Hi,

this bug is fixed in the version of xorg-server in experimental, so I'm
closing it. Unfortunately it's too late to fix this in etch, only RC
bug fixes are allowed.

Thanks,

Bug#415541: libx11-6: 1.1.1-1 causes complete screen lockup / freeze from xmms

2007-03-22 Thread Arthur Marsh

Michel Dänzer wrote, On 21/03/07 22:05:

Thanks for conducting these tests. Hmm, do you run xmms as root or
normal user? It's hard to imagine how libX11 could cause the symptoms
you describe in the latter case...
I run xmms setuid root combined with the realtime-lsm kernel module to
give xmms real-time priority (still not skip-proof when playing MP3
files across the LAN but much better than as a normal process contending
with other activity).

Selecting "play directory" from xmms in a directory with a large number
of media files (e.g. 450 MIDI files) causes a *temporary* lock-up (no
keyboard response or screen updates) whilst xmms looks at the large
number of files. The real-time priority that xmms uses is unfortunately
not restricted to what is needed for audio output.

So it's possible that xmms enters an infinite loop (possibly in libX11)
which due to its realtime priority prevents everything else from
running? Can you try what happens if you run it without realtime
priority?

I upgraded libx11-6, then before restarting X, did:

 chmod u-s `which xmms`

then ran xmms, then selected "play directory" and experienced another
complete lock-up, which required the big red switch.

Arthur.

Why the first one? How are they probed, by PCI order?

Hi,

Please provide more information about what you were doing, which version
(if any) of x11-common was already installed, how you're trying to
install the package, and the complete output of "LC_ALL=C apt-get
install x11-common".

Thanks,

Bug#415878: Xserver crashes since update from 1:7.1.0-12 to 1:7.1.0-15 with the nvidia driver

2007-03-22 Thread Daniel Schröter
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-15
Severity: critical

Hello,

since I upgraded xserver-xorg from 1:7.1.0-12 to 1:7.1.0-15 the X-server
crashes on startup (from Xorg.0.log):
[...]
(II) Initializing extension GLX

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x6d) [0x4802ed]
1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x39e1e2f110]
2: /lib/libc.so.6(__ctype_tolower_loc+0x25) [0x39e1e292c5]
3: /usr/bin/X(xf86nameCompare+0xfe) [0x4a4cde]
4: /usr/bin/X(InitInput+0x103) [0x45ea23]
5: /usr/bin/X(main+0x337) [0x430e57]
6: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xda) [0x39e1e1c4ca]
7: /usr/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x9a) [0x43026a]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I reinstalled the hole "nvidia.*" packages, but the the problem still
exist under debian/unstable AMD64. Also I tried the nvidia packages from
experimental with the same result. Building the nvidia-package against
other (self compiled) kernel makes no different.

Attached you will find the complete Xorg.0.log output and the xorg.conf
file.

The normal "nv" driver works fine.

Bye

Daniel

The xserver-xorg package is basically empty. Which version of the
nvidia drivers and of xserver-xorg-core are installed (and was the crash
related to an upgrade of either of these packages, or to a change in
your config file)?

If you could rebuild the xorg-server package with debugging symbols and
reproduce the crash within gdb, that would probably help.

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.1.1-1
Severity: important

Hello X Strike Force,

Just 10 minutes ago, I did an
# apt-get update
# apt-get -t experimental install xserver-xorg-core
to try out AIGLX.

After that operation succeeded without requiering any additional package, I
try
# /etc/init.d/gdm restart
that fails, hence, drops me at tty1. From the Xorg log I quickly realized
that I also needed to upgrade to a newer version of xserver-xorg-video-ati
in addition.

This solved the problem, and now AIGLX works with an ATI rv350.

Apparently xserver-xorg-core has a dependency with xserver-xorg-video that
is a virtual package. I guess the requirement was met at the time I
installed xserver-xorg-core.

It look like the package xserver-xorg-core should get a dependency with a
recent xserver-xorg-video-all. I don't really know if it's a __bug__
actually or more a work in progress, but since it "broked" my system in some
way, I felt like reporting.

I hope this will help you.

Sylvain.

P.S. I just felt adding a little congratulation for the work done by you
guys. It is real pleasure to use Debian everyday.

And actually that would be against libx11 upstream (i.e. xlib on

Hi Adrian,

About 4 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS requesting a

this bug still matters today, I suggest you forward it upstream since
there are very very few chances it is ever directly implemented in Debian.

The "patch" you provided to support the happy hacking keyboard 4 years

directly send it to the upstream maintainer/bugzilla, there will be much
more chances that it finally gets included.

Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-6
Severity: normal

I am using an Apple USB keyboard (United Kingdom version).

With the following in xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
# Option "XkbOptions""altwin:meta_win"
EndSection

The keyboard works, including all the alphanumeric keys, but the
punctuation is wrong. This is because although the keycodes are the
same as a standard pc105 keyboard, the engraving on the keytops is
different.

With this in xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "macintosh"
Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
# Option "XkbOptions""altwin:meta_win"
EndSection

The keyboard is quite broken. None of the alphabet keys work, and half
of the punctuation keys are broken. The numeric keys do work. Since
the keyboard is a macintosh keyboard (not ADB, though), this looks like
the correct configuration.

I saw this some time ago, but it was fixed. This behaviour appeared
again today, possibly due to the recent xkb-data upload.

I'm happy to hack on the xkb-data to fix the keyboard; I just don't
know where to start. I'm happy to do any testing; my system is
a Mac Mini G4 PowerMac.

Roger

Thanks for your report. This bug is indeed related to the X server, I'm
reassigning it to the appropriate people.

Bug#391570: xkb-data: More Multimedia keys working on Cherry CyMotion Master Linux

As far as I know: no. I still apply my patch after each upgrade of
xkb-data (had to change it a bit once or twice).

The problem is that I don't have a mail or anything as reference and
unfortunately also no bookmark for the BR so it might take me some time
to find it again (also IIRC there are mutliple BR's against this open
upstream)

Bug#197153: xutils: update-fonts-alias should skip removed-but-not-purged packages

2007-03-22 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Anton,

About 4 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding
update-fonts-alias not skipping removed-non-purged packages. It looks
like the problem still exist in Etch. You provided a patch, but it was
not ready to be applied at this time. Would you be able to update it for
a recent update-fonts-alias ?

Thanks,
Brice

The following upstream bugs seem to be relevant:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3541
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7983

Do you think I should mark this bug as forwarded to one of those?

No idea, I don't have a japanese keyboard.

Thanks for finding these two, the one I responded to is a different, but
looking at the two bugreports they seem to contain everything thats
needed. So yes mark the bug as forwarded.

It would also be cool if one of the patches could be incorporated into
the debian package until upstream picks them up. Would save me and
probably others fixing the files every time xkb-data is updated.

Hi,

Alas, the maintainer of xkeyboard-config left Debian, and I was relying
on his experimental packages to test new upstream releases. I am not
able to build binary packages by myself with upstream sources: the
current package in Debian has one big monolithic patch, and I do not
know what I should keep or discard.

Subliminal message to the new maintainer: swiching to patch managment
in debian/patches would help a lot. I can try to do this if you are
 interested.

To make things even more difficult, I broke my mac keyboard three months
ago, and spend a long time with a PC keyboard in the meantime. I have
bought a happy hacking keyboard for mac recently, but unfortunately, its
keycodes are not the same as the mac keyboard, for instance the left alt
sends zenkaku/hankaku (I am very disapointed, but I still prefer it over
the enormous keyboards from Apple).

So definitely, the keyboard will be missing in Etch. However, I am quite
confident that jp106 is quite a good aproximation if you do not use the
eisu and kana keys. The support for these keys has been added in
upstream's sources, as documented in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8503. If it works, the next
step is to make applications such as anthy aware of the keys.

Have a nice day,

Bug#415942: xserver-xorg: X server crash with error signal 11 on fglrx driver

2007-03-22 Thread Denis Sirotkin
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-15
Severity: important

With 1280x1024 or 1024x768 @85 Hz modes xserver starts OK.
When I try to use 1280x960 mode by adding it to SubSection
"Display" of Section "Screen", xserver starts with next to it mode.
When I try to specify any Modeline, even given by DDC or
by "xvidtune -show" when all starts OK, xserver crashes with signal 11.
I tryed set up option NoDDC and/or comment line 'Load "ddc"' in
Section "Module", but it seems that it have no effect - driver get DDC
from monitor anyway.
And I don't see xserver-xorg-dbg package in the repository.

Free ati/radeon driver have no this problem.
