debian sparc framebuffer problem
hello all, I seem to have a problem getting my framebuffer video card working with debian 2.4.27-3-sparc64-smp on sun sparc enterprise 2. I ran "dpkg--reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and it succesfully detecting my fbdev device and I set the parameters, however clearly X won't start. Any expert opinion would be appreciated. Bug#370709: xserver-xorg-video-nv: system hang in NVSync() when scrolling programs or terminal windows
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv Version: 1:1.0.1.5-2 Severity: important Hello. My X hangs sometimes when scrolling aterm and programs listbox. I made a previouse bugreport (soon two years ago): http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=277309 Go and look at that report for full story. I did some folwups, but have more to tell now. (What I have done since then, was holding back the update, with /etc/apt/preferences: Package: xserver-xfree86 Pin: release v=6.8.2.dfsg.1-10 Pin-Priority: 1001 BUT now when the names, and dependencies have changed.. It's getting harder to hold it back. ) The bug isn't active when "NoAccel" are set. And I find that "ShadowFB" set, also fix the problem. (But these two fixes have it's own problems.. As, my tv-card doesn't work with "ShadowFB", and mouse scrolling looks terible with "NoAccel".) And.. I have done some compiling of this package, and believe the problem isn't in this package, ehe! Here is the loong story: I reversed all the changes done on the nv.o/nv.so source files, in this package, so it match the last recorded stable version (6.8.. in then xfree86, there wasn't that many changes). But the driver I produced have the same problem. So.. the bug must be traced to some of the includes headers things, of whatever dependens I can't dig that deep. Bug#319048: After some time, cannot open new clients (Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached)
On Tue, Jul 19, 2005 at 09:29:21AM -0400, Joe Drew wrote: > Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server > Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached > > It's possible that some other program is trying to open too many > connections, but I have no idea what that might be. Any help in > debugging this would be appreciated! Programs being nice enough (and I think they must have a window, but that might be hidden) show up with the xlsclients program. Whatever causes this perhaps does not, but there is a small chance that might show the culprit. (Also note that xlsclients needs a connection to the X server to see who is connected, so it wont be able to run after the situation occours, except perhaps when another connection is closed before) Another possibility is to look the physical connections. netstat -axp (best run as root) should list all connections to local servers (DISPLAY=:0 and so forth) as STREAM CONNECTED, though sadly only the side of the Xserver is named (/tmp/.X11-unix/X0), but heuristics can at least give hints and things to look at. (Like a connection without filename, with a inode number one smaller than the /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 unix is normaly a connection to the X server) Hochachtungsvoll, Bernhard R. Bug#359328: direct rendering performance drop after 6.9.0 -> 7.0 upgrade
I can also report that the package xserver-xorg-video-i810 is incompatible with DRI kernel modules and mesa packages in testing. I have i910 chipset, and I run a clean etch system. After the X upgrade 6.9.0 -> 7.0 the direct rendering was gone. In order to make it work again I had to install 2.6.16 kernel from unstable and 6.5 Mesa packages from experimental. That restored direct rendering, however it seems that performance is much worse than before the upgrade. glxgears would report around 700 fps for the 7.0 version compared to 1100 fps for 6.9.0. Also the cpu load is now about 70% when running glxgears as opposed to less than 10% before the upgrade. Please let me know if there is a more specific information about this that could be useful for fixing this problem and that I could provide. I personally don't need dri, but this and other problems reported here may suggest that more caution is needed when patching debian xorg packages. Hopefully these problems will be fixed when 7.1 version is uploaded. As somebody who is using Debian both at home and at work, I'd also like to thank all developers who made modular xorg packages available in testing. It's been tremendous amount of work. Bug#370764: xorg: The paths are all fucked up
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Thank you very much for moving everything from under /usr/X11R6 to the mess known as the /usr hierarchy. Now nothing works. After spending a lot of time to even manage to get X install after upgrade _removed_ all of X and x11-common refused to install at all (needed a kludge that looped creating symlinks from /usr/lib and /usr/include to /usr/X11R6 for it to not die in install scripts -- where's the option to "just fucking unpack it and mark installed"?), X now crashed (didn't reboot it afterwards, because I know this was coming). And now I can't boot it, because I can't install the nvidia driver. And all the other configs are fucked up too, because things are all over the place. You don't just go removing such an _established_ directory as /usr/X11R6 that all programs expect, and putting everything in a single basket. That's, indeed, the completely wrong direction to take. Application directories (/usr/pkg/package-version/ or maybe even /debian-testing/packag-version/) are the way to go, not taking this unix all in one basket mess even further. Now I hear everyone complaining "you shouldn't be running testing if you're not willing to go through all the trouble". Yeah, maybe I'll have to switch GoboLinux, for at least they're attempting at cleaning up things with app.dirs instead of the FHS idiocy (/media sucks too BTW; removable media should reside directly under root for comfortable names -- and symlinks aren't of much help there generally), although They Have Been Corrupted By The Marketdroid Conventiong Of Very Long and Cumbersome Names. Or maybe I should switch to Windows, for Linux keeps getting worse all the time, and on Windows at least there Firefox has a semi-usable file dialog, and I can could use a free browser. Wait... Opera also is not an option anymore as I have no functioning X. The error message seems to tell that XF86_Switch_VT_1 is not defined in your XKeysymDB. I do not know how this can happen. Bug#370828: installation of xfonts-base breaks xserver-xorg 6.9
Package: xfonts-base Version: 1:1.0.0-3 Severity: important The installation of this package breaks the xserver-xorg 6.9 (Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'). This happens on an apt-get update. The font packages get updated, but the server does not get updated because of missing nvidia modules. The new font packages should depend on the xserver-xorg 7.0 package to prevent them from making the xserver-xorg 6.9 package unusable. Bug#243314: marked as done (xterm: busy-wait loop in scrolling logic aggravates Linux 2.6 scheduler)

Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xterm Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: normal Please include the analagous patch that suggested and tested here (for multi-gnome-terminal) into xterm (and send upstream - why didn't reportbug ask me the upstream question this time?): http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0404.0/0467.html In kernel 2.6, the scheduler changes have uncovered a bug in xterm that make the scrolling speed hideously slow[1] because it causes xterm to output one character at a time in a busy loop instead of jump scrolling. This will affect all terminals based on xterm, which is well, all of them. Presumably upstream will include this, but they don't seem to have done so yet[2][3], so I am submitting this bug report. [1] To demonstrate, open up an xterm to maximised, `ls -trlA --color` a big directory - say the 500 files in your home directory. See how slow. Now pipe the same through `cat` or `dd`, and see how quick. You may need a slow (~500MHz) computer to appreciate the full effect of just how hideous this is (6-10 seconds on my machine). [2] At least, xterm is still as slow as normal for me, but I can't download the xterm sources myself and verify yet, because hey, 50MB [3] the poster of the patch said it was in debian unstable already - I presume he meant only for gnome-terminal, because I just upgraded to test for the existance of this patch -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i586) Kernel: Linux 2.6.4 Locale: LANG=en_AU, LC_CTYPE=en_AU Versions of packages xterm depends on: ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libexpat1 1.95.6-8 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libfontconfig1 2.2.2-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.1.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libice6 4.3.0-7 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libncurses5 5.4-2Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libsm6 4.3.0-7 X Window System Session Management ii libxaw7 4.3.0-7 X Athena widget set library ii libxext64.3.0-7 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxft2 2.1.2-5 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxmu6 4.3.0-7 X Window System miscellaneous util ii libxpm4 4.3.0-7 X pixmap library ii libxrender1 0.8.3-5 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 4.3.0-7 X Toolkit Intrinsics ii xlibs 4.3.0-7 X Window System client libraries m ii xlibs-data 4.3.0-7 X Window System client data -- debconf information: * xterm/clobber_xresource_file: true xterm/xterm_needs_devpts: --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Package: xterm Version: 210-3 This was fixed upstream in some version before 210; although I'm not sure which one, since 210-3 is in both unstable and testing (and this is not fixed in sarge), this seems the right thing to do. -- Nathanael Nerode <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Read it and weep. http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Text_of_Gore_speech_0116.html --- End Message ---

Your message dated Wed, 7 Jun 2006 00:43:05 -0400 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Information not forthcoming, closing bug has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: gdm Version: 2.2.5.3-2 Severity: normal Using the 'gdmflexiserver' command *without* the nesting option completely locks up my system. If I knew how to produce more detailed information about the lockup, I would give them, but basically, I have to do a hard reset, so all tracing information gets lost. The only thing that is somewhat less that standard about my system is the Wacom tablet (a Wacom PenPartner serially connected to the computer). Actually, as it locks up the system, this might not be a problem of gdm itself. The maintainer knows better what this command actually does, and so better redirection of the bug report is expected. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux dive 2.4.16 #1 Mon Dec 17 18:23:52 CET 2001 i686 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US Versions of packages gdm depends on: ii adduser 3.45 Add and remove users and groups ii debconf 1.0.23 Debian configuration management sy ii dpkg 1.9.18 Package maintenance system for Deb ii gdk-imlib11.9.11-3 Gdk-Imlib is an imaging library fo ii libart2 1.4.1.2-11 The Gnome canvas widget - runtime ii libaudiofile0 0.2.3-1The Audiofile Library ii libc6 2.2.4-7GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdb33.2.9-14 Berkeley v3 Database Libraries [ru ii libesd0 0.2.23-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon - Shared ii libgdk-pixbuf20.14.0-1 The GdkPixBuf library. ii libglade-gnome0 0.17-2.1 Library to load .glade files at ru ii libglade0 0.17-2.1 Library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib1.21.2.10-3 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome321.4.1.2-11 The Gnome libraries ii libgnomesupport0 1.4.1.2-11 The Gnome libraries (Support libra ii libgnomeui32 1.4.1.2-11 The Gnome libraries (User Interfac ii libgtk1.2 1.2.10-9 The GIMP Toolkit set of widgets fo ii libpam-modules0.72-34Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libpam0g 0.72-34Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libwrap0 7.6-9 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra ii libxml1 1:1.8.16-1 GNOME XML library ii scrollkeeper 0.2-6 A free electronic cataloging syste ii xlibs 4.1.0-11 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g1:1.1.3-18 compression library - runtime --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- This bug has been waiting for 'moreinfo' since 2003.
