I can also report that the package xserver-xorg-video-i810 is incompatible with DRI kernel modules and mesa packages in testing. I have i910 chipset, and I run a clean etch system. After the X upgrade 6.9.0 -> 7.0 the direct rendering was gone.
In order to make it work again I had to install 2.6.16 kernel from unstable and 6.5 Mesa packages from experimental. That restored direct rendering, however it seems that performance is much worse than before the upgrade. glxgears would report around 700 fps for the 7.0 version compared to 1100 fps for 6.9.0. Also the cpu load is now about 70% when running glxgears as opposed to less than 10% before the upgrade. Please let me know if there is a more specific information about this that could be useful for fixing this problem and that I could provide. I personally don't need dri, but this and other problems reported here may suggest that more caution is needed when patching debian xorg packages. Hopefully these problems will be fixed when 7.1 version is uploaded. As somebody who is using Debian both at home and at work, I'd also like to thank all developers who made modular xorg packages available in testing. It's been tremendous amount of work.
