Remains are still left in MANIFEST.* and xlibs-data.install. Fixing
patch attached.

Splitting out xterm is independent of the modular tree, since xterm already
builds by itself, and has no relationship to the modular tree development.

I managed to compile xterm from upstream and IUTF8 support with
the attached patch. Not sure about side effects or portability
or missing features or whatever, though.

Bug#319947: Current RADEON driver in xserver-xorg is ancient.

X.Org HEAD does not have the r300 DRI drivers, however.

True, but driver "radeon" in HEAD support r300 driver, so r300_dri.so
plus kernel DRM is all you need. For 6.8.2 you need to patch X.Org sources
before compiling.

Sorry for my phrasing, and thanks.

Hello, David. How are you working on this? Is maybe xc/ a local CVS
copy from
fd.org, not suitable to stay in SVN?

If you are using XFree86, in the XFree86 list, in you are using X.Org,
in
the X.Org lists.

Yeah, it's a snapshot release from a while ago, although I'll probably put
it in to the vendor directory when I start doing serious work on it. If you
or anyone else wants to start work on it, I can upload it tonight.

Ouch, sorry about that. For what it's worth the changes weren't too great.
Most of them were in comments for install scripts and such. If you catch
anything I missed, that'd be awesome though. I'll try and mark my name on
the TODO list for items I'm tackling to prevent this in the future, but
this was really about 10 minutes worth of work, so it probably wouldn't
have helped in this case.

Right, but we'll be forced to do this for the modular tree anyway, so I
feel like we should just press ahead towards that, and take care of it
then. When we get there, I'd like to ship your version of xterm directly,
rather than whatever X.Org may ship in the modular tree. If someone feels
like specifically maintaining xterm for Debian (Branden?) we can split this
out now, but I unfortunately don't have the time to handle it myself right
now.

X.org won't ship xterm (or any other external package, for that matter)
in the modular tree, that's one of the more important points of
modularization. IMO it would be really good if someone packaged Thomas's
xterm ASAP and we stopped building it from xorg-x11.

Well, this would be cool. If someone wants to do it, I'm game, I just don't
have time to do it myself right now. I'll add it back to the TODO list for
the unspecified future but if someone wants to tackle it for -5, I'll apply
the patches.

I feel that given that at least now there are several people working in
the
name of XSF (I consider myself one of them), I am all for splitting xterm
just now and maintain on a XSF basis, that is, I can package it and upload,
and (at least by now) maintain all the sources in the XSF SVN. And have at
least another uploader, you. :-)

Best regards,

Ender.

Since we are just barely caught up with upstream, and the 6.9/7.0 release
is imminent, I'd rather spend time getting packages for 6.9 in to shape so
that they can hit experimental as soon as possible. While backporting
drivers is tempting, I feel that our time is better spent on 6.9, and then
moving on to 7.0. That will get us all the drivers, rather than having to
backport them one at a time (and then maintain those backports in the
future), as well as whatever fixes in good time.

Bug#287876: File $HOME/.xsession-errors grows very large

2005-07-26 Thread Harri Suutari
Hi!

This problem just should be fixed. A running Debian system just
kills itself by filling the hard disk with .xsession-errors
files. Unless, of course, the administrator or all users
know how to prevent it.

I fixed it by editing my /etc/X11/Xsession:

Changed this:
exec >>"$ERRFILE" 2>&1

to be like this:
exec >"$ERRFILE" 2>&1

Now the .xsession-errors file is initialized everytime when
a user logs in.

Best regards,

I'm not going to apply this because I've recently broken the translations
yet again by cleaning up the XFree86 branding. The current version is in
the svn repo, and I'm going to send a mail to the translation list so that
everyone is aware of what's going on.

Another thing to note is that Branden has plans to rewrite the xserver-xorg
debconf scripts from scratch, which will require all new templates.
Whenever he gets moving on this, we'll let everyone know via the
translation list.

You might want to keep it around, since we'll be supporting xfree86 as long
as we support sarge. After sarge is past its support phase though, feel
free to get rid of it.

I honestly don't know the answer to this. Probably a Mac-specific forum.
Thanks for the translation!

Bug#320059: xvfb: SEGV in XCopyPlane() triggered by VSW4 test suite (part of LSB 3.0 certification suite)

2005-07-26 Thread Branden Robinson
Package: xvfb
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14
Severity: important
Tags: upstream fixed-upstream

Xvfb has a bug in it that is tickled by the VSW4 test suite. One of the
tests in that suite (/tset/CH06/cpypln/cpypln 3), now enabled as part of
the LSB 3.0 conformance checks, causes xvfb to SEGV in XCopyPlane().

Jeff Licquia tells me that the Xvfb from X.Org X11 6.8.1 fixed this
problem; it should therefore be possible to borrow a patch from
freedesktop.org CVS or the X.Org X11 6.8.2 packages to fix this.

We may want to try to push this fix into a stable-update release for sarge;
while not in itself an LSB test failure, it does make using Debian Sarge
itself as a platform for testing LSB conformance significantly more painful
than it should be. Jeff says this is actually "vital" for demonstrating
the LSB conformance of Sarge, assuming our other (relatively few)
LSB-related problems are resolved.

(This is not a problem for LSB 2.0, because that version's conformance test
suite switches this test off.)

CCing Matt Taggart so that he knows to flag this as a Sarge LSB issue.

Er, sorry, my report was a little incoherent I guess. Running vim on
no file (just 'vim') crashed the xterm for me. Opening every file I
tried (only 2-3) crashed as soon as I entered insert mode. Now, though,
it doesn't ever crash, and I haven't done any upgrading or reconfiguring
in the interim. Huh. It happened that I had rebooted between
installing xserver-xorg and noticing this problem, but maybe there were
some lingering upgrade issues...
If the problem reappears, I'll try to track it down in more detail.
It's very noticeable. :-)

None of this will really come to anything if I can't reproduce the

ok. I made a quick check, but it didn't crash for me.

The easy way to check is if the "TrueType Fonts" is checked in the
right-control-mouse menu. You could have some resource set to start
xterm in that mode, but normally it uses the bitmap fonts. (I was
checking this to see if there was some odd configuration detail that
wasn't apparent).
