I guess I'll have to pin xserver-xorg-core to
stable.]
